Chapter 27
Making things right
Tobias' POV
From the moment I heard Tris' cries, her voice was full of emotions… I knew something was wrong. I just never thought it would be something this terrible. Our daughter is gone, and I don't know what's worse. That she was taken from right under our noses or that it was Christina, my soon to be ex-wife that took our baby girl.
Christina has always been a handful. Reacting to her emotions quicker than she should and never thinking about her actions. She is a lot of things… But I never thought she would go to this extreme.
I didn't know what to think or say when Tris insisted on coming with us to find the baby. On the one hand, I knew there was no talking her out of it. She is everything a mother should be and more. On the other hand, I knew how much pain she was already in. The doctors encouraged her to rest and heal. Running around town looking for a deranged woman and our baby is definitely going against Doctor's orders. I didn't want her to hurt herself, but I knew that if our shoes were reversed… There would be nothing that anyone could do to stop me.
Zeke drove us to Candor as fast as he could. Not caring about the potholes or driving slow for that matter. My heart broke each time that Tris looked down at her watch to keep track of how long it had been since the baby was fed last. The guilt is hard to bear. To know that somehow, I had an unwilling hand in all of this. I may not have been the one to take the baby, but I was the fuel to the fire that started all this in motion.
"She'll be okay," I say trying to soothe Tris the best I can. I reach through the front seat where she is sitting, rubbing a small circle on her left shoulder. I wish somehow, I could make this all go away. Tris doesn't answer, she only nods slightly as a tear falls from her eyes.
"Almost there." Zeke announces. "Just a few more minutes." He continues to maneuver the car roughly. Finally, the car comes to a rough stop, he pops the shift in park, and we all jump out. Well Zeke and I at least. Tris on the other hand needs a little more help as she winces in pain as she stands with the help of the car door. She waddles the best she can towards the main doors of Candor with Zeke and I by her side for support.
Zeke is the first one to reach for the doors, swinging the door open and holding it for Tris and me to enter first. Without a word, I observe the scene before me. Everything is quiet. Dead quiet. The woman at the front desk is stiffer than normal.
"Can I help you?" She asks, her smile a little too wide for it to be real.
"Hello, we are from Dauntless. We are looking for a wanted woman and a missing child. The woman goes by Christina Perks." Zeke states, he opens his coat pocket pulling out the surveillance photo of Christina and our baby walking down the hall and out the doors of Dauntless infirmary.
"Oh yes, but they are not here." The girl answers rather too quickly. She glances at Tris giving her a sympathetic look.
"Oh really? Well, you wouldn't mind if we questioned her mother…. Stephanie Ross." Zeke pushes. I can see the woman hesitate on the computer as she ponders what to do. Zeke and I both share a look of suspicion; she obviously knows something.
"Listen to me…." Tris says, her voice furious. "My daughter is barely a day old. She hasn't eaten in four hours…. Now I know you know something. So just tell us what you know or I swear I will come over there and beat that fake ass smile off your face myself and there isn't a damn thing anyone can do to stop me."
My eyes nearly pop out of my head, partially surprised that Tris had it in her to threaten anyone. I'm even more shocked at how aroused I am by a threatening Tris. I'll admit it took me by surprise. I see defeat in the woman's eyes as she sighs out before finally saying, "Fourteenth floor, apartment 12." The girl says eyeing towards the elevator. "I rather be factionless than get in the middle of this." She says, letting her candor show as she finally tells us the truth.
"Thank you," I say, my jaw clenching together harder than ever. Fucking bitch.
We move all together towards the elevator. Pushing the number fourteen for the floor. Just as the elevator doors closes, I can't help the words that come out of my mouth. "Fucking Bitch."
"They're here. Tris was right." Zeke says, I can see him gearing up for what's next as he double checked his pockets for handcuffs and a taser and a gun. "Whatever it takes," he says, when he sees both Tris and I staring at him.
"Thank you, Zeke." Tris says, gratefully.
"Of course, anything for my little Goddaughter." He says, proudly. Tris' eyebrows crease together as she glances at me confused. "What? Was I wrong?" He asks, seeing the confusion on our faces. To be honest I haven't thought about it till now. But after tonight…
"Nah, man. You're not. I would be honored if you would be our daughter's Godfather," I announce, reaching out to shake his hand. He takes it happily and excitedly.
