Chapter 11
School house playhouse
"You guys, deserve an explanation" said Poppy.
"Well, we have been saying that since we got here" said Ben. Kissy Missy then walked over to a power box and Poppy opened it with a key. She then pulled the lever inside of it. An elevator came down and they all got on it before it started to go up.
"How are you all holding up?" Asked Poppy.
"Bruised, scratched, slightly freaked out, but we'll live" said Ben.
"Thanks for the masks, Kissy" said Max.
"Huh? I didn't give you any masks" said Kissy.
"I know you didn't," said Gwen. "It was something with floppy ears".
"Floppy ears?," thought Poppy. "But, that can't. She was suppo-". The elevator then stopped next to a control platform.
"Do the honours?," asked Poppy. "It's the big red button". Ben walked over and pressed it. Suddenly, the lights came on. He then got back onto the elevator and it started to go down.
"The Prototype knows we're coming," said Poppy. "You try to escape, he'll kill you before you can even reach that front door".
"We'll cross that bridge when we come to it" said Ben.
"I think he's starting to walk across it," said Kissy. "So, you could meet up with him earlier".
"Kissy's right," said Max. "The more we act, the Prototype could react. So, for all intensive purposes, we need to be ready".
"Well, we've seen how capable you all are," said Poppy. "You killed Huggy. You killed Mommy. You freed me. GYou are perfect for this. Catnap is coming, keep yourselves safe. We'll be in touch. Ollie will call you". The Tennysons got off the elevator and it went back up. They then heard the phone ring.
"Hey, hey. It's me again," said Ollie. "It seems like Poppy pretty much explained everything now and she's turned on the dome's back up power. Now the plan from here is pretty simple, we need to restore power to the gas production zone. Some where on the porch of Home Sweet Home, there is a power cord you can plug in underneath the statue". The three of them then ran to Home Sweet Home and looked around the porch.
"Found it" said Ben. The three of them then grabbed it and pulled into the area underneath the statue and then plugged it in.
"Awesome, that's that done," said Ollie. "Remember that generator you turned on inside of Home Sweet Home? Well, that was the back up generator for just that building. Each building has one and we've just rerouted the back up power from Home Sweet Home".
"Well, that's good to hear" said Gwen.
"If we reroute the back up power from the Toy store, the Playhouse, the Councillor's office and the school," said Max. "We should be able to restore the power to the Gas Production Zone"
"We only need to use two of the buildings," said Ollie. "But, where to go? Everywhere is pretty dangerous, especially that Playhouse. So, you best options for now is either the Toy Store or the School. I suggest you go to the school, as Catnap usually leaves that place alone. I'll send you the key now". A key then appeared in one of the tubes and Grandpa Max grabbed it.
"Guess we're going to school" said Gwen.
"Some how, I feel like I'm gonna hate this school a lot more than usual" said Ben. They then left the towards the school house. They unlocked the front door and headed inside.
"Well, this is creepy" said Ben.
"Stay close" said Max as they continued to walk.
"Okay, make this quick", said Ollie. "Turn on the generator, leave, and plug the power cord into the centre. But, be careful. I don't think I can connect to you on that side of the dome. But, be careful, they're-." The phone then cut off.
"That's not good" said Gwen. The school's P.A system came on.
"This is Miss Delight speaking, please excuse the interruption. Students, please remain in your seats until the bell has rung and no going in the halls without a hall pass". The P.A then cut off.
"I, think that's what Ollie was trying to warn us about" said Ben.
"Gee, you think?" Said Gwen. Max then saw a green power outlet and launched the green hand at it, absorbed the electricity and transferred it to another conduit and a gate opened.
"Come on" said Max. They walked down the hallways and started to look through the rooms.
"Hey, I found a battery" said Gwen. They then took the battery to a room where two Battery slots were. Gwen then shoved the battery into one of the slots.
"That's one," said Gwen. "Now, we just need the other one". They then heard the sound of what they could only describe as horseshoes clopping on the floor.
"What the heck was that?" Asked Ben.
"Someone who probably wants us dead", answered Max. "Come on, we need to find another battery". They continued to walk through the school. But, when they entered one of the classrooms, the P.A turned on.
