Chapter 1
15-year-old Matthew McGuire walked toward the principal's office. There was only a week left of school before summer break. He wasn't nervous but confused as to why he was being called in. Ever since his two friends left at the end of 8th grade, Lanny and his family moved to Colorado for his dads' job, and Melina was sent to military school after her last fight, he hadn't gotten into any trouble. In fact, he spent most of his time actually doing his schoolwork. Turned out, once he applied himself, he discovered the work wasn't too bad. In fact, it was really easy for him. His teachers all loved him and told him more than once how far ahead he was from his classmates.
He arrived at the office and the secretary buzzed the principal, Ms. Ungermeyer, to let her know he was here. "You can head in Matt." He thanked her and walked into the office. "You can shut the door Mr. McGuire." The principal said as he walked in. "I am sure you are wondering why you were called down here." "Yes ma'am." Matt answered. She indicated he should sit down in the chair on the opposite side of her desk. As he lowered himself into the seat, she pulled out a folder with his name on it. She opened the file. "Let me ask you, do you have a hard time focusing in class and on your work?" Matt shrugged nervously. Wondering if he was in trouble for spacing off too much. "I don't try to not pay attention. I just get bored quickly. I usually finish my stuff quick and get my homework done in class." "I spoke with your teachers and have pulled together your grades for the year. All your teachers spoke very highly of you and your work. I am sure you recall taking a test last month, correct?" He nodded. "Yes." He and a few other students had taken an IQ test several weeks back and for some reason, the school had him retake it again a couple weeks ago. He hadn't really thought about it. "Well, the scores came back, and they show you received the same score on both." "I'm confused. "Am I in trouble for something here? Did I get a bad score?" "Oh, on the contrary Mr. McGuire. You scored very well. In fact, that is why we wanted you to take the test the 2nd time. To make sure there were no mistakes. Both tests show you have an IQ of 117 which is quite impressive." Once Matt knew he wasn't in trouble, he relaxed a little more. "Oh, um Thanks." He replied, unsure of what was coming.
"We at Hillridge high don't ever want a student's abilities to be restrained because they are not challenged enough. You are one of those students who need to be challenged in order to not hold you back from great achievements. On that note, your teachers all have spoken, and I am inclined to agree with them, that you would benefit if you were to begin as a junior in the fall instead of as a sophomore. I realize this is a big decision and one you should think about and of course it is one your parents must have the final say on. Now I can call them, or you can speak with them yourself. What would you rather?" "Is it ok if I think about it first and then I will talk to them?" "Of course. With it being Friday, and next week being the last week of school, you can take the time to think about it. I expect an answer no later than 5pm next Friday."
She handed him a paper. "Ok." Matt stood up. "Thank you. I will let you know." "Thank you, Mr. McGuire. You can go. Enjoy your weekend." "Thank you, Ma'am. You too."