"Me too." Tris says, reaching both arms around his neck, he leans in accepting her hug.
"Good. Now if only you would give that sweet baby a name already." He says, his voice laced with humor. If only he knew we already decided on a name… We were just waiting for the right time to announce it. Tris and I just nodded, agreeing that we are still working on the name.
The doors open before any more words could be exchanged. Zeke is the first one out of the elevator cabin, his right hand on his gun, ready to draw it if needed. We follow close behind, I keep Tris behind me in the hall just in case. Zeke's right, we have to be prepared for the worst and hope for the best. Christina is on the run, a wanted woman. A wanted woman with our newborn, who soon will be pushed into a corner. God only knows what she will do when that finally happens.
"She's mine!" We hear clear as day from down the hall. We all pause knowing damn well whose voice that is.
"Sweetheart, she doesn't look a thing like you." Another woman's voice says, her voice just as high. We can hear the growing importance coming from both voices.
"That's because she looks like her father." Christina yells back.
"Her father? Who would that be?" The voice continues, "Sweetheart that baby doesn't look more than a day old… And you don't look postpartum to me." She points out. Whoever it is arguing with Christina, they are no dummy. I'll give them that.
"Oh don't pull this shit on me mom. No one is on trial here." Christina fires back.
"So then tell me, who is her father? Where did she come from? Because it's certainly not from you."
Zeke raises his left hand, ready to knock, he looks back at Tris and me making sure this is a good idea.
"I don't believe this. You are my mother. I need your help." Christina cries out. A maneuver I know too well of as she tries to manipulate the situation.
"Don't give me that. Christina, you are the strongest girl I know. You are capable of a lot of things… Including what I fear are the honest answers to my questions." The woman continues, Zeke finally nods his head knocking on the door harder than he probably needs to.
"Dauntless police." Zeke yells out.
"Shit." We hear muttered from the other side of the door.
I glance back at Tris, her eyes closed as we both wish for the best outcome.
"I need to get the baby. We need to get out of here." Christina says, we hear chaos from within the apartment.
"Like hell you are, not until you answer my questions. And why are the Dauntless police here?" The woman continues, we hear the sound of what must be heels coming towards the door calmly before the door swings open. "May I help you?" The woman greets us. I can hear the irritation in her voice, she obviously wants answers of her own.
"Ma'am, we are here for Christina Perks." Zeke says, in the firmest voice I've heard in a while.
"I see. May I ask what this is about?" The woman asks, desperate to get some answers one way or another.
"Ma'am, that's Dauntless business… I'm afraid." Zeke answers.
Suddenly the sound of the baby crying signaling her distress breaks the silence. Tris can no longer be silent as her mother's instincts kick in from the sound of her baby's discomfort.
"My baby." Tris cries, her eyes frantically looking around for the little bundle of joy. Her eyes land on the baby that is in the arms of Christina who is standing back against the farthest wall of the apartment. Christina's face is full of tears with defeat in her eyes.
"She's not yours…She's mine." Christina says between tears. Slowly, we all step in. Zeke keeping his hand on his hoister. As I hold my left arm out to keep Tris back. I want nothing more than to run across the apartment and take my daughter from Christina, but it's not the best option. I can see the emotions running through Christina as she glares at Tris. I fear this won't end well. "She should have been mine. Just like Four…Just like Will before you took him from me. You are always taking everything from me." Christina says, her voice enraged as she fires at Tris.
"Christina, please." Tris says calmly. But her words only enrages Christina more.
"No." Christina begins. "She's mine. You can't take her away from me. Not this time." Christina says, getting more and more angry with each word. "I won't let you take her from me, like you did with Will and now Four."
"Will? Christina, it was an accident. I would have never…. Christina please…" I fear for my daughter who so innocently lays in her arms. Both women refused to give in. I slowly push Tris back, against her will.
"Just stay back." I mutter under my breath.
"What? No." Tris says, stubbornly. But she needs to know her stubbornness won't win here.
"Tris. Please. Listen to me. There is no way Christina is going to give you that baby. You know that and I know that. Please…. Stand back, let me take care of this." I urged her. Something in her finally backs down, giving in, she turns to stand by the front door instead. I take a deep breath, turning back around to Christina. I slowly reproach her with my hands up showing that I'm not a threat.