"Wait. I recognise you. Yes, I remember you. You've been here before. But, how are you….alive? Hm? Barb? Oh, Barb says you're looking for your co-workers. Catnap wouldn't like that you're here. You should leave, for your own safety".
The P.A system then turned off.
"Oh no" said Ben.
"Come on, let's find that other battery" said Max.
"Maybe it's in the vent?" Suggested Gwen. After climbing through the vent, Gwen found the battery.
"Let's get this back to the outlet" said Gwen.
After they placed the battery in the slot, Max used the Grab Pack to transfer the electricity from one conduit to another and a roller door opened up to which they walked through. Ben then found a piece of paper.
"Hey guys, look at this" said Ben.
"What's that?" Asked Max.
"It's, a letter from…Catnap" said Ben.
"Catnap?," asked Gwen. "That giant cat Poppy and Ollie were referring to?".
"Yeah, him" answered Ben.
"What does it say?" Asked Max.
"It says," said Ben. "'I know you're in there. And I know what you want. But won't get it. You're just like them, you poke and prod. Enjoy cannibalism. If you step out, I'll rip you in half. Now,I got to take care of some heretics'. That can't be good".
"So, Catnap locked Miss Delight in here" said Max. The trotting sound was then heard again.
"We gotta turn on the generator, fast" said Gwen. The PA system then turned on.
"Not a good listener, are you? You're a lot like the other humans in that way. I wonder of your screams will sound like their's too… Mmmmmm…I look forward to finding out". The PA system then turned off.
"Well, THAT'S not good in the slightest" said Gwen.
"We need to turn that Generator on, now" said Ben. As Ben walked away, his foot hit something. He looked down and saw a book. He then picked it up.
"'Meet the Smiling Critters'?," Wondered Ben. "Hey, Ollie mentioned them. He said that Catnap was a part of them". Ben opened it and gasped.
"I, remember these" said Ben.
"You do?" Asked Gwen.
"Yeah, their show was on all the time," answered Ben. "Though, something's off".
"Off?" Asked Gwen.
"Yeah," answered Ben. "None of them are wearing clothes. I remember Kickin' Chicken wearing a jock jacket. Bubba Bubbaphant was wearing a sweater vest. Bobbie Bearhug was wearing a dress. Craftycorn was wearing a skirt. Picky Piggy was wearing overalls. Hoppy Hopscotch was wearing a vest. And Dogday was wearing a jacket, same with Catnap."
"The Smiling Critters cartoon was made in the 80s and was revived in the late 90s," said Gwen. "The ones you saw on TV were the revived ones".
"They also look like the statues we saw in the centre of Playcare" said Max.
"So, that means that they were the mascots of Playcare" said Ben.
"I remember something about Catnap's toy being discontinued for a year because something that happed with the spray it made," said Gwen. "The toy was later given out for free for those who had ordered it".
"Hhhhhmmmm, if they made a monster version of Catnap," said Max. "They must've made one for each of the Smiling Critters".
"Maybe they can help us?" Wondered Ben.
"We'll focus on that when we get out of here," said Max. "First, we need to turn on the school's generator". Both Ben and Gwen nodded. They then continued to walk the hallways and looked through the doors until-.
"Found it" said Gwen. They opened the door and there it was. Max used the Grab Pack to turn it on.
"Now then," said Max. "Let's plug it in before-*gasp* LOOK OUT!". Max tackled Ben and Gwen to the floor as something smashed into the Generator.
"Looks like we got some naughty students". Walking towards them, was Miss Delight. Her hair was frizzled, her clothes ragged and torn and her face was cracked, revealing human teeth. In her hand, was a weapon made out of a ruler, rope and pencils.
"Gross" groaned Ben. Miss Delight then charged forward.
"Run!" Shouted Max. They got up and started running, with Miss Delight in hot pursuit.
"Sinyu Invisibis" said Gwen. Chunks of the ground came out and hurled towards Miss Delight. She just smashed them with her weapon. Miss Delight then jumped into the air and pounced on Gwen. Before she could bring it down, someone knocked Miss Delight off of her. Turns out Ben had turned Eye Guy.
