Disclaimer: I own none of the existing characters of the 2002 Birds of Prey television series or any of the other DC Comics characters that show up in this story.
However, after watching the series, I thought that, while it did have potential, there were things that could have been better. Which is why I made some "tweaks" to the characters and storyline and included other major characters, including the ones that are famous in the Batman mythos. Especially a special someone.
For example, I will be combining the elements of the short-lived Birds of Prey show with elements of Earth 2, New Earth, Prime Earth, and maybe a few (or more) alternate continuities in the DC Universe (if I can fit them into any of the chapters).
Hope you guys enjoy it!
Alfred Pennyworth Voiceover: In the year 1964, Bruce Wayne, haunted by the senseless murders of his parents, took up an identity to fight crime in the city of Gotham: The Batman. As time went on, Gotham's Dark Knight made a list of friends and allies, one of which was his own biological son named Damian Wayne, born in a love affair between him and the oldest daughter of an immortal terrorist that he had trained under. But the increase in allies unfortunately meant that there was also an increase in the amount of enemies. However, one of his so-called "villains" captured his heart, a woman named Selina Kyle, a.k.a. Catwoman. As their love grew, it led to the most important miracle in their life together: their daughter, Helena Wayne. For a while, Batman continued to fight for the city, even after the city was destroyed and rebuilt. Unfortunately, Master Bruce suffered another tragedy as Miss Selena was gunned down before she had a chance to react. As time went on, it was clear that not only did time (and his numerous injuries) catch up to him, but his heart wasn't in it anymore. But just because Batman retired, it didn't mean Bruce Wayne stopped fighting for the city. Now, after hanging up the cape and cowl, Bruce Wayne became New Gotham's Police Commissioner, but that didn't mean the city was left without superheroes, as his children and allies have taken up the legacy of the Bat.
Chapter 1: The Huntress Strikes
Amusement Mile
October, 2002
In the middle of the night, and in an old warehouse in one of the not-so-nice parts of New Gotham, members of New Gotham's most notorious gang, the Mutants, were coming together in order to make a deal so that they can both discuss how to distribute their "products" under the radar.
The first to speak up was the leader of the Mutants, "Alright, listen up! Like I promised, I managed to get the low-level gangs in the area to help us sell our stuff to anyone who can buy 'em. With a little help from them, we'll be getting new passageways and even more discreet drop-off zones in case we need to make those kinds of deliveries."
To say that his subordinates were happy was an understatement. These punks were ecstatic.
But then, the Mutant Leader rose his hand up as a signal for them to be silent. Considering his reputation against those who didn't follow orders, needless to say, they shut their mouths.
"But make no mistake, if our new "assistants" cross us and you catch them in the act, well, I don't need to tell you what you gotta do so that it never happens again, do I?
Understanding completely, each and every member gave a laugh of agreement. The thing about the Mutants was that they didn't need a reason to beat the crap out of someone, they needed a reason not to. Of course, even then, it would take an act of God to get people like them to listen.
However, as things were starting to look up for them, suddenly, the light bulbs were shattered by a high-projectile object. As the warehouse went dark, every Mutant member, drew out their weapons, ready to kill whoever dared to step on their turf and mess with them. Or so they thought. But nothing could have prepared them for what happened next.
"AAAAHHHHH!!!" zone of the Mutants shouted. By the time 2 of his "coworkers" found him, his hands were stuck together with one arrow going into the left one and out of the right one, and his kneecaps also had one arrow each sticking out of them.
Next thing they knew, both of them got the same treatment (minus the arrows through their hands). After that, the arrows started firing all over the place. By the time only 5 minutes had past, most of the gang members were down on the floor. For a moment there was nothing but the sound of them whimpering on the floor and the 3 remaining Mutants, including the leader, breathing heavily as they looked all over the place, trying to find their hidden assailant.
"YOU THINK YOU SCARE ME?!!" the Mutant Leader shouted, attempting to convince himself rather than whoever is attacking them. "THERE'S A REASON WHY I'M THE LEADER HERE!!"
