Neji was sparring with Gai in taijutsu. He was actually trying and putting force behind his attacks but Gai effortlessly dodged and countered his strikes, which frustrated him. The past few months, all he's been able to think about was Naruto. He was sort of like an older brother to him. He accepted what happened, that wasn't the problem. It was that Naruto was a liar, a hypocrite. For years, he spewed about changing the shinobi world and how it was fickle. How senseless killings were wrong and how all shinobi were victims.
Only then to kill an entire clan. His own clan! Despite being outcasted, his blood was just as pure as the rest of them. He killed innocent children, innocent branch members and even the man that sacrificed so much for him. He hated Naruto with a passion. He made Hinata and Hanabi cry every night with his actions. There was no longer a side branch. There was 3 of them left, 4 if Naruto was included. Hinata was the new clan head and was set to take the seat when she became a chunin.
"Alright team I think that's enough for today" Gai said, which brought Neji out of his thoughts. "I'm not tired" he said. "That's fine, you're free to train on your own time. There is an important meeting that I have to attend along with the other jounin."
He didn't reply, he started to walk away but Tenten and Lee called out to him. "Neji, we're meeting with the other teams later today, want to come?" asked Tenten. "No" he replied. "But you need to get out and spend time with all of us" she said. "I don't need to do anything. And I don't want to spend time with any of you." "Neji this not youthful" Lee said. "I don't care about your youth and I don't care about any of this! My entire clan is dead because of a man I once considered a brother!" he screamed.
Lee went to put a hand on his shoulder but had to block a strike. "Neji what are you doing?" asked Tenten. He started to throw more strikes and Lee found it difficult to evade him. "Calm down Neji. You are not thinking straight" he said. Instead of verbally responding, he threw a kick at his head. Lee jumped back, he figured the only way that he could stop Neji was if he fought back. He began striking back and put Neji on the defensive. While Neji was more polished, Lee was far stronger and faster than him.
That only seemed to frustrate Neji even more. He went through hand seals, shocking the two. He blew out a gust of wind and Lee and Tenten jumped out of the way. Upon landing, they have each other a look and they nodded. She pulled out a scroll and summoned a bunch of kunai. She sent them at Neji, knowing he would use the rotation. Just as she predicted, he did. He was telegraphing his moves, that's how they knew he was not thinking straight.
Lee was waiting to pick his moment. Tenten sent another wave of weapons at the boy. He could only use that move twice before draining his chakra. After blocking the weapons with the rotation, he felt a sharp pain in his stomach, courtesy of Lee. He tried to throw a punch but felt exhausted. That caused Lee to quickly block and hold him in place as Tenten tied a rope around him restricting his movements.
He fell to the ground struggling. It went on for about 5 minutes until he stopped. Tenten could've sworn she heard sniffling. So did Lee. They looked at Neji and they were surprised. He was crying. He didn't even bother trying to hide it. He just let it all out. They both took a seat next to him and waited for him to regain his composure.
A woman was at a bar drinking. She was heavily under the influence. Her purple hair was wild and her trench coat was starting to reveal her fishnet clothing. "Anko, it's time you go home. You've had enough" the bartender said. "What? Why? I've only had a few drinks" she said slurring her words. "Hey, wouldn't you like to come back to my place?" a man said next to her. "Get lost punk, not interested" she said. "Listen you snake whore, I'm giving you a chance. Nobody else likes you here, you might as well become useful."
She pulled out a kunai and was about to kill the man but her wrist was grabbed. "Anko, relax" came a familiar voice. Even in her drunken state, she immediately knew who this was and it just pissed her off even more. "What the hell are you doing here?" she asked. Jiraiya just sighed. He wasn't in the mood to put up with her attitude. "You're drunk, let's go" he said. She pulled her wrist away from him. "You don't tell me what to do. I'm not a child anymore." "So why are you acting like one?"
"Just leave me alone. You finally come see me after all this time? Too late sensei she said putting emphasis on it. "Look, I'm not coming on my own. The Hokage requires your presence" he said. "I'll be there in a minute" she said. He took a look at the purple hired woman for a minute again before walking off.
Naruto was sitting by his campfire, lost in thought as he stared into those flames. Ever since that night, he had a lot of time to think about what he did and he wasn't sure how to feel about it now. He knew that he was going to do what he did for a long time. It was definitely premeditated. It was only a matter of time before he struck. He murdered the clan that was responsible for his mother's death. But he killed innocent people who had nothing to do with it.
