Hiccup wakes to find Toothless perched on the side of his bed, looking curiously down at him. His head was cocked to one side and his tongue was out slightly as he attempted to smile.
"That's really creepy y'know" Hiccup remarks, sitting up and pushing the dragon off his bed.
Raising a single nostril and snorting, Toothless huffed and started downstairs.
Getting dressed in his Dragon Master leather armour and riding gear, Hiccup wonders downstairs and grabs the Gronckle saddle off the side he made for Meatlug and Fishlegs.
"Hey bud? Mind carrying this for me?" Hiccup asks Toothless who was standing by the door waiting.
With only a small huff, Toothless accepted the second saddle over his own to carry over to the Ingerman's house.
They wandered down the village, and Hiccup noticed that less and less villagers each day did a double take as they passed them.
'So Vikings can learn to live beside dragons after all', he muses. 'Or at least three."
Fishlegs' answers the door to his house and after a brief welcome, him and Hiccup together take the saddle down from Toothless' back to bring it just inside the doorway.
"I can't believe Astrid just effortlessly walked out with Stormfly's saddle last night" Hiccup mumbles while the two of them support either end of Meatlug's saddle.
Fishlegs' dad comes downstairs as the two teens finish up manhandling the saddle into a suitable place on the floor.
"Good morning Dragon Master" He says cheerfully,
"Morning S- uh Mr Ingerman" The Dragon Master replies, suddenly glad he hadn't yet removed his helmet.
Fishlegs' awkwardly introduces his father, Sköld Ingerman to the Dragon Master. Fishlegs' father is a handyman by trade, but as somewhat of a jack of all trades, is most commonly found doing whatever jobs around the village need doing the most at that time.
"Stoick 'as me off on this next fishing outing. We're goin' even further North than before, and at this time of year we're gonna 'ave to be careful of the ice."
"Good luck with the fishing, I've heard the village may be running a bit low on fish and general food supplies" The Dragon Master confides.
"Aye, we are a wee bit short for this winter that's setting in on us. But that's why i may be out a while, but I'll be back soon enough."
"And to make things worse, you have Spitelout with you" Fishlegs comments, "You may be deaf before you can even arrive back."
"Very true son" Sköld laughs, picking up his fishing gear and heading for the door. "Try not to wreck the place before your mother gets home!"
"How does it feel to meet someone for the first time you've known for years?" Fishlegs' asked Hiccup curiously as they watched Sköld walk down towards the docks.
"Strange. But I guess that is the first time the 'Dragon Master' has met him." Hiccup reasons.
"Anyway," he continues, "Shall we wait for Meatlug here? What time does she get here?"
After about half an hour of conversation, their topic had drifted onto the Jormung.
"Do you think it's that serious?" Fishlegs asks.
"As long as our ships don't go too close to its island and it doesn't get any closer to us, I think we will be fine." Hiccup reasons
"But why only now have we seen it?" Fishlegs asks, "And do you think that could be the cause of all the fish disappearing?"
Fishlegs' last question makes Hiccup pause, and he takes off his helmet as he thinks.
"I hadn't really considered that as a reason die to it's size"
"It may not eat the small fish itself, but if its pushing Submarippers and other large dragons out of its territory, their food like Seashockers will be pushed up too and then so will the fish in turn. The ocean is one tightly woven ecosystem after all."
"You're right, I hadn't considered the chain reaction. Maybe it's recently moved to an island closer? And just scared the fish away by the chain reaction? But the island we saw it at is a fair distance from Berk still.. maybe it's trying to set up and expand it's territory towards Berk even?"
"Maybe? But I think it's more likely to have just scared off its prey, and so scared the fish even further away."
Hiccup is visibly relieved, "Good, that means we probably have a fair amount of time before it comes too close to Berk. Maybe we can sort out our food issue before then. Speaking of food, you should have seen the Submaripper being eaten whole by the Jormung!"
"Are you sure it was a fully grown Submaripper?" Fishlegs asks, still doubtful.
"Definitely, it was possibly the largest of the species I've seen. But something I noticed was that it seemed to give in to its fate when it was being eaten by the Jormung, almost just going still. So maybe the Jormung has a venom?"
"I've heard of a similar paralysing venom in some creatures the travelling vendors talk about. Most of the time in snake species I believe, and if the Jormung looks like a giant serpent.."
"I'd say there's a fairly good chance it has similar characteristics." Hiccup finishes his thought.
Before they get any further however, they hear the beat of wings outside, so get up to see which dragon is arriving.
"Doesn't sound like Meatlu- Oh it's Stormfly! Ooh, and she's wearing the saddle you made her and 'Strid." Fishlegs comments animatedly.
As Stormfly landed before them, stepped towards Hiccup and offered her head out towards him.
Uncertain of what Stormfly wanted, he extended his hand out to rub her jaw, but while his hand was outstretched she dropped a sheep shoulder blade into his hand.
"Eugh, thanks Stormfly" he grimaces, "Who's sheep was that anyway?"
Stormfly watched him place the bone to the side and walk a few steps back to find something to wipe the Nadder drool off from his hands.
When Hiccup had turned around again, the bone had been picked up and dropped by his feet once more, with Stormfly looking expectantly at him.
"What do you want? Want to play with it?" He offers, chucking the bone back over Stormfly's head, causing her to playfully stomp after it.
"I guess that's what she wanted" Fishlegs laughs. "Wait, didn't Astrid say she played fetch with a bone with Stormfly when she met her?"
"You're right! When did she tell you?" He chuckles.
"Well, It took a long time to chip through the hardened Gronckle lava, even with two of us" Fishlegs' rolled his eyes. "Speaking of that gorgeous hunk of a Gronckle, I'll go look by her nest to see if she's still there."
"Sure, see you" Hiccup bids him farewell, and returns to the Nadder playfully shaking her tail in front of him.
"Maybe this is the same bone as the one Astrid played fetch with you with, you look like an excited puppy" he laughs, turning over the bone once more coated in dragon slobber. "Maybe I could carve something onto this? And fit it into your saddle.. hmm."
Wandering around Stormfly, he looks for an appropriate place he could fix it in the future, holding the bone out in front of him like he was lining up the perfect angle for a photograph.
"Ah, there. Right by your neck and the Axe holder."
Stormfly chirps, and Hiccup pockets the bone as he turns to see Astrid jogging over. The shoulder blade can wait a bit.
