A couple of days later, about a week or two, a whole lot of work, and a lot of Kenji complaining later, they had a functioning base. They had sleeping areas for one another, a functional eating table. And it turns out there was a lot of canned fruit at the medical area they went to.
Right now, Peter was focusing on the new creation that he got from his father's journal. He had mixed the chemicals right, hopefully, it took him about most of last night to get the mixture right. And even then, getting the mixture right was half of the battle. He still needed to create a device capable of safety shooting the strands of webbing from the container.
In a twist of fate, Yaz lost grip of the book amidst the chaos of a sudden stampede, scattering most of its pages beyond recovery. Yet, amidst the few surviving fragments, they pieced together ominous words: 'poisonous,' 'X-23,' 'deadly,' and 'sharp claws,' peppered with a slew of descriptive adjectives. These snippets, while unsettling, offered a glimpse of crucial information.
And he needed to be capable of doing it while using the scrap pile of technical equipment left over from when the Indominous trashed the place.
Darius was off studying dinosaurs that were near the camps, likely just Compies. Peter was then hearing commotion as he looked and saw Kenji scaring off the Compies.
Seems everyone was getting up as Yaz came down from the top bunk, her leg wrapped up in a bandage, allowing her to walk around on her own. Brooklynn moaned as she heard Yaz walking down.
"Five more minutes!"
And Sammy was struggling to open a can using a spoon. "Hey, Peter, you mind...?"
"One second, Sammy," Peter said, struggling to get it to work. "I am—" he tried to set off the web shooter, allowing it to shoot off. But the device ended up exploding in his face, causing Peter to shriek as he jumped back. "Gah!"
Brooklynn was the first one over when she saw Peter waving his hand around. "You okay?"
"Yeah, I'm fine," Peter groaned as he looked at his hand. "It at least was working. Halfway. I got it to shoot, but... not how I wanted it to." He then yanked the webbing off of his face. "But I'll get there. Eventually..."
"How much do these containers hold?" Brooklynn asks, picking up the device.
"One small fraction of this stuff can hold enough webbing to stretch across the whole park," Peter explained. "Dad was thorough about trying to keep these experiments down. If only he explained how to create the shooter."
"I highly doubt this was what he had in mind when he made the formula to be used for." Brooklynn joker.
Peter chuckled. "That we can agree on."
Then they heard the water jug get thrown and looked to see it landed by them. "No mas agua. A little help."
Peter rolled his eyes as he walked over and picked it up. "I've got it."
"If you keep doing that for him, he'll never learn to do it for himself," Yaz said.
"I'd rather do it than have a naked Kenji walking around," Peter stated as he took the slide downward towards the water. He then sighed when he walked over to the river and froze. "Uh... that might be a bit of a problem." What he was looking at was a completely empty river. "Guys?!"
Everyone walked over to the ledge and all were shocked when they saw the water was gone.
"Where'd the water go?" Sammy wonders.
"Why don't we ask Mr. 45-Minute shower?" Yaz asked, gesturing towards Kenji who approached, fully dressed.
"Hey, looking good is part of my brand." Kenji defended his time. "And no way I drained a whole river."
Brooklynn then heard something as she slid downward into the river and began to hear the humming she had heard earlier.
"We better figure out what's up." Darius tells them. "We're gonna run out of water Let's-"
"Shh!" Brooklynn asks them, trying to listen, "I hear that hum again.
Everyone groaned when they heard her mention it again.
"The river must've been drowning it out. If I follow that, I can find the-"
"Frozen patch of flowers." Everyone replied with a moan.
"Oh. I've mentioned it, huh?" Brooklynn asked with a blush.
"The frozen flowers you saw once but have never found again?" Kenji asks.
"Yeah. You mentioned it a few hundred times." Peter replied. "And last we skimmed through the book before it was stampeded..."
"My bad," Yaz replied.
"...My dad never created an ice-spitting dinosaur," Peter tells Brooklynn. "
"Uh, I'm sorry for wanting to get to the bottom of all this weirdness," Brooklynn explained. "I mean, especially with these experiments like that scorpion dude you guys mentioned, I figured you guys would want to find out more. I came to unbox-"
"Unbox Jurassic World, and that's what I'm gonna do." They all said in unison, getting Brooklynn a little annoyed.
