Jurassicfan: Oh, yeah, because the camp was taking place during Jurassic World, which was sometime around December (or they lived somewhere cold). Huh... I mean, it doesn't really affect the story exactly when this takes place. And I did jump a few months ahead before the camp. I'll just edit it when I get the chance.
Horvat: I did plan to have that done if Peter had his powers before coming to the island. But that was the original draft, so I changed it.
In the camp, each counselor had their own private room, as they preferred not to share dorms when the camp was constructed. Late at night, Richard found himself on the phone, seeking privacy for the conversation he didn't want others to overhear.
"Sir, I promise you, the Indominous has confirmed that DNA splicing is possible," Richard told the person on the other end. "All of my research is proving we can do the same with human DNA. We have done it." He pleaded with the man. "Human splicing is the only step left."
"Combining human DNA is the future of this company, Parker." He reminded Richard. "Splicing soldiers with the skills and strengths of other animals. Getting that will make us all millions. Including the life of..."
"I know, sir," Richard promised. "I know why this is so important to him. I will be able to get the information to one of your men by the end of the week."
"Why the end of the week?"
"Well, I need to keep this on the down low. I am working with this camp with my son," Richard explained. "I can't have them know of these experiments."
"You better make it quick, Parker."
Richard then hung up with a sigh as he heard alarms blaring and looked off to the distance to see they came from the Velociraptor pen. "What the hell?"
Kenji and Darius found themselves encircled by four menacing Velociraptors, the predators closing in on them with predatory intent. But just as the dinosaurs were poised to strike, the lights to the enclosure all turned on, blinding the Velociraptor pack, harming their senses, while all of a sudden chunks of succulent meat rained down into the enclosure from above. There, standing at the edge of the pen, was Roxie, her figure silhouetted against the light as she skillfully diverted the raptors' attention by luring them with enticing morsels.
"Come and get it!" Roxie called out. The velociraptors then ran over to the meat, leaving the kids alone. "Get them out!"
Dave then opened the padlock with the code and the doors closed, freeing them from the grasp of the dinosaurs. Then several park employees arrived and ran to try and make sure that the paddock was still secure. They couldn't risk them escaping.
"Dave, that was... thank you so much," Darius said in relief.
"Oh, that's standard procedure, Darius. I do that all the time." Dave informed him. "Excuse me." Dave then turned around and started to puke. "Just give me a second."
Roxie ran down in relief as she looked over Dave first, seeing he was bent over. "Are you hurt?" She then looked to everyone else as Peter and Brooklynn joined them. "Is everyone alright?" Kenji tried walking away when Roxie stopped him. "Whoa! Whoa! Where do you think you're going? You and Darius are in so much trouble."
"I- he- he was-" Darius tried to explain, but was interrupted by Roxie.
"Save it!" Roxie stated. "We'll decide what to do with you later." She promised them in anger. "If you even get to remain here after a stunt like this."
Everyone then started to head to the car while Peter leaned to Brooklynn. "She reminds me of my aunt when she is mad."
"Seriously?" Brooklynn asks.
"Hey, you should see her wrath," Peter stated as he headed for the car.
Returning to the camp, Richard was waiting to see what was happening when he got a radio call saying Roxie and Dave were bringing in the kids who snuck out. He had to admit, he didn't think Peter was one for breaking the rules. Yet again, he hasn't really known much about Peter in recent years. He really hasn't been the best father. He put his work ahead of his own son for so long, is there much time to be a part of his life anymore?
The elevator dinged and he watched Roxie and Dave send the kids to the other room for a moment. "So, what happened?" He asked them. "There's talk about the raptor pen. Did something happen?"
"Darius, Kenji, Brooklynn, and Peter snuck out," Roxie stated in anger. "Darius and Kenji were inside the Raptor pen."
"Seriously?" Richard asked in surprise. "Where were Brooklynn and Peter?"
"Up on the railing," Dave answered. "They were trying to get them out."
"Okay, so we have two kids in a dino pen, and we have two outside the pen," Richard commented. "Did they explain anything on the way over?"
"Uh, Roxie wasn't in the mood to ask questions or listen," Dave said cautiously.
Roxie gave him a sharp look. "What are you suggesting?"
