Hello readers, this is the start of what is hopefully a great story! I am Frozenyx, but I go by nyx, I am the first of the two authors writing this story. It is a co-authored work between myself and the other author who will introduce themselves in the next chapter! We will rotate between each chapter, meaning I wrote the first- they will write the next, and I will write the third so on and so on.
I hope you enjoy the story and thanks for reading, of course we do not own Percy Jackson in any way, all rights to Rick Riordan.
Son of the Moon and Sea
The sun slowly crept up from the horizon as the moon faded away. As Apollo rode higher and higher into the sky singing his latest remix version of The Children of Piraeus. Apollo took a deep sigh, thinking about the sun and the moon, the relationship he had with his sister; they were so open with each other- or as open as two bickering siblings that were forever immortal- truly got. While Apollo was thinking about his sister he decided to check up on where she might be, looking down on the world below, he started looking for his sister…
Apollo's keen eyes scoured the countryside, it would only make sense that his sister, Artemis would be exploring the wilderness; on some grand adventure. Eventually his sharp eyes caught a glimpse of silver, a hunter of Artemis? Apollo thought to himself as he whispered to his pegasus to continue onwards without him. They gave a soft snort in response as the god flashed down to earth. Arriving in the middle of a forest, with the soft, mossy ground below his feet, Apollo glanced around him, for any sign of the hunter he had seen from above.
In the few moments of silence Apollo looked around, he found no sign of the flash of silver, nor any noise that was out of place for a forest. Apollo closed his eyes focusing his senses, he could feel his connection to Artemis grow stronger… she must be nearby, otherwise it wouldn't be possible for him to feel the connection. Opening his eyes, Apollo started heading in a straight line, his gut would tell him if he was wrong, after all, that is the power of a twin connection.
Walking for another few minutes Apollo stumbled upon the yawning entrance of a cave. With an apprehensive step forwards, he started to wonder, why exactly would his sister be stuck up in a cave in the middle of nowhere?
Walking into the damp confinement, he generated a small light with a simple flick of his finger, the light ignited the surrounding cave. It was a damp place, with both stalactites and stalagmites, each protruding from their respective places. Bats circled above and small critters scoured on the ground. There was no doubt about it, the goddess of the hunt was most definitely in this cave, especially since the ecosystem was acting very oddly in this specific cave. It was more alive than any normal ecosystem should've been.
Apollo grunted at the sight of so many insects scurrying across the damp floor, the sound of the bats screeching and their wings moving set Apollo on edge. He kept questioning himself, why was his sister in a place like this?
Suddenly as Apollo moved past a particularly big stalagmite he stumbled across a silver tent. Apollo grinned as he saw what he believed to be his sister's tent. As he approached the tent he suddenly heard a noise like a light scream of pain followed by a lot of panting and groaning. Apollo rushed towards the tent entrance before he heard another voice.
"It's almost done Artemis, just a little longer, you're almost there.", the mysterious voice said.
Apollo froze right outside of the tent, what was going on? Why was Artemis in such pain, who was this woman talking to her? Why was she in such a nasty place? For once, Apollo decided to wait outside, rather than barge in and quench his thirst for knowledge. f
As Apollo stood there the noise of a final grunt filled his ears. His curiosity was burning him up, questions filled his mind. Finally he heard the mystery woman speak once more.
"You've done great Artemis, now you should rest. I'm sure you must be tired after such an effort."
Apollo couldn't take it anymore, pushing through the silver flap he entered the tent. In all the scenarios Apollo could've ever imagined this was not one of them.
Hestia sat on the ground near a large bed, kneeling with something in her hands. Apollo couldn't see what exactly she was holding in her hands. As his eyes moved from Hestia further up the bed, he saw his sister Artemis, her eyes wide with shock and confusion staring right back at his own. Artemis was dressed in a gown used in hospitals for childbirth…
Apollo looked between Hestia and Artemis for another moment, silence filled the tent as the two goddesses stared back at him. Suddenly Apollo's eyes went wide.
"Y-y-you… You had a CHILD?", Apollo shouted pointing at the figure in Hestia's hands.
Silence permeated the tent, not a word spoken. Artemis obviously hadn't wanted anyone to know that much Apollo knew. Suddenly another thought crossed his mind.
"Artemis… who is the father…", Apollo said slowly staring right into his sisters eyes.
Artemis visibly gulped before slowly answering in a shaky voice, "Poseidon…."
Apollo stood in the tent dumbfounded, Artemis staring at him with a bit of fear and apprehension. Hestia meanwhile was watching the said child, cooing the child into calmness as the two siblings stared at each other with bewilderment.
Suddenly Apollo asked, "Does father know about this?" Hestia's head snapped over to Artemis who was looking at her. Hestia's face was conflicted, she knew Zeus' reaction to the fact that Poseidon had slept with Artemis wouldn't be good. In fact, he would most likely try to punish both of them for it. Then again, Artemis had asked Hestia to hide all of this. Apollo stumbling across them in such a way was not part of the plan.
Hestia closed her eyes thinking of anything to say.
In the time that Hestia was thinking Apollo spoke once more, "I'll go inform father for you, you look like you need rest after all…", Apollo's voice was monotone as he spoke to his sister.
"NO! Apollo please do not tell father. I-I fear what he will do if he knew.", Artemis suddenly cried out to him.
Apollo looked back at her and said nothing as he stared at her. Artemis looked at him with pleading eyes, saying, "It was a simple mistake.. Everyone makes mistakes…"
Apollo felt a surge of anger flow through him, "Your saying your child was a mistake? Or the fact that you bedded Poseidon was a mistake? Or the fact I am here now is a mistake? What do you mean sister.", Apollo said with a stern voice.
