Ch. 11: Sora's Egg-cellent Assignment
Just as every student takes a seat in the classroom, the bell rings to signal the start of class.
The door burst open to allow Mr. Hackington and his lab assistant into the room.
"All right! Pair up!" the mad scientist shouts and all the teens does as they were told and Frankie found herself sitting next to Sora.
Soon, all the partnered-up students had an egg placed in front of them.
"To survive this test, you have to keep your egg babies from breaking for one week," Mr. Hackington then leans over Lagoona and Gil. "Any cracks, you fail!" the teacher then cackles.
Heath's hair catches on fire as he reaches for the egg, only for Draculaura to snatch it away and starts cuddling it. Cleo holds up her egg to let Deuce turn it into stone.
Mr. Hackington then approaches Lagoona, Gill, Frankie, and Sora. "Maybe you should switch partners?"
Lagoona looks up at him. "Why would you say that?"
"Everyone knows sea monsters are bad parents."
Gil glares at the teacher. "Not true. That's an old fisherman's"
"As for you!" he then points at the school's only Normie. "You're a magnet when it comes to trouble."
"Hey!" Sora shouts. "No, I'm not!"
The Mad Scientist leans in and simply says. "Arcade?" that causes the boy to slump down into his seat. "Seven days! No cracks! Or you fail!"
"He's just being anti-phibian," Lagoona hugs the egg as does Gil. "Well, we'll show him. We'll be the most fin-tastic parents ever!"
After class, Sora approaches the Living Cadaver. "Hey, Frankie! So, when should we meet up for…" he reaches for the egg, only for the ghoul to hold it away from him. Looking into her mismatch eyes, the boy sees worry in them. "Frankie?"
"Sorry, Sora, but Mr. Hackington is right. Trouble does tend to follow you. I've known that since the day I first met you."
"It's not always like that."
"I know but…" she glances at the egg. "I just can't risk failing this assignment. And neither can you. This is the last class that you need to get caught up in, Sora. It's better this way," the ghoul then walks away.
.oOo.
After avoiding Sora for nearly a week, Frankie eventually approaches the Normie.
"Hey, Sora," she stands in front of him holding the egg. Still having that worry look in her eyes.
The boy tilts his head. "Frankie? Is there something wrong?"
"Not really but…" the ghoul looks back down at the egg. "As you know, Cleo has been sending us from one Fear assignment to another. It's become harder for me to keep doing that and to watch over the egg. So…" she offers up the Egg Baby.
Sora looks between the ghoul and the egg. "You're trusting me?" and finally accepts the offer.
"Well…" Frankie shrugs. "We are partners for this assignment. With that must come trust," she then places a hand on the boy's shoulder. "Please take care of the egg, Sora."
The Normie blinks before flashing her his smile. "Don't worry Frankie. You can count on me!"
.oOo.
In Study Howl, Lagoona and Gil were caring for their egg with utmost care. Also around their table is Deuce tapping on the still statued egg and Heath who is tossing his from one hand to the other like a ball. Both had been left alone by their partners to care for the Egg Babies due to both ghouls having Fearleading practice.
The door then opens to reveal a stunned and drenched Sora, with his clothes singed and leaves in his unusually straightened hair still holding onto the egg that appears untouched.
Everyone just watches as the Normie drags his feet across the floor all the way to the table with the others and takes a seat among them. He then carefully sets the egg on the table, slid it away, all so he could slam his head down.
"Crickey!" Lagoona lets out. "What happened to you, mate?"
"It's a long story."
.oOo.
Sora was carrying the egg down the hall, when suddenly, the egg was snatched from his hands.
"What!?" the Keybearer looks around and strangely sees a Flood zipping off with the egg. "Hey! Bring that back!" he summons his Keyblade to chase after it.
The boy ended up in the pool room where there were other Floods. As Sora swipes his weapon through them, he notices that the Unversed were seemingly playing keep away from him.
He finally slashed through the last of them but then saw that it had let go of the egg and it was about to fall into the deep end of the pool.
"No!" he jumped in after it.
.oOo.
During break, Sora walked outside for some air. He found a bench to rest on and set the egg down next to him. He then felt a quick breeze. The boy looks to his side and finds the egg missing.
"Huh?" looking around, Sora sees a soldier like Heartless flying off with the egg. "Again!?" and chases after it.
The Air Soldier led the boy to the tip of the school's tower where it managed to balance the Egg on the highest point before flying off.
Sora reaches for the Egg and just as he touches it, the Egg tips over the opposite way. "No!" he then jumps after it.
A plant ghoul was tending to some bushes during her free time when she lets out a shriek from a Normie falling on top of the bushes she was currently working on.
