Gasping in shock, the Vikings all look out across the large, mostly open field towards the distant trees, watching as the jet black dragon fells multiple as he crashes to the ground.

The massive dragon begins beating it's wings, the massive gusts of wind sending all the airborne dragons reeling backwards and flapping madly to stay upright.

Gobber, down on the ground, gets the rest of the Vikings moving again, putting aside his emotions to get the rest to safety.

"Snotlout!" Astrid yells, "Just stay out of range, we can distract it long enough for the others to get to the cave!"

Despite his panic, Snotlout nods, taking Hookfang upwards to continue to distract the Jormung.

Over at the crash site, Hiccup groans. His ribs in agony as he rolls out from between Toothless' legs and stomach where he was grabbed when Toothless felt them flying apart mid-air.

Hobbling to his feet, Hiccup checks over the closest side of the crumpled form of his friend, who is panting heavily.

The landing didn't seem to have given any serious injuries to either of them, however a shallow gash runs down the left side of Toothless' belly. That must have been from where the Jormung caught him, sending them into the uncontrollable spin Hiccup muses.

"Bud. Hey bud, we need to get out of here." Hiccup coaxes, but Toothless doesn't respond.

Once again worried, Hiccup staggers around the Night Fury to see that they hadn't escaped quite as harm free as he had thought.

One of the trees they had knocked down on their landing had in fact hit Toothless, and a short branch was piercing his left tail fin, and resting across one of his wings and then more of his tail also. Fortunately it was mostly propped up by some more debris further up, so it's full weight wasn't crushing down on Toothless.

Hurriedly rushing over, Hiccup tries to remove the log but cannot move the fully grown pine tree off of his friend.

"Uhm, uhm think. Think." He says, patting himself down to find anything that could help.

"Ahg! Knife." He declares, unsheathing it from his vambrace and setting about cutting through the branch piercing Toothless' tail fin.

As he worked, Toothless eventually came to, shaking his head with a drowsy warble.

"Bud! Hey hey hey, how are you doing? Your left fin is pierced!"

Toothless opens and closes his other tail fin, causing Hiccup to realise what he'd missed. The tree had pierced Toothless' false fin.

Although the first iteration Hiccup had originally made out of simple brown leather, and needed Hiccup to steer it, the fin had been altered when they were far from Berk, and they had scrounged up supplies from other villages to alter it so it was fixed, meaning Toothless wouldn't need him there to fly.

Hiccup had painted it black and covered up the mechanical bits to make it sit flush to his tail, and had done such a good job of it, had in his panic, even managed to fool himself it was the real one of Toothless' fins.

"We need to use your red fin more often" he chuckles to himself.

Finally getting through the branch, he slowly pulls out the wooden stake, but even as carefully as he can isn't enough and the fin rips even more.

But just glad Toothless isn't hurt, he crawls over to Toothless' head and hugs him.

Hiccup stands up beside his downed dragon, wincing as he holds his own ribs.

"I'm sorry bud, but there's no way we can move that tree with us both injured. I'll cover you up so you're safe and I'll get help."

Toothless grabs another fallen branch in reach with his jaws and lays it over his own back.

Hiccup smiles, and starts adding more foliage to hide him.

Back up in the skies on the other side of the island, Snotlout and and Astrid continue to keep the Jormung's attention. After a few minutes and ensuring the rest of the Vikings are safe inside the cave, the twins pass by with both Barf and Belch billowing a large cloud of Zippleback gas behind them.

Lighting the flammable, airborne trail between the Jormung and the other dragon riders gives them a few seconds reprieve, and at Astrid's signal, they separate.

Snotlout and the twins make a beeline for the cave and are met by Fishlegs on the way, while Astrid starts flying out to sea to circle around the Jormung over towards where Toothless crash landed.

The explosive gas had disoriented the serpentine dragon, but it quickly gathered its bearings and watched as Astrid and Stormfly flew off to sea. The smell of Vikings was still strong however, so it kept searching and noticed Hookfang disappear into the cave.

Refolding it's wings and latching them to its sides, it slithered slowly out of the bay and towards the cave. Before it was halfway to the cave however, it noticed one more Viking making it's way along the cliff wall coming towards it.

The heir of Berk was walking as fast as he could, but was limping and had to hold his left ribs. Hiccup noticed the Jormung making its way over towards him and he tried to break into a run, but tripped over himself. Getting up quickly he once more began to run, slowly building up his speed and gritting his teeth through the pain shooting around his leg and side.

From inside the cave mouth, the Vikings are all but unaware of Hiccup's approach and upon seeing the Jormung snaking towards them, back safely away from the cave mouth. They watch as is takes a sharp turn towards and then along the base of the cliff so it's parallel to the rock wall and then speeds up towards them.

They can now hear Hiccup to the right of the cave cursing as he runs towards the cave mouth, outrunning his death through sheer willpower. Sprinting towards each other, both hunter and hunted roar, and Hiccup dives towards the entrance just as the Jormung snaps upwards.

The cheers die in the Viking's throats as Hiccup's left leg gets caught in the beast's jaws, smashing him into the top right of the cave mouth.

He drops to the ground as the Jormung's razor sharp teeth cut clean through his leg, bones and all. Hiccup is out cold from his head's rough impact on the rock wall, and a trickle of blood starts matting his hair.

Everyone in the cave rushes over and drags him further inside, the metal on his armour grinding as it is scraped over the bare stone floor.