"If you're gonna go look for the noise, I'll come too." Sammy offered. "If that's okay. It'd be nice to have an adventure for a fun reason and not a "fleeing dinosaurs or facing imminent death" reason."
"I better come with," Peter sighed as he picked up the backpack with his Spider-Man gear, including the web shooters. "In case you run into our scorpion friend."
"I'll go if Peter is!" Yaz said, a little too quickly for her own liking as she joined them. "And Sammy, and Brooklynn too."
"Great! You do that. Kenji and I will figure out why the river stopped." Darius said.
"Wait, what if we run into the scorpion guy?" Kenji asks in a panic.
"The book mentioned he likes to be in the thickness of the jungle." Peter eased Kenji's panic. "He'll likely be further inward than with the water."
"Really?" Yaz asks in a whisper.
"No, but I'd rather have him go with Darius," Peter explained. "I can pick up Kenji screaming a mile away, so if they run into him I'll likely hear it."
"You wanna keep up your shower habit, and also survive?" Darius asked Kenji. "Let's go unbox the mystery of the missing water.
Kenji sighs. "Fine, I'm in. It makes sense. I know this island like the-"
"The back of my VIP hand." Everyone said in unison.
Kenji didn't like how well they did that. "We have been spending way too much time together.
Then, they divided into groups. Darius and Kenji set off to investigate the water situation and discover what had occurred. Meanwhile, Brooklynn, Peter, Sammy, and Yaz ventured out to track down the source of the humming sound. Peter took the lead, his heightened senses alert to the presence of nearby dinosaurs and other anomalies.
Brooklynn was walking a little behind him while Yas and Sammy were talking. Ever since the talk back at the docks, they've actually started to recoil as friends again. It was nice seeing them get along again after the whole lying incident. Peter knew that they would be good friends. Even if he didn't see the whole 'sent-here-to-spy' thing Sammy confessed to.
"Favorite place?"
"High school."
"Your favorite place in the world is high school?"
"Yeah! There's lockers, dances, passing notes in class, getting detention for passing notes in class."
"No! School is where you do boring stuff before comin' back and doing it all over again. I may like square pizza in the cafeteria."
"Oh, please! Your favorite is orange, orange, and orange."
"Oh, wow! Yeah..." Brooklynn said a little shy. "Pizza is orange. So funny, right?"
"Oh no. It was kinda something Yaz said before." Sammy explained.
"Oh. Cool. Yeah, cool." Brooklynn muttered, walking ahead to reach Peter. "So... how's it going up here?"
"Asking me as a friend or as your bodyguard?" Peter asked her as a joke.
"Ooh, I've got a bodyguard?" Brooklynn asked as a joke. "I didn't know I became so popular that I needed one so soon."
Peter rolled his eyes, seeing how she interpreted what he said. "Ha-ha, Brook." He said as he smacked a bush out of the way. "Sounds like bonding with the others wasn't going so well."
"How did you-" Brooklynn was asking when she remembered. "Oh, right, enhanced hearing."
"It's a blessing and a curse," Peter stated with a sigh. "Kenji mumbles in his sleep. Had to have Darius swap with me."
"Seriously?" Brooklynn asked with a groan. "I'd have pushed him off if I had to hear that. But yeah, it isn't going so well. They just started going on about high school and..."
"You've never been to a high school, have you?" Peter took a guess.
"No. A hundred percent online tutors." Brooklynn admitted. "But I dropped a scone in front of the queen while making my "Unboxing Buckingham Palace" video!"
"That..." Peter wasn't sure where to take that one. "Um, okay." He then pushed ahead and stepped on something causing a crunch. "That was not a twig." Looking down at his feet, they noticed there were frozen flowers. "Frozen flowers..."
"I think this is the place," Brooklynn said just as the faint humming returned.
"The hum!" Sammy cried
"I hear it," Yaz said
"I told you guys!" Brooklynn cheered.
"It's super cold air," Peter commented, moving the plants out of the way and finding an air vent. "An air vent?" He then looked around in confusion. "But all of the power in the park is down... so what's powering a cooling system?"
"This place keeps getting weirder and weirder," Yaz commented.
