A/N: Hey everyone! Welcome to Digimon TCG: X-Fighters! Needless to say this fic has been a LONG time coming, being planned out since the end of Transcendent Bonds and the Princess of Omnia (Omnian War took 6 months longer to get through than I expected; I was hoping to keep the yearly tradition but it didn't happen unfortunately.) All that said, I hope for myself and you guys, it was worth the wait. Once more thanks for the several years of support and without further ado...

This is Digimon TCG: X-Fighters...

[Central District, Omnia, Eight Months Ago…]

Tightening muscles, a ring in his ears, and blurred vision were what took over Milo's senses as he came to. If he didn't know better, he'd have thought he just survived an airstrike. A groan came from overhead, and though it hurt to lift his neck, he could tell what—or rather from whom —it came.

"Herissmon…" Milo made out. "Are you okay?"

Herissmon, a hedgehog resembling Digimon, stuck a claw up in place of a thumbs up. Milo couldn't see it, but he figured if he could hear him, then he would be somewhat okay.

"MILO!" The voice of Mason, his brother, rung out. Moments later he could feel a heavy grip roll him on his back and lift him, which prompted him to try to see. Mason, along with his two companions, Adara and Lucas crowded around him.

"Hey…" Milo made out. "Glad to see…" he sat up with some help, "…you guys are alright."

"Same." Mason said, his voice softer than usual.

"Sir, communications are back online. The interference is cleared." Adara explained.

He turned to the pair beside him, "Join the AEGIS agents and search the perimeter where Ordinemon's Miasma covered. Any X-Streamers you find, force eject them; AEGIS is onsite to recover them when they make the jump back."

"Understood." They saluted.

"And once you're done, you two are dismissed." He added.

"Dismissed?" Lucas repeated. "Uh, shouldn't we see how all this wraps up?"

"You have." Mason stated, grabbing Milo's attention and pulling the latter further into full consciousness. "The fight is over. Ordinemon's gone. We won."

"Ordinemon's…" Milo uttered. "Don't tell me that…!" Milo forced himself on his feet, the shock of standing crippling him back onto his knees.

"Don't move!" Mason instructed sternly. "Give yourself time for your body to catch up with everything."

"Where's Kaden, is he alright?! Or Raelyn?! Did they both make it out?!" Milo was panicking.

"Kaden's fine, Milo…" A voice came through his com, one that instantly calmed him down.

"Sierra…" Milo smiled involuntarily. "Thank goodness," he looked around. "For a second I was afraid that—oh no…" his voice dropped upon seeing the sight of Kaden approaching.

Kaden dragged his feet in the dirt, cradling a girl in his arms bridal style. She looked lifeless, whereas Kaden looked as if he was moving on willpower alone. Milo's throat grew tight, as the sliver of hope that Kaden made him believe back then was snuffed before his eyes.

Kaden himself collapsed from the weight, prompting Milo and the others to swarm him. When they reached him, he was cradling the girl, crying into her shoulder. It tore Milo up to watch, feelings of guilt coming over him as well. His feelings of jealousy way back when played a factor in the moment they were in, only made worse when he did everything in his power to fix it.

Kaden was innocent in this. The blood of all the lives lost in this conflict were on his hands.

Mason said this was a victory...?

...victory tasted bitter.

Chapter 1: Stars of Trinity Part 1

[Manhattan, New York City, Present Day...]

"Alright everyone, few reminders!" Mr. Cohen, the Global History teacher, said to his students before dismissing the eager teens. "June 14th to the 26th is Regents week! So that means unless you have a Regents to take, don't show your faces here, understand?"

Some of the teens chuckled, used to their teacher's sense of humor. Milo, who sat in the middle of the class watched from the window as some students already began making their way out of the building.

From among them, Kaden Grant.

"Global History Regents is on Thursday morning at 10 AM sharp. For those taking it, be sure to bring your pencils and scantrons; booklets will be provided for the written portions. Also remember: no food is allowed within the testing room, so best scarf your bacon egg and cheese down before you set foot in the building." Mr. Cohen scanned the room, noticing Milo focused on the outside world. "I'm almost done Mr. Richardson, if you can wait 30 more seconds."

Milo almost didn't catch his quip, but he turned around anyway. "Huh?"

"Nothing, just making sure you heard what I said." Mr. Cohen replied. "Right so, 10 AM GH regents, no food, no electronics, just a pencil and scantron. That said, the official last day of class is the 28th, where you'll pick up your report cards. All clear?" He scanned the room. "Alright Mr. Richardson, get out of here and enjoy your summer off. Same goes for the rest of you."

With the green light the crowd scrambled out the classroom, eager to get a head start on their early summer vacation. Milo tried his best to get ahead of the crowd in an attempt to catch Kaden before he disappeared on him. It's been a trial to reach him recently, and after this, there was no telling if he'd have another shot.

Making his way out of the building, Milo looked around and scanned the area, searching desperately for a head of blonde hair. There were several blonde heads but none that belonged to him. Was he working today? he thought. He wasn't sure. Texts were left on read, calls were eventually sent to voicemail, it's clear that Kaden was actively avoiding him; has been since the term started at the end of January.

From the moment Project X-Stream began, up until the end of Spring Break, Kaden spent his school hours doing virtual learning. It was a shock to the whole school to see the resident Knight of CS High make his return, but equally surprising to see how much he changed in that time. On the surface, he seemed like his usual self, though it was easy to tell that part of him was disconnected from everyone. On that same token, Riley Ocasio was nowhere to be seen, and neither was Nico Woods, two people aside from Milo that Kaden was regularly seen with.

Speculations and rumors sprouted in the time that he was gone. Some were harmless, others distasteful in nature. Granted this school year, CS High was rocked with the disappearance of a beloved math teacher Mr. Dawson, resident bully Barry Marshall, and the tragic passing of Principal Marissa Richardson—Milo's mother. And then, on the social side of things, the critically acclaimed social space, Omnia, which became the main hub for Digimon TCG V-Streamers, shut down not long afterward, followed by the collapse of STREAM Corp.

