Moving on

Tobias' POV

I sit up, stretching the aches and pains in my back away. I stand, still feeling more like a forty year old and less like the twenty-year-old that I am. Someone definitely needs to tell Zeke and Shauna that they need a new couch.

"Morning, Pumpkin." Zeke says, a little too perky for my liking. Fucking dick. "Coffee?" He says just as my nose hits the aroma. Well at least he is good for something.

"Yeah," I say, running my hand through my hair and taking a seat at the breakfast bar.

"So what's on the agenda today?" He asks, sliding the large mug of delicious hot coffee my way. Thank God for caffeine.

"I'll be heading down to apartment housing once they open," I explained.

"What, the couch wasn't as comfortable as you would have hoped?" Shauna says, as she brightly takes the seat beside me. Her hair is dangling wet, signaling she just had a shower.

"Oh yeah that bar up my ass just feels so damn great," I say, my voice dripping in sarcasm.

"Jeez, someone has their panties in a bunch." Zeke says, taking a sip of his coffee.

"I'm hoping to get an apartment near Tris at least, so I'm close to her for the baby," I explain, ignoring Zeke's comment all together.

"I think that's a good idea." Shauna says, smiling. "I can't believe you are having a little girl. "She squeals. Are you excited or bummed that it's not a boy?" She asks.

"Of course, he is bummed that it's not a boy. Shits already hard now he has to learn to talk to a girl now." Zeke says, trying to make light of things.

"Dude. What the fuck?" I gesture to him; I turn back to Shauna deciding not to egg him on. "I'm just thankful she is healthy." I answer.

"So are you getting a one bedroom or…." She asked. That's a good question.

I sit back thinking for a minute, up till now I haven't thought about that. I think about my first apartment at Dauntless. It was a small thing, a studio apartment. At the time I really didn't care what it looked like or the size of it. To me it wasn't what most people would call a home, but just a place to house my stuff and sleep. When I moved in with Christina, I really didn't put too much effort into the whole home- apartment thing. Needless to say, I was happy to let Christina do whatever she wanted in the apartment. As long as it made her happy and she didn't voice her unhappiness.

But this time it's different… I want it to be different, as this won't just be any kind of apartment, but a safe and comfortable place to raise my daughter.

I can't help but wonder if Tris and I are making the right choice in all of this. I think about all the little moments each one of us is bound to miss. I know the one that will miss more moments will be me, since Tris will be breastfeeding for the first year. Suddenly I get a urgent feeling to resolve this. Maybe this is wrong, maybe there is a solution to all of this.

"What if I asked Tris and the baby to move in with me?" I blurt out.

"What like…Move in?" Zeke asks, his expression more than confused.

"Four…Think about what you are saying. You're not even divorced yet. You and Tris are just trying to make this situation work…." Shauna points out. "Trying to force a relationship for the sake of the baby…"

"No. Shauna…. That's not what I meant." I pause taking a breath. What did I mean? "I don't want to miss things… I don't want Tris to miss things… wouldn't it make sense to have a large apartment and live under one roof?"

"Yes but…" She continues, picking her words more carefully than before. "Things are confusing enough for the both of you to add onto it. Tris is going through a lot right now, her hormones are raging and things can get really emotional. Things can be taken or shown differently than what they are. Not to mention when the baby comes things will get more confusing." She explains. "I think you and Tris need to learn how to crawl, walk and then run…Not just do a full on run." She says.

I nod my head; she does have a point.

"Four, why didn't you say that you were filing for separation?" Zeke asks, taking another gulp of his coffee.

"I don't know. I guess I just wanted to deal with things with Christina firsthand and not have it get back to her through the grapevine.

"Makes sense." Shauna says, her mouth full of toast.

"Well, I should be going…I'm probably late bringing Tris her breakfast.' I announced getting off the bar stool and getting my shoes on. I instantly regret my words the moment they leave my mouth….

"Bringing her breakfast…" Zeke says, masking his face with fake disappointment. "Not a pussy, yet you have a kid on the way with her… Not a pussy and yet you are whipped more than a puppy dog." He jokes.

"Shut up." Shauna says, slapping him beside the head for me.

"Thank you." I mutter as I head out the door closing it behind me. Dumb ass.

I walk down the all too familiar hallway, passing Tris' door. I go another four doors down before reaching my new place with the number 424. I slide my key into the keyhole, ready to turn it when I hear Tris' voice from down the hall.

"Hey there, neighbor," She greets me, walking in my direction, her smile is warm and welcoming. Beautiful. My eyes fall to her swollen stomach, my heart swelled with pride.

"Hey yourself." I greet back.

"Wow…Right down the hall… That works." She says, glancing back at her door and then back to mine. She smiles even wider, letting me see how happy she truly is with that. "Maybe I can borrow some sugar from you some time." She says, joking. Although I know if she really ever needed anything she can have whatever she wants. All she has to do is ask.

"Well, we will have to see about that," I say as I open the door to my very bare apartment. I step inside, looking around the room, the previous tenants painted the walls black. The kitchen is a mixture of black cabinets and stainless-steel appliances. Nothing special, but it will do for now. "Of course, that would mean that I have nothing…"

"What about your stuff? I mean wouldn't you want to go back and get it?" She asks, confused.

"You would think so." I say, running my hand through my hair. "But knowing Christina, especially given how mad she was… I would doubt there would be anything left worth saving." I explained.

"Wow. I'm sorry." Tris says, letting the Abnegation within her show.

"Don't be. There's nothing that can't be replaced," I say, nonchalantly. "Wanna go shopping with me?" I ask. To be honest I don't know if it's because I want her help or her company. Could be both.

"I would love to." She says, smiling at the idea. We headed out back the way we came in.

A/N

For the past three years now we have been virtual schooling our oldest from home. We were beyond impressed with all the improvements he was making. So much so that we decided to withdraw our youngest son from in person schooling and enrolled him in virtual schooling also.

We couldn't be happier. Sure there are tough times… But it's worth it. I can never stop recommending K12! Although it feels like sometimes we are playing that one show… Are you smarter than a 5th grader? LOL
