Hey hey hey! So it took me a while but not as long as the other chapter right? I must say, I enjoyed writing this one and I wanted it to be perfect for you guys, so enjoy!
The weeks that followed flew by. Slowly but surely, more and more of Yelena's things made its way to Chris's home.
Chris kept his promise and made sure Bane and Duchess both were bathed when he was home, now only once or twice a week. Duchess was an angel. Obedient and reserved, where as Bane was becoming a bit of a pain in the ass now that he wasn't the only apple of her eye anymore and was particularly more defiant than his normal when it came to bath time. Yelena would never forget the sight of Chris soaking wet and covered in dog hair after wrestling Bane into the bath tub. You would think someone was trying to murder the large dog by the way he was wailing.
Eventually Chris gave up, working his way out of bathing the two dogs and started taking them to a professional groomer.
He did get her BMW waxed and detailed and begrudgingly gave up the keys to the Range Rover.
They fell into somewhat of an easy pattern. While he was away, she'd watch RAW and SmackDown, they would FaceTime pretty much every night after the show.
She hated that he was on the road more. The sense of loneliness was getting worse the bigger she got and it was like she was counting the seconds until he was home.
He knew how she felt, but she didn't want to seem clingy or needy. Asking him to ask for a lighter schedule was out of the question if she wanted him to have time off for when the twins were born, so she would just have to suck it up. Chris usually kept busy even when he wasn't on the road with The WWE. She knew that he and his band mates had an up and coming tour later in the summer through North America and he would be Going to Australia a few weeks shy of her due date, which had her in somewhat of a disgruntled state.
She knew he felt awful, after recently breaking the news to her and she knew she was being selfish for getting upset about it. This tour had been set in stone since late last year. It wasn't his fault that the timing of her pregnancy was clashing with his plans. He tried to reassure her, letting her know that some shows get cancelled at any given time and he would come home as much as he could
She would have to deal with that bridge when she got to it. In the meantime, the fact that the Shield guys were home for a few days made her feel better. They never hesitated to make the trip down to Tampa to come by and keep her company, which was just what she needed. They stopped by her place and picked up the cribs on their way to finally put together.
Chris had surprised her by clearing out an entire room to turn into a nursery for the babies and she was actually taken aback by the gesture. Of course her mind was reading too into it. Of course he would want a room for them, but she couldn't help but ponder on what it meant for them. That weekend had shifted something in their relationship and she willed herself to ignore the changes and let it be. Letting her mind wonder on what exactly they were doing was like scratching at old wounds and she didn't need the disappointment.
"No, hand me the socket wrench. No, the wrench Ambrose. Never mind, I'll get it." Roman said, rolling his grey eyes with a huff
Roman, being the skilled builder, was tackling the task of putting both cribs together by himself. He already had one down and was halfway done with the second
Rollins took up the easier rout and was putting the modern rocking chair she had purchased together.
Dean, as usual, was being nonproductive, eating a bag of grapes he had helped himself to from the fridge.
"Done." Seth said, admiring his handy work. He plopped in the chair to test it first before ushering her to sit down. He pulled the latched on the side and the built in foot rest popped out smoothly,
"Geez Doll Face, what's with your ankles?" Ambrose asked
"She's retaining water you ass." Roman politely informed
Dean made a face "I don't know how you're doing it."
"It's not as easy as it looks. Everything is swelling, I get heartburn after I eat the simplest things, and I swear one of these kids are trying to knock one of my ribs loose. I can't wait to give them their eviction notice." She huffed
"It'll be over before you know it." Roman assured her, finishing up on the crib
She heaved herself to her feet "Thank you guys so much for doing this for me. I seriously don't know what I'd do without you three."
Blame it on the hormones, but she truly was grateful. She had thought at a point in time that she could live without the chaos of the locker room. She had went a whole year with only one friend in the business and after finally opening up, realized that almost everyone she came in contact in the past year where genuinely good people. The fact that she thought she would so easily cut ties was ridiculous as downright shameful, looking at how they all welcomed her back in with open arms
"Now don't go getting mushy on us." Seth said, ruffling her hair
"I'm not, I swear." she lied, trying to discreetly wipe her eyes "Are you guys hungry?" she asked
"Starving." Roman said, putting his tools away
"Ever had Gnocchi?"