Artemis shot back defensively, "My child is no mistake, my child will be raised correctly. The mistake.." She faltered for a moment before looking at the frosty look her brother was giving her. Glancing at Hestia she gathered her strength saying, "The mistake was you being here now." Artemis said in almost a whisper.
Apollo stood there dumbfounded, his brain was having trouble comprehending what he was hearing and what he was seeing. Two things were bluntly obvious to him though. Firstly, Artemis had a child, there was no mistake there. The thing was in Hestia's arms. Secondly, his sister seemed very angry. Though it made no sense to him why she would be taking her anger out on him.
Apollo stared at his sister thinking about how he was the mistake in this situation. Grimacing Apollo opened his mouth to speak but thought better of it. Hestia watched the exchange come to a close with a blank face, she had a feeling that Artemis's actions would have repercussions.
Without another word, Apollo flashed out, leaving Artemis and Hestia, along with the young born child.
On Olympus:
Apollo flashed from the less than glorious tent to the open streets of Olympus. His sense worked double time to compensate for all the lovely smelling scents and sights. Apollo shook his head and brisky began walking towards the council meeting room.
Zeus, Hera, and the other deities were seated around a big table as Apollo entered the council meeting space. The atmosphere in the room was tense, and the few gods watched Apollo take his seat with anticipation.
At the head of the table, Zeus opened the conversation. "We have been waiting for you, Apollo. What updates do you have?"
Apollo inhaled deeply as he made an effort to collect his thoughts. He was aware that what he was about to say would have significant repercussions. He said, his voice firm but tinged with emotion, "Father, I have learned something concerning Artemis."
Zeus leaned forward and assumed a solemn appearance as all eyes went to him. "Apollo, speak."
Apollo drew a breath, then said, "Artemis has given birth to a child."
The room was filled with a murmur of surprise and perplexity. Zeus scowled bitterly, echoing the room with his mighty voice. "Artemis? An infant? How is that even possible?"
Apollo described what he had seen in the cave, describing how he had discovered Artemis with Hestia and the infant in her arms. He recounted Artemis' request to keep it a secret from Zeus and admitted that Poseidon was the father.
Zeus smashed his hand upon the table as his face grew red with rage. He roared, "Poseidon!" "I won't put up with my siblings acting inappropriately like that.
Hera, who had been quietly listening, piped out with a worried tone in her voice. "Zeus, we need to think about the effects of what we do. Fearing your fury, Artemis has requested for confidentiality. We have to handle this carefully."
Zeus glanced at Hera, barely controlling his rage. "Delicacy? She has deceived me and betrayed my trust. I won't put up with it. Not to mention…." Zeus turned his furious gaze towards the Sea gods chair.
With a calm yet firm voice, Apollo made an intervention. "Father, I recognize your rage, but we also need to think about the child's welfare. Already feeling terrible about what happened, Artemis wishes to raise the child 'the right way'."
Zeus' fury briefly faded, briefly being replaced with a glimmer of sympathy. The tension in the room was audible as he sighed loudly. "Fine. We shall keep this a secret for the time being out of consideration for the youngster. But Artemis won't escape punishment. She will face the consequences of her actions."
Apollo nodded, knowing that his sister would have to face the repercussions of her choices. There was nothing further that he could do. His father made his decision, Apollo was thankful that he had calmed down enough to lessen the punishment he had in mind. He hoped that his relationship with Artemis could eventually heal from this revelation; after all it was him who told Zeus against her wishes.
Just a moment later Apollo could feel his sister's presence as she flashed into the council room. She seemed a little run down, tired, most likely from the events that had transpired beforehand. Apollo couldn't help but feel a twinge of guilt as he glanced over at the now present Artemis, who sat quietly
Apollo couldn't help but feel a twinge of guilt as he glanced at Artemis, who now sat quietly with her eyes downcast, no doubt guessing the reason for this meeting. Apollo knew that their relationship would no doubt be strained, Artemis wasn't stupid, she would know that it was her brother that had given their father this information. However, Apollo firmly believed that secrets had a way of poisoning the bonds between family, after all, Olympus had this very fact poisoned them before in the past.
The council meeting continued as Zeus asked Artemis to confirm the information that was 'anonymously' given to them. To Apollo's surprise, she told the council that she had a child. There was a moment of silence before the deiteies starting discussing the best course of action- some advocated for severe punishment, others cited Artemis' loyalty and dedication to her duties and Olympus. Both of the twins- Artemis and Apollo, remained silent. There minds a torrent of conflicting emotions, both thinking about the other.
Finally, Zeus spoke out in a thundering voice, "Artemis, you will face consequences for your actions. But for now, we will keep this matter concealed. The child will be raised under the protection of the gods, away from prying eyes and gossiping mouths." Zeus' eyes trailed towards Aphrodite who only nodded in understanding.
Artemis just nodded silently, her mind a flurry of emotions. She had expected harsher treatment, especially coming from her father- perhaps her father just didn't know who she had conceived the child with.
Either way, Artemis felt the anger towards her brother grow and grow. How dare he betray his own sister's wishes and run straight to father? She closed her eyes looking away from her brother, thinking about her child. She felt the anger dissipate as she thought about how her child was going to be living with her. She would raise her child right, and her child would turn into a righteous hero that knew right from wrong. She was sure of it, as she opened her eyes she took a long sigh looking around the throne room. All the eyes were on her and Artemis understood why.
"I will raise my child correctly, and accept whatever punishment is directed towards me.", Artemis found herself saying out loud. Then she flashed away from the throne room- back to the cave, back to her child.
That's the end of the first chapter, hopefully you enjoyed, feel free to leave any constructive criticism behind, thanks!