"Well, Peter isn't a good liar," Richard commented. "Nor is he a troublemaker. I say we get his and Brooklynn's side. Question them and maybe warn them from sneaking out again."
"You sure that is a good idea?" Roxie asks.
"I'll stand by," Richard promised. "You two ask questions."
"Alright," Dave said as he walked off to get the two. He brought them to the common area, where the adults stood over them. "Okay, we are giving you both one chance to give an explanation, and it better be the truth."
"I couldn't sleep." Peter decided to just explain everything. "I was looking out over the balcony when Brooklynn approached. Seems she couldn't sleep or something."
"I was up for some water," Brooklynn explained. "I just happened to see him outside."
"We were talking when we saw Darius and Kenji sneaking off into the jungle." Peter continued to explain. "I figured the time that we woke you guys up, they would be lost in the jungle and gone who-knows-where, and for all we knew they snuck off to the main park for some restaurant food at the main park or something."
"The park is like half an hour away from here," Dave informed him. "By car."
"Hey, I didn't know." Peter shrugged. He tried to give a plausible explanation using the truth. "Brooklynn still has her phone, so I figured we would follow after them, and if something happened, or when we caught up to them, we could call for help to come get us."
"With who's number?" Roxie asked.
"I have my dad's number memorized," Peter explained, gesturing to Richard. "We were just looking out for them. We didn't think that they would do something like sneak off to the raptor pen."
"Though it sounds like they were looking for the Compy pen," Brooklynn admitted.
"By the time we got there, Brooklynn dropped her phone, Kenji went over the railing, and Darius jumped in when he saw the Velociraptors." Peter finished explaining. "Then you two know the rest..."
Roxie looked over and Richard nodded, seeing Peter was indeed telling the truth. "Alright. I suppose that you made the decision you thought was best. But this will be your only warning, don't go doing something like that again."
"Perfectly fair." Peter nodded.
"Definitely learned my lesson," Brooklynn stated.
"Alright, get to your bunks," Richard told the two of them. He then watched the two of them leave and sighed. "I did want him acting like a normal kid. This just isn't what I had in mind."
"Kids." Roxie sighed. "Especially when they are yours."
"Let's go and get the other side," Richard said as they walked off to speak to Kenji and Darius.
Peter and Brooklynn walked off towards the bunks. She looked back and towards Peter. "You gonna be okay?"
"Yeah, actually, that talk we had was pretty nice," Peter told her, squinting his eyes a little. "Oh, no." He sighed as he reached up and rubbed his eyes. "Yep. That's not good."
"What's wrong?" Brooklynn wonders.
"Ah, I think I lost my contacts out there," Peter explained.
"You have contacts?" Brooklynn was surprised to hear.
"Yeah, they are mostly for reading," Peter explained. "I can see fine if I squint." He then nodded towards the dorm. "Don't worry, I have my glasses with me. I'll survive camp with glasses."
"I doubt those glasses will." Brooklynn joked.
"Ha." Peter laughed sarcastically. "Yeah, let's see your phone survive." He dared as he tried to figure out how to hug someone. He never hugged someone outside of his family. "Uh... sorry, I don't know how to do this."
"Here," Brooklynn said as she pulled him for a hug. "There you go."
"Sorry," Peter said. "Like I said, don't do this often."
Brooklynn laughed as she walked back to bed. Peter chuckled as he leaned on the door. He had to say, making a friend was easier when nobody else knew who he was. A clean slate made things easier for making friends. He walked in and noticed Ben was still asleep.
Seems that Kenji and Darius didn't get the same warning as he and Brooklynn got. The next day they were heading to the genetics lab while Darius and Kenji were dropped off against a giant pile of dinosaur... poop.
"That is one big pile of poop," Peter commented, readjusting his glasses to plug his nose.
Roxie said as she handed Darius and Kenji shovels. "Enjoy cleaning this up, boys." She then walked back towards the car. "We're going to the genetics lab."
Ben retched from the smell as he headed back to the car. Brooklynn was using her camera to take photos as her shutter clicked.
Dave then tossed Darkus a canister of cologne. "Cologne. That'll help with the smell. And the ladies. What-what? But mostly the smell."
"The stench of dinosaur poo can really linger," Richard warned them as they got back into the car. "Try not to get any more trouble."
"What? But..." Darius was left with Kenji as he sighed and watched them drive away.