"Who are you kidding?" the mystery assailant, who clearly had a woman's voice, asked in an uninterested manner. "Even your own men know you're scared. And you should be. Because after everything you've done, I'm gonna make sure you feel this for the rest of your miserable, pathetic life."
Just then, his 2 remaining men went down as they each got an arrow to their spines. "Looks like they won't be walking anytime soon. None of them will, as a matter of fact." said the woman, mocking him and his gang.
If the Mutant Leader wasn't scared before, which is doubtful, he was definitely scared now. He proved as much as he said "fuck this" and ran out of the warehouse. But as he ran, he could hear someone following him, and he knew who it was. So, while he kept running, he started to fire his gun, hoping that by some miracle, he managed to hit her with one. But that miracle never came, and he found out the hard way when an arrow landed straight into the barrel of his gun. As he attempted to take a closer look at it, the arrow did something unexpected: it exploded. Suddenly, his right hand and parts of his face were in extreme pain.
"AAAHHH!!!" he screamed. But then, not wanting to give away how freaked out he was, he challenged her. "IS THAT ALL YOU CAN DO?! JUST FIRE AWAY FROM A SAFE DISTANCE?! I GUESS I SHOULDN'T BE SURPRISED! DEEP DOWN, YOU'RE PROBABLY JUST A SCARED LITTLE GIRL!"
Accepting his challenge, the mysterious attacker came out of the shadows and stood right in front of him. It was a young woman, one with a good, athletic figure, dark brown hair, and most importantly, she was wearing a suit that was unmistakably used for vigilante work. Her domino mask was purple, as was her cape. Although her bodysuit was mostly purple, parts of it did have a few black layers.
"A scared little girl, huh?" she asked, obviously mocking him. "Well then, how about I kick your ass like a woman? Then you'll see what I'm really made of." Then she got into fighting position and smirked, "Not that I have anything to prove to someone like you."
As the brute charged at her, she leaped and front flipped right over him. Then, as he turned around after punching nothing but air, she kicked him square in the jaw, knocking him down on his back. But because he refused to be beaten by a girl, he jumped back up and took out his large emergency blade.
This caused the vigilante to snort, "Somebody's overcompensating." It doesn't take a genius to know that this made him angry, to say the least. The Mutant Leader ran forward and lunged his blade at this purple-clad interloper. But the young woman just kept dodging until she had enough of this. So once he made a bad step, she managed to grab his hand and then proceeded to break his arm. Then she pushed him into a wall, which she used to hit his head against over and over again until he looked like he was having trouble staying conscious. Seeing this, she took the chance to knock him out with one final punch. Then she grabbed his arms and cuffed him up to the strongest pipe around.
"Not so tough when you're fighting someone stronger than you, huh?" she sarcastically asked, even though she knew he wasn't in any position to hear anything at the moment. Then she pressed an earpiece in her left ear and said, "Oracle, I'm done here. Make sure the GCPD gets an anonymous tip about a bunch Mutant gang members bleeding out in a warehouse in Amusement Mile. Don't forget to tell them that their leader is already cuffed by the building behind it."
"Well done, Huntress. And as for the cops, I'm way ahead of you on that one. Speaking of which, they're actually close by, so you might wanna split if you don't want to answer any questions." Oracle (who clearly had a woman's voice) said.
As if on cue, the police sirens were getting nearer and nearer. So, Huntress did what any normal crime-fighting vigilante would do. She took out her grapple gun, fired at the nearest building, and took off.
Once the cops pulled up, 10 of them went into the building, only to find the Mutants already taken care of, with arrows sticking out of them. As for the 3 other cops outside, using the additional information that was sent to them on their way there, they went straight to the location of the Mutant Leader, cuffed and still unconscious.