He watched their faces twist in horror and he heard their screams of agony. Contrary to popular belief, he didn't enjoy killing. In fact he hated it. He just did it often because he was forced to and he was good at it. He was raised by killers, his job was to kill, that was all he knew.
Was he just supposed to leave his old life behind and start a new one? There was only a few people he cared about back there but he doubted that mattered anymore. Tsunade was as cutthroat as the best of them, evident by the fact that she listed him as a double S class missing nin. That meant he had the biggest target on his back which undoubtedly meant more senseless death. Oh he was self aware, he knew he was far from innocent. But that didn't mean that he was going to let himself be captured.
His finger twitched. "I suppose you've thought over our conversation" came the voice of the masked man. Naruto remained still, staring into the fire. It was a minute before Naruto spoke. "I want to join the akatski." The masked man thought he was hearing things. "What?" he asked. "You're the leader right? I mean it's obvious. For you to keep tabs on me which is no easy feat, you wear that mask to conceal your identity. In fear of someone finding out who you truly are. Which is why you put on a facade around your subordinates."
The man narrowed his one visible eye. "Your point is?"
"Your are not Madara Uchiha, I know that much for sure. You need me just as much as I need you" Naruto said. "You do realize that you will die if that beast is taken out of you right?" Naruto chuckled. "Who knows?"
Anko made it to the Hokage's office and she was half tempted to knock on the door but instead she settled for kicking it open. "You wanted to see me Lady Hokage?" Tsunade sighed. "I did. Anko, I know that you want nothing to do with Naruto and joining the hunter team but your knowledge on him would be essential in capturing him and could lead to Orochimaru."
"Pfft. Even if I did tell you all I know about Naruto, it wouldn't help much. I was only around him when the pervert and Orochimaru was. And on top of that, the person i knew was apparently a facade." "Damnit anything would work Anko! It doesn't help that Kakashi is moping around even more than usual so he can't help. We have a criminal that is far more dangerous than Orochimaru and you have the knowledge to help."
"I'll do it if Kakashi does" she said. "Well you have to go talk to him yourself. He won't leave his house" Tsunade said. "Fine but who else is on the team?" "So far it's you, Jiraiya, Neji, Fugaku, Itachi, Shikamaru and Shizune and a couple of Anbu." "That won't be enough." "Well he has people scared shitless and the one's that want to join aren't even capable of making him sweat."
Anko sighed. "When's the next meeting?" "You just worry about getting Kakashi out of his house and I'll take care of the rest."
She didn't even bother knocking on Kakashi's door, she knew he wouldn't answer. She made her way through the house and saw him sitting on the couch. "How long are you going to bitch and mope about the situation?" she asked. He glanced at her and sighed. "As long as it takes to not feel a thing anymore." "You do know that your brother isn't dead right? I mean yeah he's basically public enemy number one but he's not dead."
"He might as well be. If he's captured by anyone, they will kill him if he doesn't kill them first." He tossed her a bingo book. "Page 302" he said. She flipped to the page and her eyes widened at the bounty. "That much money!? He's basically a walking jackpot" she said. Kakashi chuckled a very lifeless laugh. Anko sighed. "Look, I didn't come here to be depressed with you. I came to tell you that Lady Tsunade added us to the hunter team."
"You mean she told you to convince me to join?" "Whatever floats your boat. The only chance that we have in getting your brother back is you." "What makes you think I want to hunt him down like he's a wild animal?" he asked. "Because you know him better than anyone and who's to say he doesn't kill anyone else while he's out there?" she asked. "I just feel like I failed him. I allowed this to happen. I took everything away from him" he said.
"How many times are you going to blame yourself for things that were out of your control?"
"This time it was in my control. I raised him around killers. I allowed him to become the person he is today. I let him get away with so much crap that he felt invincible. And now we're short an entire clan."
"And unlike all of the other tragedies that have happened in your life, you have a chance to correct this one" she said. He looked at her once again and then at the ceiling. "You aren't going to leave until I say yes?" "Correct" she said smirking.