Sammy gasps. "Yaz, Yaz, Yaz!"
"This is like that episode where Esther follows that graffiti trail," Sammy said, getting Brooklynn and Peter to be confused. "Sorry, Yaz and I were talking about this show we love-"
"Esther Stone: High School P.I. Episode 23, she exposed a cryptocurrency ring." Brooklynn proclaimed. "I've seen every episode 80 times!"
"That explains a few things," Peter muttered to himself.
"No way! You guys watch Esther Stone?" Sammy asked.
"Huh. Famous people are just like us." Yaz said sarcastically.
"A K-pop group turned me onto it, " Brooklynn explained. "I was touring with them."
"Ish." Yaz corrected herself. "Like us-ish."
"My aunt and I were looking for a show to binge together," Peter shrugged.
"Then what are we waiting for?" Sammy asked as she grabbed them all. "It's time to investigate..."
"A Stone-cold mystery!" The girls said together, leaving Peter a little confused.
"Spread out," Brooklynn said as they scattered. "See if you can feel more vibrations."
Peter just shrugged and accepted what happened. "Okay... that happened."
The four of them began to look around while Peter leaped into the air, seeing if he could maybe spot any more patches from a distance. But it was Yaz who found them something as she took a few steps away from the area and heard something.
"Hey! I hear something." Yaz said, getting everyone to head to her location.
"Follow that hum!" Sammy cried as they raced off.
"The vibrations are stronger," Brooklynn commented.
"We're on the right track." Sammy cheered as they raced ahead. "This way!"
Peter rolled his eyes a little and chased after them, not using his full speed and letting them take the lead.
"Remember when Esther figured out the superintendent's phone vibrating was actually Morse code?" Brooklynn asked.
"And that killer chase scene in the abandoned warehouse?" Yaz continued.
"But still made it to prom in that amazing dress? So good!" Sammy cheered.
"I love that episode when she finds the...genetics lab?" Brooklynn stopped.
"But that was in season two." Sammy stated as she took a breath. "We don't talk about season two."
"Not that lab," Peter stated, pointing ahead. "That lab."
They looked ahead and saw there was indeed a genetics lab just up ahead of them. The same one that they ran into Eddie and... where Richard sacrificed himself.
Peter used his strength and yanked open the doors to look inside the labs. He took a look around and spotted a few canisters in the dark, but everything looked safe.
"It's clear," Peter said as he allowed them to enter.
"Indominus rex, the hum, Mantah Corp?" Brooklynn asked as she looked around.
"Mantah Corp?" Peter asks
"Yeah. It all connects here." Brooklynn said as she looked around. "Dr. Wu was up to something big, something secret. Add that onto these cross-species experiments, there has to be some sort of third party."
Yaz flicks a light switch but nothing happens. "No power."
"Odd," Peter said as he looked in a drawer that had a container inside. Inside the container was some strange substance that looked almost like oil. "Huh. Weird lava lamp." He then tossed the canister aside, the glass cracking when it hit the floor. "Wonder what else they had here."
"Who- who do you think took everything?" Sammy wonders.
"Something's gotta be here," Brooklynn said as she went down to the other labs.
Peter was looking, then he eyed a picture frame on the desk and picked it up. He gasped when he noticed the photo frame was of him and his mom and dad. This must have been his father's lab.
While he was distracted, his senses missed a dinosaur running past and making its way towsrds the lab that Brooklynn and the others went into.
Yaz, Brooklynn, and Sammy entered the main room where the birthday cake was now stale from being left out. Sammy walked over to a fragment of the wall and noticed there were slashes that looked like claw marks. But there were no dinosaurs with only two claws...
Brooklynn was walking around when she stepped on a picture frame and looked down to see Eddie and Dr. Wu. But oddly enough, Wu's fade was scratched out. Almost like someone took a knife and drew it across the photo.
"That birthday guy! Of course!" Brooklynn said.
"Who?" Yaz asked, keeping her eyes out for whatever made those marks.
"The van-stealing birthday weirdo, remember?" Brooklynn tried to help her remember. "He mentioned something about the "other guys." And no one knew what was really going on here." She then started to look around, trying to find anything. "Could he have been working for Mantah Corp?" She looked across all of the papers on the desk to find something. "Again! Nothing!"
