Sorry for my bad English.
Someone questioned me about why make more OCs in this fic, so to not make any confusion I decide to share my answer for him in this note.
I make OCs not only because I want, but because I need it for the story.
For starters, I don't plan to involve the duo in the battle against Cinder or the White Fang since they are more team RWBY's enemies. So some OCs will act as their enemies, foes they need to defeat in order to become stronger and have adversaries to fight against. Some will be villains that will eventually return, some will just appear once and never to be see again, but for those of the Challenge I will use once again in the future, some even may become enemies.
Personally, I'm not a fan of a story where a OC is introduced and his presence changes nothing in the plot. I always think that a new character should have some impact in the plot, be small or big. There is a story I follow that put Jaune in those fights but changed nothing and he just got screwed up with the school staff. With Ryan, making him the strongest of Vacuo would make everything easy or turn to a more goofy tone, something I also not a fan of.
Yes, more OCs will appear but still will be a story surrounding Jaune and Ryan. It is similar to my OC story, while team RWBY keep going saving the world, the story shows the daily live of the team while facing their own problems.
With that said, let's move on the story, shall we?
To the fic!
Prof. Port Class
-And that my students, it is how you defend yourself from Grimms while protecting your emergency provisions and keeping those vile monsters away. -Port stated while the duo, covered in bruises, was on the ground panting heavily while having backpacks and two Grimms tied up by their sides.
One of the few things the duo regretted with the decision of the Challenge is that the staff uses them as they want.
Dr. Oobleck sometimes puts them to reenact past events of the history, with poor makeshift weapons and a ridiculous choreography.
Glynda uses them as test dummies to show different types of movements to uses against the Grimms while dressing them in ridiculous Grimms costumes.
Professor Peach enjoyed to use Ryan to test dust, and Fernando puts Jaune to watch out for Glynda while he sleeps in his office.
And Port liked to use them to show how to deal with Grimms in the most unexpected and stupid situations.
The only one of the staff who seems to not take advantage of them was the nurse.
-Sir. -Jaune began. -Can we please take a break?
-Of course. -Port said. -Go to my office to take some rest. Next, I want to show to everyone how to deal with one of those vile monsters while brushing your teeth.
No need to mention that neither of the duo was happy with what was coming next.
Port's Office
Port's office shows how much he had pride in being a hunstmen.
Head of not deteriorated Grimms was put on the walls as trophies, as well some jaws and even a stuffed squirrel grimm.
-I didn't know that squirrel Grimms even existed. -Jaune stated.
-They are not to be underestimated, Jaune. -Ryan commented. -They can be really hard to deal with it.
-What about this one? -Jaune said pointing to a pair of bat-like wings.
-Seems the wings of a Night-terror. Humanoid bats that attack during the night. They dive and caught the victims with their legs, then flying away to feed on their blood.
-Creep. -Jaune said, shuddering. It seems like he just heard something from a horror movie. -What about this one? Some type of ox grimm? -He asked pointing to the horns above the window.
-From the size, seems a pair of horns Ragerush. As the name suggests, they are ox Grimms who hate not only the color red but everything else. If there is something in their line of sight above the ground, be a tree or a rock, they will rush non-stop and reduce it to dust, the useless one.
-Wow. I don't want to find one of those. What you can tell me about this one? -Jaune asked pointing to what seemed four-horse hooves.
-Can only be the hooves of a Nightwander. Horse Grimms who are mostly found running in forests during the night. With their bodies covered in a bone-like armor and spikes on their legs, the damage they cause once running against someone can be deadly.
-Geez. No wonder professor Port keeps those as trophies. -Jaune said looking around the office. -I also would like to brag about if I ever be able to deal with one of those Grimms.
-I would rather not.
-What you can tell me about this one? -Jaune pointed to a canine-like cranium.
Ryan for the first time seemed confuse as he approached the cranium for a better view.
-I... can't say for sure. It is too oval to be a Beowulf's cranium but is too big to be a wolf's.
-You ever saw a wolf's cranium?
-I don't want to talk about it. -Ryan answered quickly before speak again. -I don't think I ever heard about this type of Grimm.