Temari was reading over the note that he left her. She would read it almost every night it seemed. She didn't know why but she found herself being fond of the Hatake, even with all of the crap he pulled. Yeah he was a criminal but wasn't literally every other ninja on the planet? He was right. Shinobi were fickle.
Thats when she heard a knock at her door. She shoved the note under her pillow. "Come in" she said. Kankuro poked his head in. "Gaara told me to give you this" he said, handing her a scroll. She eyed it curiously but opened it nonetheless. She read over the contents and her eyes got wider with every line she read and Kankuro noticed. "What's it say?" he asked. "The Hokage wants me to join the hunter corps." "What? Is that even possible?" "I don't know, I'll have to speak with Gaara" she said.
Naruto and the masked man made it to a cave that contained the 7 other members. "Guys, guys Tobi brought back the Kyubi jinchuriki" the masked man said. "What the hell? How did you get captured by him!?" said Kakuzu. Hidan chuckled. "It looks like you won't be able to collect your big bounty after all" he said. "Silence. Good job Tobi, the rest of you are dismissed" said Pein.
When there was only Tobi, Naruto, Konan and Pein left, Pein spoke. "So he knows that you are Madara as well." It wasn't much of a question, more of an observation. "Yeah I do. It seems like you aren't the leader you fool everyone to be" Naruto said. "Excuse me?" Nagato replied. "Everyone relax. Now about the Kyubi-" "Yeah about that, I don't actually have it."
The room was pure silence. "What do you mean you don't have it?" asked the masked man. "Who told you I had the beast sealed inside me?" "It's common knowledge that that Minato sealed the beast into you after it escaped" said the masked man. Naruto smirked. "It seems like your age is finally catching up to you." "What do you mean by that?" "When the beast was supposedly sealed into me, I was three years old. By then my chakra network was developed so if the beast would've been sealed inside me, I would've died. On top of that, wasn't it your battle when Mito Uzumaki sealed the beast into herself?
Only an Uzumaki is able to contain the beasts chakra. I thought you knew that Madara." The man narrowed his eye behind the mask. "So explain your usage of the chakra when you were younger" said Pein. "I never said they didn't try to seal it in me. Of course I retained some of the chakra so they trained me to use the little bit I had."
"So where is the Kyubi?" Madara asked dangerously. "You don't scare me, but the Kyubi is still in Konoha. Locked away in a seal inside the Hokage vault." "So why would Konoha lie about you being the jinchuriki?" asked Konan speaking for the first time. Naruto looked at her in surprise. "You're kinda cute, you're not dating emo man over there are you?" "Watch it?" Pein said. "Anyways, why would they publicly announce that they have no nuclear weapon after their village was weakened? That's just asking for an invasion" he said.
"That would add up. We will discuss more of this later. You need to reintroduce yourself to Kisame, you will be partners" Pein said. "Out of all people, him? Really?" he asked. "He's the only one without a partner" said Madara. "Whatever" Naruto said as he left. "...I don't believe a word that he said" said Pein. Madara just stared at the retreating form of Naruto.
Naruto sat next to a river enjoying the peaceful atmosphere. So much has happened within the last few months and some of it was his fault... most of it was his fault but who's keeping count. He picked up a rock and skipped across the water. He narrowed his eyes. He quickly pulled out his chakra blade to block a strike. "Kisame, long time no see" he said. "So you decided to join us?" he said as he dodged a slash from Naruto.
"What's your m.o?" he asked. Naruto smirked. "Why do I have to have ulterior motives? I can't be in the criminal clubhouse like the rest of you?" he asked. "You're a jinchuriki, at least that's what you want everyone to think" Kisame said. "And here I thought they placed me with the brawn's of the group." He ducked a kick and extended his leg causing the man to jump back. "You don't need to be the sharpest tool in the shed to get the digging done" he said.
Naruto sheathed his blade and stood up. "You know you aren't half bad. I look forward to working with you" he said. Kisame gave a shark like grin. "Likewise"
"Alright now this is what I know. He could be anywhere but he's more comfortable in colder climates because he knows not many people would go out of their way to be there. He's a night owl but he knows I know that so he'll be back in hiding by noon. He's fluent in every ninja art. He even knows a little fuinjutsu. He's able to use every chakra nature and possess both yin and yang release. He doesn't care about much but the things he does care about he holds them close.
