Chapter 17

Gender Reveal

Tris' POV

I turn side to side, my eyes glued to the reflection of my stomach in the mirror. My right hand covers the small protruding bump where my flat stomach used to be. I can't help but smile as I feel the fluttering in my stomach. I wonder for a moment if somehow, he or she knows that today we will celebrate their gender.

Smoothing the fabric over my stomach, I love to see how much more the baby has grown. I push down the dress one last time, making sure my long black dress with pink and blue flowers is just right. I rub my stomach just a little more, before finally turning away from the mirror. I check the time, before heading for the party bag and the front door. I breathe easy as I have plenty of time to set up for lunch.

Four and I agreed that although we wanted to celebrate the baby, we also wanted to keep it nice and small. So, we agreed we would host the party in the cafeteria during lunch hour. It will be held at our normal table; we will decorate with just a few blue and pink items. Nothing too over the top. After everyone has had their lunch, Delila will bring out the cake for us and reveal if I am carrying a boy or a girl.

Okay, so I did have to tell one person other than Four about today… Of course I had to tell Maggie. I needed to make sure she knew to come to the cafeteria for lunch today, because sometimes she just goes home.

I pace myself as I walk to the cafeteria with the bag in one hand and a goofy smile on my face that I just can't help but keep off. I try to steady my pace. My heart is beating nervously, wanting to get there as soon as possible. I try, really try not to hope for one gender over the other… I would be happy no matter what he or she is. As long as she is happy and healthy. Shit, I really mean it.

I enter the still very quiet cafeteria. The sounds of pots and pans and knives being worked on is the only sound I hear. The room is practically empty, only a handful of people… Only when I turn towards our table I am stopped in my tracks. My mouth is gaped open, and I'm taken by surprise by the scene before me. WTF!

There is not one, not two tables decorated to the max of boy or girl things, but three tables. Large half blue and half pink paper pacifiers are dangling from the ceiling. The wall behind the first table has a massive sign that reads "Welcome to our baby gender reveal!" It too has the same half blue and half pink pacifier right under the white words. What the….?

"Tris!" I hear Christina squealing from the side of the table. She is fixing one of the centerpieces. I'm even more in shock when I notice the dress she is wearing. My dress. My exact black long flowy dress with the pink and blue flowers. I'm beyond words. Why? How? Four and I agreed that he could bring her if need be, but that she like everyone else wouldn't know until they walked in. I don't know what exactly has been going on with him and her. It's not my business. However, I do know whatever it is…It was weird that I found myself agreeing on her behalf. After all, she is his wife and will be part of this baby's life. The facial expressions he gave during that agreement. It left me to believe that something obviously has to be going on.

"What the fuck!" Maggie says loud enough for even the cooks to hear her in the kitchen. She walks into the cafeteria further, her eyes taking in the same things as I am. I can see her eyes betraying her rage as they land on Christina. I glance at Christina who is busying herself with the final touches on the tables, not even taking notice of Maggie's presence.

"That little…" Maggie mutters, taking a step in Christina's direction. I step in front of her, blocking her way. As much as I agree with Maggie, I know fighting won't help the situation. Christina is married to Tobias; they are a package deal. It's something I'm going to have to learn to deal with if I want my child to have his or her father in their lives.

"I know. Calm down," I say, taking a deep breath myself.

"But she…This is your…. What the fuck is wrong with her?" Maggie stutters. I can see she is on the verge of losing her shit, just like I am.

"Just wait till Four gets here." I demand, not sure if I am speaking more to her or myself. Because it is better that he handles his wife, after all, and not my hand meeting her face. Although that would feel really good right about now.

Maggie and I stick together like glue as Zeke, Uriah, Marlene and Shauna trail in. I watch as the same expression is painted on every face that comes in, looking at the scene before them. First glancing at me, then at her… I almost want to run back home and change out of this dress that I once loved.

Uriah is the first one to come over, I can see how split he is given his relationship to not only me but to Christina and Four. Zeke on the other hand is obviously not a fan of Christina as he looks redder than me.

"What the hell is going on here? Four said to be here at noon. He said nothing about a freak show." Zeke says, before even a hello. "And what's with the matching outfits… Did I miss the memo." He points out. It takes everything in me not to burst into tears.

"Attention everyone!" Christina begins, holding up a paper cup as she begins addressing everyone. My eyes keep glancing at the double doors, wishing for Four to finally get here. "I just want to say, thank you all for coming and helping us celebrate our unconventional son or daughter. And of course, thank you so much to Tris… The woman that decided to continue on with this pregnancy even though she didn't want it. I will love and cherish this baby with all my heart." She holds up the cup as if to toast to her own words, while the others are shocked and frozen in their seats. She takes a sip, then quickly places her cup down, as she waves at someone to come closer to her. I turn to see Delila with her hands full with a large cake… It's nothing like the one that we spoke about.

The cake looks to be a ¼ sheet size that is frosted with white frosting with a blue and a pink rattle… Nothing like what I wanted. It was supposed to be a small round cake in the shape of a cupcake with half blue frosting and half pink. How did she do it?

"Now…. Let's see what this baby is, finally!" She says, excitedly as she picks up the cake knife and slices into the cake in the middle. Delila, just like the rest of us, looks stunned at her cutting the cake and not me, the mother of this child. My heart breaks as Christina continues on, turning the knife onto its side to lift a slice up and into the air to show everyone what color the cake is inside.

PINK! It's a girl!

"What the hell is going on here?" Four's voice is heard over the chaos in the cafeteria. A part of me is relieved that he is finally here and looking twice as upset as I am over this whole damn thing.

A/N

Some drama for your week. I wonder what Four will do when he finds out how Christina truly is.