Once the cops had taken the Mutant Leader and the rest of the gang in, the news of the takedown was reported to the public. And the one doing the reporting was a young woman with blonde hair in a coat and just a few years older than the hero who took them down. As she stood right in front of the warehouse, her cameraman gave her the signal to start.
"This is Veronica Vale-Ryder, reporting live on GBC. I am standing here in Amusement Mile in front of a warehouse where members of the notorious Mutant Gang were gathered together, most likely discussing "business" and what to do next based on the amount of drugs and weapons lying around in there. Not only were the members taken down earlier, but on the side of the building behind this warehouse was the as of yet unnamed Mutant Leader, who, based on his injuries, was taken down hard. Despite the GCPD bringing the Mutants in, according to eye witnesses, it was actually ONE PERSON, ONE WOMAN who quite LITERALLY brought them to their knees: the Huntress. For those of you who don't know about New Gotham's Daring Damsel, the Huntress has been the city's vigilante who has pretty much continued Batman's war on crime after his disappearance. The Huntress is still fairly new on the scene as she has only been doing this for the last couple of years now. While she may seemingly and currently be the only one continuing the superhero business in New Gotham, in this city, you never really know for sure. More on this as the story goes on."
Oracle's Watchtower
As the news was finished for the time being, a beautiful red-headed woman in a wheelchair turned off the monitor screen and went back to working on her spinal harness, having spent almost a year trying to perfect it so that it can get her walking again. Just then, an old gentleman walked in with a tray of chicken salad sandwiches.
"Ah, Miss Barbara. I figured you and, not to mention, a certain someone, would like something to eat. While it is a step down from my usual meals, I thought for tonight you could use something simple." he said with English accent and a cheeky smile.
"Thanks Alfred." Barbara said. "Did you see the news?"
"Indeed I did. I suppose even the Mutant Gang is no match for our dear Huntress."
"Yeah, no kidding. How do you think she's doing?"
"Splendid, as a matter of fact. It is nice to see that Ms. Vale-Ryder has taken more after her dear mother rather than that father of hers." Alfred commented with subtle humor in his voice. This caused Barbara to give him a knowing look with a little smile. "Yes, I know who you're talking about. And I will admit, she has done rather well for herself. Though I will also admit that I have been pretty worried about her once she decided to go out in costume again. Still am, actually. Especially after what happened to Miss Selina."
Barbara frowned and nodded her head, "Yeah, you're not the only one."
And in that moment, the elevator doors opened up to reveal the lady of the hour, herself.
"Ah, speak of the devil." Alfred said. "Welcome back, Miss Helena."
"Good to be back, Al." Helena said, appreciative of the welcoming old man. Then she walked up to Barbara, "Sorry I'm late, but the motorcycle's still under repair and not all of us have a Batmobile lying around."
Barbara and Alfred smiled in agreement.
"So, isn't this great. With most of the Mutants and even their "esteemed leader" behind bars, all the scattering members should join them in no time." Helena proudly stated.
"Don't get to carried away kid." Barbara gently warned. "You did great out there. But now we just have to make sure the charges stick."
Helena was confused by that, "How could the charges NOT stick? With all the evidence the police have, what makes you think they'd get off lightly?"
"In this city, whether it is Old Gotham or New Gotham, you would be surprised... until the day comes when you're not." Alfred answered solemnly.
Helena understood quickly, "I mean, I get how things were when the Falcones and the Maronis were around, but we're not talking about mob families, here. Hell, these guys weren't as organized as they thought they were, even if they did get help from other gangs in that area."
"Be that as it may, we still can't afford to get ahead of ourselves." Barbara stated. "No matter what, this is still Gotham. Like Alfred said, Old or New, there's always one surprise after another just waiting in the corner. So we need to prepare for anything."
On that, the three of them came to an agreement.
GCPD
The very next day...
All of the police officers were going about their usual day. Of course, there was the fact that they got a big break last night when the Mutants were taken down by the female vigilante roaming around. But these days, they had ways of handling anybody the local superheroes brought. And it was all thanks to one man who had fought crime in a different way back in his prime. Not that any of his officers knew about that part of his life.