-Hohohoho! It because it was a unique one! -Port loudly declared, startling the duo to the point they hugged each other.
-You don't say it?! -Ryan asked.
-Uhh, what do you mean with unique professor? -Jaune asked as the duo let go of each other.
-Exactly what I mean Mr. Arc! -Port stated again as he approached the cranium. -This Grimm was one I never saw before in my whole life. -He turns to the duo. -I was accompanying a group of students when suddenly, one of them came running at me saying that a Beowulf had appeared. I grabbed my weapon and prepared for an easy battle. Think to my surprise once I saw a more humanoid wolfman attacking one of my students. With my weapon in hand, I went to what was one of the hardest battles I ever had against a grimm!
-This thing gave you so much work to talk like that? -Jaune asked.
-You can bet anything this is true Mr. Arc! -Port continued. -Once I defeated it, I was curious about what kind of grimm was. Sure was not a Beowulf, it was a different type of Grimm. Since it had no name, I name it myself as... Lycanthrope.
-Lycanthrope? -Jaune asked before looking back at the cranium.
-Fitting, isn't? -Port asked and turned around, his back facing the duo. Ryan did not notice Jaune reaching with his hand to the cranium's jaw. -It is very rare for a new type of grimm to just appear. -As Port spoke, Jaune by accident removed one of the cranium's fangs.
-Eek! -The blonde knight look back to his professor and took the chance he was distracted and put the teeth in his pocket.
-Something is wrong, Mr. Arc? -Port asked turning to the blonde.
-No, not at all! -Jaune nervously said. Fortunately for him, Port seems to not have noticed his nervous tone.
-Very well, now come along you both! -Port declared hading them toothbrushes. -It is time to show how to protect yourselves, and your dental health as well.
Port's declaration send a shiver to the duo's spine.
The last assignment of the day was from professor Peach.
The pink-haired woman, who always seemed wearing a lab coat, was standing behind her desk studying a transparent dust when she heard the door opening.
Turning to the newcomers, she was not surprised to see the duo covered in bruises after one of Port's demonstrations of surviving. Port always has some strange ideas of survival and self-sufficiency. She remembers some involving using someone's own blood.
-And he wants to make a survival show. -Peach whispered to herself, thinking that Man Up With Port would not least even one season. -Since you both seem to have a hard day, I will give you both an easy task.
-Oh thank you so much. -Jaune thanked.
Peach just took a suitcase and handed it to Ryan.
-I need you both to go to the Noir Forest and fill some beakers with some water.
-Just that? -Ryan asked. -Nothing involving Grimms or living trees?
-Living trees? -Jaune asked.
-I don't want to talk about it. -Ryan answered quickly.
-Technically, trees are already alive. -Peach answered before explain. -The waters on Noir Forest are filled with dust that while spread in the water is useless, proved to be fundamental to some experiments.
-And you want us to go alone to that forest? -Jaune asked.
-That forest had no Grimm and decades. -Peach stated. -The reasons for that are still a mystery, but since the staff need not to worry about Grimm attacks in this area, no one put much thought into that.
-Well, if there are not going to be any Grimm. -Jaune said.
-Just fill the beakers with water and then we can go back? -Ryan asked.
-Precisely. -Peach answered. -I already asked one of the pilots to transport you both there. She is waiting in the hangar.
And with that, the duo went to they hope to be the last assignment of the day. Once they reached the hangar where the academy stored their Bullheads, they look for a small one, enough to only them and the pilot to travel to the Noir Forest.
They found the small Bullhead and before they could call for the pilot, the door of the small Bullhead opened and from there come the female pilot.
Her hair was red as Pyrrha's, and she has a lightly tanned skin. She was wearing a black turtleneck vest below an aviator jacket, her jeans hugged her legs tightly and she was wearing a pair of boots of her pants.
-So... -She began, her red lips curled in a smile as she removed her shades, revealing a pair of crimson eyes. -Who's ready for a nice fly?
Without thinking and with their faces burning red, both Jaune and Ryan raised their hands.
Ozpin look at the document in his hand, filled with names all familiar to him. Ironwood was very open regarding the matter once Wolf spill about the general knowing what he spoke with Ozpin.
Ryan Forest.
Natsu Hanabi.
