After helping Fishlegs and Meatlug out of the wrecked half of a house, the Dragon Master left the rest to the chief. Stoick was incredibly curious about how Fishlegs came to be riding a Gronckle, but had his duties to his village first.
Hiccup however, still in full Dragon Master attire, strode straight over to Fishlegs.
"Sorry Dragon Master" Fishlegs apologises shyly as a crowd starts to form.
The Dragon Master kneels down, checking on Meatlug. But she is fine, not even a scratch, just partially dozing off on the apparently comfortable small pile of rubble she created upon landing.
Standing up and just glancing towards Fishlegs, the Dragon Master beckons him over to the opposite side of the broken house. He made sure they were far enough from the villagers gathering around Stoick and Meatlug, but still close enough to keep an eye on the napping Gronckle.
"What happened?" He asks calmly, noting Fishlegs' downturned head and gathering that he expected to be chastised.
"Uh, I lost control of Meatlug" Fishlegs says awkwardly.
"But why did you lose control?" He asks, leaning casually against the wall behind him.
"I uh, I looked down and saw everything so far away and let go of Meatlug"
"Ok" Hiccup says thoughtfully, pulling out his notepad and charcoal pencil. "Anything else that went wrong?"
"Uhm, I don't think so." Fishlegs says while trying to peer over at what The Dragon Master was drawing.
Before Fishlegs can see, the book is snapped shut. "Care to help me bring Meatlug back to my house?"
"Sure!" Fishlegs says, eager to prove himself useful after his mishap.
Together they coax Meatlug to her feet, and up the road towards the Dragon Master's house. Fortunately, the giant lump of a dragon fully woke up fairly quickly and soon enough took minimal convincing to plod along.
Along the way, a few young Vikings looked curiously towards the Gronckle, but dived in between houses as they came past.
This didn't put off the Dragon Master however, and he stopped a few times along their journey to show various Vikings that Meatlug wasn't a threat. Some even overcame their fear enough to scratch under Meatlug's chin, and she enjoyed all that extra attention massively.
Between stops, the Dragon Master and Fishlegs chatted about dragons and told each other tales of what they'd missed.
Despite the delays, they made it back to the Dragon Master's house, and round the back towards the rear door.
"How are we getting her through the doorway?" Fishlegs asks, breaking their conversation briefly.
As if in response, Meatlug fires a lava ball at the ground beside the house, promptly striding into it and laying down.
"Well I guess that solves that issue" the Dragon Master chuckles.
They head inside his house, and he removes, then places his helmet beside the back door.
"I apologise for the mess" Hiccup shakes his head, "I didn't have time to clean some of this away."
Fishlegs looks around in amazement, there were hastily constructed tables everywhere with leather everywhere. A few steel rods hung from a section of wall with hooks in that was a suspiciously lighter colour of wood than the rest of the house's walls. The planking was also slightly offset, although perfectly parallel with the rest of the wall. He also noticed that the original planking above and below the new patch was clearly more vibrant, like it had once had a support pillar in front of it. And maybe that had caused the now patched hole he theorised.
"I got those scraps from a few decommissioned dragon traps" Hiccup says, gesturing towards the wall. He then wanders up the stairs to get changed out of his full leather flightsuit into something more comfortable.
But Fishlegs' eyes are more drawn to the mountains of leather and the large sewing station set up in the corner.
While Hiccup is walking back downstairs, Toothless slinks after him and brushes against their legs before curling up with some scraps of leather in the corner.
"I just have to be careful I don't take any from Toothless' mini nest over there," Hiccup chuckles, "He likes that almost as much as my bed to sleep in."
"But anyway-" he changes the topic. "When I was out with Bucket, we saw a nearly 200ft long Submaripper"
"Wow!" Fishlegs says, "That's like a class 6 leviathan! I wish I had seen that." When it came to new things about dragons, Fishlegs was and always had been the keenest ears in the room.
"Yeah, but uh.." Hiccup tries to gently ask his large friend, "Well, have you heard of what else we saw out there?"
"No, I was having more flying lessons with Astrid up by- Stop laughing! I *Am* improving!"
Hiccup sniggers, "Oh I'm sure. Anyway, but you remember Gobber's tale of seeing the Jormungandr with Bucket? Turns out he wasn't making things up this time."
"What, like the actual Jormungandr is here? Ragnarök is nigh?" comes Fishlegs' worried reply.
"No, I believe it to just be an incredibly large serpent-like dragon. We named it the Jormung." Hiccup explains, "But it occurred to me after seeing the Jormung that it definitely needs to be ranked with a leviathan class."
"Hmm, ok. So if it's snake-like then its probably not very thick, and more long? Well how long so we know what sort of range for it?" Fishlegs wonders.
"Well it ate Buckets ship, as well as that class 6 Submaripper in one bite a piece."
"Whole?" Fishlegs asks incredulously, "what sort of sizes are we talking about here?"
Hiccup laughs, realising that most of Berk will never have seen in person a dragon larger than 100 feet long. "I'd say around 65 feet wide to about 80 feet at it's widest parts. And I saw maybe 400 feet of it's body, and there was definitely still a lot more under the water as it could support all that body pretty much vertically out of the water."
Fishlegs' jaw drops in awe, trying to imagine such a large dragon. "But that means it might be like, close to 1000 feet long? How is that possible?"
Hiccup leaves Fishlegs to grapple with the theoretical size of the Jormung, and gets his sketchbooks out to continue what he started earlier.
He wanders over to where about half a leather saddle sits on a bench, most the rough form in place, but lots more work still needed. Using both that saddle (Which he was making for Astrid and Stormfly), and the rough concept sketches for Meatlug's he'd made earlier, he started a more finalised drawing for a Gronckle saddle.
While he worked, Hiccup could still hear Fishlegs pacing back and forth. By the time Hiccup had finished his final drawings, Fishlegs exclaimed "Well that must be a class 10 leviathan! I've never heard of something so big. Have you?"
"Yeah, probably a class 10" Hiccup murmurs, fetching out some more leather bits.
"Maybe it's the biggest species of dragon ever discovered!"
"You should see the king of dragons" Hiccup chuckles under his breath, but Fishlegs is too engrossed to hear what he is saying anyway.
"Our first class 10..." Fishlegs murmurs in a crazed awe.
Slightly tired at how lost in his own world Fishlegs is, Hiccup organises his stuff to continue making Astrid's saddle. But as he does so, he remembers the reason he stopped where he did - he needed more steel from the forge. And that meant going to Gobber, who would still be beyond drunk.
"Oh well, nothing else to do" he declares out loud, grabs his helmet as he leaves Fishlegs dawdling in his house.