And right on schedule, here he came. The front doors opened up and in walked... Commissioner Bruce Wayne.
As soon as they saw him, the cops gave him a salute of respect. Despite his years as the Dark Knight, even he couldn't help but smile at this.
"Alright, as you were, everyone." he said with his rare sense of lightheartedness. "Get back to work. If you need me, you know where to find me."
But just as he made it to the stairs, "Excuse me, Commissioner Wayne?" said a voice in the department that Bruce had never heard before. As he turned around, he was met by a young African-American man in a professional attire comprised of blue buttoned shirt, a tie, and a black suit jacket.
"Yes, how may I help you, Mister...?" Bruce asked while simultaneously trying to get the man to introduce himself.
"Detective, actually. Detective Jesse Reese."
And that's when it clicked, "Right, of course. You're the new transfer from Keystone, correct?"
Jesse smiled politely and answered, "Yes sir. I just got in last night. So, needless to say I missed all the action in Amusement Mile."
Bruce gave him a small laugh in response, "I'm afraid you and I have different definitions of the word "action" Detective Reese, considering that we didn't get any. In case you missed the news, Batman's replacement did the job for us."
"Hm, yeah I heard. Based on what I read, that Huntress chick has been making headlines all over the city. And she hasn't been doing this nearly as long as Batman back when he was around. According to the stories, at least."
This made the commissioner curious, "What do you mean by that?"
"Well, I mean I don't know for sure, but based on her level of experience, I kinda assumed that she may have had another identity in the past. I mean Gotham's had plenty of masked mystery people before and after Batman. Maybe she was one of them at one point."
This made the father in Bruce worried, "You seem to have a pretty big clue about Gotham for someone from so far away."
That actually made Reese smile, "I'm originally a Gothamite, actually. Yeah, back in Keystone, I did my best to keep up with my old home."
Now this made Bruce relax, but only a little bit, "Oh, well, you did a pretty good job with that. Look, maybe we can get to know one another a little bit more later, but I've got a big day ahead of me so.."
Realizing what he meant, Reese suddenly remembered, "Oh, yeah, of course, sorry. I won't take up any more of your time. Anyway, here are my transfer papers."
After taking the papers, Bruce remembered one other thing, "In that case, let me introduce you to your new partner on the force. BARD!" Wayne yelled.
Jesse turned his head to see who he was calling for. Right on cue, a man with brown hair and glasses came by. Once he was there, Wayne introduced them.
"Bard, this is our new transfer and your new partner, Jesse Reese. Reese, this is one of my best detectives around, Jason Bard." Immediately after the boss' introduction, the two men shook hands.
"Nice to finally meet you. When I heard that someone from Keystone was coming, I was thrilled." Bard said.
"Nice to meet you too. But why were you happy to have a guy come in from Keystone, specifically?" Reese wondered.
"Well, I wanted to hear your take about the hero you guys had running around." Bard said, with the emphasis on "running."
This made Jesse laugh a little, "Oh yeah, I figured people would wanna hear about him. Don't worry, I've got all his adventures memorized. Well the ones I know of, at least."
Bard smiled, "Yeah, fair enough. Those super types are always doing stuff that we don't know about. I'm hoping at least one of them writes a tell-all book when they retire. If they retire."
"Don't get your hopes too high up, kid." Commissioner Wayne chimed in. "Batman disappeared and I haven't seen any books written by him."
"All due respect, sir, what makes you think Batman just disappeared? For all we know, he's dead. Probably killed by one of his baddies. Maybe even an army of them." Bard replied.
This caused Bruce to smirk, "It's a possibility, true. But, like the saying goes, "no body, no crime." Well, that's enough small talk from me. You two have fun. Oh, and Reese, good luck with him." With one more humorous smile towards the younger men, Bruce Wayne made his way up the stairs and into his office.
"Hilarious." Bard muttered. "Come on, newbie. Let me introduce you to our finest people."
