Fuyuki Asao woke up with one hand cuffed to a bedpost. When he turned his head, he saw right away that he was no longer in his bedroom. The walls were of a drab brown, missing the wallpapers and pictures that Fuyuki was accustomed to seeing. The pieces of furniture in the room looked fancy, but bearing nothing but boring old things like vases and ornamental bowls.
"Where the heck am I?"
Fuyuki was sitting on the floor, right by the bedpost. As far as he knew, he had not spotted anyone or anything suspicious near the vicinity of his home. And he was not so stupid as to open the door to any random stranger, and he was a pretty nimble guy, to put it lightly, so he was sure that he could outrun the average criminal in a chase. So how had he managed to be kidnapped? Whoever had managed to do it must have done one heck of a job.
"Oh, man…" he groaned as he tried to move his left hand, but to no avail. "First things first, I have to get rid of this stupid thing first."
He saw a key lying on top of the table next to his bed and figured that it was the key to his handcuffs. Even though the key lay right on the edge of the table, it was impossible to grasp it with his right hand, and the few inches that separated him and the key were ever so taunting. Nor could he stand up and try to reach for it.
Fortunately, as long as the key was close enough in his sight, this was no problem for him.
He looked right at the key and focused.
After a few seconds, the key did what normal people would call "impossible":
It rose into the air.
With some more concentration, Fuyuki moved the key to his right hand, after which he turned the lock, and the handcuffs came off, which he celebrated with a few waves of his hand.
"Heh, easy-peasy!" he said with a smirk. "You've gotta do better than that if you want to trip me up!"
"Puhuhuhu! That was supposed to be the easy part, psychic boy!"
Fuyuki looked around him and immediately stood up, having heard a high-pitched voice come from nowhere. It took him a few seconds to see that there was a speaker placed at one of the top corners of the room.
"Who the heck are you?!" Fuyuki said. "Are you the one who put me in here?!"
"Well, if I weren't, then I wouldn't know what business I have here," the voice replied. Already, Fuyuki found it annoying. "Anyway, that was a small test. I wanted to see whether you could even get yourself out of an easy jam like that. So congrats!"
"Oh, it was a piece of cake," Fuyuki answered, feeling quite flattered before he realized something. "Hey, wait a minute! You know about my psychic power, don't you?"
"Is it supposed to be a secret? Sorry, I didn't catch the memo," the voice said mockingly. "Besides, aren't there more things you should be worried about?"
"Huh? Oh!" Fuyuki nearly started. "Where the heck am I?"
"What, you want me to spill all the details for you? Sorry, but that'd be no fun at all. All things have a proper order, or so I'm told."
"So that's how you're gonna play it, huh? Fine, fine."
Even though he was sure that he had been kidnapped, it did not seem like he was in any real danger, so what was the point of getting all anxious about it?
"What's this room supposed to be, anyway?"
"Oh, it's your guest room."
"Guest room?" Fuyuki scratched the back of his head. "You mean, like, for a mansion?"
"Yep!"
"A mansion… Cool… Wait, I'll be staying here a while?"
"You sure will! In fact, your stay here will be quite... thrilling! Puhuhuhuhu!"
The voice's chortling got on Fuyuki's nerves after a few seconds. He wished that he could tell him to shut up, but he needed answers first.
"It's exciting me, this anticipation of what's coming up! I can't wait to show everyone here what's in store!"
"'Everyone'? There are others besides me?"
"There sure are, psychic boy! You oughta go out there and meet them. Have a nice chat with your fellow guests."
Fuyuki waved his hand carefreely before flicking a fringe of his short, messy light-gray hair. "Sure, if that makes you stop yapping."
He looked down at his clothes and saw that he still had his green jacket, black shirt, and blue pair of shorts on. For someone who had just finished junior high, he was on the shorter end of measurements for average height. And though he was mistaken for an elementary schooler a few times, it had its advantages. There were many places that he could squeeze into whenever he hid, and quite a few girls fawned over him as if he were a small fluffy dog.
In any case, he looked awesome as usual and was ready for action.
"One more thing!" the voice added. "Look at the cupboard by the table. I've left something for you. It's a key item, so you'd better put it in the right section in your inventory!"
"Ooh, really? The way you're saying it, it sounds like an adventure game!"
"Does it make you feel any better if it is one?"
"Well, I sure love games, so it's gotten me pumped up!"
As the voice said, there was something lying on top of the cupboard. It looked like a black tablet.
"Come to me!"
Fuyuki focused his gaze on the tablet, and as soon as he felt a connection, he made it rise and float to his hand.
"Wow. You couldn't even walk a few steps? And here I was thinking I was lazy!"
"Hey, I'm not that lazy. It's just that… I wanted to show off a little bit."
"You wanted to show it off to someone you only know as a disembodied voice?"
Fuyuki shrugged with a carefree smile. "You already know about my power, so it's okay to have you as an audience, right?"
Once the tablet landed on his hand, he swiftly put it in his green jacket.
"What? Not going to check it out?" the voice said, sounding somewhat surprised.
"Nah. My feet are itching to walk on some new ground, anyway."
"Hmm, I see… If you're going to go out now, then you should know this: everyone else here is an Ultimate."
"Whoa, really? Cool!"
