Jewel paced up and down the room impatiently. She had done basically anything to keep herself busy. She'd snooped around the rest of the house, discovering where the stash of pelts and ivory were, stuffed in a cupboard. She had also read a bunch of books, touched up her escape plan, dusted a bunch of pictures, figured out how to turn on the central heating and even managed to splint her broken wing, using bandages, broken chopsticks and Linda's abundance of books on all things bird.

She hadn't really enjoyed any of it, it was just something to do, though it was nice not to have a painful imobile wing dangling from her side.

It was currently the dead of night. She was staying awake, so as to not miss her free ride. She glanced up at the clock for the fourth time that minute but rather unsurprisingly she still had a while to wait.

Luiz was fast asleep on the floor. Jewel would have doubted that he had moved in the past day if it wasn't for the empty pack of ham that lay beside him.

By the time Jewel heard the rumbling and hushed voices outside, she hopped up with excitement, glad to be finally able to do something, anything.

"Get up!" she said, kicking the snoozing luiz, "we *kick*need*kick*to*kick*leave*kick*,"

Luiz mumbled something unintelligible and rolled over in his sleep. Jewel suspected that this was going to happen and had prepared something.

She hopped onto the arm of an armchair that was right next to Luiz's sleeping spot and knocked a pre-placed beaker of ice water off it, spilling it all over the poor dog.

"W-whagubludawhat's happening!" he sputtered

"Wakey wakey," Jewel said condescendingly, "time to go!"

"Idowanna," Luiz slurred, turning over again.

"Well you can stay if you want fuzzhead but there's a truck heading for Rio that's leaving soon and i'd like to be on it."

"Oh! we're going to Rio!" Luiz exclaimed immediately, perking up, "I forgot that's where we're going. I can't wait to be back in the warm and humid."

"Good for you," Jewel said ,"now follow me."

Jewel waddled over to the staircase and easily scaled them using the special Blue Macaw steps. She then hopped over to the end of the corridor that the stairs opened into, and opened the window.

She carefully climbed out the window and onto the snow covered awning out the front of the shop. Luiz followed suit, climbing out the window and onto the awning but because of his wide doggy paws and higher velocity he slipped on the slightly frozen surface and slid down the slanted overhang.

He dug his nails into the metal, instantly stopping his descent but his scrambling legs accidentally pushed some snow off the edge, causing it to fall on the head of one of the smugglers.

"OI!" he shouted, immediately looking up to see who had wronged him so.

"Stop picking fights you can't win," advised his friend ,"you'd definitely lose a fistfight with the wind."

The man grumbled something and got in the van.

"Now!" Jewel hissed.

She leapt from the overhang, flapping her one good wing to try and control her descent but landed in a heap nonetheless. The snow made a soft crunching sound on impact, dulling the sound so that Jewel sayed unnoticed.

She got to her feet and shivered.

"Come on," she said, turning to face Luiz, "let's go."

Luiz took a step back and squinted his eyes, lining up the jump. As he was doing so, Jewel felt the car begin to rumble underneath her feet. Before she could warn him of the danger Luiz took his running start and leapt off the awning.

While he was mid air the car lurched forwards at high speed. Luiz waved his legs about frantically in the air. But instead of driving off, the car just lurched backwards again, only moving about 30 cm. The car jerked forward again as Luiz landed, disguising the loud thump he made. Jewel was thrown off her feet by the jolting of the car and lay spread-eagled (spread paroted?) on the car roof.

The van continued to loudly lurch forward and backwards, throwing the two animals about. Jewel was rolled forward, towards the front of the van frantically clawing at the snow covered roof but that didn't slow her down. Just as she was about to fall off the roof and slide down the wind shield she slammed her beak into the roof, making a sizable dent and managing to anchor herself to the spot.

Luiz was immediately thrown off the back of the van roof and only remained on the car when the windscreen wiper for the rear window of the car caught his nostril.

"Nggggeeh" he groaned

The car eventually stopped bouncing about, letting Jewel and Luiz breathe a sigh of relief.

"Dammit you!" one of the humans in the car said ,"you always kangaroo the car, gimme the wheel."

There were some soft shuffling noises in the van as the humans rearranged themselves but once they had, the car set off at a steady pace.

Jewel unstuck her beak from the roof of the car and Luiz clambered back up, rubbing his injured nose.

"Looks like we're Rio bound," Jewel said.

"Wooooo!" Luiz exclaimed, but he exclaimed quietly so as not to alert the driver ,"Rio here we come!"