"No idea what that is, but you know I'll eat anything you cook." Dean said, throwing an arm around her shoulder
She whipped up a quick chicken and chorizo gnocchi for her guys and chatted with Roman while she cooked
Seth sat at the bar, smiling down at his phone every time it went off
"What's with the grin Rollins?" Yelena asked as she grated a block of Parmesan
"He must be texting his new girlfriend." Dean teased
"She not my girlfriend... yet anyway." Seth said, a goofy grin rearing
"Good for you Rollins. What's her name?" Yelena asked
"Leighla. She's great."
Dean patted him on the back proudly "Happy to finally see you've finally moved on dude."
"On from who?" Yelena asked, confused. Last time she checked, Seth was single, casually dating here and there, but every time she asked, none of the girls had made a serious impression on him.
Dean grinned
"Here we go." Roman muttered, fighting a smirk of his own
"What?" Yelena asked, confused. She looked in between the trio, who was only looking at Seth in amusement "Why do I get the feeling I'm missing something here?"
"Because you're horribly oblivious to all the men who would fall to their knees and profess their love for you at the snap of your fingers. Right Rollins?" Dean said
Roman snickered
Seth let out a sigh, blowing a strand of blonde hair out of his eyes "Thanks a lot Ambrose. Now this is awkward."
"Okay, I'm completely lost here."
"Rollins had a bit of a schoolboy crush on you." Roman finally put out there since no one else would explain
"It was not a schoolboy crush, thank you." Seth defended
"Yeah, because it was more like a painful to watch grown man pining." Dean corrected
Yelena raised a brow "Seriously?" she asked. Sure Rosa had pointed it out previously, but she never took it serious. Seth was a sweetheart and kind to everyone.
Seth's face was growing redder by the second "At the time, yes." Seth finally confessed, throwing his hands up "But I knew it wouldn't go anywhere once I found out you were with Randy at the time."
"That didn't stop him from flirting." said Dean
"And talking about you nonstop." Roman threw in
"Thanks assholes, I can take it from here." Seth said "But now we're best buds and I love you like a sister."
For the sake of stopping his embarrassment, she opted to not make a big deal about it "Awww I love you too. If I had to choose out of the two, of course it would have been you."
"Hey now!" Ambrose objected
Seth shot Dean a smug smile "Ha!"
Rosa glanced over at the disgruntled pregnant woman, pushing the shopping cart next to her "Are you seriously still upset about what the doctor said?"
"I don't want to do it." Yelena whined
"I don't think you have much of an option chica. It's for the babies. You want them to be healthy don't you?"
"Of course I want my babies to be healthy."
"It's not like you're not going to drop the weight back off afterwards. Thirty pounds isn't that big of a deal."
Having some mild pains, Yelena had requested a check up with Dr. Hawthorn. Upon informing her that the sharp pains she was feeling was normal, the OB/GYN had politely told her that she wasn't meeting her expected weight gain considering she was nearing her third trimester. She had gained another four pounds the last time she weighed herself, putting the grand total at twenty four, which she considered way more than enough. Dr. Hawthorn, however, was not impressed at the slightest and hell bent on getting her at least another fifteen pounds heavier by her next check up.
"I'm going to be an elephant." she groaned, grabbing a bag of potatoes
"And you'll have two beautiful babies in exchange for a bit of weight that will shed right off once you start breast feeding like Brie said."
Brie had somehow sold her on breast feeding instead of going with traditional formula. She had agreed after he Diva made her watch a few success stories on YouTube on how multiple women managed to lose majority of their baby weight. One woman lost twenty pounds in the first month postpartum, which she was immediately sold on, but after her checkup, insecurities were rearing their ugly heads. Every woman's body was different. What if she couldn't get the weight off? She'd seen many cases where women were stuck with their pregnancy weight years after giving birth and it was becoming somewhat of a fear. It was eating away at her mental, even somewhat overruling her hormonal body.
Somewhat. Not entirely.
"Stop thinking so much about it. You'll have your hands so full with the twins, you won't even have time to think about losing weight if it's not already dropping off on its own with the stress."
She picked up a bundle of asparagus, bagging it and throwing it in the buggy before pushing it forward
"What's next on the list?" Rosa said, taking it from her, she scanned it, her eyebrows drawing together "Lobster tails, New York Strip steak?" the Diva grinned "Oh, you're trying to get some tonight, aren't you?"
Yelena snatched the list from her "No, I'm not. Chris has been so helpful lately and I want to do something nice for him. He's been gone for two weeks, he deserves a nice dinner."