Polyarnyy Byk.
Laura Bolt.
And... Milk Rose.
-That... could explain a lot. -Glynda stated.
-We don't know about that for sure. -Ozpin spoke. -James spoke about the collateral effects, but only some of them may affect the personality of the subject.
-Yeah, but what could be a better explanation for Ms. Rose... behavior?
Ozpin had to agree with her in this one.
Their thought of Ruby's cousin was suddenly cut when the monitor on Ozpin's desk warned them about two lockers being launch.
-Two lockers were launch? -Ozpin asked. -Who is out on a mission at this time?
-I don't record any student leaving for some danger. Besides, who would forget their weapons before venture into a dangerous zone.
-Let's see who launched their lockers, shall we? -Ozpin asked and look in the system for who belonged to the lockers.
After half-second, the names appeared on the monitor.
Jaune Arc and Ryan Forest.
-Well, I remember Peach saying she would send them to the Noir Forest. -Glynda commented. -I guess they don't want to take any risks.
-Are you sure about this? -Ozpin asked.
-What do you mean?
-I'm sure Peach warned the duo about the lack of Grimms in Noir Forest, not even Port brings his weapon while venturing there.
-So you think they meet some kind of trouble?
To answer that question, let's go back to a few minutes back.
Noir Forest
The Noir Forest sure made justice to its name.
The leaves were dark as the night while the trees were white as the clouds. The place radiated calm and peace, only the sounds of birdies singing and other animals could be heard as the duo look around for any source of water.
-Man, this is a nice place. -Jaune commented.
-Makes me wonder why to build the academies so close to dangerous zones. -Ryan commented. -They could build in places closer to this one.
-I guess they need to travel. I don't know how much energy the Bullheads use while flying.
-True.
This was the only words they exchanged while looking for the source of water.
The truth is the little conversation they had in Port's office was the longer they had for a while now.
Since Jaune heard about the title of the strongest of Vacuo from Fée, he had some difficulty in talking with his partner. But Ryan, being dense as he is, did not notice or is just used to people not talking to him, Jaune didn't know for sure.
The reason for the blonde's discomfort is that he vowed to not only become his partner's equal, but also surpass Ryan in skill, but he did not know that he was aiming to the strongest of one of the kingdoms.
Pyrrha actually explained to him that it does not mean that Ryan is the strongest of the whole kingdom of Vacuo, just among the huntsmen in training, but it did not change too much. He knew how capable teams RWBY and CNVL are, but none of them, even Pyrrha, carried the title of the strongest of the kingdoms they came from, and compared to them Jaune is no different from a puppy.
He remembers his partner telling him to be patient with the growth of his skills, but it would take too much time to reach such a level of skill. He knew that was being impatient, but he was still desperate in not being the lovable goofy that always needed to be saved. He needed to become stronger to be a match against his classmates, then he would strive to the same level as RWBY and CNVL, and finally his partner.
But thinking of how long will take made him feel a little low.
This until his new ability kicked, feeling killing intentions.
-Ryan, did you feel that? -Jaune asked.
-I taste that. -Ryan answered, his voice shivering.
-But professor Peach said that have no Grimms in this forest!
-Or she was wrong or we have the worst luck of Remnant for coming on the same day a grimm decide to explore.
Without waste time, they both took their scrolls and called for their lockers. They landed after a few seconds and opened, showing the pair of revolvers and a sword and a shield.
-Your shield seems... different. -Ryan stated as he took his revolvers.
-Ruby helped me modify it a little. -Jaune answered getting his sword and shield.
-What exactly she did?
Before Jaune could answer, they felt the new presence jump from a tree and land a few yards from them.
What they saw could only be described as a humanoid wolf, standing in two feet while its arms hang on the sides, it jaw groaned as it drooled, the pair of red eyes promising nothing more than pain and misery.
-Ryan.
-Yes Jaune?
-This is the Lycanthrope professor Port spoke about this morning.
-I guess it is.
Right there, the duo agreed they had the worst luck of Remnant.
End of the chapter.
This is also something not original but once I saw it, I have to give a try. The duo now must face a new type of enemy, how will they do? Discover in the next chapter.
See you next time.
