Followed by Shartan, Kal climbed up the stairs before taking cover behind an overturned barrel. From there, he could see most of the roofs of the area, a mix of terraces and ocre-colored domes, strewn about with condensers, smokestacks, converters, antennas and other unidentifiable equipment, with narrow alleyways separating buildings, some crossed by archways, but all the gaps could be jumped across easily enough. But all that faded into the background as Kal spotted to his left a pair of stormtrooper scouts, white armor scorched by near misses, huddled behind a low wall being blown to dust by the hail of blaster let loose by a group of about ten hostiles, humans and other humanoids, wearing loose jumpsuits and light mesh armor, armed with a variety of blasters. The hostiles weren't wearing any uniform and didn't have any visible mark of allegiance, which would mean deniable forces, likely from the Republic, some kind of local resistance group or a minor gang, all which were potentially interested in either harassing First Order forces or even driving them off Salaud. But then again it was beyond Kal's purview and interests and he let that line of though drop.
Just before crouching back, Kal spotted two more scouts on his right, separated from the first pair by the hostile group; but those two were dead or wounded, one with his armor still smoking from blaster impacts, the other with a vibroblade sticking from his neck seal, blood coloring his armor crimson. At least two of the hostiles were down, one slumped over some kind of machinery, the other being dragged by one of his allies, but the surviving scouts were still getting overwhelmed. Thankfully for the stormtroopers, the hostiles were either untrained or had gotten sloppy, as their flank was wide open to Kal and his fireteam, who decided to take advantage of that immediately.
"Deku, Five-Seven, move up. Sarge, got visual on two scouts alive and kicking, two more down and a handful of unknown baddies. Engaging the frakheads." Kal commed quickly, adrenaline nearly overriding his training, but he still reined it in for a moment, before rising back, shouldering his blaster. Time slowed down as he drew a bead on the closest hostile, a middle-aged Nautolan with extensive facial scarring. Warned by something, his target had started to turn when Kal fired, but that just allowed him to appreciate the alarmed look on the alien's face before his shot sent him to the ground. Switching his blaster to full auto, he sprayed the remaining hostiles, the unaimed volley sending them into cover and raising clouds of dust and shower of sparks as the bolts hit either brick or metal. Even if the volley did little damage to the hostiles, it let Shartan hit one of them with a well-placed shot and Deku and Five-Seven to rejoin them without opposition.
Turning towards the new arrivals, Kal barked "Get into cover, right side and light them up! Stat!" Following their orders, they moved behind a smokestack and added their blasters to the fusillade, preventing the opponents from doing much more than a few pot shots from behind cover. Rather than waiting for reinforcements or for the surviving scouts to flank the hostiles, Kal jumped out of cover, trusting his fireteam to keep the remaining hostiles' heads down. Of course in such a situation, flanking or using explosives to finish the suppressed hostiles, whatever collateral damage it would have caused, would have been easier, but owing to their original mission of riot control, his fireteam didn't have any. And Kal preferred to see his enemy die by his hand if possible anyway.