Now he possess the forbidden scroll and I hate to tell you this but he can learn a jutsu faster than anybody I've ever known. He can't use the kyubi chakra very well from what I know. And he has an ancient summon that could very well be stronger than a tailed beast. Does anyone want to add?" Kakashi asked.
The room that consisted of the hunter corps plus Tsunade all looked at him in shock. Shikamaru put his head on the table and sighed. "There is one thing that I know for certain he holds near and dear to his heart" said Neji. "And what is that?" asked an all too eager Fugaku. "His parents" Kakashi muttered.
"He carries our father's sword and there's no way in hell we are getting that. His mother is a different question. I'm not sure if she left him with anything" Kakashi said. "Do you still contain her belongings?" asked Jiraiya. "I haven't been to the house since the day she died. I gave Naruto a key when he was old enough so maybe there was something in there that he loved."
"I volunteer to go check" said Anko. "I do too" said Fugaku. "Same" said a smirking Jiraiya. "No" was Kakashi's reply. "What do you mean no? You have no authority over this group" said Fugaku. "I have the only key to the damn house. I am also the only person in here to have ever been inside there. None of you knew her or bothered to get to know her when she was alive. So either I go in there alone and search or nobody does" he said.
"She was my aunt. I was not alive when she was, so I never got the chance to meet her. I will come" said Neji. Kakashi eyed the teen for a moment before sighing. "Let's go."
Naruto and Kisame were at a sushi bar. "You know I never really asked you. How the hell are you half man, half shark? Was your dad into sharks or was it your mom? I'm curious." "No you imbecile! Thousands of years ago the Hoshigaki clan were originally full of humans and then one day they decided to retreat to the ocean when they couldn't handle all of the wars going on. They had to adapt to the water and somehow they used their chakra to gain shark like traits."
"That still doesn't explain why you're blue" Naruto added. "What about you? I know who your brother and your father is but those eyes. You're apart of the Hyuga clan-well you were apart of the Hyuga clan, no offense" Kisame said. Naruto took a sip of his drink. "Nah it's fine. What's done is done but to answer your question, my mom was a Hyuga. Ironically she was the sister of the clan head."
"So you killed your mother?" Naruto gave him a glare. "No, she died shortly after I was born. If anything, Hiashi killed her. He-" he stopped talking as his arm started to burn. A seal appeared on it and it began to glow. "So this is how they want to play huh?" he said. "What?" Kisame asked? "Looks like i have to pay my someone a visit" Naruto said.
Kakashi and Neji made their way through the house and they had to say that it was well kept. It was the exact same as the last time he was in here. Neji saw a picture of a silver haired man with a silver haired teen and a beautiful woman with long black hair. She was pregnant Those eyes, that's her, he thought. "Yep, that's Mikasa. She was such a sweetheart, but she wouldn't hesitate to protect her own" Kakashi said next to him.
"She looked just like my father and Hiashi Sama." Kakashi gave an eye smile but didn't reply to that. "I'll go check Mikasa's room upstairs. You can check the basement" Kakashi said. Neji nodded as they split up. Kakashi made it to her door and took a deep breath before entering. Memories came rushing back like a tidal wave. There were pictures of him, his father and her. Her bed didn't have a single wrinkle and her room still had that same elegant fragrance.
He snapped back into focus and began searching. Neji made it to the basement. There was a bed there with a lamp and a small dresser. This must've been where Naruto slept. He saw a bunch of rusted up weapons on the wall. They ranged from swords, to kunai, to battle fans to large mallets. Was he a weapons collector or something? When he got closer, he noticed the names carved out on each weapon and he realized that, the rust was dried out blood.
He remembered the names of the people he killed? He went to the bathroom and opened the medication cabinet behind the mirror. There were all types of medication and first aid. He then saw a small glass box. He carefully picked it up and opened it. He saw a beautiful silver necklace with the name Mikasa spelled out. He quickly closed it and shut the door of the cabinet.
"Going somewhere with that?" a familiar voice said. Neji's eyes widened as he dropped the box making it shatter. Naruto's eyes narrowed at that. "What are you doing here?" Neji asked regaining his composure. Naruto looked at him confused. "What am I doing in my mother's house? No no, what are you doing here?"