In the months that passed, Babylon, SAIBA Enterprises flagship Hubspace regained popularity once more, prompting SAIBA Enterprise to expand on the platform and upgrade it to maintain the relations between consumers and investors. The recent Exhibition match here in NYC, as well as the announcement of tournament season beginning the first weekend in July, hopes to draw new and returning players from all over.

Milo himself, in an effort to try and move forward, took to Babylon and has made a small name for himself. Of course, another reason for this drive was to see if he could find Kaden. As it turned out, rumors of his retirement proved true, adding a layer of difficulty of reaching him. And with graduation on the horizon, what's to say that starting July 1st, he won't just disappear entirely?

"Yo Milo!" a voice called out, snapping Milo out of his deep thought. He turned and saw some fellow classmates waving at him.

"Hey," he gave a wave.

"Looking for Kaden?" one of them asked curiously.

Milo didn't deny it, nodding. "Have you seen what direction he went?"

They pointed in the direction of the train station. That meant he was likely heading to work.

"Awesome, thanks!" Milo leapt off the steps and raced off, shoving through people apologetically as he did. Seeing Kaden in the distance several blocks down, Milo ran as fast as he could. The physical exercises Mason had him do in recent months were beginning to show their worth as he maintained his speed. Still, he could see Kaden going down the stairs into the train station, motivating him to pick up the pace. "Kaden!"

Milo's anxiety spiked as the sound of the train screeched as it pulled into the station. He took a chance and hopped the turnstile, not bothering to see if any police officers were tailing him. He dodged people coming up the stairs and forced himself through the uphill current. People's remarks and bothered grunts were just disregarded noise. "Kaden!"

A blonde head bopped up at the sound of the name, just as it took a step into the train car. As Kaden turned, Milo's hands were latched onto his wrist, and he was yanked back, nearly falling on top of the freshman. Students and regular commuters threw passing glances at them as they stuffed themselves into the full train car. The doors closed and rode off afterward into the dark tunnel ahead, leaving a surprised Kaden and exhausted Milo at the station.

"Finally...got a hold of you..." Milo said in between breaths, while giving Kaden a certain look.

Kaden smiled nervously. "Been a while...hasn't it?"

Minutes later the pair were exiting a nearby bodega, Milo chugging a red Gatorade to revive himself while Kaden treated himself to a blue ice pop. It was noticeably warmer out, to the point that rain was likely later in the week. As a freshman, Milo only had the biology regents to worry about that Wednesday. Some of his classmates opted to take the Global History regents to avoid doing it in Sophomore year and while he did plan to take it now, there was a change in plans...

...plans that Kaden needed to hear sooner rather than later.

"So... it's been a while," Kaden said, tearing open his ice pop. "How you've been?"

"Oh, you know, taking things day by day..." Milo answered.

"Yeah, same..."

"...you were on your way to work?"

"Uh—yeah. Sierra asked if I could come in early since it's a half day and well..."

"My bad," Milo apologized. "Didn't mean to make you late."

"It's fine," Kaden leaned over the railing of the stairway leading down into the station. "The store is usually dead during the morning anyway."

"Gotcha," Milo said, leaning back on the railing himself. The conversation was as awkward as Milo expected, if not worse. "Rae DM'd me the other day…"

Milo heard Kaden's teeth sink into his ice pop. Bringing up Rae like this probably made things more uncomfortable but he needed a segue. "She's fine, she said. She's been doing a form of homeschooling during her stay at AEGIS and the Director helped her enroll in Riverbed Academy for Senior Year. She says the headmaster there is a good friend of the Director, so she was warmly accepted in.

"Wow…" Kaden uttered. "I'm glad to hear that she's able to move forward after everything…"

Milo looked at Kaden to see what his expression looked like. Kaden seemed to be distancing himself, losing himself in thought.

It was so unlike him.

"How have you been doing since then?"

"Me?" Kaden asked. "I've been okay…I've had to take a break from Digimon to prep for life after graduation. Like, I planned to do a bit of college and join the police academy but…I don't know what I wanna do career-wise right now. I guess you could say I'm a bit lost, or in a rut or something."

"You still haven't—!"

"No, I haven't recovered." Kaden answered. He bit a chunk off his ice pop and endured a brain freeze before continuing, "Rae eventually stopped trying to start a conversation with me, Therapy was a waste of time and worst of all…I've pushed everyone away. I just…can't bring myself to check up on anyone. I'm constantly questioning if I stopped caring at all.

"Yeah…I've noticed." Milo said aloud.

Hearing that only made Kaden regress.

"I—I didn't mean…" Milo quickly tried to recover. "I get what you're going through. The idea that I was responsible for my mom dying tore me apart inside. But…Riley supported me."

"You lied to her though," Kaden reminded sharply.

"I did." Milo admitted. "Then I tried to fix it and made it worse."

"And then all hell broke loose. In the end, I lost."

"Right…" Milo sighed and leaned off the railing. "I was going to say that if I'd actually taken Riley's support for what it was then things might've been different. Now, I'm paying for it."

Kaden hesitated to speak as Milo looked at him. "My brother…he's been in Riverbed, working with AEGIS on something and…after talking with my sister about our situation…"

Hearing Milo's tone filled Kaden with harsh dread. He didn't want Milo to finish the sentence—not after what he just said.

"It's hard to maintain a life here, at least for now."

"So…you're moving?" Kaden's throat tightened.

Milo swallowed. "I wanted to tell you sooner but—!"

"I…I'm sorry…!" Kaden felt a tear come down his face. "I'm so sorry man…"

Milo felt his emotions creep on him in that moment. Hearing Kaden break down made it hard to resist not doing the same. "Moving day is the end of this month, on the 25th..."