"Ugh. I'm still dropping followers?" Brooklynn asked as she looked at her phone. "'When are we gonna see cool stuff'? Chill, dude. I just got here."
"Heh, yeah, people online can be impatient," Peter replied as he sat beside her. "A reason why I don't get into that stuff. Also, I get camera shy."
"So, what's your next video?" Sammy asked as she moved so fast over to them, it caused Peter to squeal. "Ooh, maybe there's baby dino eggs in the lab. Everyone loves a baby video."
"Whatever it is, it'll be cool," Brooklynn promised.
Ben began humming as he squirted hand sanitizer all over his body, basically putting it on anything in the open. He then noticed Yaz looking at him and stopped.
"Sanitizer," Ben explained, pouring some on his legs. "Who knows what kind of creepy dino goo is at that lab? Gotta be ready for anything. The world is a grab-bag of gross, and we're all just along for the moist, sticky roller coaster ride called life."
Yaz looked down at the canister and up to Ben where she then quickly started to swirl some over her hand and rub it in. Peter watched and felt they were overreacting a little. But he wasn't gonna chance it.
"Hand it over," Peter asked of Yazmania.
Yazmania nodded as she tossed the container over.
Brooklynn then started recording. "What's good, Brooklanders? Today, I'm coming to you from one of Jurassic World's coolest remote genetics labs!"
They made it to the labs where they departed from the jeep and headed inside. They saw several dozens of screens, all showing different signatures of DNA. There was a whole wall of different mosquitoes trapped in amber that started all of the parks to begin with.
"It's so shiny in here!"
"This is a rare window into the park's inner workings," Roxie explained as they were looking around. "Not just anyone can come here, you know."
"Yep, this is where the magic happens," Dave stated.
Richard noticed their boss of the entire place was there and walked over. "Dr. Wu."
Wu stopped looking at a small herd of dinosaur eggs and turned to see Richard and the others. "Guess who's ready to have a blastocyst from the blastocyst? The mitosis with the mosisis! We're ready for some chromosomes, my bro-mosome. Wu, there it is! I can do more."
Richard sighed and rubbed his head. "Please don't, I am begging you. In fact, never do anything like that again."
"We're here for the tour, Dr. Wu," Roxie explained to Wu. "Camp Cretaceous? Ms. Dearing should have mentioned this."
"I'm sorry, but Mr. Masrani has accelerated the timetable for our newest exhibit yet again," Wu explained as he was still working. "I simply don't have time to spend the afternoon babysitting children."
"Masrani did what?" This was the first Richard heard of it.
"Yes, but we will be doing fine without you, Richard," Wu promised. "This is more of a job for everyone else. You've done all you can." Then he noticed Brooklynn was recording. "Young lady, no recording in the lab."
"Huh? But that's kind of my whole deal. You see, I have my own web channel-"
And that's germane because?
But Brooklynn wasn't one to give up easily as she sighed. "I'm sorry, Doctor. I just wanted my followers to meet the genius who brought dinosaurs back to life. I mean, without you, there is no Jurassic World. But, hey, if you wanna toil in the shadows while Masrani and John Hammond get all the credit, I respect that. It's about the work."
That got Wu's attention. "How many people watch this web show of yours?"
Peter was looking at some containers that held spiders and looked at Brooklynn. "Impressive."
"Eh, you pick up a thing or two." Brooklynn shrugged.
"What do spiders have to do with dinosaurs?" Yazmania wondered as she looked a the containers.
"Well, like we have today, Spiders have been around as long as Dino's have," Peter explained. "Dad did tell me they were experimenting on resurrecting some other extinct creatures. Sabertooths, wholly mammoths, stuff like that, using fossils. Spiders just seem to be the main thing they can do so far."
"Great. More of these creepy crawlies in our homes." Yazmania said sarcastically.
"Kinda wonder what makes them so unique," Peter said as he tried to read the labels. "Synspermiata."
Yazmania looked at him as if he had grown a new head. "You made that word up."
"I could be reading it wrong, it has been a minute since I wore glasses." Peter shrugged. "But, no, I read about this species in one of Dr. Richards' glimpses into the past. That's definitely a Synspermiata."
"Okay, if you say so, Spider-Man," Yazmania said jokingly as she walked off. "You seem to know your arachnids."
