Chapter 21

Midnight cravings

Tris' Pov

"Tris, I'm here…" I hear Maggie call out to me. I all but waddled out of my bedroom and towards the kitchen. I don't know what pleases me more, my best friend being here or the fact that she brought the goods.

"Oh my god…You are a lifesaver," I cry out, taking the bag from her hands and digging in for myself. Maggie is frozen in place, her hands on the invisible bag that she was holding.

"You're welcome." She chuckles.

As I waste no time at all breaking open the lid to the delicious tub of cold desert. I forgo the damn spoon and just bite into the damn thing like a wild animal. The chocolate syrup and caramel is now covering my face. I stop briefly looking up at her amused face.

"Hungry?" She asks, her voice full of amusement.

"Shut up," I say, rolling my eyes. She bursts out laughing hard as she takes the paper bag from the counter and tosses it into the trash.

I take a seat on the bar stool with my face halfway into the pint of ice cream.

"At Least use a spoon…" Maggie says, sliding me a spoon across the breakfast counter. I finally take it when my mouth can no longer reach the ice cream anymore. Licking the sides of my mouth with my tongue, I continue to assault the cold deliciousness with the spoon.

"Can you pass me the pickles?" I say, suddenly needing something salty to go with all this sweet.

"Ugh. no." She cries out, her face scrunching together in disgust.

"Oh, come on…" I say, supporting my stomach with one hand as I struggle to get to my feet. Just another 8 weeks to go…It feels like a never ending marathon. I slowly make my way to the fridge and get the big jar of pickles. But just like that the craving is suddenly gone. I'm no longer interested in the delicious desert goodness.

"Tris, are you okay?" Maggie asks, as she watches me put back the pickle jar that I had just gone out of my way for. I glance towards Maggie, confused more than ever before the next craving comes out of my mouth.

"I really could go for one of those rodeo BBQ cheeseburgers," I confess. My nails scratched the all too stretched sensitive skin around my stomach.

"Oh no." She says, reaching for the pint of ice cream, she puts the lid back on and puts it into the freezer. "I'm not getting you that."

"But Maggie." I begin to whine with tears in my eyes. What the hell is wrong with me?

"No. No. You have your baby daddy four doors away, go knock on his door and make him go get it for you. It is the least he can do." She says, wiping the dropped ice cream from the counter.

"But… But…"

"Fine… I'll go… Get him." She says, like a lightbulb suddenly came on in her head. She rushes out the door and down the hall before I can even reach for her. So not fair, she knows I can't move as fast as I used to. I suddenly have the desire for the floor to open up and swallow me whole, as I hear the knocking on the door from down the hall.

"Maggie, what is it? Do you have any idea what time it is?" I hear Tobias say, groggily. I shut my eyes even tighter when I realized that he must have been asleep. Of course he was… it's what, three am?

"Is that your baby that Tris is carrying?" Maggie shouts out, I begin to fear that she will wake the neighbors as well. Damn fucking cravings….

"Excuse me?" He asks, his voice sounding harsher than it was a second ago. Obviously he doesn't like her questioning him.

"And would you do ANYTHING for her or that baby?" She continues, "ANYTHING?"

"Is everything alright with Tris?" He questions, "is it the baby?"

"Yes, that…. Alien wants so many things… Things that I think you should help get. Because I need some sleep… Have fun! Go get her a BBQ cheeseburger." She snaps, I hear the fainting sound of her shoes against the floor as she walks away.

"Okay," Tobias says as I hear some kind of commotion before his door closes and his footsteps get louder, coming towards me.

"Tris? Are you okay?" He asks, closing the front door behind him.

"Maggie... I don't know what the hell happened with Maggie." He says, pointing towards the door. "She said something about a burger?"He asks, his voice full of bewilderment.

"I'm…. I'm…." I begin to stutter, the Abnegation in me fighting against my wants and needs. I'm suddenly conflicted.

"Tris, if you need anything, just tell me. I'm in this too'" He says, desperately wanting to know what is happening.

"I have cravings." I blurt out, my voice sounding something between desperation and harsh. " I have cravings and they are driving me nuts! They wont stop!" I shout out, suddenly I feel like I'm going crazy. "And my socks don't match because I can't see my damn feet…." I cry out, as if that's the most important thing at the moment. I look up at Tobias who is standing frozen in shock. Great, he thinks I'm crazy now. Tears are rolling down my cheeks. They wont stop.

"Okay. Tris, everything is okay. Just breathe. This is all fixable. But you don't have to bother Maggie. I live four doors down and I am the father." He points out. "Okay?"

"Now… Socks…" He begins turning around as if on a mission.

"Actually, first I have to pee again," I say, standing up, I suddenly feel the warm liquid running down my legs. The thought only makes me cry even harder as embarrassment takes over me. "I thought I could make it." I whine, feeling more like a toddler that just wet her pants and not a mature expectant mother. My shoulders drop forward and my lip perks out. I refuse to look up at Tobias.

"It's okay. Alright." Tobias says, his hand cupping my elbow. He walks me slowly towards the bathroom. " I hold back the words that I want to say, fearing what he would think of me… Looks like my baby won't be the only one in diapers soon.

"So, what is it that you are craving?" He asks. I close my eyes, knowing that he has no idea what he is about to get into.

"I want a BBQ cheeseburger with extra sauce," I confess, as if I just murdered someone.

"Okay... I can head down to the cafeteria…. They always have cooks on for the overnight workers." He says, sounding like it's no big deal.

"Thank you," I say, right before the bigger storm hits. "Can you also pick up some onion rings, oh and waffle fries, with extra cheese sauce… oh and jalapenos." I mouth out quickly, stopping him in his tracks. He begins to look at me like I'm insane. "Oh and hot sauce…. Can you just bring me the bottle…That sounds so good to go with the ice cream that Maggie brought me." I stop only when I see Tobias' eyes about to pop out of his head and his mouth gaped open.

"Is that all?" He asks, amusement just underlining his voice.

"I hope so," I say, my body falling into exhaustion as I'm suddenly tired from the night's events.

"Alright. I'll be right back." He says, walking out the door and closing it right behind him.
