It was a long 13-hour drive, but the drive will hopefully be worth it. I looked at Hazel and Jake in the back seat, they were both asleep. I have never been more grateful that Jake and I came up with a way for me to use the elements to silently warn him of trouble than I am today, I couldn't imagine leaving them behind. As I parked in front of the house, the door opened, as if he was waiting for me to arrive. "Bells! I didn't think you'd ever leave a sunny area again, let alone to come here! Are you okay?" Jacob asked, running to my car and looking into the wooded area around his house.
"Yeah, I'm fine," I said, getting out of the car, "Or, for now I'm fine. I think I need your help." I said, also glancing at the woods. Jacob must have sensed my fear and uncertainty, because he opened the back door of my car to let Jake and Hazel out.
"Fuck Bells!" Jacob yelled, waking up Jake and Hazel, "I knew you had the snake, but you have a pet bear now? You gotta warn a guy!"
"Sorry Jacob, Hazel is a new addition to our household. Jasper kind of killed her mom." I said, helping Jake and Hazel out before grabbing my bag.
"Wait, Jasper? As in Jasper Cullen? I thought you went to the great golden state to escape vampires." Jacob said as we entered his house, doing one last glance into the woods before shutting the door.
"Yea, that Jasper. And I did, I guess I really am a supernatural magnet." I said, shivering at the thought of the negative encounters I've had with supernatural beings. "Its a long story, but to shorten it, I was driving to my apartment when I found Hazel on the side of the road crying because Jasper killed her mom. It was him, Alice, and some guy named Peter who were there." Thinking and talking about Peter made my chest ache out of fear and anxiety. "The third vampire is actually the reason I returned, I don't know if he's safe." I said. If Peter was the vampire that the bears were working with, the wolves would protect me.
As if reading my mind, Jacob grabbed my hand and asked, "Bells, do you think this mysterious third vampire is one of the ones who the bears tried to feed you to? Has he hurt you?" I could feel the heat radiating off of Jacob, a sign he was getting angry.
"No Jacob, he hasn't hurt me. But he was asking a lot of questions about my scars, something no one has done before. And for him to suddenly appear, claiming his gift told him to do so, something feels off." I need Jacob to understand why I am so scared, I need him to be willing to help me.
"So you do think he's the vampire. We've been trying to determine how many bears there are, how many vampires, they're working with, and where they live for over a year now. We were able to catch three different vampire scents and at least four bear scents, but we haven't gotten too close to their land yet. I don't have anything for the next few days, want me to come stake out around the town and see if the scent is the same?"
I thought about accepting before remembering, "Wait, they'd be able to tell you were there wouldn't they? The bears and vampires here know to expect your scent, but I don't live by any reservations in California, so it might tip them off to smell a shapeshifter there."
"I didn't think of that. What if I go with you, posing as a new friend? Then you can mask my scent with your freaky powers so I appear normal?"
"Jasper and Alice are there, though, and they know you, that might make them suspicious. What if I sent you a shirt of his or something?" My stomach made itself known at that point, causing Jacob and I to laugh.
"Let's go get you some food Bells, then we can talk with the other wolves about ideas? They're having a party at Sam and Emily's so all the wolves will be there." He looked over at Jake and Hazel, "I can call and ask if it is okay to bring these two as well if you want"
"I don't want to leave you alone Bella," Jake said "Can I come with you please?"
"And I want to be informed so I can help keep you safe," Hazel said, "Can we both come?"
"Jacob, both Jake and Hazel want to come, can you see if they're okay with that? If they aren't I won't join because I don't want to leave Jake or Hazel behind."
"Yeah, I'll call and ask, you stay inside though. I'm gonna do a quick lap around the house to, just to make sure you weren't followed." Jacob said before running out the front door.
