Chapter 23

All fun and games when you're nesting

Tris' POV

I lean exhausted against the kitchen counter, my eyes scanning the unbelievable amount of gifts that now sit in my living room. Knowing that there is almost an equal amount at Tobias' apartment.

"That was a great turn out." Maggie says as she brings in yet another large bag full of gifts. I'm overwhelmed by all the love that was shown to both Tobias and I today. I really have to hand it to Zeke and Maggie, they both worked so hard together to pull off what I can only describe as the all-time best co-ed baby shower ever.

Ever since the blow up at the baby's gender reveal party, it seems that Maggie and Zeke have taken their shared hate for Christina and turned it into something positive. Even Shauna has joined in on it. It was something that both Tobias and I were both happy to see. The merging between our closest friends. After all, I'm sure in the future there will be much more blending together because of a special little girl that is soon to be here.

Of course, we never suspected a thing when it came to the surprise that Maggie and Zeke both had in store for us. Not even this afternoon when Maggie came over screaming about some kind of last-minute meeting Eric was holding in the conference room. Some kind of emergency was happening out in Amity. As there have been growing concerns in that faction lately, I totally fell for it.

Yes, Eric was present when I arrived at the conference room. Along with many others that filled the void. I nearly had a heart attack when the group cheered out, "Surprise!" But luckily, I recovered quickly as I was embraced by everyone. I was once again taken by surprise when both my mother and father both greeted me, taking me into their arms. It was so touching that they would actually make the effort to be there for my baby shower.

It was later that I learned that Maggie saw to it that they would be there. Of course, the thought of them coming into Dauntless really entertained me. Although I have my suspicions about my mother being Dauntless in her younger years. Given her knowledge of our hallways and how to get around. My father, on the other hand, was never one for the heights that Dauntless was most proud of. Growing up, my father had no problem with expressing his thoughts on how reckless and insane the Dauntless are.

It was Tobias that arrived after me. Joining in on the fun, everyone could hear Zeke give the signal a mile away, complaining about how their boss, Gus, sent them on this assignment to fix the cameras that clearly haven't worked in weeks. When Zeke flicked on the lights to the conference room, we all popped up screaming, "Surprise!" It was a blast watching Tobias' face go from so serious to shake and then to the widest smile I have ever seen on his gorgeous face.

Even given our abnormal circumstances, I don't think there could be a prouder Daddy to be. Ever!

"Just one more box and then I'll go to bed," I keep telling myself. "Just one more." But I just, I just can't stop. With every box comes a desire to look into another one. I can't seem to control myself. The adorable duck on the towels with matching robes and booties. The light purple crib sheets with butterflies on them and the matching comforter to go with it. The bassinet with wheels and a rocking ability, with a storage shelf underneath for diapers and wipes, maybe even some blankets or clothes. Convenient for middle of the night feedings.

What's worse is with each opening of a box is another desire to figure out where it should go. The extra diapers, wipes, bottles, breast pump, clothes, back up sheets and baby towels, booties and a stroller for Tobias and I. Who knew that babies came with so much?

"Tris?" Tobias calls as he enters my apartment. I can hear how confused he must be when he probably sees the mess of the open and torn up boxes that sit by the door.

"I'm back here." I call out from my bedroom. I stand back looking at all the handy work I have done. I look towards my bed, realizing that there has to be a dozen more boxes to go through. Waiting for me, calling for me to go through them.

"Um…What is going on here?" Tobias asks. His eyes scanned over first my room, the baby's nursery corner and then finally me. "Have you slept at all?" He asks. It's then I realize that I'm still wearing the same clothes I did yesterday at the shower.

"Oh." I say, while everything is clicking together. "What time is it?" I ask. Noticing that he is in fresh clean clothes. His short hair is still wet from an obviously recent shower.

"It's seven in the morning" He answers, I swear I can see the accusations on his face as he continues to survey the room… He must think I'm crazy, no doubt.

"I can't stop," I admit. Looking at yet another box that is calling for me to open... Instead, I turn taking the blanket that is draped over the crib. I hold it up for Tobias to see as I explain, "I mean come on…Look at this, isn't it adorable." I squeak.

"I read something about this… in the books that the Doc suggested. I think they called it nesting." He begins.

"I am not nesting," I snapped, like the thought offended me.

"Tris. It's okay. It just means that you are…"

"I said, I am not nesting," I insist. I almost think about going to the kitchen and getting one of my many kitchen knives. Making him remember who he is talking to. He's not the only almighty in this apartment. He made sure of that when he trained me.

"Okay. Okay. You're right. You're not nesting… I have no idea what the hell I'm talking about." He says, holding his hands up, surrendering to me. "Tell you what… Why don't we eat a little something."

"WAIT! You brought food?" I ask, suddenly the task at hand is forgotten.

"Yes." He pauses, as if not sure what to answer… "I did." He finally says, his voice full of hesitation and his jawline tightening as if on edge.

"Well why didn't you just say so?" I say, suddenly eager to eat as my stomach rumbles at the thought of food. Needing nothing more than to stuff my face with anything that he brought. I maneuver around and head towards my kitchen. The offending words are soon forgotten. "Thank god, I'm starving." I announce, more cheerful than ever. I swear I leave a very confused Tobias in my bedroom, scratching his head.