"And some cherry pie, don't forget that part." Rosa snorted
Rolling her eyes, Yelena pushed the cart towards the seafood section. The man behind the counter greeted them and asked what she needed
Rosa disappeared, turning back up while she was picking up herbs and seasonings
"These are on me." she said with a wink, dropping a bottle of KY jelly and two long white candles into the cart "I figured you don't need any condoms considering he already plugged you up."
Yelena couldn't help but laugh. What would she do without her best friend? "You're ringing that shit up separate. I don't want the cashier looking at me weird."
"You can thank me later."
...
Yelena drummed her fingers on the steering wheel impatiently, her green gazed fixed on the glass doors. After waiting at the airport for almost an hour, she was finally glad when a sea of people came flooding out from the plan that just landed from Wisconsin. She spotted Chris the second he stepped foot out the door and all but tore the driver side door off the car to get out
He spied her just as easily as she did.
She threw her arms around him
He buried his face in her hair, inhaling deeply. The world around them stood still in that moment and they held each other for what seemed like eternity before pulling back to look at her "Hi." he finally said
She grinned, a slight blush staining her cheeks "Hi."
Chris loaded his things into the car and slid behind the wheel and she got in on the passenger side, feeling like a giddy kid
Chris could almost sense her excitement "Why are you looking at me like that?"
She let out an easy laugh "I'm just glad you're home." she told him honestly
He caught her completely by surprise, leaning over the middle console to cup her face, touching his lips to hers
She put her hand over his, melting against him
He said nothing, shooting her a dazzling smile before starting the Range Rover, turning the vehicle homeward
She fidgeted on the passenger side the whole drive, growing more nervous the closer they got home, which didn't go unnoticed by Chris.
"You okay over there? Do you have to pee?" he asked, glancing at her when they stopped at a red light
She chuckled "No, I just... I'm okay."
Chris narrowed is eyes "Are you sure?"
She slipped her hand into his "Yeah. I'm fine."
He laced their fingers together, stroking the back of her hand with his thumb. She thought he had let the subject go and she tried to still herself, obviously failing
"What are you up to?" he asked when they were a little under four minutes away from his house
"Nothing, I promise." she said as he pulled into the driveway. She pressed the button to the garage and he pulled the SUV into the four car garage with ease next to his Jaguar and her BMW
She hopped out quickly "Go through the front door."
"What?" he asked, clearly confused
"Just do it." she insisted, going into the house, locking the garage door just in case. She slipped into the kitchen, checking on the food she left on warm on the stove before going down the hall, Chris had just gotten the front door open, setting his luggage next to the stairs
"You made dinner. Thank god, I could eat a horse." he said, starting towards he kitchen
She pressed her palms to his chest to halt him "You had a long flight. Why don't you go shower first and I'll meet you right here in twenty?"
A smirk formed on his lips "Join me?"
Oh the temptation. Leave it to him to get her riled back up to make up for his absence "Don't press your luck tonight Jericho."
He kissed the side of her head "Can't blame a man for trying." he muttered before grabbing his bags and heading up the stairs
While he showered, she set the table for two, deciding at the last minute to light the candles Rosa bought, hoping they didn't seem like too much to him. Returning to the kitchen to plate the food and grab the bottle of wine Nikki had so generously gave her for the night, she set everything up perfectly, feeling a sense of accomplishment.
She went to change into something a little more comfortable and met Chris just in time at the bottom of the stairs.
She said nothing, offering him a shy smile as she took his hand, leading the way into the dinning room.
"Wow."
She pulled out his chair for him at the head of the table as he sat
"This is nice. What's the occasion?" he asked
"No occasion. I just wanted to do something nice to show my appreciation for how helpful you've been lately." She said, massaging his shoulders lightly
He placed his hands on top of hers, wrapping her arms around his chest "You shouldn't have."
She placed a kiss on the side of his head "I wanted to."
After setting his plate before him and pouring him a glass of wine, they ate and talked about what was going on with the company.
She was pleased to see him go for seconds. She had opted to stay away from the red meat, nausea stirring the whole time she was preparing it and chose to stick with the salad.
"You truly outdid yourself Sweetheart." Chris said, sitting back in his chair, full and satisfied
Yelena collected the dirty dishes "I'm glad you liked it."
Chris took the plates from her, setting them down on the table before, pulling her down onto his lap "I've talked about my trip the entire time. How are you feeling? What have you been up to while I was away?"