"That's...the day before Graduation…" Kaden replied, devastation taking a firm grip of him.

Milo nodded reluctantly.

"…Damn."

"…yeah."

"WHAT?!" Thirteen-Year-Old Terrence Williams bounced in the air, his dreads bouncing with him. "Your cousin is THE Cobalius?!"

"Yeah…?" Maxine said, rubbing her ear. "Is it really that serious that you had to scream in my ear?"

Daniel, their friend side-eyed the rest of the train car, some people giving them looks from a distance. Personally, he'd have waited to drop that nugget of info, but it's too late for that. Terrence knows.

Daniel leaned forward to meet the gleam in Terrence eyes. "He retired, didn't he?"

"Yeah apparently. When I asked him, he kept dodging the question. When he said that little kid the other day, he really tried not to break his heart."

"Dang," Terrence said. "Why do you think he retired?"

"When STREAM Corp shut down the Omnia Server, a lot of people dropped the game altogether. Even with the updates to the Babylon Server, I'd say only a fraction of returning players actually came back."

"Babylon? Omnia?" Terrence tilted his head. "What are those?"

Daniel's gaze narrowed, "I thought you were the expert here."

"Well, it's not like I know EVERYTHING!" Terrence exclaimed. "My parents were scared I'd meet creeps and hackers on those things, so I never got a chance to get into them. But since I'm going to High School, they're being a bit more lenient."

"Speaking of creeps," Maxine spoke up, "What was with that dude you were sitting next to? He was acting a bit too friendly."

Daniel looked at Terrence, the latter looking back curiously. "I think I have an idea, but I'll wait until we get to our stop."

"What? Why hold us in suspense?!" Terrence cried.

"Speaking of stops…" Maxine looked at both boys, "I told you two I wasn't going straight home from school, so why are you tagging along again?"

Terrence grinned, "Danny said you're going to TCG Towers in Times Square, right?"

"…yeah?" Maxine side-eyed Daniel.

"And what do I have on me, and they have over there?" Terrence's grin grew wider.

"…what?"

"I got graduation gift money. They have Digimon Cards." Terrence answered.

Maxine scoffed, "Good luck with that, my cousin said that the Exhibition Match over the weekend went over so well that their stock of Starter Decks were cleaned out."

A gasp from Terrence made Maxine realize her folly.

"I GET TO MEET COBALI—!" Danny and Maxine covered Terrence mouth to avoid another outburst.

"Chill or they'll kick us off before we even make it to midtown!" She hissed.

"But isn't this 28th street?" Terrence muffled response came through her hand. "We still have two stops before—!"

"That's my point!" Maxine snapped.

Daniel and Maxine pulled back to avoid drawing more eyes to them.

"Where do you get your enthusiasm from dude?" Daniel asked.

"What? Aren't you excited to meet him?"

"Clearly not as much as you—or at all even."

Terrence shrugged and quietly mused at the idea of meeting a Digimon TCG streamer. Daniel and Maxine both sighed and also prayed the following ten minutes it'd take to get to the store would shoot by…

Milo's moving…

First Syl, then Riley, Nico, and now him…

He wished Veemon was here still, that way someone would still be by his side.

"Kaden?" A voice snapped him out of his deep thought. He turned and saw the brunette staring at him from the counter. "Yeah, Sierra?"

"You've had that same look on your face since you walked in earlier." Sierra leaned against the counter. "Do you need a moment to talk?"

"…No, I'm good. Sorry." He surveyed the area to ensure everything is straight. "Actually, I have a question."

Sierra sat up as Kaden came back to the counter. "What is it?"

Kaden's mind was clouded by Milo and the others, posing a distraction from his question. He tried his best to dismiss the intrusive thoughts so he could put the question out there. "When you graduated from High School, what was going through your mind?"

"What was going through my mind?" Sierra thought about it. "I guess, I was a bit anxious, y'know considering how the day you graduate is the start of adulthood. Everyone was going their separate ways, heading out of state for school for the most part. It was definitely scary, but also exciting."

"That makes sense..."

"Is that how you're feeling?" She asked.

Kaden took a moment to answer. "Honestly...I'm not excited at all. I'm more scared than anything."

"Scared of...growing up?"

"Scared of being alone when it happens." He admitted, swallowing his emotions. "Milo said he and his sister are moving to be closer to their brother while he works with AEGIS."

"Right..." She spoke. "That makes sense, considering that AEGIS took over monitoring Omnia in the aftermath."

"Do you plan on leaving to?" Kaden asked.

Sierra shook her head. "There's no reason to remember? The Sovereign Four don't exist anymore."

"Right..."

"Are you ever going to come out of retirement? I'm sure Veemon misses you..."

"It reminds me too much of what I couldn't do..."

"...I see." Sierra sighed. "If Riley was here-and Syl for that matter-they'd be pretty annoyed with you."

"Well, it's a good thing neither of them are here to judge me."

Sierra crossed her arms, studying Kaden as he powered down and let his thoughts swallow him. She saw a small group approaching the doorway and she smiled, "Hey Max, how are you today?"

"Hi Ms. Levan, hey Kaden." Maxine walked into the store. Daniel and Terrence trailed behind, and Terrence could hardly contain his excitement. The displays, the consoles, and the general atmosphere filled him with so much dopamine that Daniel had to hold him steady. Terrence hooked around Daniel's neck and bounced.

"This place is so amazing!" Terrence exclaimed. He turned his head and saw Kaden as the latter looked up. "HOLY MOLY ITS COBALIUS!"

Kaden was startled as Terrence sped to the counter. "Uh...friends of yours Max?"

Maxine yanked Terrence back. "Unfortunately."

"My name is Daniel Xiao, pleasure." Daniel approached as Maxine dragged Terrence back.

"Hm, polite." Sierra smiled.

"And my names Terrence, but everyone calls me Terry." Terrence broke free.

"Good to know." Sierra found herself humored at this point. "So, how may I help you three?"