"Brooklynn," Yaz called out. "What did you expect to find?"
"I don't know." Brooklynn curled up. "Something big. Something important. I came here to unbox Jurass..." she realized how much she had been repeating herself. "You know."
That was when they heard screeching, causing them to jump and look to the doorway. Yaz and Sammy ran to hide just as two Baryonyxs entered the halls. They roamed and one peaked her head inside and looked around.
Sammy peered her head up and noticed them. "It's Chaos!" She said, noticing their confusion. "I named the Baryonyxes "Chaos," "Grim," and "Limbo"."
"After the hacker gang in episode 68?" Brooklynn asks.
Chaos gurgles, getting them to quiet up and wonder where Peter is. The Baryonyx approached the table they were hiding under and sniffed the air. The three of them were worried when suddenly something was thrown, getting Chaos to look back and see Peter in his Spider-Man attire.
"Get away from them!" Peter cried, getting Chaos to screech at him.
Peter threw one of the canisters of web fluid that was mostly emptied during the explosion this morning. When the Baryonyx bit the capsule, it exploded, cogging the mouth and causing the Baryonyx to charge at Peter, slamming him into the wall.
"Go!" Peter cried out to them. "Get out of here!"
The three girls decided to comply and they began to sneak off. As they did, Brooklynn noticed something underneath the photo frame and quickly found an odd envelope. She picked it up and crawled away while Peter continued to try and distract the Baryonyx.
Brooklynn snuck off and took a second to look over the envelope and saw a number on the other end. "E750? I know that number." She said, rushing over towards Sammy and Yaz. "It was on Wu's computer."
"Shh," Yaz said, watching Peter fight off Chaos.
"You... are one... strong... dino!" Peter cried, grabbing the Baryonyx by the legs and tossing him into the wall. That was when he saw a giant chamber with glass everywhere and a word: X-23. "Oh, god..."
The Baryonyx got back up while Peter was distracted by the chamber and whacked him with her tail. He was sent flying and smacked into the wall just as the girls were about to escape.
"Peter!" The girls cried.
Chaos snarled at them, getting them to panic as they ran to try and escape the labs. The place luckily went in a circle, so all they needed to do was run around the pillar in the middle and then manage to grab Peter on the way.
Peter groaned when Yaz and Brooklynn stopped for a moment to grab him by the arms. He stumbled a few steps as he tried to find his footing while they ran for their lives.
"Quick! Outside!" Yaz cried as they ran down the halls.
"On the plus side, we've got an hour before he can even try to eat us!" Peter cried as he ran with them.
"And the bad news?" Brooklynn wonders.
"He doesn't need teeth to trample us!" Peter cried.
As they were running, the Baryonyx ended up stepping on the canister filled with the black ooze that Peter believed to be a lava lamp. The ooze crawled its way out of the canister and made its way towards something specifically...
The four of them ran off in panic as they escaped Chaos. But as they were running, another Baryonyx came out of the jungle and caused them to stop in their tracks.
"Grim!" Sammy cried out.
Peter hadn't heard the names before and was confused. "Did you name them?"
"Not the time!" Yaz cried.
Peter got into a stance and prepared to fight off the dinosaur when a roar was heard in the distance. Grim then seemed to ignore them and ran for the roar. Peter then pushed them ahead, not questioning what was happening, and ran as fast as they could.
After they ran for a distance, they all stopped for a moment and broke into laughter. Peter sighed as he leaned onto a tree with a laugh. But then they noticed Brooklynn wasn't laughing.
"What's wrong?" Yaz wonders.
"It's just..." Brooklynn sighs. "I was so close to finding something. But I dropped the envelope."
"You mean this?" Sammy asked, showing off the envelope.
"Sammy! You grabbed it?" Brooklynn asked as she looked over the envelope.
"Of course!" Sammy said.
"All right." Brooklynn then took out the envelope and saw it was full of tags. "A bunch of numbers, and letters... And this thing." She saw it was an empty ID tag. "No answers. Just more questions. Maybe we should check-" The roaring of the Baryonyx stopped her from continuing. "Or we should go."
Sammy nodded. "Let's not push our luck."
