"Welcome home milady." Robert took Cora's hand in his and guided her inside the house. The contractors finished remodelling the house a couple of days ago. Cora had arranged for the movers to move all the big things yesterday. Today only the smaller things were left and now they finally could move in. There was still a lot to do, but their bed was here in this house.
This month all three other houses would go up for sale. It was weird to know they would now be in this house together. Even though over the last months they had been together always in one of their houses. It still felt different to start together in this one.
Cora smiled up at Robert. "We are finally starting the next chapter together."
Robert stepped back. "Did we not do that when we said yes?"
"Oh yes we did, but we were still standing half in the previous one. With this move we are leaving our single lives behind, and we enter family life."
This made Robert step closer to her, he put his hands on her hips. "Are you telling me you are expecting?"
Cora's smile dropped. "No, I am not." She had hoped to be pregnant by now. God knew they tried, but nothing had happened yet. What if she could not get pregnant?"
She felt Robert's hand under her chin, he lifted her face. "We will keep trying." He kissed her.
"We may need to see a doctor." She said quietly.
Robert took her hand in hers and guided her towards the music room. He sat her down on the piano bench and he scooted next to her. He opened the lid and started playing. He did not know what song he should play so he decided to improvise.
"Darling you are perfect. When you smile the clouds fade away. When you laugh the thunder quiets down." Robert started singing softly. "Spending time with you is all I want. Making love with you is all I need. Having your arms around me fills my heart."
Cora wrapped her arm around his back when he sang those words.
"You are my world, my everything. My everlasting love is with you. Whatever comes and whatever lies between us. My love will always be with you."
He kept playing but stopped singing. He amazed himself with this. Cora had rested her head against his shoulder, and he did not want to stop this romantic moment.
"I love you." Cora whispered after a while and Robert finished the song. "I did not know you could sing."
"I did not know that myself." He wrapped his arm around her shoulder, and she instantly wrapped her other arm around him, snuggling close to him. "Darling, if having children never happens for us, I will not love you any different than I do now. You stole my heart, and I never want it back. I am yours whatever the future has in store for us."
"Are you sure?" Cora asked with an unsure voice.
Robert's heart broke hearing her insecurity and doubt. Turning more towards her, he put his hand under her chin. "Darling, please do not doubt. And if it helps you, we will go see a doctor." He kissed her.
Cora did not respond, and Robert knew that she was really worried.
The doorbell rang and Cora immediately got up to open it. Robert closed the piano and followed her. He heard familiar voices.
"We thought to come and see your new beautiful house and help unpacking." It was Rosamund who cheerfully greeted Cora. Robert was very relieved she was here; Cora would tell her about her doubts. Rosamund always knew how to cheer her up again.
"Hello, little one," Robert said cheerfully when he spotted Peter. He reached out to him, and Rosamund handed him over.
She saw a shadow on Cora's face, but she was not sure she should address that right now. "Why don't you boys go and get a drink? In the meantime, Cora can show me the house and what needs to be done."
Cora tried to keep a smile on her face, but it hurt how enthusiastic Robert was seeing Peter. She could not give him what he wanted the most, even though he promised her it was not.
Rosamund hooked her arm in Cora's and as soon as Marmaduke and Robert disappeared into the kitchen she asked: "Do you want to share with is wrong?"
Cora shrugged.
"You do not have to, but I want you to know that you can always talk to me."
"I think that I cannot have a baby." Cora felt a lump in her throat while saying that.
"Did you and Robert go to a doctor?"
"Not yet. But I am still not pregnant, and heaven knows, we try." She laughed bitterly. "Oh, we try enough."
Rosamund laughed. "It is one of the best things to do with the one you love is it not." She nudged her shoulder against Cora's.
"I do not mind the trying part." She smiled. "But I wished we had some results. When I see how Robert cheers up when seeing Peter, it hurts not being able to give him that."
"For now, he can enjoy cuddling with Peter, although it is getting harder. He does not want to be cuddled for too long. He is growing fast."
"He is now almost four months is he not?"
Rosamund smiled. "He is. Time does go by so fast. Speaking about time. How is your second book coming along?"
"It is at the editor right now. I have sent it a couple of days ago."
"That is great news. When can I read it?"
"As soon as I make the corrections that will probably be needed, you will get the first one."
"I cannot wait. As you know I loved your first book, and I cannot imagine anything else for this new one. What is this one about?"
"It is sort of a second part to the first one. The sisters develop a friendship and together they discover relationships. More I cannot tell you without giving the story away."
"That is good news, I was hoping for a sequel," Rosamund said enthusiastically. "Now let us get some work done. Where do you want to start?"
"The bathroom. It seems logical to start there."
"Right. I will open the boxes take everything out and you can decide where it needs to go."
Cora put her hand on Rosamund's arm. "Thank you."
"It is nothing. You are my friend and my sister, and I will do anything for you."
"Is everything alright between you and Cora?" Marmaduke asked when Robert handed him his glass.
Robert tried to play it off. "Why would we not be?"
"It was the feeling I got when we entered. Cora had a sad look on her face. If there is something I or Rosamund can do, please tell us."
"I hope Cora is talking with Rosamund at this moment. Between us everything is alright, but we had hoped to be expecting by this time."
"You just need to try harder." Marmaduke laughed, but suddenly stopped when he saw Robert's face.
"We do try enough; it just does not seem to happen for us. Cora is worried something is wrong and we cannot have children."
"Did you get tested?"
Robert felt awkward talking about this. He did not like talking about anything medical. "Not yet, Cora only voiced her concerns today."
"Well, I hope they can clear the air for you two and that Peter soon has a little cousin."
"Let us hope."
"Now, is there anything I can help you with? I bet Cora will unpack most things, but do you need some help with putting things up on the wall?"
"Enough of those jobs are to be done. Thank you for helping."