"Christina," I begin.
"No. Four. She is my baby." Christina says, tightening her grip on my daughter. My daughter cries quietly, she is obviously uncomfortable.
"I know. You're right. She is yours… She was meant for you… Before Tris intervened and took what we both deserved." I go along, my voice more tender than it ever has been. "I see that now. We can leave tonight. I have connections in the factionless, we can disappear tonight. Just you, me and the baby," I say, taking another step closer to her. This time I see her shoulders relax, believing in my words.
"Four!" Tris cries out from behind us. I take a deep breath, knowing damn well this is going to hurt her as much as it does me.
"Shut up Tris. You ruined everything. Chris and I are a family. You need to accept that," I say firmly, towards Tris.
"Oh Four. You really mean that?" Christina asks, her body starting to relax as I take yet another step closer to her and the baby.
"I really do," I say, "go pack… Let's get out of here." I insist, gesturing towards a few bags that are opened with clothing hanging out of them.
"Oh Four, I love you so much. I'm sorry for the past year, things have been so terrible." She goes on.
"I know, sweetheart," I say, using her favorite nickname that she always liked me using.
"You have to know it was just sex with those other men…It meant nothing." She continues, confessing everything I already knew.
"It's alright… Really. We will figure it all out later." I insist, hoping to move her along.
"Okay." She says, smiling wider than I have seen her in months. It's her this time taking another step towards me, her face tilting up towards mine. Her eyes half closed, seeing if I will in fact accept her. I know I have to, not willing to take a chance while my daughter is in her arms. I raise my right hand to her face, leaning down the rest of the way I let my lips touch hers. I feel nothing but hatred and disgust the moment I feel her lips against mine. "I love you." She says when we break apart.
"I love you too." I return. With no more words she hands me my daughter and turns towards the bags that are sitting on the table to repack them. I more than willingly take my daughter into my arms, breathing a little less heavy knowing that she is safe in my arms and not in Christina's. I take a step back. I gesture to Zeke to do the honors now that my baby daughter is safe and sound.
Zeke happily nods his head and digs his hand cuffs from his back pocket. He closes the gap rather quickly between him and Christina. Taking her by surprise from the back, he forced her hands behind her back and restrained her. She begins to scream, struggling to free herself, calling my name and questioning why I would allow this to happen to her after what we just spoke about. I don't bother to answer her, as I turn and close the space between me and my daughter's mother. Handing the baby over to Tris, she begins to cry as she kisses our sweet baby everywhere. Tears of joy running down her face.
"Welcome home!" We hear the second Tris opens the door to her apartment. Our heads snap up shocked by the sight before us. A large banner hanging on the dining room wall, "Welcome home, Baby Girl!"
The crowd is small, nothing too bad, thankfully. Just Zeke, Shauna, Uriah, Marlene and Maggie. Maggie is the first one to make it to Tris and the baby, wrapping her arms around them. Zeke makes his way to me, slapping my right hand and firmly shaking it before letting go. It's all smiles and cheers.
After Christina was captured, she was taken to Erudite for hospitalization. Tris and I both agreed she needed help, not jail time. But we made sure she wouldn't be a threat to us or the baby ever again. The judge that we spoke to agree to granting us a restraining order. Christina can't come within 100 yards of me, Tris, the baby or Dauntless, for that matter. As long as Christina is getting the help she needs... That's all that matters.
We had the Doctors check out the baby the minute we got back to the infirmary. Thankfully, she was fine. Tris fed her on the way back, so she was more than a happy, sleepy baby in her mommy's arms. We were discharged hours later.
"So do we have a name for this sweet baby yet?" Shauna asks, as she receives the baby from Tris. Shauna looks like she is on cloud nine when she smiles at the little bundle of joy.
"We sure do." Tris answers, she glances at me. Letting me have the honors of announcing the baby's name.
"Meet Sofia Elizabeth Prior. But Sofy for short." I say as the proud father I am. Just like that everything is right in the world… My friends, my daughter and my…Tris.
A/N
Life is precious and a blessing. Something that we all should never take for granted. Something or someone can easily be taken away in a blink of an eye. Here one day and then gone the next. Remember to be thankful for that. Remember to cherish the little moments of life and stop stressing about the moments we can't change.