Peter was on the verge of moving forward when a glimmer of light captured his attention. He instinctively glanced to the side and spotted a faint shimmer that seemed out of place. Whirling around, he was startled to see a shadowy figure partially obscured in a cascade of ebony hair, the contours of its face just visible in the glint of the light. However, before he could truly make sense of what he was witnessing, the apparition abruptly vanished as if it had been nothing more than a fleeting shadow. Intrigued yet cautious, Peter stepped closer to the spot where the figure had been, scanning the surroundings with heightened senses, but he found nothing—just an empty expanse where the mysterious presence had disappeared.
"Hey," Brooklynn called out, getting Peter to look her way. "You okay?"
"Yeah..." Peter sighed as he looked back. "I just... felt like I saw a ghost."
"A ghost?" Brooklynn asks as she approaches him. "Your dad?"
"No." Peter said in confusion. "Oddly enough... it looked like my mother."
"Your mother?" Brooklynn was confused to hear that. "You don't think...?"
"No, he didn't perfect cloning her." Peter knew Brooklynn thought Richard might have cloned Mary before his death. "No... and besides, she looked too young. Almost like pictures I saw of her when she was a kid. Couldn't be her."
As Peter and Brooklynn strolled away, their laughter echoing in the air, a shadowy figure lurked in the underbrush, her eyes narrowing at the sight of Peter. A barely audible snarl escaped her lips, a mix of anger and intrigue. She tightened her fist, and with a sharp, metallic hiss, two gleaming blades sprang forth, their edges shimmering ominously in the faint light. The air around her seemed to thrum with tension as she prepared to leap from her hiding spot, yet at the last moment, she chose to remain concealed, the thrill of the hunt pulsing through her veins.
Returning to camp, they found that the water was flowing once again. "Looks like someone solved the water sitch," Brooklynn said as she climbed up.
"You're welcome. All me." Kenji stated.
"Doubt," Peter replied.
"Yeah! All right!"
"H2O, baby!"
"And we found this!" Brooklynn said, showing the ID card.
"Was that something you were looking for?" Dadius asks.
"Kinda." Brooklynn shrugged.
"And it turns out that my web fluid keeps dinos from turning us into chow," Peter proclaimed.
"Okay, awesome!" Darius said.
"Yeah, that thing." Kenji shrugged.
"Have fun, whatever you're using that for.
"You know, if Esther Stone was here, she'd say-" Sammy was saying when Kenji jumped in.
"Life is hard, so any day that goes somewhat right deserves to be celebrated with a party." Kenji finished, getting them all shocked. "What? It's a great show, okay? The relationship between Esther and her dad is really compelling."
"Uh, okay well, in the spirit of Esther Stone, let's..."
"Party!" Everyone cheered as they took cups and clinked them together.
"And ch-ch-ch-check it out!" Kenji said, showing some sort of recording.
"Oh, yeah! Feel the beat that I made. Are you ready, ready, ready? Dave Special! Music, music, music Music, music, music
"Nope. I'm out." Yaz said as she walked off.
"Kenji, what is this?"
"Dave's demos."
"Found it in what was left of his bunk and was waiting for the perfect time to show you," Kenji stated. "Hold up. Here's the best part!
"Dave, Dave, Da-Da-Da-Dave," Roxie said. "Get that thing out of my face." What are you even doing?"
"Makin' music, makin' music. Making music, making art Order number one, order number two..."
Yaz walked over to Peter and saw he was trying to wipe the mud off the book without ruining the writing. "What are you doing?"
"Trying to find out more about this X-23 experiment," Peter said as he showed the page that even had a sketch of the experiment that was trampled. "But I'm failing."
"Can you make out anything?" Yaz wonders.
"Only the terrible things," Peter stated. "Like 'deadly', 'indestructible', and I believe it said something about... fire?"
"What?" Yaz asks. "This experiment can breathe fire?"
"No, look," Peter said, gesturing out into the jungle. "Fire."
"Guys?" Yaz called getting everyone to look out and see the fire in the distance.
"What is that?" Sammy asks.
"A fire." Brooklynn notices.
"A campfire!" Kenji gasped.
"Guys... we're not alone," Darius said with shock.