"Max's parents are working late so I'm gonna take her home when I get off work." Kaden explained.

"Okay that settles her, what about you two? Haven't seen your faces around so naturally I'm curious."

"Ahem," Terrence cleared his throat. "Do you guys have Digimon Cards?"

"We do. Anything in particular?"

"He's looking for the new starter decks. Remember you told me they sold out after the Exhibition Match?" Maxine remembered.

"Yeah, and unfortunately we didn't get our delivery yet, so we'll be out of them until that shows up." Kaden replied.

"Unless..." Sierra smirked.

Kaden turned, "Unless what?"

"What if I were to say a certain Pro Tamer had already purchased one of each deck for a certain trio?"

"Huh?" Kaden furrowed his brow.

"Trio?" Daniel repeated. He pondered the thought for a second. "A Pro...? Wait a sec...!"

"What's up?" Maxine asked.

"That guy from the match! It was him!" Daniel exclaimed.

"I knew It!" Terrence exclaimed as well. "He was an undercover pro!"

"Not just any pro, but Trevor McKnight himself!"

Sierra saw Kaden jump up from the corner of her eye.

"Time out, since when did you know Trevor McKnight?!"

Sierra stood proud, "I'm the former Eastern Representative, Lady Azurena. I have my connections..."

"'Lady Azurena?'" Maxine repeated.

"One of the Sovereign Four, STREAM Corps Elite Pro tamers when Omnia was still a thing. They were said to lead factions in specific districts with users joining them like PVP clans... what?"

"Why do you know all of this?!"

"Doesn't matter how he knows!" Terrence interrupted. "If Mr. McKnight bought the decks for us then where is he? Where are they?"

"I'm up here!" A voice called from the balcony above. They all looked up and saw the man waving at them, his sunglasses tucked on his shirt collar.

"It's him!" Terrence exclaimed.

"How did I miss him walking in?" Kaden asked, just as surprised.

"He walked in thirty minutes ago. You were so busy moping to notice I guess." Sierra explained.

"There's no way I'd miss that though!" Kaden stated. "Trevor McKnight was one of my favorite Tamers. I wanted to be like him, so I started playing Imperialdramon as a deck type."

"Wow that's a throwback," Trevor said as he came downstairs. "That was back when I was experimenting with decks outside of Garurumon builds." He reached the main lobby and approached the counter. "What's up?"

"I-it's an honor!" Kaden shook his hand. Sierra smiled, seeing Kaden's demeanor do an about-face.

"Cool...two Digimon celebrities in one place?!" Terrence danced. "And Ms. Levan said you bought us starter decks?!"

"That I did." Trevor answered. "I figured after seeing how enthusiastic you were, and how quick they were selling, I wanted to make sure you guys got your copies."

"Awesome! Right guys?" Terrence turned to Daniel and Maxine, the latter feeling the spotlight on them. They nervously nodded and went along with it, knowing the consequences of saying otherwise.

In the meantime, Sierra opened a drawer on the other side of the counter and pulled out the three boxes, sliding them on the counter. "Here you are, the Red, Blue and Green Trinity Starter Decks as requested. Take your pick you three.

"Dibs on red!" Terrence dashed. Daniel and Maxine walked over and sidestepped the giddy Terrence who was enamored by the illustrations on the box. On one side of it was the titular character from a commercial he watched, and on the other side was Gammamon, a bipedal Triceratops digimon wearing a blue scarf around its neck. They both were posing on the front of the box, the plastic window in the middle displaying the boss card on the inside of it. It was the illustration of an aggressive white and red dragon with neon-blue highlights traced along its body.

Meanwhile Daniel and Maxine looked at the remaining blue and green decks; Blue having a timid-looking character and Jellymon, a Jellyfish girl digimon, the boss monster resembling a cybernetically enhanced Jellyfish woman, and the green deck had a cool looking girl and Angoramon, a large rabbit digimon whose ears were tied like a ponytail. The boss monster of the deck was a hyper aggressive beast-like Digimon, best described as a wererabbit.

"Guess I'll go with green—huh?!" Daniel gasped as Maxine snatched it away.

"Nuh-uh I want the cool looking girl deck. You can take the nerd one."

Daniel glared. "You sure this won't hurt what little street cred you have?"

Maxine scoffed, "Once people find out I'm cousins with Cobalius, I'm gonna run that school, right?"

Kaden perked up. "I plead the fifth."

Maxine rolled her eyes. "Whatever."

Trevor grinned, and watched for a minute as the trio cracked open the decks and skimmed the cards. He was reminded of his younger years when he and his best friends Adam and Megan used to play. Well actually, it was him and Megan who played; it took them to be Sophomores in High School for Adam to start playing. If anything, Terrence reminds him of that annoying ten-year-old during the Beta Tests at SAIBA Enterprise...

Maybe that's what drew him to them.

"So, uh..." Terrance started. "Can one of you teach us how to play?"

"Oh, right um..." Sierra looked to the other two.

"I don't play anymore, remember?" Kaden reminded.

"Mr. McKnight?" Terrence turned.

"Yeah, of course, that's no trouble. Besides, I wanted to see for myself how NYC's tamers stack up to the usuals back home. Doesn't hurt to get some practice in with the fresh blood before the big shots show."

"Dang, we haven't even played the game and you're trash talking us minors? Real sportsman like." Maxine pointed out.

Trevor scoffed, "I heard way worse at your age, trust me. Besides, the more trash talk the harder the loss, right?" He led Terry to an open terminal and logged in on his end. Afterward he took a physical deck out and set it on the console.

"Been a while since I've seen physical cards." Kaden commented.

"Is it that unusual?" Maxine asked as Terry followed Trevor's instructions on setting up.

"It's just that D-Streamers are used to house Decklist data among other things. The device uses holographic technology to project cards and models of the Digimon." Sierra explained. "Of course, those who are starting out may not be able to buy a D-Streamer, so they stick with the physical product and when they do get a D-Streamer device, they can upload their deck onto the device to be used in Babylon."