She played with the soft blonde hairs at the nape of his neck lightly "I'm okay. I went to see Dr. Hawthorn today about a few pains I've been feeling lately."
Chris raised a brow in concern
"I'm fine. Everything is fine." she said, shushing before he could speak
"You're gonna work yourself into pre-mature labor if you don't relax."
"I'm fine Chris. It's not that big of a deal. Sure I have a lot more to do since I'm going to be gone for a while, but I'll be damned if I come back and my department is a shit show."
"What did the doctor say?"
"She recommend... taking my maternity leave early..."
"The doc has spoken."
"Chris-" she started to object
"If you're not going to listen to the doctor then I might have to have a conversation with Hunter about it."
She huffed, trying to stand, but he stilled her efforts
"Yelena, this is for your health. You're a workaholic if I've ever seen one and you need to rest. You can't put stress on yourself like that, it's bad for the twins."
"I know, I know." she said mildly "But there's still so much to do and my God if Sarah doesn't catch on in the next few days, I'm going to have to fire her. I can't have incompetence running my staff. I don't have much time left to get everything done. Four weeks will fly by."
"And you were given doctor's orders to take your leave early. Hunter is just gonna have to figure it out for himself what he's going to do in the two weeks he has."
Yelena narrowed her eyes "I'm sorry, I don't believe I heard you correctly. Did you just say two weeks?
Chris gave her a look, daring her to challenge him
She was in between a rock and a hard place. Even if she wanted to stay on until her leave started in four weeks, Chris was still going to tell Hunter to let her off the hook early.
"Three weeks." she bargained
"Two and a half." Chris offered "Take it or leave it."
She let out an angry groan "Fine."
He kissed her bare shoulder "Good girl."
She rolled her green eyes, getting up "Asshole."
"Only for you."
...
"Well this is a pleasant surprise Mendes."
"I only have a few minutes to talk before I board my flight."
He could see that she was in an airport, people passing by in a blur "I'm listening."
"Did Yelena tell you about her appointment she had?"
"Yeah, she told me Dr. Hawthorn told her to start her maternity leave as soon as possible. I've already spoken to Hunter about it."
Even though she agreed that she had two and a half weeks to get everything done, he didn't want to take any chances that she would be going to Full Sail behind his back while he was away
"Was that all she told you?" Rosa asked
"Yeah, why?"
Rosa rolled her eyes "Ugh she's so infuriated sometimes."
"Tell me about it."
"There's a little bit more to this that's not my place to discuss with you, but to make a long story short, the doctor said she's not gaining enough weight."
"What?"
"She's not eating enough or meeting the goal amount of weight at twenty six weeks."
He tried not to show his internal panic. Why hadn't she told him this? "She didn't tell me any of this at all. She told me everything was fine."
"I don't mean to scare you, but it's kind of not fine. I figured she wouldn't tell you which is why I called. Look at it this way: The doctor told her that the twins should be the size of a head of cabbage. Instead they're a little over tomato sized and tomato size is how big babies are at nineteen weeks."
Chris was silent, his mind racing in a trillion different directions.
"Like I said, there's more to it and it's not my place to tell you without her permission, but I wanted you to know about this because I'm worried about her."
Chris let out a sigh, palming his face "I'll take care of it."
They hung up and he tried to stifle his bubbling anger. If he flew off the handle at her, nine times out of ten, things would get ugly and that was the last thing he wanted. For once, all was right with the world between them and he didn't want to ruin it. Deciding to put it on the shelf until the right moment, he wandered throughout the house looking for her. After peeping into her bedroom and not finding her in bed, he checked the bathroom before heading downstairs. Hearing a weird sound, he finally found her in the garage
She sat with with her legs criss crossed on what looked like a tarp, empty cans of spray paint littering the floor around her, a mask covering her mouth and nose as she spray painted a odd shaped object.
"Woman, do you have any idea what time it is?"
She stopped painting, turning her attention to the doorway he was standing in and lowered the mask from her face "I kinda lost track of time."
"It's after one a.m. You should be sleeping."
"Not while these two are awake. I swear they're practicing their drop kicks on each other."
He let out a chuckle "What are you working on?"
She turned her project around and he could see now that it was a bookshelf in the shape of four tea cups stacked upside down on top of one another. She had already spray painted two of the insides of the shelves a pale yellow and green.
"I decided to go with the classical 'Alice in Wonderland' theme for the nursery."
