AU - The Barkleys try to finish connecting Uncle Jim to Tom Barkley's murder.

This is the third part of the "Worth" series, following both "Worth Busted Knuckles" and "Worth Mending Fences." In this AU that takes place about a year and a half after Heath joined the family, the Barkley family deals with holidays, births, miscommunications, irritations, and—is it possible?—another wedding or two.

I've gotten stalled on this follow-up to Shades of Elsinore, so I'm going to do something I don't usually do – start posting a story before I've finished it. I'm hoping it'll get me going again. I hope you don't mind. Uncle Jim now gets involved with the Barkley Sierra mine.

Nora's sister Gabby comes to the Barkley ranch. Will she and Heath find their way to each other, or will her independent spirit get in the way? And who is the mysterious stranger really after? I do not own rights to these characters other than my original ones that I added to the story.

After receiving a letter from a woman in Strawberry, Tom, and Jarrod both ride to the small mining town to hear what the woman has to say, which in her own words may change their lives for ever. Meanwhile a young Heath does his best to help his two aunts out, after his mother's passing, by getting a job in the mines. The same mines that might just kill him.

AU. It's 1870, three months after Tom Barkley's murder. Jarrod is 27 years old, Audra is 14 years old, Eugene is 11. Nick is 23, barely into his role as owner and manager of the Barkley ranch. Then Heath – age 19 – shows up claiming to be Tom Barkley's illegitimate son, and Victoria is marrying Tom's brother Jim.

A visiting relative helps Heath learn more about his family, his father, and forgiveness.

A few weeks after Season One's "The Brawlers," Heath is fed up with Nick's arrogance. Contrite Nick offers to leave home for six months, change his name, and go where no one knows him. He takes little money and dresses as a saddle tramp, intent on learning what it's like to live without money, without the Barkley name, and without his family to fall back on.