"Uh-huh…" she nodded, only getting some of that.

"You ready?" Trevor asked.

Terrence smiled, looking at his board state. The white cards off to the left, the blue cards to the right, the five security cards set… each moment was more exciting than the next, and he wanted it to be known. "Bring it on!"

Trevor nodded. "On the count of three…One, two…three!"

DIGI-GATE: OPEN!

Turn 1: Trevor

"I'll start by hatching DemiVeemon!" Trevor began, flipping a card from his Digi-Egg deck over. In the terminal materialized a baby dragon-like creature with big red eyes and a happy smile, using its tiny arms and feet to bounce about.

DemiVeemon (ST8-01)

Color: Blue

Level: 2

"DemiVeemon digivolves into Gabumon, then I play Gomamon from my hand to end my turn."

Trevor played the cards one by one, first turning his small dragon into a pelt-wearing bipedal yellow reptile with a strong appearance of a blue-striped wolf, and in the Battle Area, a purple spotted sea lion-like digimon with an orange Mohawk running down from its head to its neck. Both looked eager to fight, judging by their positive, determined expressions.

Turn 2: Terrence

"Cool!" Terrence squealed. "Okay, my turn! I hatch!" He flipped the card over, revealing Gurimon. The white triceratops-looking creature came to life and bounced on Terrence side, causing him to lean in hard on the glass dome.

Gurimon (BT8-001)

Color: Red

Level: 2

"Next...I will digivolve it into Gammamon!" Terrence picked a card from his hand and set it on top. "Like that, right?"

Gurimon bounced high, and binary encircled it, reforming it and giving it limbs to stand on, along with the blue scarf around its neck. Gammamon turned and gave a thumbs up, elating Terrence.

Gammamon (BT8-008)

Color: Red

Level: 3

DP: 2000

"Not bad." Trevor noted. "Don't forget to draw for digivolving."

"Right." Terrence did as he was told and studied the drawn card. "Shoutmon...3 cost, huh?"

"You have 3 Memory so if you play that, you'll still have a chance to do something else before it passes turn."

Terrence nodded. "Got it! In that case take that! I play Shoutmon, and also Guilmon!"

Ahead of Gammamon A pair of red dragon-like digimon were summoned, Shoutmon having a more cartoonish appearance, red body with a white underside and claws, looking similar to gloves and shoes. Around its head were a pair of green headphones and he was armed with a mic stand.

Guilmon looked more like a traditional bipedal dragon, or even a dinosaur, small wing-like ears on the back of its head, along with black markings across its red body. Said markings had a unique design, similar in nature to a biohazard symbol.

Turn 3: Trevor

"Good," Trevor commented as he drew. "Now that you have the basics down..." he moved Gabumon forward, "It's time to begin your second lesson. Gomamon digivolves into Leomon!"

Gomamon embraced the blue binary and transformed, becoming a literal lion man wearing leather pants with a combat knife strapped on its backside. On its wrists were black straps and around its neck it wore a red necklace.

Leomon (EX2-017)

"Whoa, he looks tough!" Terrence pointed out.

"He is. But I'm tougher." Trevor took a card and played It. "I play the Option Card Ice Wall."

In the battle area, a streak of ice skated between both sides, and following that, a wall rose from it, blocking Terrence's digimon from crossing.

MEMORY

1-0

"What the heck?" Terrence questioned.

"Careful. Until the end of your turn, your Digimon make you lose two memory each time you attack." Trevor explained. "I'll end by playing the Tamer Thomas H Nordstein."

"A Tamer?" Terrence questioned as a blonde-haired boy, wearing an olive vest and blue tie materialized on Trevor's side.

Thomas H. Nordstein (BT4-093)

Color: Blue

MEMORY

0-3 (Turn Change)

"Every digimon needs a Tamer by their side, right? When played, Thomas allows me to draw a card from my deck." Trevor drew. "The turn passes to you."

Turn 4: Terrence

Terrence drew and pondered his next move. Daniel decided to chip in. "Maybe it'd be smart if you just digivolves and make your Digimon stronger."

"I could..." Terrence thought. "Or I can spend the memory and attack!"

"There's literally no benefit to—!"

"Too late, I decided!" Terrence exclaimed. "Gammamon, move out! Guilmon, attack his Security! Yeah, I'll lose two memory, but at least I get to draw a card!"

MEMORY

3-1

Trevor, humored by Terrence's brute force approach, reached toward Leomon as Guilmon charged red flames in its jaws. "You should've listened."

Terrence was taken aback as Trevor twisted Leomon's card in response. Leomon leapt into the air and dove down on Guilmon, the red dragon having to cut its attack short to chomp onto Leomon's drawn blade.

Guilmon: 2000

Leomon: 4000

As hard as Guilmon struggled, Leomon mustered strength in its free arm and slammed Guilmon into releasing the blade. Leomon then ran the blade through, cutting Guilmon down into binary.

"Huh?!" Terrence exclaimed. "How did he do that?!"

"Its thanks to an effect he has called 'blocker.'" Trevor explained. "As long as I have a Tamer in play, he gains it."

"So how do I get rid of the Tamer?"

"That's the neat part about it...you don't." Trevor answered.

"Oh yeah?" Terrence growled. "Well then, see how you like this! Gammamon, Digivolve into BetelGammamon!"

Gammamon in the battle area roared as red binary infused with it. Flames erupted in a circle and covered it, transforming Terrence's digimon into a more dragonoid-like form, its small white body becoming a tall, lean, fiery red, its scarf tattering around the edges. Fire ignited around its claws while it punched the air and growled.

"Well, that did a fat load of good." Maxine commented.

"I mean he did make his digimon stronger, to keep Leomon from taking it out so..." Trevor defended.

That's when Terrence wagged his finger. "Tsk tsk, I thought you were a pro. Don't you know what BetelGammamon can do?"