"Get away from my cousin, you freaky doll!" Shouted Eye Guy. He then fired a laser out of one of his eyes. But she just dodged and shoulder tackled Eye Guy.
"Back off!" Shouted Max before whacking Miss Delight over the head with an old backpack. THAT got Miss Delight's attention. Eye Guy then shot her in the back.
"Hey! Follow me!" Shouted Eye Guy. He then ran off, with Miss Delight giving chase. As Eye Guy ran through the halls, he started to fire lasers from his eyes and knocked over lockers. But, Miss Delight dodged them all. Eye Guy then turned around and fired a freeze ray from his eyes, covering Ms. Delight in ice. But, she was still moving. Eye Guy then fired a heat ray at her. The ice melted, but so did her plastic skin and both her hair and clothes started to burn.
"Well, that only made it worse," said Eye Guy before he heard the dreaded beeping sound. "Oh man". In a flash of red light, Eye Guy turned back into Ben.
Ben saw a broken piece of wood and grabbed it. Miss Delight limped towards him, brought it up and brought it down. Ben shoved the broken piece of wood forward.
SHINK!
Miss Delight's weapon then fell to the floor. She had been skewered. She then coughed up blood, which splattered all over Ben's hands. She then fell to the floor. Ben didn't do anything. He just looked at his blood stained hands and he could hear buzzing in his ears.
"Ben!".
Ben looked up and saw Gwen and Max running towards him.
"Are you okay?" Asked Max.
"Yeah. I'm, I'm fine" answered Ben.
"Come on," said Max. "Let's find a way out of here".
They then found an exit in the form of an open roller door. When they walked through it, they saw a large cavern system underground. Loads of scaffolding and construction equipment were there too.
"Whoa" said Ben in awe.
"This cavern must go under the factory" said Gwen.
"Hey, look at this" said Ben. On the floor was another Grab Pack hand. But, this one was orange and it's fingers were in the shape of a gun.
"Wonder what this does?" Wondered Max. He attached it to his Grab Pack, then, it fired a flare.
"Sweet, a flare gun" said Ben.
"Well, into the thick of it" said Max. As they walked through the caverns, the wood and metal creaked and groaned as they walked.
"This does NOT look safe" said Gwen.
"Stay together," said Max. "We can't afford to be separated".
"Why hasn't Ollie called us yet?" Asked Ben.
"The walls of the cave must be stopping the signal from getting through" answered Max. He then placed his hands in front of Gwen and Ben, stopping them. What they saw, shocked them. THERE, on a ledge, was Catnap. Praying to a shrine made out of old toys and a skeleton.
"What's he doing?" Whispered Gwen.
"Praying" whispered Max.
"Let's go before he sees us" whispered Ben. They then tiptoed across the bridge to the other side. They then saw a door, and what was written above it.
"Playhouse?," wondered Ben. "Isn't that the place where Ollie told us NOT to go to?".
"Better in there then in here with HIM just a few steps away" said Gwen. Max used his Grab Pack to open the door.
"Quick, inside" said Max. They ran inside and the door closed.
"Well, we're in" said Ben. They then heard giggling.
"What was that?" Asked Gwen. A small, ruined Bobbie Bearhug plush crawled out towards them. Max then fired the flare gun and the plush retreated.
"Well, now we know how to repel those plushies" said Ben.
"Can you do the same thing with your magic, Gwen?" Wondered Max.
"If we see another ruined critter, I'll give it a try" said Gwen. Thankfully, it did work. The flare from Grandpa Max's flare gun hand from his Grab Pack and Gwen's magic blast. However, Ben was still processing what was happening. Did he really kill Huggy? Did he mean to kill Mommy? Did he mean to kill Miss Delight?
"Hey, look over there" said Gwen. She was pointing to a yellow door.
"Wonder where it leads?" Wondered Ben. They opened the door and saw that it was a cell block.
"Great, prison cells" said Gwen.
"Let's go" said Max. They walked into the cell block. Then…
"You…You're Poppy's Angels".