"That's creative." He couldn't wait to see how it all turned out
"It was one of my favorites as a child."
"Why am I not surprised?"
She rolled her eyes "Val and I use to dress up and recreate the tea party scene all the time. I wish she were here to help me. I'd love to have her paint the walls."
He didn't miss the sorrow behind her words "She could, you know? If you just tell her what's going on. Along with the the rest of your family."
She only sighed "I'm just... not ready yet."
He leaned over and kissed the top of her head "I know." He helped her up "The rest of this can wait until tomorrow. It's time for bed."
She followed him inside without a fuss and he lead her up the stairs. She hesitated when he guided her past her bedroom door
"I already grabbed your pillow."
She looked almost nervous
"I won't try anything, I promise." he assured her
That seemed to encourage her to follow
They settled into bed and he slipped his arm under her pillow as she wrapped his arm around her, his hand resting on her belly. He turned the tv on and have her the remote. By the way the twins were kicking up a storm, he knew she wouldn't be falling asleep any time soon.
Satisfied when she pressed her back to his chest, his nose was filled with a scent he wasn't familiar with "You changed your shampoo again?"
"They didn't have the one I usually get in stock. You don't like it?"
He wrinkled his nose "You smell like a cheap air freshener."
"Gee, that's asshole." she laughed
"I liked the vanilla... kind of miss the strawberry scent honestly..." he said, yawning "I miss the brown."
"Oh great, you hate my hair too?"
"I never said I hated it. It's not your natural color is all."
"So you basically hate it?" she stated playfully
"You look beautiful either way, but I prefer you brunette... and drunk." he joked "My god, the things you do in bed when you're wasted." he groaned, reminiscing, tightening his hold on her, pressing his face into her neck
"No funny business Jericho." she reminded him "Being drunk got us into a lot of shit."
"Some of the best nights of my life." he rubbed the spot where the twins were kicking "I wouldn't change a thing or take it back for the world."
Their weekend together went by far too quickly. Before she knew it, it was Sunday night, their last night together before he had to catch his flight out to California. This would be the last few shows before the SummerSlam pay-per-view. With his run coming to an end, Chris would be doing a dark match on RAW and SmackDown, three house shows, and was going to stick around to watch the show on Sunday.
She woke up to kisses being pressed against her neck, letting out a soft hum of approval, she peeked an eye open, glancing at the clock. It was a little after three in the morning and she knew how flight wasn't taking off any time soon "Why are you awake so early?" she asked
"I want to ask you something." he said, brushing her hair away from her face
She turned over to face him, surprised to see him fully dressed. Odd. He leaned in to kiss her and she turned her face away "I have morning breath."
"Seriously?" he laughed
"Wait , I have to pee first." she said, slipping out of bed and into the bathroom. She relieved herself and brushed her teeth and gargled before sliding back under the warm sheets into his arms and let him kiss her
"You were saying?"
"Now I'm distracted, I don't know." he said around her lips
"Chris." she laughed "Focus."
"Fine he said, kissing the tip of her nose, his blue eyes roaming her face
"What is it?" she asked
He pulled her against his chest, tucking her head under his chin "If I asked you to pack your bags right now and come with me, would you do it without questioning it?"
Her green eyes widened "What?"
"I believe that's a question."
"Chris..." she said, lost for words, looking up at him. His face showed no signs of joking around "Seriously?"
"If you don't want to, you don't have to. I can't make you. The answer is simple: Yes or no?"
She stared at him in disbelief. This would mean she wouldn't be returning to work. Knowing Chris, had had already worked his magic with Hunter. Technically she wasn't suppose to start her leave until the second week in September, but that clearly wasn't going to happen now. She didn't want to start her leave now, but then again, this was Chris's last week with the company and finally they would have a little over a month to themselves before his Fozzy tour started. Maybe this was exactly what they both needed. An extra two weeks wouldn't hurt.
"Can I at least ask one question?"
"One." he agreed
"What about the dogs?"
"I already arranged for someone to come by while we're gone."
Of course. She couldn't help but laugh. He was serious about this.
His blue eyes searched her face, waiting.
She sighed "How long do I have to pack?"
"I believe that's another question." he said smartly
She got up, grabbing a pillow and whacking him lightly "Shut up before I change my mind."
And there you have it! Yelena is going back on the road. Up next! Yelena catches up with some old friends and jealousy rears its ugly head once again, but for whom? Thank you, as always for reading and leave me awesome reviews