Maxine questioned what Terrence meant, and gasped when he reached for the card. "Isn't your turn over?"

"You said it yourself; the turn doesn't switch until all effects are resolved!" Terrence exclaimed, twisting the card. "BetelGammamon's Blitz allows it to attack even after the Memory passes over! Go, take out Leomon!"

BetelGammamon: 6000 DP

Leomon: 4000 DP

BetelGammamon aimed its claws towards the floor and fired, taking off like a rocket. Airborne, BetelGammamon somersaulted and performed an axe kick, to which Leomon blocked. Leomon deflected BetelGammamon and as the latter flipped back, it pulled its fist back, aimed its other claw behind it, and ignited both, BetelGammamon shooting towards the ground, the impact sending flaming shockwaves that contacted the surprised Leomon, as well as Gabumon who stood beside it.

"Huh?!" Maxine blinked. "How did he take out both?"

Terrence smiled. "Gammamon's Inheritable Effect: If my Digimon has 6000 or more DP, then the effect deletes one of my opponents digimon with 3000 DP or less. Gurimon also lets me draw for the same condition."

"Not bad, not bad at all..." Trevor also drew to Terrence's surprise. "Leomon also has a trick up his sleeve too. When he's deleted, I draw a card and gain +2 Memory."

MEMORY

"Five Memory?!" Terrence gasped in shock.

"What'd you expect?" Daniel pointed. "Showing off is a sure-fire way to lose a game."

"Actually, it's six memory. Gomamon's IE effect gives me a memory when my digimon is deleted." Trevor mentioned. "Hate to say it, but that's the price for being greedy."

Turn 5: Trevor

"That's not helping!" Terrence spat.

"Of course it is. It's helping me." Trevor drew. "I hatch DemiVeemon and Digivolve it into Gaomon."

On Trevor's side, a bipedal blue wolf cub with boxing gloves and a bandana around its head materialized, punching the air as if prepping to box.

Gaomon (BT4-021)

"Gaomon digivolves into Gaogamon, then I play another Gabumon and I Digivolve that into Garurumon." Trevor continued, playing and drawing for each digivolution made. In the process, Gaomon embraced the binary code, getting on all fours and transforming into a fully formed wolf, its boxing gloves growing claws, while its hind legs were taped with boxer tape. It's bandana was replaced with two red feelers that extended out of the pelt around its neck.

Meanwhile Gabumon re-materialized, and then also embraced the blue binary code, transforming into a wolf digimon of its own, being a silverish-white color with blue stripes going across its body.

Turn 6: Terrence

Trevor's board was growing increasingly intimidating. Terrence felt compelled to continue to be aggressive, yet the fear of being impulsive and getting punished again lurked a bit.

Will you answer the call…?

Terrence hesitated and looked to his friends. "Did you guys…?"

"What's up?" Daniel asked.

Terrence shook his head. "Nothing, just thought I heard something."

Trevor's gaze narrowed slightly. "Nervous about losing?"

Terrence turned back to his opponent with a smirk. "Of course not! This keeps getting exciting!"

"Good. Digimon is supposed to be exciting." Trevor agreed.

Terrence nodded and placed his hand on the deck. The voice in his head reverberated once more, "Will you answer the call, young boy?"

Terrence took a deep breath and swiped the card from the deck forcefully. While his friends, Sierra and Kaden took note of his demonstration as a very anime-esque gesture, Trevor remained homed in on it.

"I promise you!" Terrence began, "I'll be the strongest Tamer ever, and no one will be able to stop me!" He flipped the drawn card over. "Flaming Memory Boost gives BetelGammamon Security Attack +1 for the turn!"

MEMORY

Growing empowered, flames erupted and danced around BetelGammamon in the battle area.

"Go! Double Security Attack!" Terrence exclaimed, with BetelGammamon blasting off to the point of vanishing. Appearing past WereGarurumon, BetelGammamon unleashed a massive torrent of flames onto Trevor's appearing Security.

Trevor

Security: 5-4

The first card revealed…

"Security Trigger! Davis Motomiya to the battle area!" Trevor declared, summoning a brown-haired boy with goggles and a flame-decaled jacket.

Davis Motomiya (BT3-093)

Color: Blue

"When Davis enters play, I reveal the top 3 cards of my deck and I then retrieve one blue and one green digimon from among them." Trevor explained, revealing the top 3 cards: Metal Storm, Gomamon and MetalGarurumon. "I'll retrieve MetalGarurumon and send the rest to the bottom of my deck."

With the green light, BetelGammamon tore through the second…

Trevor

Security: 4-3

"Security Trigger!" He exclaimed to everyone else's shock as Bulucomon, a mini blue ice dragon retaliated.

BetelGammamon: 6000 DP

Bulucomon: 2000 DP

The tiny dragon shouted a blast of ice and frost at BetelGammamon; however, its flames were too great to be extinguished. Bulucomon, since it stood no chance, wisely backed off.

"Bulucomon lets me draw 2 cards and is added to my hand afterward." He drew two, and Bulucomon vanished into his hand, giving him a total of 10 cards in hand.

"That's it?" Terrence scoffed. "Shoutmon, Security Attack!"

Shoutmon nodded, running across the field, dragging its mic stand to light it on fire with BetelGammamon's flames. Lunging into the air, Shoutmon swung and smashed another Security on Trevor's side.

Trevor

Security: 3-2

"MachGaogamon with 7000 DP!" Trevor revealed.

Shoutmon: 2000 DP

MachGaogamon: 7000 DP

A cybernetic wolf digimon flew out of the Security with jet-like wings and slammed Shoutmon away with one punch of its metal fist. Shoutmon flew back to Terrence's side and dispersed upon crashing.

"Now, BetelGammamon, digivolve into the shooting star that lights the night with sapphire flames!" Terrence recited. "Canoweissmon!"

