Finally have the ending, after so long.
Melissa, Ralph, and Bert were all still in the living room. Bert continued to hold the well-fed and half-asleep Kit as her parents drank their tea.
Finished with her tea, Melissa moved to take her daughter from Bert, but she noticed that Bert looked sad.
"Is something wrong, Bert?"
Bert looked up at his friends and spoke a bit shakily.
"I didn't want to mention it before, not with everything that you guy have had to worry about, but...lately I've been worried that you won't want me to live in the Raccoondominium anymore and that you'd...kick me out."
Ralph and Melissa looked shocked that Bert would say such a thing, let alone think it.
"No!" Melissa exclaimed softly, not wanting to disturb the baby. "We could never do that! You're family!"
"Really?" Bert whispered, with tears in his eyes.
Ralph nodded and put his hand on Bert's shoulder. "We still want you to be a part of our lives, Bert, no matter what happens, no matter what changes."
Kit wrapped her tiny hand around Bert's finger, as though agreeing with her parents.
Cedric came home to find his father sitting in the living room, with the bags under Cyril's eyes more pronounced.
"Hi, Pop. Is everything okay? You look tired."
Cyril got out of his chair and slowly approached his son.
"Cedric, there's something that I've wanted to show you, but I just couldn't find the right time."
"What is it, Pop?" Cyril asked, a little worried.
Cyril pointed to the old book and an equally old-looking box on the coffee table.
"Your mother wanted you to have this," Cyril said, picking up the box.
Cedric opened the box, frowning when he saw what was inside. It looked like a strange combination of a sailor suit and a frilly doll's dress.
"Your mother was the one who bought it," Cyril said defensively. "I never opened that box, so I, uh...here."
He gave Cedric the photo album, and Cedric looked inside. Cyril had shown Cedric photos of his mother before, but Cedric had never seen this particular photographs. This was obviously a pregnancy album.
"You should know, son," Cyril said slowly, "that the album...ends early. Prematurely, you might say."
Cedric understood what his father was trying to tell him: that he had been a preterm baby like Kit.
Cyril struggled to keep talking. Cedric noticed how his father had started to tremble. The younger Sneer moved closer, just in case Cyril collapsed.
"Your mother...there were complications when you were born, and she...she..."
To Cedric's shock, Cyril broke down into rough, raspy sobs. Cedric had seen his father cry on rare occasions, but never anything like this. He hugged Cyril as the older aardvark cried, and they sat down on the couch together.
"Why didn't you tell me any of this before, Pop?" Cedric asked softly, once Cyril had calmed down.
Cyril rubbed at his eyes, which were still damp. He cleared his tear-choked throat.
"I was afraid that you might blame yourself for it. And part of it was for my own selfish reasons. It was just so painful to even think about, let alone talk about."
"I understand, Pop," Cyril said. "And I know that it wasn't anyone's fault. But can you promise me something, Pop?"
"Anything, son," Cyril replied with a slight hiccup.
"No more secrets," Cedric requested, gently but firmly.
Cyril put his hand on his heart.
"No more secrets, son. I promise."
Father and son hugged again. The sentimental moment was interrupted when Cyril glanced over Cedric's shoulder and noticed that the pigs were watching them through a crack in the door. The pigs' touched smiles were quickly replaced by panic as Cyril stomped towards them.
"GET OUT OF HERE, YOU PRIVACY-INVADING PORKERS!"
With Kit finally asleep, Ralph, Melissa and Bert all took her back upstairs, and Melissa lovingly and carefully set the baby back in her crib.
"Goodnight, Kit," Ralph whispered, kissing the top of his daughter's head.
Above Kit's crib was a framed photo of her family, which had been taken by Nichole. Kit was in her mother's arms, with Ralph and Bert each on one side of Melissa, as well as her uncle and cousins.
Bert smiled, glad to be part of the family, even if it wasn't by blood. He softly closed the door to Ralph and Melissa's bedroom so that they and the baby could sleep.
The End
