Chapter 26

I want my baby back.

Tris' POV

My tears have not stopped since the moment I heard Zeke's voice say who has my daughter. My new baby girl. But my tears have not stopped me from moving forward, from helping figure out what and how we are going to get her back. I will not let the tears betray me as weak and unable to be the person that I trained to be. Not when I need to be her the most… Dauntless.

"Tris, I promise we will get her back." Tobias assures me. His large hands cradling my head close to his. Forcing my eyes to focus on him, I see nothing but the same desperation I have to get her back as soon as possible and unharmed. I nod my head in response as the sorrow of the situation takes over me.

Zeke enters my hospital room minutes later. Tobias is furious as he drills the security guards. How can someone just come in and take a baby? How could this have happened? The baby was wearing an alarm bracelet for fuck sakes. I'm curious to hear that answer myself when Zeke comes into the room. He carries nothing but a tablet.

"I think I know." He says, responding to the security guard, breathlessly. No doubt he must have ran here from the control room. He holds up a tablet, as if wordlessly saying he can show us. He holds the tablet away from his body, letting all of us in the room to see. Tobias and I both watch intensely as Zeke pushes the play button. There are three different angles being shown to us. My eyes fall on the time and date stamped. November 1st, 4:42 AM. Just an hour after I last fed my baby.

At first nothing happens. I'm about to ask what we are supposed to be seeing when the door to my room opens slowly, a woman dressed in scrubs exits the room, closing the door slowly and carefully behind her. She cradles in her arms my baby girl. The nurse's face is hard to see, she was smart, keeping her face down and all as she hides my daughter in her oversized coat. It's not until she gets to the double doors that lead to the lobby do we see the nurse take out a small pair of scissors and cut off our daughter's wrist band, tossing it on the floor. Her only mistake is two seconds before the recording ends…. She lifts her head as the doors close behind her, giving us a clear image of her face… Christina.

"Son of a bitch." Tobias mutters. His jaw is tighter than I have ever seen it. I reach out, trying to comfort him. I slowly turn, needing to take a seat as the sting between my legs aches more and more. "Are you alright?" Tobias asks, as he sees me twitch in pain as I sit.

"I'm fine," I answer, hating that I feel so weak. But I can't let that show. I need to stay strong for him and our baby. "What do we do now?" I ask.

"I checked the footage that leads to the apartment…She didnt go home. We lost her in the crowds once she left the infirmary with the morning commute." He explains. "Four, Tris... I'm so sorry I don't have any more information." He apologizes. My heart breaks for him, knowing that in some way he blames himself.

Tobias nods, knowing there isn't much more to say.

"Where would she go?" I ask… thinking more like an Erudite than a Dauntless. I don't care who sees me.. I need to find my daughter.

"I don't know." Tobias says, nodding as he stares at the ground. He runs his hand through his hair, pulling at the ends. "Factionless… maybe?"

"No. not her style," I answered, shaking my head. Christina is too picky. Living factionless would mean she wouldn't have the things that make her, her. No home, no safe place… A small selection of clothing. Not to mention makeup and fashion is out of the question. I think about the possibilities of me being wrong, perhaps she did go there. Knowing that we wouldn't think to check there. I think of the scarce amount of food and the lack of safety. Worry fills my heart, thinking if we don't find her. "What about her mother's? What if she went back to Candor?" I ask.

"Would they even allow her in there?" Zeke asks, brainstorming along with us. I take notice that he runs his hands through his hair, just like Tobias does when he is thinking something through.

"It's a shot." Tobias answers.

"Well, we have to be cautious. Chris is a woman on the run with a newborn…" Zeke states the obvious.

"I'm going with you," I announce.

"Tris, you just had a baby."

"Yes, I am very much aware. But nothing is going to keep me here while she is out there somewhere," I explain, my voice laced with a threatening warning. No one and I mean no one should try to stop me. "Just get me my pants," I ordered. Tobias turns frantically looking around for my sweats. I turn towards Zeke asking him to grab a few things for the baby. She is going to need a diaper change, wipes… And then I ask the most embarrassing thing of all. "Can you also grab a few of those adult…"I pause, clearing my voice. "Adult diapers." They both stand before me with their hands full of all of my demands, ready to go. "Alright what are you two waiting for? Let's go!" I demand, waddling past both of them. I hold my hands out for better balance. Zeke and Tobias both move along my side, making sure I have full and complete balance as we head out the door.