BetelGammamon roared as remnant embers drew back to it and mixed with the appearing binary code. The flames grew red and in size, as soon after that white and red dragon emerged, announcing its arrival with a dominant roar.

Turn 7: Trevor

Trevor drew and moved Gaogamon forward. "As much as I want to praise how much of a fast learner, you're turning out to be... from here on out I'm not holding back."

Trevor's shift in tone alerted everyone, while making Terrence all the more eager to see what was in store. His enthusiasm was becoming a bit concerning, though no one felt the need to voice it yet.

"Gaogamon Digi-Burst!" Trevor exclaimed, sliding two cards from underneath Gaogamon and tossing them into his trash. "This triggers Gaogamon's effect and allows me to draw 1 card from my deck." He drew. "Next, Gaomon's IE effect was triggered: if utilized for a Digi-Burst, it returns to my hand." He then stopped his card from the trash, bringing his total to twelve cards. "Now, howl, Champion of the Net Space!" Trevor flashed the card in his hand. "WereGarurumon digivolves into MetalGarurumon!"

Trevor set the card on top of his WereGarurumon, sending a torrent of blue binary code around his Digimon. Moments later, a mechanized wolf digimon with golden blade-like wings emerged from the binary, its sharp howl dispersing the binary around it, the sound waves also stirring up a freezing air current that Canoweissmon reacted to.

"When My digimon digivolves into MetalGarurumon, if I have a tamer in play, I draw 2 cards from my deck." Trevor drew an additional two, totaling 14.

"Is there a point to you drawing so much?!" Terrence snapped.

"Patience. Focus more on the fact that you are dragon-less." Trevor instructed.

"Huh?"

"MetalGarurumon, attack Canoweissmon! Once per turn when I attack, WereGarurumon's IE triggers, giving me 1 Memory for having 8 or more cards in hand. Garurumon's IE gives MetalGarurumon +1000 DP for having Garurumon in its name, and Gabumon's IE gives it +1000 since I have 8 or more cards in my hand.

"Go! Cocytus Breath!" Trevor ordered MetalGarurumon as the machine wolf stood its ground and conjured a freezing energy stream in its jaw. In response Canoweissmon did as well, conjuring white hot flames in its jaws. This resulted in both firing at one another, creating a power struggle between them. As hopeful as Terrence was, Cocytus Breath overtook the stream and cooled down the dragon, deleting it.

"Welp, so much for that." Daniel crossed his arms. "He made it sound as if the card was super strong."

"Oh, it is, which is why I took it out quickly." Trevor replied. "I'll end by digivolving Gaogamon into MachGaogamon."

Trevor's Gaogamon, with the aid of the binary stream, reformed into the cyborg wolf from before, thus ending Trevor's turn.

Turn 8: Terrence

Terrence drew and paused for a moment to think. It was clear that his previous actions were coming to bite him; no digimon on the field, only the memory boost from before, while Trevor had Level 5 and 6 Digimon present on his side. He'd be lying if he said it wasn't getting to him. "I hatch Gurimon, and then I digivolve it into Agumon."

An Orange dinosaur digimon with red grips on its claws materialized in Terrence's Raising Area.

"You sure you want to end it there?" Trevor drew.

"I... I'm sure." Terrence voice quivered a bit.

"Ah...he bit off more than he can chew, and Trevor burned him for It." Sierra deduced. "Bruised ego builds character." Kaden replied.

Sierra glanced at him. "Not the way I would put it but...you're not wrong."

"Of course not. That's what you told me when I fought you the first time around, remember?"

Sierra didn't respond to him.

Trevor proceeded with his turn. "I hatch DemiVeemon, I digivolve it into Gomamon, and as for MachGaogamon: Rampage through the moonlight's illusion and digivolve into MirageGaogamon!"

MachGaogamon's turbines ignited until they turned blue, the digimon blasting skyward. Binary encircled it and made it transform into a wolf knight, clad in sapphire armor and a red cape. It slashed the binary away with massive claw gauntlets and then joined MetalGarurumon.

MetalGarurumon got into a stance in which case the hatches hidden all over its body exposed themselves and the hidden artillery underneath. A barrage of missiles fired forth, crashing into Terrence's untouched Security.

Terrence

Security: 5-4

"Well now, I just realized that I haven't attacked your Security up until now..." Trevor noted. His attention was then drawn to the Digimon emerging from the Security...

"How nostalgic." He smirked as WarGreymon lashed out.

MetalGarurumon: 13,000

WarGreymon: 12,000

The golden-armored Dragon warrior lashed against its wolf counterpart, clashing gauntlets with blades as they danced a violent waltz. After evenly matching one another, WarGreymon took to the sky and attempted to generate a large sun-like attack. MetalGarurumon took note of it and charged another Cocytus Breath. WarGreymon threw the concentrated energy, and MetalGarurumon fired back. Like with Canoweissmon, MetalGarurumon blasted it back, so the combined energy rejected WarGreymon, granting MetalGarurumon another turn of survivability.

"I'll play another Thomas, and then have Mirage Attack your Security!"

MirageGaogamon: 12,000-14,000

Terrence

Security: 4-3

"By the way, have you noticed how many cards you have in your hand? Since before you worried about mine."

Terrence didn't like the sound of that but looked anyway. "I have nine..."

"Yes, you do," Trevor grinned, "and because of that, Thomas' effect triggers! Since you have 8 or more cards in hand, I suspend my tamer to unsuspended MirageGaogamon, allowing it to attack again!"

MirageGaogamon, in response spun and backhanded the second Security.

Terrence

Security: 3-2

This time, the Security revealed MetalGreymon, a cyber-enhanced variant of the present Greymon.

MirageGaogamon: 14,000DP

MetalGreymon: 7000 DP

"My second Thomas suspends, unsuspending Mirage, and striking you for a third time!"

Mirage pulled back for the 3rd strike and opened the hatch on the wolf-head on its chest. Revealing a cannon, it fired a golden beam, burning away yet another Security.

