Hope for All chapter 39
Angela spent the next few hours sleeping on and off. The doctors continued to check in on Angela and the babies. Baby B's heartbeat was increasing but still not where it needed to be. Her contractions stopped and her blood pressure came back down. By the evening, they admitted her and brought her up to her room, Tony never leaving her side. Finally, by dinner time, Angela convinced Tony to go get some food at the cafeteria with the kids, while Mona stayed with her.
"Alright guys let's get some dinner so we can head back up" said Tony as he grabbed them trays. They grabbed some burgers, fries and slices of pizza and took a seat at the table.
"Dad, are you going to stay with Angela tonight?" asked Samantha.
"Yeah I'm going to stay the night. If everybody is alright by tomorrow morning, I'll run home to shower and change. I have to call and cancel our last childbirth class. Thankfully we got the nursery painted this past week" said Tony.
"Tony… I changed my mind. I don't want to go away to camp. What happens if something goes wrong and the babies are born soon and I'm not here?" asked Jonathan as he tried to hold back tears.
"Hey hey… you don't leave until Monday. It's too soon to make any decisions yet. Like we talked about months ago, if something happens, you won't be able to do anything about it whether you are home or at camp. Just like we got both of you today, we'd go and get you if anything happened. Your mom and the babies are doing better. Let's not make any decisions yet okay?" asked Tony.
"I don't know Tony… but we can wait to make a decision" he said as he pushed around the food on his plate.
"C'mon dweeb eat your food! Going on a hunger strike isn't going to help either you know…" said Samantha.
"Shut up Sam!" shouted Jonathan.
"Eh oh, oh eh! Enough you two! Samantha, why don't you head back upstairs and relieve Mona so she can eat. We will be up soon…" said Tony. Samantha finished up her dinner and headed back to Angela's room.
"Listen Jonathan, I know you are scared… so am I. Remember before your dad's wedding a few years ago, you and I talked about being scared? It happens… it may not seem like it but the best thing we can do is talk about it so we can be there for each other" said Tony.
"Tony… I don't want anything to happen to Mom…" he said as the tears he was holding back came down. Tony moved his chair so that it was right next Jonathan's and pulled him into an embrace as he cried into Tony's arms.
"Me either buddy, me either… but she's doing okay! The babies are doing better too, even Baby B! Once she's discharged, your mom is going to be on bed rest for a while. She won't be able to really leave the bedroom so the babies will hopefully stay in as long as possible. I promise you if anything happens, I will send Mona right up to get you" he said.
"You promise?" asked Jonathan as he pulled back from Tony's embrace and wiped the tears from his eyes.
"Absolutely! Let's finish up eating and head back up to see them okay?" asked Tony as they both started eating again.
When Samantha got up to the room, a doctor was in with Angela. Mona could see Samantha outside the door and headed out to see her.
"Where's everyone else? They skip town for the night?" chuckled Mona.
"They are still eating. Jonathan's being a pain and not eating so Dad sent me up here to relieve you so you can eat" said Samantha with a mixed tone of irritation and actual concern in her voice.
"That kid is just like his mother… any stress and they just bottle it up until they can't any longer. I'm guessing Tony's talking to him now. How are you doing with everything?" asked Mona.
"I'm… okay…" said Samantha as she looked down at her shoes.
"That doesn't sound very convincing… you want to talk about it?" asked Mona.
"I'm worried her and the babies. I can't… I can't lose anyone else I love!" cried Samantha as she burst into tears. Knowing that this wasn't the time for her typical sarcastic, standoff-ish response, she wrapped her arms around Samantha and let her cry.
"Hey there… no one is losing anyone alright! The babies are doing better and Angela's wrist will be better in no time. We got her to the hospital right away so they could treat them all. They won't discharge her until they feel like everyone is okay" said Mona.
"I know… it's just… it's just Angela has become like a mother to me, not just a stepmother. I love her and I can't imagine my life without her…" said Samantha as she wiped away her tears.
