Chapter 19

What just happened?

Tris' Pov

"What the hell is going on here?" Tobias roars from the doorway of the cafeteria. I feel the instant relief and hope when I see how furious he truly is. Our eyes meet just for a second, I look away feeling both anger and violated by what his crazy wife is doing. I hope he puts an end to this madness once and for all. Honestly, I don't know how much more of this I can take. I'm thankful to see my feelings reflected on his face as his jaw is clenched together and his face became harder than I have seen it since I hit the net on choosing day.

"Four Honey, look." Christina beams. She reminds me of a toddler excited to show off what they just did to a parent. I watch as Tobias closes the space between him and his witch of a wife while ignoring all the stares around the cafeteria and silent whispers. He doesn't stop his approach until he is in her face, reminding me once again of our choosing day when she joked about his name. He wasn't very appreciative of her then just like he doesn't seem to be now.

"What the fuck do you think you are doing?" Tobias asks, sounding more like the trainer I once knew and respected. For some reason it comforts me. I watch as Christina swallows past the lump in her throat, shocked by Tobias' tone.

"Honey, I'm doing the gender reveal for our baby." She points out, again her reaction, reminding me of a small toddler getting caught doing something wrong.

"Our baby? Our?" Tobias' voice raises slightly. I stand back watching him as he has no intention of lightening up his anger towards her. "Don't you mean Tris' and my baby?" His words comfort me, knowing that he doesnt side anywhere near Christina and her delusions.

"It's our baby. Our unconventional baby." She says, her voice lowers, confused by his reaction. She takes a step back, not comfortable with how close and angry her husband is.

"Christina, you have nothing to do with this. This baby will never have anything to do with you." He points out, as he pulls an envelope of paperwork from his back pocket. He hands it to her, as his words continue to pour out of him. "Infact, here…" He says as she takes it. Her eyes nearly pop out of her head when she sees the words on the envelope.

"What the hell is this?" She screams out, waving the envelope in the air back at him. I don't know what is exactly happening, but whatever it is, it's making her furious.

"What do you think it is?" Four continues, his right hand gesturing to the envelope. It's at this moment that I know before either one of them says anything. Obviously things have been worse between them than what they have been leading on. "They're fucking separation papers. I want a divorce. We're done." He answers, my heart drops… He never told me. I knew something was up, but nothing this serious. "My lawyer wanted to get a court server to serve the papers…But I wanted to be the one to do it." He explains.

"A divorce?" She asks, unable to believe his words. "You son of a bitch!" She screams. "After everything I did for you…"

"That Bitch." I hear Maggie say, she takes a determined step forward wanting to have a piece of Christina herself. But I held her back by her arm. She needs to let this play out, whatever it is.

"After everything you did for me?" Tobias interrupts her. "It's the only reason why I stayed with you for so long." He admits, he glances around the cafeteria seeing the crowd that has formed to watch the show.

"Why does she always get what she wants?" Chris yells, finally reaching her breaking point. "She murdered Will, now she is taking my daughter and husband." Christina points towards my direction, obviously blaming me for everything bad that has happened in her life. "Is there anything else you want to take from me? How about my clothes? Or my friends?" Christina gestures to the friends that she invited. I ignore the chaos around us, obviously her friends will side with her, even though she is wrong.

"Enough!" Tobias yells out. "Enough, Christina. This is over. I suggest you leave now before I make you." He threatens. I see the humiliation in Christina's face as she turns to stare at the crowd and then at me and then at Maggie.

She finally breaks into a scream at the top of her lungs, the crowd is disgusted when she reaches up to rip down the poster that was hung by her. She tears it in half, before turning back around and pushing the oversized cake off the table and onto the floor. She continues to yell at the top of her lungs. She finally stops when she is two steps away from me, I ready myself to defend not only myself but my baby. "I said Enough!" Tobias says, his voice stern and fierce, but no longer yelling.

"You will pay for this, Tris." Christina says coldly. Something tells me she will make good on her promise. I can count on that. She turns with all the fight out of her as she walks out of the cafeteria.

"Crazy Bitch." Maggie blurts out.

"That's all folks. The show is over, go home." Tobias says to the crowd. He turns back at the mess Christina so thoughtfully left behind. Running his hand through his hair, he shakes his head.

I battle with myself wanting to talk to him, to calm him down. But the other part of me wants to be irrational and argue with him. He didn't tell me what was going on. He was lying to me. He left me and the baby unprotected. I swallowed her crap, thinking I had to. Thinking it was right for all of us.

Tobias takes a deep breath, finally turning towards Maggie and I. I can see the need to talk all over his face. He stops just inches away from us, glancing down at my ever growing stomach, he presses his lips together and shakes his head.

"I should … Get back to work." Maggie says, taking the cue to leave.

"Thank you for coming," I say, grateful that she was with me.

"Yes, thank you so much for making the time for Tris today." Tobias says, nodding her way.

"Of course," Maggie says, giving us her warm smile. She glances at me, before stepping away and leaving us be.

Tobias and I stand there for a few moments, staring at each other.

"I should have told you about her… About what was happening." He finally says, staring blankly at my swollen stomach.

"Yeah , you should have," I say, instead of exactly what I want to. But now is not the time.

"No more secrets." He says, nodding his head. I nod my head, liking the idea of no more secrets between us.

"I'll walk you home." He says, placing his hand on my lower back, guiding me out the doors.

"Tris I'm really sorry about today." Tobias says, finally breaking the silence between us.

"Me too." I nod, agreeing that today didn't go anywhere near as planned. How did this happen? How did she know? How did she get Delila to change my order?

"A girl, huh?" Tobias says, trying to get back to what's really important, our daughter.

"Yeah." I answer, smiling wider than I ever have. In all honesty I didn't care if the baby was a boy or a girl, as long as it's happy and healthy. But now that we know, it makes this all the more real.

"I guess we should get her some pink balloons and teddy bears…" Tobias jokes.

"I definitely know now what color to paint the nursery." I mentioned.

"True."

"Are you happy?" I ask.

"Happy?" He continues, "About the baby, of course. A little girl… a mini Tris" He jokes. "Maybe she will have your smile." He says, warming my heart with his words.

"Maybe she'll have your blue eyes," I hope. Tobias chuckles under his breath at the thought. "Do you want to stay? You can stay on the couch?" I ask, not sure where he plans to go now that him and Chris are separated.

"No. I'm okay. I'll be staying at Zeke's until the morning, then I'll head to apartment housing in the morning." He explains. I nod, not wanting to push him any further.

"Tobias,'' I say, barely above a whisper. "Will you be okay?" I ask. I can see the devastation of losing something in his eyes.

"I'll be fine, Tris." He says, leaning closer to me as he rests his forehead against mine. For a moment I close my eyes, cherishing the scent and the closeness of Tobias.

"Goodnight." He says, I watch as he turns and leaves down the hallway, leaving me behind.