Interested to see who and what the place had to offer, Jesse followed along.
Commissioner Wayne's Office
Bruce walked into his office, which included golden walls with white streaks, a big brown desk, a couple of filing cabinets, and shelves filled with books and binders. His walls had a few pictures on them. As he sat down on his chair, on the wall on his left were pictures of his late parents, Thomas and Martha Wayne, in one frame, his butler and father figure growing up, Alfred Pennyworth, and his daughter, Julia, in the second frame, and his Uncle Jacob Kane and his cousins/Jacob's daughters, Kate and Beth. On the right wall, there was a picture of the late Lucius Fox and his family in one frame and his surrogate mother/father's friend, Leslie Thompkins, in another.
However, there were other pictures that had people that were just as important to him, if not more: his children. There were three frames of photos. One had his adopted sons and daughter (Dick Grayson, Jason Todd, Tim Drake, and Cassandra Cain) and his one biological son (Damian Wayne) gathered together. In the second frame was Damian again, but in this one he was holding his sister/Bruce's biological daughter Helena on the day she was born while simultaneously smiling, which was rare for Damian. And finally, last but definitely not least, was a framed photo of his late wife and mother of their daughter, Selina Kyle-Wayne. Bruce never did move on from her after she was murdered. Though in hindsight, during the on-again, off-again phase of their relationship, he couldn't really get her out of his head even when they were off-again.
Still, aside from the photos was the stack of paperwork that needed to be done. So, for the time being, it was time to focus on the now. And the now involved getting his work done and continuing to do what he did best no matter the method: helping the city and fighting its injustices.
That being said though, as he got to work, parts of his mind were on Helena and Damian.
His and Helena's relationship wasn't the same after Selina died, not that he didn't expect it to change after that. But they were pretty much estranged by this point. Of course, that didn't mean that he stopped worrying about her. In fact, his level of worry had increased as of late. While he knew that it would happen sooner or later, the situations she had gotten into were getting dangerous as time went by. And now, recently, he's had this gut feeling that something worse was coming their way. And it needed to be stopped.
As for Damian, he disappeared back in 2000. At first, he figured that he just needed to get away from New Gotham to sort himself out again. But Damian had never been under the radar like this before. Bruce tried using the Batcomputer and whatever tracking arsenal he had at his disposal, but there was no luck. Then he remembered that Damian had already figured out how to get past his "watchful eyes" as he had literally grown up around them. The only upside to this was that Bruce knew that his son was still alive and kicking. Literally, when it came to kicking. He would feel it in his guts if any of his children were hurt... or worse. He even had a feeling that Jason was dead before he found him in the remains of the warehouse Joker blew up with the second Robin inside all those years ago. Still, Bruce hoped to see his son again soon.
Streets of New Gotham
After meeting most of his fellow officers, Jesse Reese is now being given a tour of New Gotham by James Bard. While Reese may have been originally from Gotham, the "New Gotham" should be anybody's first clue that the city had changed majorly.
Lucky for him, Bard was one hell of a tour guide. "You've been gone a while now, Reese. After the cataclysm that struck Old Gotham and the city became a no man's land, the city had to be rebuilt. The only buildings that stayed up after the earthquake were the Wayne Enterprises offices, which were actually built to withstand earthquakes. The commissioner's CEO, Lucius Fox, made sure of that, God rest his soul."
"At least the city was able to rebuild." Reese remarked.
"Yeah, well, a part of me still thinks that we should've gotten help from someone other than Lex Luthor. After everything he'd done before that, you'd think someone would've found something that would've made the charges against him stick from before the event." Bard stated bitterly. "Still, the city was freed and became a part of the United States again, so that was a plus."
"I get it. I was just a kid when both those things happened. My mom took me out of Gotham with her to stay with her family. Course, my parents were going their separate ways by then, so it's no mystery why we stayed out." Reese commented.
"Oh yeah?" Bard started to ask. "What happened?"