"Maybe not right this second, but sooner rather than later, you should tell her that… I mean she knows you love her but it's always nice to hear" said Mona. Just then, Tony and Jonathan came down the hallway.
"Is everything okay?" asked Tony with some urgency in his voice.
"Yes we are all good. The doctor is in with Angela so we decided to give them some privacy" said Mona.
"Oh okay. I'll go in and you guys hang out here for a minute" he said as he walked into the room.
"Hi sweetheart! Is everything okay?" asked Tony as he pulled up a chair next to Angela's bed and grabbed a hold of her hand.
"Things are looking much better thankfully. No more contractions and Baby B's heart rate is back up to the normal range. I want to keep you here for the next few days for observation but you should be good to go home by Monday" said the doctor.
"That's wonderful news!" said Tony as he leaned over to kiss Angela. The doctor headed out as the family walked back in the room.
"Good news! The babies are doing great! Baby B's heart rate is back to normal!" shouted Tony as he placed his hand over her stomach.
"You hear that you two! Just what I said… they are alright" said Mona as she put her hands on Samantha and Jonathan's shoulders.
"Why don't you two go home and relax? Jonathan needs to start packing for camp and Samantha don't you have plans this weekend with Bonnie? You both don't need to spend any more time in this boring hospital!" said Angela as she could see both kids had been crying.
"We can help him pack right Samantha? C'mon you two I'll take you home and we can figure it out then" said Mona.
"Im so happy you are okay Angela and the babies are too. I love you so much" said Samantha as she walked over to her and gave her a hug.
"I love you too sweetheart!" said Angela as she pushed some fallen hair off of Samantha's face.
"Yeah Mom I'm glad you are okay too…" said Jonathan as he walked a few steps towards Angela but stopped short of her bed. Angela motioned for him to closer, which he did after a few moments.
"I'm okay Jonathan I promise. I'll be home hopefully before you head up to camp. If you need any help packing, Grandma and Samantha will help you until Tony gets home" said Angela.
"Okay Mom… I love you" he said as he gave her a tight hug that lasted longer than he normally would have, but was welcomed by Angela nonetheless. Soon they all headed out the door, leaving Tony and Angela alone.
"He looked so scared Tony! So did Samantha. Maybe you should go home tonight and spend time with them" said Angela.
"Eh oh, oh eh! I'm not going anywhere! They will be okay. Mona will take care of them I'm sure. I talked to Jonathan earlier. He's hesitant about going away to camp and something happening to you or the babies. I said we wouldn't make any decisions until the end of the weekend. I'm hoping by then we will know everything is okay and you will be home so he feels like it's okay to go" said Tony.
"They were both so scared today. I wish there was something more to do to make sure they were okay…" she said.
"They will be fine. You just need to focus on healing and continuing to take such good care of these kids in here! I'll stop home tomorrow and send Mona over to keep you company. I'll help him start to pack and bring them both over to visit. There's nothing else we can do right now. I don't want you worrying about it though…" he said as he placed his hand on her stomach. Just then, two detectives came into Angela's room.
"I'm sorry to bother you but my name is Detective Green and this is my partner Detective Stewart. Would it be alright if we asked you some questions about what happened today at the train station?" asked the detective.
"Sure… I'm not sure how much help I will be. It all happened so fast. I was turning around to get on the train and this guy seemed to come out of nowhere. Next thing I knew I was on the ground…" said Angela.
"Did you catch the guy? I swear I hope you catch him because if I see him…" Tony started as he was getting very angry. Angela grabbed on to his hand to calm him down.
"Yes we caught him. He was apparently in process of stealing a women's purse further down the platform and was running away when he ran into you. He's being charged with burglary and if you want to press charges, then battery and assault" said Detective Stewart.
"Yes of course we want to press charges! He broke her arm and endangered our babies! I want him locked up!" shouted Tony.
"Would I need to testify if I pressed charges? I'm going to need to be on bed rest probably until I deliver or close to it" said Angela.