Terrence

Security 2-1

"This is the price for being greedy..." Terrence uttered revealing his card. "Security Trigger: Terra Force!"

Trevor was taken aback as another concentrated sun-like ball fired from the Security, blasting MirageGaogamon into smithereens.

"I'll end by digivolving Gomamon into Leomon." Trevor said, repeating his move from early on.

MetalGarurumon: 11,000 DP

The two clashed once more. MetalGarurumon took a more offensive approach, utilizing its speed and blades to slash WarGreymon. Reactively, WarGreymon deployed its shield to block the strikes, before taking off into the sky. Upon noticing it, MetalGarurumon unleashed its barrage of missiles. WarGreymon lined its limbs up and spun, being a spiraling drill that shot through the barrage and into MetalGarurumon below, taking down Trevor's digimon.

"Nice job!" Daniel exclaimed, with Maxine equally surprised.

"I'm not done yet! MetalGreymon's IE effect gives my Digimon piercing if it's a Dragonkin or Machine digimon. Since WarGreymon's a Dragonkin, piercing takes effect! Greymon's IE effect gives Security Attack +1 as well!"

Trevor gave an approved smile as WarGreymon burrowed through MetalGarurumon's binary and struck the Security to follow. The first one was Gaogamon, who met a similar fate.

Trevor

Security: 2-1

As for the second, Trevor checked it. "If it were any other card, you would've won…"

Trevor

Security: 1-0

Terrence's blood went cold.

"Security Trigger: Metal Storm." Trevor revealed. "I bounce WarGreymon back to your hand."

And like that, a barrage of missiles materialized and chased the spiraling dragon until they knocked it out the sky. Reluctantly, Terrence took the card back and trashed the Digivolution cards.

Trevor drew. "Leomon moves out and I break your last Security."

Leomon charged flames around its fist and punched the air, sending the flaming lion head to break the Security Card. Guilmon stumbled out and fiercely retaliated, but Leomon, being the clearly experienced fighter, sidestepped and slayed it.

Terrence

Security: 1-0

"And to end, I play Gomamon and Gaomon from my hand." Trevor said, summoning the pair. "Unless you have a Digimon with Rush, that's game."

Terrence looked at the cards in his hand to see if any one of them had that specific keyword. He grit his teeth afterward. "Good game…"

WINNER: TREVOR

Sierra took the lead in clapping for Terrence. One by one everyone else followed, and Terrence grew a smile, saving his tears for a more appropriate time. "That was awesome!"

"No kidding!" Trevor replied. "You really picked the game up quick!"

"For real, you only saw one match and you were able to stand up to a pro level player?" Maxine pointed out, sounding suspicious.

Terrence shrugged. "I don't know. For a while I just…knew what I was doing? I mean it's not that hard I guess."

"I don't like that answer…" Maxine squinted.

"Well, why don't you two give it a chance then?" Trevor suggested. "The Starter Decks are designed to be beginner friendly after all. Plus, if you have any questions while your playing, feel free to ask any of us."

"I think I should be okay at least," Daniel stated, taking Terrence's spot at the table. Terrence quickly cleaned up his cards and made space for his friend. "Well Max?"

Maxine blinked. "Do I have to?" She looked to Kaden, who happened to turn his back to greet customers walking in. The subtle gesture made her pout a bit. "Fine, let's do it."

Terrence grinned. "This is exciting! I'm so glad you guys are gonna play too!"

"You made it seem interesting." Daniel said, shuffling his deck. "If Red is aggressive, I'm Guessing Blue is the control type."

"I'd argue its more Tempo or in the middle of Aggro and Control," Trevor explained. "If you want more 'control,' your best options are Yellow, Purple and Black."

"Oh joy, six colors to learn…" Maxine shuffled and set her security.

Daniel set his security and drew. "Ready?"

"As I'll ever be." Maxine replied.

DIGI-GATE: OPEN!

[JFK International Airport, Queens, NY…]

Watching from the lobby as the airplane touched down on the landing strip, was an older gentleman dressed in a black suit with a purple striped tie. He had shoulder-length silver hair tied with the ends draped along his shoulders, and a dark beard, along with indigo aviator shades.

Airplanes…fascinating crafts he thought to himself. From his understandings, humans' desire to fly dated back thousands of years, talked about in legends, and only recently achieved within the last hundred or so years. And not only were they able to achieve flight, but the progress they've made in that endeavor…

The potential of humanity…what a magnificent and terrifying concept.

"Father…" a young girl's voice called out, grabbing the man's attention. Turning around to the passengers disembarking from the plane, a girl of thirteen years greeted him old, and an older boy, around 19. The girl was dressed in a black top with a cat logo in the middle, along with shorts and sneakers, her black hair braided and off to the side, held together with a white scrunchie. Meanwhile the older boy, with his short brown hair, was wearing a navy, open button-down shirt with a silver T-shirt, black pants and boots. He wore a loose red scarf around his neck and a small chain-link on his right wrist; his left had a navy-colored D-Streamer strapped on it.

The older Gentleman smiled at the pair and walked up to them. "I've waited a long time to see you."

"Likewise, sir." Justin shook his hand. "How have you been adjusting?"

"I must say that I still have a lot to learn. But first, might we find something to eat? I've passed some stalls and I've found myself curious."

"Then let's not keep you waiting." The girl smiled, showing a hint of maturity for her age. She took point, and led the two men towards the airport stores that laid ahead of them…

A/N: Yet another adventure is about to begin! I hope everyone enjoyed this chapter, getting to reintroduce some of the X-Stream Cast, having Trevor battle once again after a minute, and setting up the status quo for this first story arc. Terry and his friends are a welcome addition to the Cyber Drive universe and I for one can't wait to see their growth in the future, especially with the Digi-Grand Prix hovering on the horizon… In any case, that's it from me. See you guys later when I next update!