Peter tried to read the rest of the card, but the spider leaped at the glass, causing Peter to shriek. He then walked it off like nothing happened and walked around the labs.
Brooklynn was setting up the scene for Wu's interview. "Okay, Dr. Wu, you're on."
Wu cleared his throat before beginning. "Hello, I'm Dr. Henry Wu, PhD. Welcome to one of our satellite Jurassic World genetics labs." He then started to walk around while Brooklynn followed. "I like to say that creating a dinosaur takes TIME-T, technology; I, ingenuity; and M-E, me."
Sammy was looking at a small pile on the table, "Whoa! Eyeball! Ooh!"
Ben shudders when he hears that.
"Dr. Wu, what's that?" Sammy asked, looking at the screens.
"Tree frog DNA," Wu answered. "Unfortunately, I-"
Sammy gasped when she saw a table passing. "What's that?"
"Siberian mammoth remains extracted for-"
"Ooh! What's down that hall?" Sammy asked, looking at one side glass.
"My private office," Wu stated as he walked over. "It's restricted."
Dave was by the egg canisters and noticed one shaking. "You guys, look! Oh, I think one of these eggs is about to hatch."
"What?" Richard asked in confusion, knowing there were no scheduled egg hatchings.
"That's not possible," Wu said as he walked to the computers, seeing the egg was indeed hatching. "That ankylosaurus has only been incubating for ten weeks."
Yasmina gasped when the egg cracked. "Is that a tail?"
Indeed, it was a tail that struck the table, causing the egg's juices to splatter. Some of the liquid splashed onto Ben, prompting him to leap back in alarm, while Brooklynn snapped pictures.
The egg then cracked open, revealing that the head was still obscured by a large shell fragment. The ankylosaurus wobbled and almost toppled off the table, but Ben swiftly caught it at the last moment, steadying the dinosaur on the table. He then removed the shell fragment, unveiling the ankylosaurus to the world.
"Aw!" Peter had to admit she was pretty cute.
"Sweet!" Brooklynn said, taking a photo. "One of its head bumps is bigger than the other!"
"Asymmetry? In my lab?" Wu asked as he walked over to see the dinosaur.
Was that a dig at me?" Richard asked, looking at Dave. "That feels like a dig at me."
"Aw!"
"Wow."
"She's so tiny," Ben commented.
"But she won't stay tiny for long, right?" Roxie asked Wu.
"That's the idea," Wu said, Brooklynn slowly sneaking off. "All the dinosaurs go through an accelerated growth cycle." She then eyed his labs. "They're supposed to incubate for 13 weeks with no noticeable defects, but apparently this one slipped through."
Brooklynn made her way into Wu's office, looking around trying to sneak her way through. But as she was, she bumped into someone and was shocked to see Sammy.
"Oh! Hey!" Sammy said, looking suspiciously happy.
"Sammy!" Brooklynn wasn't counting on being caught but then wondered something. "Uh, what are you doing out here?"
"I was just..." Sammy seemed to be thinking of an answer. Then she just chuckles. "This place ought to come with a GPS. I really gotta go."
"I- I think there's a bathroom on the other end of the hall, actually." Brooklynn lied. "So..."
"Thanks! See you back there!" Sammy said, racing off.
Brooklynn walked towards a door that said restricted and tried to get in. But then she heard a door hissing and quickly hid.
"Doctor! We have those results you were looking for."
"Very well," Wu said as he entered the office.
Brooklynn sneaked in behind him, sneaking through and looking around. "Okay, Brooklanders, let's see if top-secret Jurassic World intel is cool enough for you."
She started to take photos as her camera shutter clicked. She looked around and saw another device similar to the one the baby hatched from. Then she saw a computer screen and saw it had worked on some sort of other dinosaur project.
"E750. Clinical trial results?" Then she noticed another file. "DNA splicing?"
Brooklynn looked over to the door and quickly clicked on the file, wondering what it was about. What she saw was strange as most of it seemed to be redacted. But what she could see was showing... work on mutations. There were notes about the work of Charles Xavier, and Dr. Hank McCoy, and a dozen other articles to do with mutations and the gene sequences that lead to mutations. Then she saw there were notes about a dozen different experiments but the files were empty.
"TASM-41? SM-19?" Brooklynn read them in confusion. "What are these numbers?" Then she found a file. "Classified! Jackpot!
