Devon was seated at his desk when RC entered his office.
"Ah, Reginald, good afternoon."
"Good afternoon, Mr. Miles."
"No need for formalities. Please, call me Devon."
"Thanks . . . Devon."
"Have a seat. How are you settling in?"
"Southern California is a lot different from Chicago. But Bonnie and Michael are helping me adjust."
"Those two will have you squared away in no time. And has your father received the check for the use of the garage?"
"Yeah, he did. It sure was a welcome surprise."
"We are the Foundation for Law and Government. It would be hypocritical of us to go after those who abuse their position but not pay our own bills."
"Yeah, well . . . it was no big thing."
"On the contrary, Reginald, it was a very big thing. Without you, Kitt would not have been repaired in time for Michael to stop Nordstrom. Had he gotten away with the Cernium 116. Well, that would have been a very big thing indeed."
"And what about TC's college tuition?"
"I beg your pardon?"
My cousin, TC. He and Melissa are classmates. That's how she learned about the garage. He called to let me know that his college tuition was paid in full. For the entire year. I'm here to say thanks. Another welcome surprise, though really not necessary."
"I had nothing to do it."
"Michael?"
"Melissa." Devon steepled his fingers and leaned back in his chair. "Wilton Knight was a billionaire. With a B. When he died, Melissa inherited his wealth. I would hazard a guess that she paid your cousin's tuition. As a way of showing her personal appreciation for your assistance."
"Guess?"
"Melissa is 18. She has full control of her fortune."
"Umm . . ."
"You needn't worry, Reginald. Melissa has a good head on her shoulders, especially when it comes to money. Wilton made sure of that."
"I was more thinking of Michael. Is he a billionaire like his sister."
Devon paused to consider his response. "Not as such, no."
"Hey, man, not trying to overstep here, you know."
"Michael has Kitt, as his legacy from Wilton. Anything else . . . well, that's for Michael to share."
RC nodded. "I'm onboard with that." He checked his watch. "Speaking of which, Michael and I are meeting up for some hoops. I'd better get moving."
And with that, RC left and Devon returned to his paperwork.