He knew full well what Ultimates were. They were high school students who were so skilled at a certain skill that they were recognized for it. If he remembered correctly, Ultimates were a title that some agency had started, but it had caught on with society. Of course, Fuyuki had never been given a Ultimate title, even though he fancied himself to be pretty good at certain things.
"Guess what else, psychic boy? You'll get to have some of that coolness… in name, at least. You see, you're what we call the 'Ultimate Lucky Student'."
Fuyuki stared at the speaker with a confused expression. "What's that? Sounds pretty lame."
"Think of it as a courtesy title. Everyone else here is an Ultimate of some form, so we thought we might as well make you one. Not that it really means anything, but hey, humans are sticklers for consistency."
"Pfft, consistency," he said, rolling his eyes. Well, at least he was not an Unlucky Student. Now that would be a pretty bad omen.
Once he felt that he was ready, he looked around and saw that there were two doors in this room. One led to a bathroom, and the other door must be the way out. He had no need to take a leak right now, so he headed for the exit.
"You're gonna tell the others about your power, right, psychic boy?"
Fuyuki froze as he grabbed the doorknob. "No way! It's supposed to be a secret! I know better than to expose myself."
"Come on, really? That's the boring route! Don't you think it'd be more fun to show off your power?"
"Well, yeah, but 'never show strangers your power' is the one rule I don't wanna break."
The voice growled for a few seconds. "Fine... if that's what you insist, then I'll just sit back and watch as you meet with your fellow guests. And don't worry, I'll be seeing you very soon. Puhuhuhuhuhuhu!"
However grating the voice was, at least he had the decency to know when to keep a secret. Though he wondered what the voice's motives were, he seemed to be no threat, so he figured that it was best to do what he said for now.
With a small but confident smile, Fuyuki turned the knob. "Here I go!"
Hello, everyone! It's not been too long since I finished my last story, and I was interested in writing another SYOC, so here I am! This is a sequel to my previous story, Brightmere Mysteries, since there were a few parts in that story that I'm interested in exploring. As a result, there may be a few things from that story that I may spoil or at least hint at, but rest assured, I'll not spoil the general twists like who killed whom in which cases.
Anyway, let me talk about the story here. As you can see, the story follows Fuyuki Asao, who has a special power. I think that from this short excerpt, you can get a good idea of what his overall personality is like and how he's different from the protagonist of my previous story, if you've read it. Moreover, the story is set in a mysterious mansion. I thought it'd be cool to write something like this since the previous story featured a fairly ordinary protagonist out at sea, so having a special character in a different setting should prove interesting.
Even though this is a sequel to Brightmere Mysteries, it's not necessary that you have read the story if you want to submit a character. The form to fill out is on my profile.
Now here are the rules for submission:
1. Send your submissions through PMs on this website only.
2. You can submit up to four characters. Keep in mind that even if I pick one of your characters, it is not guaranteed that I will include any of your other characters as well, even if the characters are related to each other.
3. Send each character separately. Put the subject line in this format: [Wind, character's full name, talent]. If you have multiple parts for the same character, you simply need to reply to the first part with the next part; there is no need to send the next part in a separate message. I only want separate messages for different characters.
4. The current deadline is April 4, 2025, 11:59 PM (assume that this applies to your timezone). But if you need an extra day or two, please let me know.
5. Your character may have been one that you sent to another SYOC story. In that case, I will gladly consider your character if your character was not accepted by the author. If your character ended up being accepted by the author, but the story later became "abandoned", then please let me know. I will still consider the character, but please mention the story's name so that I can see whether it's reasonable to believe that the story is abandoned.
Here are the rules about the characters themselves (i.e., what you may or may not include):
1. This story has nothing to do with Hope's Peak Academy and the Ultimate Academy, so please make sure not to involve either setting in your characters' profiles!
2. I prefer the characters to be Japanese, but non-Japanese characters are allowed as long as you give a good reason why they are in Japan.
3. The character must be human (so anyone like K1-B0 is out).
4. No supernatural talents are allowed. I mainly don't want supernatural talents explicitly about the mind such as reading minds or manipulating reality with mental powers. However, I will allow talents that involve a vague sixth sense such as having a faint feeling of the presence of ghosts, as well as talents that are about the supernatural, such as a researcher of the supernatural.
5. Talents from the games are allowed (as long as they do not contradict the previous rules), so you are free to send me something like the Ultimate Baseball Star, the Ultimate Musician, or the Ultimate Anthropologist.
6. If your character has a talent that you're not sure is acceptable, then please ask me first.
7. Don't make any assumptions about the killing game's backstory. For example, don't offer any explanations for why the characters are trapped in a mansion or what happened to the world, since those parts of the setting are supposed to be a mystery.
8. Be reasonable with the scale of events in your characters' history. While Danganronpa has always been ridiculous to some extent, it generally doesn't go too far. For example, don't involve stuff like a character somehow destroying the moon in his backstory.
9. No crossovers with other franchises. Please don't tie your character's backstory to a character from another franchise.
I may contact you if I have questions about your submissions. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
I will update this chapter frequently as submissions come in, so you can see what kinds of talents have been sent in so far. Until the submission period is over, any new "chapters" will be status updates on what kinds of characters I would like to see more. I will only finalize the cast once the submission period is over.