But when she clicked on it, a lock screen appeared and an alarm started to go off. Brooklynn gasped and stood up, slowly backing away. Missing there was a spider in a canister behind her marked '42'. As she backed away, she bumped into the cage, causing it to fall and shatter. She froze as she looked and saw nothing, missing the spider in the darkness as it crawled up her shoe. That was when she saw a flash drive and picked it up.
"Hm." Brooklynn hummed when she spotted some papers. She looked them over and was getting curious. "Indominus rex?"
That was when the door opened and Wu wasn't surprised to see her as he was alerted.
"I thought the door said "restroom"?" Brooklynn said with a sheepish tone.
Ben was playing with the baby dinosaur while the counselors were watching.
"Well, that's it, Ben," Roxie commented, seeing Ben come out of his shell. "Looks like you live here now."
"Stay here and be a mother for a baby dino, what do you say?" Peter joked.
That was when Brooklynn was brought into the room being dragged by Wu. "Time for you all to leave." He demanded, shoving Brooklynn towards the group. "Clearly, this group has no respect for my lab."
"But what about Bumpy?" Ben wonders.
"Aw, Bumpy!" Dave said. "You gave it a name. That's precious!"
"The asset will soon be released into a herd of ankylosauruses," Wu said as he took the baby dinosaur back. "Then she'll be their problem, just like you all will cease to be my problem when you leave."
"All right, bup-bup-bup-bup-bup!" Dave said, gesturing to the doors. "Hit the road. We are not wanted here."
They headed for the doors while Peter walked over to Brooklynn. "So, I have a feeling getting caught wasn't exactly something you planned on?"
"Obviously not," Brooklynn stated as she missed the spider jump from her hoodie onto Peter.
"What did she see?" Richard asks Wu.
"She was trying to access my computer," Wu explained. "I have it protected, so I didn't think she saw anything essential."
Richard nodded and looked to the doorway. "Just make sure. I am trying to connect with my son... if he learned what we are working on..."
"You might have to make a choice, Richard," Wu warned Richard. "The work we are doing, or your son. If that comes, which one is more important?"
Richard thought that if he was ever asked that question he would be able to answer it easily. But nothing came to mind. He just quietly walked away and headed for the door to head back with everyone else.
By the time they returned to Kenji and Darius, they seemed to be out of breath. The poo all cleared up in the process.
"Hey, guys," Darius said.
"Why are you two so out of breath?" Richard was curious to know.
"Just doing the job we're told," Darius said as he walked off. "How was the field trip?"
"Oh, well, um, you know," Yazmania decided to recap events that occurred. "Ben fell in love with a dinosaur, and Super Star here got us booted from the lab."
"That is not what happen-" Brooklynn was trying to defend herself.
"How'd poop patrol go?" Peter asked.
"Uh..."
"Awesome!" Kenji stated. "You all should've seen how I owned-"
"This valuable experience!" Darius wasn't looking to get into more trouble. "Um, learned a lot about ourselves and, uh yep!
Roxie sniffed and could smell them, "Oh! Well, then, hit the showers. And maybe stay in there for a while?"
"Use soap," Ben said as they drove around. "Lots of soap!"
"Two near-death experiences in two days?" Darius asks. "We can't tell anyone about Toro or we're definitely getting sent home."
Kenji sighs. "I can't believe no one will know I saved your life."
"I'll know, Kenji," Darius promised.
"So, we even now, Darius?" Kenji asked.
"Yeah, we're even," Darius said as they walked off. "You do know farts didn't kill the dinosaurs, right?"
"Prove me wrong, yo."
"There is a lot of proof!" Darius stated.
"Okay, first I'm going to take a five-hour shower, and then tonight we're going over how the atmosphere works."
He did not keep that promise.
Peter was listening to Kenji talk about a Carnotaurus he named Torro while removing his jacket, and tossing it over to his bunk. Ben was listening and didn't seem to believe him either.
"Yeah, I doubt you outran a dinosaur." He stated as he sat down. "Darius I could see outsmarting it, you? Dino chow."
"Well, then explain how I am still standing," Kenji stated.
"If true? Dumb luck." Peter stated, missing the spider crawling off his back and onto his bunk.
"I still think it sounds a little too crazy," Ben agreed.
