Chapter 1: Berk, Montana

In the United States up north in the state of Montana there was a town called Berk. It was on the outskirts of the Billings, and had a population of about 300 people. There was an assortment of stores and businesses, a few schools, a park, movie theater, restaurants, and other fun and essential places.

Since it was Montana, there was also lots of fields, farms, and ranches. One of the bigger ranches belonged to Steven Haddock, a respected and successful rancher. He owned several acres of land, had stables of horses, cattle, and also fields of huckleberries.

Steven was married to nice woman named Valerie, who worked as a nurse. Together the two had a daughter, named Hannah. They were a happy little family, and Hannah had a good childhood. Then when Hannah was 15, Valerie got an offer to do some relief work in South America.

It was a great opportunity, but the whole thing would take 6 months. Valerie was reluctant to leave her family for so long, but Steven encouraged her to go for it. So Valerie signed up for the program, packed her bags, and left Berk.

At first things were fine, but then things began to get rocky between Hannah and Stoick. Stoick's stoic and gruff demeanor turned out to be intimidating to Hannah. And Hannah's clumsy and awkwardness made Steven think his daughter was soft and weak.

One Monday morning, Hannah's alarm clock went off. She sleepily reached over, and turned it off. She slowly pulled herself up, and rubbed the sleep out of her eyes. Then she got out of bed, and went to her bathroom.

After she finished, she went back to her room to get dressed. She changed out of her green pajamas, and put on her blue jeans, black t-shirt, green hoodie, and brown boots. Then she brushed her long brown hair, and braided it into a ponytail.

"Hannah, breakfast is ready." came Steven's loud voice.

"Coming, Dad." Hannah called back.

She grabbed her backpack, and went downstairs. In the kitchen, the smell of coffee and the sound of the morning news on TV. Steven was at the stove, frying some bacon and eggs.

"Morning, Dad." greeted Hannah.

"Good morning, Hannah. Your breakfast is on the table." Steven replied, not even turning around.

Hannah just simply went over to the table, sat down, and started eating her breakfast. After she was finished eating, it was time for to catch the school bus.

"I gotta go now, Dad."

"Okay, I have to get out to the fields. I'll see you tonight at dinner."

Steven then grabbed his keys and went out to his truck. Hannah sighed. Of course there was no "goodbye", "have a nice day", or "Love you", just her dad's coldness.

Hannah left her house, walked past the animal stalls, and waited down by the road. After about ten minutes, the yellow school bus came down the road. It stopped in front of her, and when it opened its' doors, she got on.

They drove for about 45 five minutes and the bus pulled up to Berk High. Hannah left the bus, and walked inside. It was the usual scene, teenagers talking with each other by their lockers, teachers walking down the halls getting their assignments together, and students getting their stuff.

When Hannah got to her locker, and as she opened it to get her books, she was suddenly pushed into her locker.

"Morning, cuz." sneered a nasty voice.

Hannah recognized the voice, and rolled her eyes.

"This is getting old, Seth." Hannah grumbled.

She turned around, and saw three teens around her age. One was a guy who had short messy black hair, blue eyes, and wore a gray shirt, brown pants, and black boots. This was Seth Jorgenson, her cousin once removed.

The other two were fraternal twins a boy and a girl; both had light skin, and green eyes. The boy had long blonde hair, wore a dark gray t-shirt, black jeans, and brown boots. The girl had long blonde hair in two braids, wore a dark purple shirt, ripped jeans, and navy blue boots.

They were Reagan and Tristan Thorson.

"(Laughs), that never gets old." laughed Tristan.

"Don't you three have anything better to do?" Hannah asked annoyed.

"(Laughs), what could be more important than seeing you do something funny?" Reagan asked.

Just then, the bell rang which meant it was time for students to head to their first class. The three left Hannah by her locker, and Hannah quickly got the rest of her books.

When she got to her first class, she saw that most of her classmates were there, but her teacher wasn't. Just as she was about to go take her seat, a guy came in quickly and accidentally knocked her over.

She fell to the floor, dropping her backpack. Everyone in the class laughed at her.

"Oops, sorry Hannah." the guy replied.

This was Frederick Ingerman, another classmate of Hannah's. He had light skin, short scruffy blonde hair, and brown eyes. He also had a hefty build, and wore a brown t-shirt, green pants, and black boots.

Hannah got herself up, and tried to ignore the laughter.

"All right people, knock it off." called a gruff voice.

This was the teacher, Mr. Gobber. He was in his 40s, with slightly tanned skin, short blonde hair, and mustache, and brown eyes. He wore a yellow shirt, brown pants, and brown shoes. He then helped Hannah up.

Mr. Gobber wasn't just another teacher, he was an old friend to Steven and Valerie. He'd known Hannah since she was a baby, and watched over her at school.

"You okay?"

"I'm fine, Mr. Gobber." Hannah replied.

Then she sat at her desk, and Mr. Gobber started class.

That first class went on normally, and then the bell rang ending it. Out in the hallway, Hannah was walking to her next class when she saw a face that made hers go bright red. From another direction, came a boy that was a year older than her.

This guy was Austin Hofferson. He had slightly tanned skin, short blonde hair, and blue eyes. He wore a light blue long sleeve shirt, black jeans, and brown boots. Hannah had a secret crush on him, but knew he would never return her feelings.

Austin was strong, confident, and cool unlike her. And though he didn't make fun of her or bully her like her cousin or the twins did, he often just overlooked her. So the just walked past each other, and didn't say a thing.

But she couldn't help but look back at him.

During lunch, when Hannah got her tray of food, she looked for a place to sit. There weren't that many empty places so she decided to just take a seat by the doors. As she ate her sandwich, she saw Mr. Gobber putting up some posters out in the hall.

It looked like it was advertising some sort of new club. Curious, she got up and went out into the hallway.

"What's that, Mr. Gobber?" she asked him.

"The annual town rodeo is going to be coming soon. And you know what that means."

The rodeo was a pretty big deal in Berk, and everyone enjoyed it. And at the high school, many students liked to try out and participate in it. "

Yep. Can't wait for it."

Hannah always liked the rodeo, with the horses, bull riding, lassoing, and tricks and shows.

School went on normally, and then it was time to go home. While Hannah was getting on the bus, she felt something on her back. She looked back and saw Seth, Tristan, and Reagan walking away from her snickering.

"Oh great, what'd they do now?" she complained.

As she boarded and went to find a seat, some of the students snickered at her. When she finally got to an empty spot, and felt around on her back and pulled off a piece of paper. It read, "I'm a freak".

Hannah just crumpled it up and threw it on the floor.

"Really original, Seth." she whispered.