"You bastard!" Neji screamed. "Neji are you alright?" Kakashi asked coming in the bathroom. Neji turned back and saw no one. He was panting heavily. "I'm fine" he said. "He was here wasn't he?" asked Kakashi. "B-but how?" Neji asked. "He was known as ghost for more than just his appearance." He then noticed the broken glass on the floor and his eyes widened. He picked up the necklace with care and the memories came back once again. "Let's go" he said.
Temari checked into a hotel and was laying in bed. She decided to take a break before continuing her journey to the leaf. She would normally camp outside but it was freezing cold out there. At least that's what she told herself. She didn't really want to join the corps to hunt down Naruto. She would essentially be betraying his trust. But then again, she'd look suspicious if she didn't join. She put the pillow over her face in frustration.
"Now princess I know you aren't thinking about me" said a voice. She jumped up and placed a kunai at the newcomers throat. "Easy easy, why must you be so violent?" asked a grinning Naruto. "What the hell are you doing here and how did you know where I was!?" she whispered. "Well first let's put this down?" he said grabbing her hand and pulling it down. "Now I'm here because I thought I'd come see you and how did I find you? Well we just so happened to be in the same town and I know your chakra signature like the back of my hand."
"So you pop up on me unannounced? What if I was naked?" she asked. "You say that as if it would be a bad thing. Besides I know you have on panties under those blankets" he said. She glared at him which caused him to chuckle. She lost her glare quickly when she noticed the laugh. "What's wrong?" she asked. He looked at her with confusion. "Nothing why?" "Don't lie to me" she said. "Look something happened okay. I'd rather not talk about it."
"Why not? You let me know anything else under the sun. Was it personal?" she asked. "Yes, it involved my mother. You wouldn't understand." Weather he meant it or not, she took offense to it. "And what's that supposed to mean?" "I said what I said. Someone broke into my mother's house and destroyed the one thing I had left to remember her by" he said.
"You were in Konoha? How did you not get captured?" she asked. "I'm an anbu, you know that. Aren't you heading to Konoha anyway?" he asked. "Yeah, why are you asking?" He shrugged, I just thought they recruited you to join the team to hunt me down." She frowned. "If you knew, why'd you ask me?"
"To see if you would lie to me or not" he said. "Look I didn't ask to be in the corps. Gaara forced me to." "And what are you going to do? Surely not tell on me, not that I'm forcing you to keep me a secret."
"Don't try to manipulate me. I may like you but I will not be made out to be a fool" she said warning him. He held his hands up in defense. "That's not what I was implying. I'm just saying you have a tough decision to make, that's all." "You're putting me between a rock and a hard place Naruto. You're making it seem too easy" she said. "I'm just trying to see where your allegiance lies. I need to know if I can count on you or leave you."
"Look, I'm the sister of the Kazekage. Suna is allied with the leaf. I don't have much of a choice here." "Damnit why? If you don't want to do it then don't!" "If it was that easy, I would! But nooooo, I have to save your ass because you wanted to go on a killing spree." "Don't go there" he said. "Why not? You came to my house a bloody mess and expected me not to feel some type of way?"
"So what? I killed them because they were all evil. Every single last one of them played a part in screwing me over in my life. Hiashi killed my mother out of spite and jealousy and they all sat there and let it happen. Everybody thought I was some stuck up kid because I was confident. And hell, maybe I was but that never defined who I truly was. Nobody got the chance to know me besides my brother. Nobody cared about me besides my brother. When i joined anbu, he had my back. When I was near death, he was saved me. Hell even when I was kicked out of anbu, he was there. But you know what hurt me the most? When I was locked up in that cell, he didn't visit me not one time!
I spent more time with a crippled bastard who tried to invade my mind and control me! So I'm sorry if I'm too much for you to handle. I can't help the way that I am. This is just the cards I was dealt. But I thought that maybe, just maybe that you wouldn't judge me because your brother was in a similar situation. But I guess not."
He turned to leave out the window but she called out to him. "What?" he asked. She walked up to him and cupped his face. They stared into each others eyes. "I'm just scared" she whispered.
..."I am too" he said as they kissed.
"This is all I found" Neji said placing the necklace on the table. "What's this?" asked Shizune. "It was his mother's necklace" said Kakashi. "And how do we know that he cares for it?" asked Jiraiya. "I-I saw him when I opened it" Neji admitted. "You what!" yelled Tsunade. "And you're just now telling us?" asked Shikamaru. "He was gone seconds after I saw him." "And how do we know if this wasn't an allusion or some hallucination of yours?" asked Fugaku.
