Chapter 14

Confessions

Tris' POV

"We should talk," I say, knowing there is no getting out of this.

"Your test results… Back in Erudite. They were accurate, right?" My mother says calmly, as she takes the first step towards the conversation and their gray couch. She gestures for me to take the seat beside her letting me know that she isn't the one for me to fear. So, I take a deep breath, accepting the seat beside her, knowing damn well there is no way out.

I turn my head towards my father, expecting him to follow in pursuit of taking the seat, whether on the other side of my mother or on the other side of me. Instead, he takes the seat on the smaller couch across from us. I can see how angry he is with me, as I didn't deny my mother's question.

"You know how I feel about this subject, Natalie." My father begins, as if I'm not here. "Beatrice, is too young and single… And we shouldn't even be speaking about this." My heart breaks, as his eyes look everywhere in the room but me.

"Andrew, please. We don't know the whole story," My mother says, trying to calm my father down.

"Story? Story? There shouldn't be a story to tell. There shouldn't be…" He spits out, his face redder than I have ever seen it.

"Andrew, please… Be reasonable…" My mother pleads.

"I was artificially inseminated." I blurt out, yelling over their voices. Unable to take this any longer. "By accident." I sit still as my parents finally shut up and stare at me in shock.

"Sweetheart, what do you mean? What happened?" My mother asks, confused.

"Inseminated?" My father mutters, his voice just as confused.

"Yes," I answer, taking another breath. I prepare my thoughts together to explain just how in the world I got into this situation. "I went in for a yearly routine examination…The Doctor was short staffed and busy… Getting me mixed up with someone else and…"

"He accidentally inserted the specimen into you?" My mother gasped in surprise.

"So… this was a medical accident?" My father asks, trying to come to terms with it all. "Wow."

"Who's the father? Do you know?" My mother asks, curiously. I close my eyes, trying to think of a simpler way to answer that question. Sure, I can say it's Four's, my initiation instructor. But... it's so much more than that. Especially since, whose son he is.

"Do you remember my instructor that you met?" I ask.

"On visiting day…Your instructor…" I can see the wheels in her head turning to remember that day. "Four, was it?"

"Yeah," I answered.

"Marcus Eaton's boy…Right?" She asks, surprising me of her knowledge of who exactly Four is.

"You know?" I ask.

"I recognized his eyes the moment I saw him. I respected his choice in wanting to remain hidden. But yes, I knew who he was immediately." She says with her hands in her lap. Beatrice, there are things you don't know. Things you don't remember…" She continues, "I used to watch Tobias when he was a little boy. Marcus would encourage his wife to work in different areas, because of his status at the time." She takes a deep breath before she continues, "He was such a perfect little boy. Always so helpful and loving. " I'm stunned hearing this news. Why don't I remember? "One day his mother Evelyn came to get him. She was devastated, she was so upset…She picked him up and went home and we never got to sit with Tobias again after that." She explains.

"Did you know?" I ask her and only her. Dreading the answer.

"Did I know that Marcus Eaton was mistreating Evelyn? Or his son?" She asked.

"Both."

"I had a feeling that he was mistreating his wife… But if she was being mistreated, she didn't reach out for any help. She didn't have bruises that we could see. She never spoke about anything. I only had my suspicions." She finishes. I nod, not wanting to give too much away. After all, it's not my story to tell. "So what happens now?" She asks, getting back to the matter at hand.

"I'm keeping the baby. I'm working something out with Four and his wife." I confess. I admit I hate the thought of even sharing my baby with her, but Four and Christina are a package deal.

"His wife?" My mother asks, in surprise.

"Yeah, he got married." I answer, trying to hide the disgust on my face.

"Beatrice, honey, have you thought it through? I mean you are just starting out in Dauntless. What about giving the baby to… Four to raise? He is married. The baby deserves to have both its parents at home." My father says, sincerely.

"I thought about that…But I can't just give up my baby for someone else to raise. I know it sounds selfish, but I can't just stand back and pretend it's not mine when I see it." I explained.

"Abortion." He mutters, surprising me and my mother that he would even consider such a thing.

"Andrew!" My Mother says, scolding him.

"If she was Abnegation, I wouldn't bring it up. But technically she isn't. She is Dauntless. I'm sure they are used to this sort of thing happening often." He says, trying to justify himself.

"Oh yeah, sure, they just pass out the magical pill that takes care of it like tic-tacks." I say, sarcastically. I try to mask my hurt behind his suggestion, but I can't. It's not an option.

"Well, I think it's swell. I'm going to be a grandma!" My mother says, trying to break the tension in the room. "Will you consider bringing the baby to Abnegation when you visit?" She asks, excited at the thought. "We can have a crib placed in your room. And I can knit a baby blanket for him or her."

"Natalie?" My father says, unbelievingly.

"Andrew, what happened…Happened. There is nothing we can do about it now but deal with it the best we can and support our daughter and her decision." My mother says, smiling widely.

"Yes, I guess you are right." My father says, giving in. "But Marcus Eaton…" He begins, pointing towards the ground.

"Will never know or see this baby." I say to my parents. I think we are all in agreement to keep this baby safe from Marcus at any cost.

"We're having a baby!" My mother squeals. "Oh congratulations, sweetheart."

"Umm." Maggie clears her throat coming down the stairs. "Can I come down now?" She asks, like a child that has been scolded.

My mother, father and I laugh at her facial expression. She looks as though she swallowed a piece of sour candy.

I pour the steamy water into the mug of honey tea. I slowly stir my spoon watching the clear water turn into tea. I don't bother to look up when I hear the soft footsteps of my mother. Instead, I turn towards the cabinet and grab another mug and begin to prepare another cup of tea for her.

"Couldn't sleep?" She asks, taking her mug and carefully blowing the liquid before taking a small sip.

"I guess I have gotten used to the sound of rain underground versus the sound of rain on a concrete building." I explained.

"I don't think anyone can adjust after living underground." My mother agrees.

"I couldn't agree more." Maggie says as she takes the last step down the stairs and joins us in the kitchen. My mother and I both smile as we welcome her with another mug of tea. We all move to sit at the dining table, sitting back in our chairs. We enjoy the sound of rain hitting the concrete roof.

"Dad?" I ask. My mother's eyes gesture towards the stairs, not needing any other explanation as we can hear my father's snores breaking the silence. Laughter erupts through us. There's nothing like a rainy night in Abnegation and good company.