"No ma'am you wouldn't need to testify. We have enough eye witnesses to what happened. We will take a formal statement from you once you are feeling up to it. We just wanted to see if you wanted to pursue the matter so we can start the booking process. We will be in touch in the next couple of days. I will leave my business card in case you have any questions" said Detective Green as he handed Tony the card.
"Thank you Detectives" said Angela as they walked out of the room. Tony put the card in his wallet and took a hold of her hand again.
"Thank goodness they caught that bastard! I swear Angela if I ever see him again…" seethed Tony.
"They caught him that's all the matters. That and that our little girl is okay…" she said as watched the heart monitors beep in fast, normal rhythms.
"You're right Angela. All the matters is that you all are all alright. Can I get you anything?" said Tony.
"They should be bringing my dinner soon but I think I'm going rest a bit more. Would you mind rubbing my back?" she asked.
"Of course sweetheart!" he said as she closed her eyes as he gently rubbed her back until she fell asleep.
The next morning, Tony awoke from a restless night's sleep. They didn't have a bed for him, so he had to sleep on the chair. They both joked it was like deja vu, thinking back to so many years ago at that rundown motel near Jonathan's camp. He wished they were there now, cuddled up in a twin bed instead of in the hospital.
"Morning sweetheart. How did you sleep?" asked Tony as he stood up and stretched.
"Better than you I suspect but not well. I can't wait to be back in our bed, curled up in your arms. Remind me how we spent five years sleeping apart? One night not in the same bed and I could barely sleep!" laughed Angela.
"A lot of cold showers Angela… a lot of cold showers!" he laughed as he leaned over and kissed her good morning.
"Let's hope it's only one maybe two more nights and then I can go home. They've been kicking up a storm for the last hour!" she said as she rubbed her stomach.
"Oh yeah? Probably trying to get my attention! That's usually what they do around this time in the morning before you wake up. We have our morning chats just babies and Daddy!" he said with a smile.
"You do? I'm surprised I don't hear you!" she chuckled.
"We're very secretive Angela! Speaking of… alright little ones! Sorry I'm late but this isn't a typical morning. How did you sleep? I know we've all been focusing on you little girl but how is our big boy doing? Oh I can't wait to meet you both in a couple of months! Trust me, you'd both much rather be September babies! The summer is too hot! Once you are here it will start to get cool and we can go for walks outside and the four of us can sit on the swing under the oak tree! It's going to be so great! Just you both wait and see!" said Tony as he placed his hands on her belly, feeling the babies move around.
"Well they certainly love their Daddy!" she said with a smile.
"Alright you two… give Mommy some rest while I go grab us some breakfast. Anything you are in the mood for? That dinner last night did not look good at all!" he chuckled.
"Well it's not your cooking to say the least! Whatever looks good will be fine! I think there's a cafe across the street that you can get something for us" said Angela.
"Okay sounds good! I'll go there now and I'll call Rose to let her know we will miss today's class. Maybe she can give us some of the information from the class" said Tony.
"Oh the class! I forgot about it! Oh I wish we could go! Well at least we got through three out of four classes. I'm sure she will be able to give us the information and even the childbirth video for us to watch" said Angela.
"I'll definitely ask her. Okay let me go so I can get back" said Tony as he kissed her goodbye.
"Alright you two… Mommy's doing much better so you two can just relax. I'm hoping your big sister and brother can relax too. We've had an exciting twenty four hours haven't we! Let's hope the next couple of days stay nice and calm okay? Mommy can't handle any more excitement! Your Daddy is something special isn't he? If we thought he was overprotected before hand, we haven't seen anything yet I have a feeling! That's okay though because I know him pretty well and he's going to take some time to stop blaming himself for thinking he could have done something to prevent it from happening… which he couldn't have. I'll work on him, Samantha and especially Jonathan so don't worry about them. I love you both so much…" she said as she closed her eyes, placing her hands on lovingly on her stomach.