"Because he used to do it to me in anbu" said Itachi. "I also know his scent" said Kakashi. "This just adds more trouble. If he can freely sneak into the village without detection, who's to say he won't start picking off ninja?" asked Tsunade. "He never kills without reason unless it's a mission and even then he'd rather disable them" said Anko. Kakashi nodded. "So you're saying that he was justified for killing Shisui along with the Hyuga!?" yelled Fugaku. "No, I'm not saying that. I'm saying that everyone in the village has nothing to worry about. He wouldn't come back here without reason."
"So now that he knows that we have her necklace, it's only a matter of time before he comes back right? Shouldn't we plan for that?" asked Shikamaru. "You know if you weren't so lazy, you'd make a good strategist one day" said Anko.
Naruto was in bed with a sleeping Temari on his chest. The sexual tension finally reached a boiling point apparently he mused. She wasn't like any girl he met before though, she was tough and she wouldn't let him walk over her which he liked. Not to mention she was arguably smarter than him and she could kick ass. What the hell was he talking about? He couldn't be catching feelings for her. Could he?
He just looked at her sleeping peacefully. For someone who was a hard ass, she sure looked innocent when she slept. He didn't plan on telling her that though for his safety. He gave her a kiss on the head before going back to sleep for a while.
Temari woke opened her eyes and had to say that this was the best sleep she had in a long time. She felt the firmness and warmth of the bed and she lifted her head up and saw who it was. Her initial reaction was to scream but the events of last night played in her head and she blushed. Were they in the heat of the moment? Or was it something more? She was pulled out of her thoughts by his voice. "Sleep well?" he asked.
"I did. What about you?" she asked. He smiled. "Best sleep ever" he said. "What time is it?" she asked. "Why? You up for another round? You know that thing you did with your mouth was-" she put her hand over his mouth with her face blushing from embarrassment. "I asked because I need to know when I have to leave for Konoha." His mouth formed an o. He looked over at the clock and sighed. "It's 10:30, if you leave now you'll make it by 5."
"And where are you going?" she asked. "Well I have some business to attend to. You know, missing nin and all." She gripped his arm and looked at him seriously. "Don't lie to me." He rolled his eyes. "I have a couple of missions I have to complete. I could use the money. Staying in hotels every night isn't the cheapest way of living."
"What are you going to do? You can't run forever" she said. He sighed, "that i don't know. There's one of me and millions of people gunning for my head at the moment. Maybe I'll turn myself in and face the music." The look on her face made him burst out in laughter. "You can't detect my sarcasm? You're too dense."
"That's something you shouldn't joke about" she said. "Learn to live a little princess" he said as he gave her another kiss. "You have to make it to Konoha before nightfall. There's a double S class missing nin you have to catch." She couldn't help but to crack a smile.
Naruto met up Kisame a few hours later. He was in the next town over, so that's how he found Temari. "You smell like a woman" the larger man said. Naruto smirked at him. "Being a criminal is stressful. You gotta let go sometimes." "You're sick" Kisame said. "Do you not like women? I mean it's perfectly fine if you don't, I just don't swing that way" Naruto said. "Shut the hell up" was all he got as a reply.
Temari made it to the leaf with little time to spare. She was escorted to the Hokage office to meet Tsunade before meeting the rest of the team. Upon given access to enter, she was greeted by the sweet smile of Tsunade. "It's nice to finally meet you Temari, I hope your trip went well" she said. She smiled and bowed. "Thank you, it's nice to meet you as well Lady Tsunade. My trip was rather eventful."
"Oh, I can tell by your glow. He's a lucky man" Tsunade said. Temari's eyes widened. "No no it's nothing like that!" she pleaded. Tsunade waved her off. "It's not my business. But I'll take you to meet the rest of the corps so you can get familiar with them." She nodded and followed the older woman.
They made it to a room that resided within the Hokage building. When she entered, she felt a bit uncomfortable with all of the attention on her. "Everyone, this is Temari. I'm sure that most of you know who she is so you know that she is just as capable as the rest of you.
"Long time no see you troublesome blonde" said Shikamaru. "Hello lazy bones" she replied. "We've heard you have had past relations with Naruto" said Kakashi. She looked at him confused, "what?"