Not wanting everyone to know his family's dirty laundry, Reese kept things simple, "Oh, uh, my mom couldn't handle my dad's lifestyle anymore. Said it wasn't safe for either one of us." Reese answered half-truthfully. "She was right." he muttered.
Bard nodded as he understood completely (or so he thought), "Ah, gotcha. So what? Your old man was mixed up in dangerous business or something? Cause in Gotham, you'll have to be more specific. If you want to, of course. We don't have to get into details if you don't." Bard reassured.
Reese shifted uncomfortably, "Yeah, no, I'm good. I mean, I'm not comfortable telling the full story just yet, but yeah, dad was bad news."
"Got it." Bard said. "Yeah, I got my own father issues. I loved my mom, but if I could've sent my old man to hell, myself, I would've. Let me tell you, when uniformed officers came knocking on our door and told us that he got himself killed, the only reason my mom and I cried was out of relief, not out of grief.
Surprised to hear this, Reese asked, "What? What happened?"
"Well, one minute, the deadbeat was trying to rob a gas station, the next, he was just dead. One of the customers was an off-duty cop who was smart enough to keep a personal weapon on him in Gotham City. The old man tried to get tough and pull one on him, but the officer pulled the trigger first, thank God." Bard remarked.
"Damn. And that didn't bother you? Not even a little?" Reese asked with a shortness of breath.
"Fuck no!" Bard halfway shouted. "I know it might not seem right for a 10 year old to react this way, but for me, that meant it was finally over. No more of him coming home raging and drunk. No more walking around feeling like I was hit by a wrecking ball. And more importantly, no more hearing my mom crying in pain after he took out how pathetic he was on her."
Reese looked at him sympathetically, "I'm sorry man. My situation wasn't really like that, but still, what your father put you and your mom through was messed up."
"It's alright." Bard stated honestly. "Like I said, it was over a long time ago. And hey, in case you were gonna ask at one point, that's why I wanted to be a cop. That one random officer ended up saving mine and my mom's life, not to mention the gas station clerk's."
Reese wound up smirking at that. I guess miracles do happen, he thought to himself.
Dark Horse Bar
Helena was working her shift at the bar. As usual, she always does this before she starts the night job that she doesn't get paid for. Even if she did, she still wouldn't be paid enough considering the crap that goes around in the city. But little did Batman's little girl know, she was about to meet another legacy heroine.
"Hello there." Helena turned around and found a blonde woman talking to her. "Mind if I just get a beer?" she asked.
"Sure." she answered. "Where'd you come from?"
"What? You didn't see me walk in?" the mystery blonde asked in a joking manner.
Helena snorted a little, "I meant when did you get into the city?" she asked, knowing an out-of-towner when she sees one.
This caused the new girl in town to nod with a little smile, "Got off the bus not that long ago. Had to deal with a few creeps on my way here, but that's nothing I can't handle."
Helena gave the young woman a look of respect, "Nice. Alright here's your drink, Miss..."
"Lance. My first name's Dinah, but I use my middle name to separate from my mother. And I mean that in more ways than one." she explained. "You can call me Laurel." she said, reaching out her hand.
"Helena," who shook her hand, "nice to meet you. I don't suppose you'll be a new regular here."
"Oh, don't worry. You'll see me around. Trust me, I plan on leaving my mark in this city." Laurel reassured her. "See you soon, Helena."
"Bye." Helena replied. As Laurel left, Helena suddenly found herself interested to see what that woman had cooked up for New Gotham. She hoped it was unique.
As night time came, Helena put on her other work uniform and got started on her "rounds." But little did she know, a specific someone had the same idea.
In a crappy part of the city, a woman, who had finally finished her shift at the nearby strip club, was walking home when she saw two men glaring at her. While this made her nervous, she felt that it was best to stay (outwardly) calm and just keep walking normally. But that was before they started following her, then she felt that it was probably best to run. But because she was wearing heels, it did her no good, which she found out the hard way when she was grabbed.
"AAAAAHHH!!!" she screamed and struggled. "NO!! LET ME GO!!!"
But the men just laughed. "Relax, baby, don't worry. We're gonna make you feel nice and good." The bearded one said in a menacing tone.
"Yeah, just relax." the clean-shaven one with the piercings said in an almost equally menacing tone. "All you gotta do is hold still and let us do the work. I'm sure you can get out of your comfort zone for one night, right?"
The two men laughed in disturbing manners while the woman cried. Then the bearded turned her around in order to force her to face the wall, right before he signaled his friend to unzip his pants. But before he could finish unzipping...
"HEY!!" screamed out someone in the corner. "She told you to LET. HER. GO."
The would-be rapists turned to see that the voice was from another woman. But this woman was different. It was obvious based on the fact that she was wearing an all black bodysuit with a domino bask that went with it. Whoever she was, these freaks were in for it now. But they clearly underestimated her considering all they could do was laugh at the sight of her.
"Hey, you know what, yeah, let her go. Now this chick, she might be a lot more fun." said the clean-shaven brute.
Agreeing with him, the bearded brute complied. And based on the look on his face, he was ready for some "real fun." But neither one of them knew what was truly in store for them.
As the would-be victim was released, she looked back at the costumed woman, clearly worried about what would happen to her.
But the mysterious new vigilante reassured her, "Go. I'll be fine. Trust me."
Still a bit hesitant, the girl did as she was told and ran to safety.
"Now, as for the two of you. I'm gonna have to make sure that you can never do something like this again."
Still smiling, they both took a few steps towards her.
"Oh yeah? And what exactly are you gonna do?" asked the clean-shaven brute in an uninterested and mocking tone.
The new vigilante shrugged and said, "I was thinking of singing you to sleep."
This caused the brutes' eyes to widen in amusement, then burst into even more laughter.
"This ought'a be good." said the bearded one.
She smiled, "Oh, trust me, it will be good. For me."
Then as she promised, she sang. Except this "song" came out in the form of a scream. Then the next thing the two shitheads knew, they were thrown backwards with their feat off the ground by a sonic shriek. Once they hit a car, they were back on the ground, lying unconscious.
As the superpowered woman stepped out of the alleyway, she took one good look at the sleeping dirtbags, then looked to her left. There, she saw the woman who was close to being brutalized by these so-called "men."
The stripper looked at her in shock and awe, then asked, "Who are you?"
The mysterious new vigilante looked at her and answered, "Black Canary." Then she told the woman to call the cops so that they could take the two creeps in. After that, with her abnormal strength, she leapt higher than any normal human could and jumped jumped from rooftop to rooftop.
Author's Notes
Well, there you have it. For this story, I turned Helena Kyle into Helena Wayne like her comic book counterpart and I decided to incorporate pieces of the Arrowverse's Black Canary into this one. And yes, Bruce Wayne is also in this story as the GCPD Commissioner, just like his Earth-2 counterpart from the golden age.
By the way, I know Alfred's opening was long and drawn out. I tend to do that, it annoys me too. I guess I just wanted to give you guys a good idea on how the characters got to this point.
Speaking of the characters, more will show up in later chapters, especially more members of the Bat-Family. Though there might be a few differences in origin stories.

-The explanation for how Wayne Enterprises buildings stayed up during the earthquake came from Lucius Fox in the comic.

-In the comics, Jason Bard's mother was murdered by his father, who then died many years later in a scuffle between him, Jason, and a thug who became Jason's associate named Scratch, who died saving him from his father. But for my story, I decided to give him and his mom a happier fate.
-Also, the part where Black Canary stopped a couple of rapists was inspired by the pilot episode of Birds of Prey (2002) when Helena Kyle saved Dinah Redmond from the same fate at the hands of some guy she met on the bus ride to New Gotham.
Additional Note:
-Reese's theory about Helena having a previous identity at one point will come into play in at least one later chapter.