"Yes!" Sora cheers, while holding up the unharmed egg.
.oOo.
Back in Study Howl, everyone stares at the boy.
"That's more bad luck than Friday the thirteenth and October thirty-first on the same day," Lagoona tells him.
Gil asks, "How are you still alive?"
Sora raises his head. "That was nothing. Trust me. I've survived worse."
"Okay," Deuce reaches for a small stick that was poking out of the Normie's hair. "But why does it look like you were set on fire?"
"That's actually not a very long story."
.oOo.
Before class started, Sora was talking to Heath with the Egg setting on the desk in front of the Normie. When a couple of ghouls passed them, the Fire Elemental grins as his hair catches on fire and leans on Sora's desk, catching it on fire as well. The spikey-haired boy manages to snatch up the Egg and hold it away from the danger. However, that did nothing to save himself.
.oOo.
Everyone then stares at the Fire Elemental who just shrugs.
"Hey! It was an accident."
"Putting Heath aside," Deuce turns back to the Normie. "It seemed like those creatures where just trying to get under your skin."
Sora crosses his arms, looks up, and tilts his head. "Now that you mention it. Both Heartless and Unversed are usually annoying but this time it seemed like they were messing with me. How come?"
"I have to get my entertainment from somewhere," a new voice enters the conversation. Sitting at the desk among them is none other than the cloaked figure.
Everyone jumps back and Sora summons his weapon.
"You again!?" the Normie readies for a fight.
The Sea Monster then points out. "Aren't you that bloke who caused trouble at the dance?"
The Figure nods. "That I am," the tip of the Keyblade is then pointed at his face.
"What are you doing here?"
"I think the question you should be asking is where's my egg?"
The students blink before looking down and found the table in front of them empty.
"The Eggs!" Lagoona shouts and everyone looks around.
Deuce points. "There!"
Standing in front of the doorway are four creatures that could only be described as white figures that appear to be living clothes with a cross-like shape on their heads dancing around holding onto the eggs. The creatures then zip out of the room.
"Nobodies too!?" Sora chases after the Dusks with the others following behind.
The students chase the Nobodies through the halls. Deuce lifts his glasses to turn one of them into stone and manages to retrieve his Egg.
"Nice," he chuckles. "Man, Cleo would have killed me if anything happened to you," the Gorgon then notices the Egg returning to normal and as a precaution, used his powers on it. "Just in case."
"Bring that back!" Heath starts throwing fireballs at another and manages to hit one and it tosses the Egg into the air as it vaporizes. "Bullseye! Woah!" the Fire Elemental catches the Egg and notices a couple burn spots. "Surely, Draculaura won't notice."
Sora and the Water Monsters round the corner and search around.
The Normie asks, "Where'd they go!"
Gil points out. "Over there! They're heading into the catacombs!"
"How are we going to find them down there?"
"Come on!" Lagoona opens a nearby locker. "I know a short cut!"
.oOo.
Sora pushes up on a stone above him and reveals a large chamber. Right in the middle of the chamber are the two Dusks still holding onto the Eggs.
With speed unnatural even by Monster standards, the Normie quickly dashes towards the two Nobodies and manages to swipe his Keyblade through both at once. As a result, the Eggs went flying.
Seeing this, Lagoona shouts. "The Eggs!"
Sora uses all the muscles in his legs to kick himself off the ground to grab one Egg. He then grabs onto a nearby support pillar, spins around it, launches himself across the room, and manages to catch the other one before sticking the landing.
"Oh, yeah!" the boy cheers as the Water Monsters rush up to him.
"Oh, thank you, Sora," Lagoona takes one of the Eggs and cradles it.
Gil then wraps an arm around her. "You just saved our Egg and perhaps our grade."
"But you didn't have to."
The Normie gives his usual goofy smile. "It was no problem. It wouldn't be fair if I only tried saving mine," he holds it up.
Clapping can be heard from the other end. "Well done!" the Cloaked Figure congratulates them. "Now, it's time for round two," he raises his hand and in the middle of the room, a swirling vortex appears that grew bigger, and bigger. Once the vortex vanishes, standing above them is a being similar to the others but gigantic.
"Oh, no!" Sora brings out his Keyblade once again.
In one quick movement, the Twilight Thorn goes to swipe its hand across the ground, intending to snatch up all of them. Only, the Nobody froze up before reaching them as it turns to stone.
"What!?" the Figure turns to see a certain Gorgon placing his shades back over his eyes.
"Yo!" he simply waves with Heath next to him.
"Deuce? Heath?" Sora tilts his head as the two approach them. "What are you guys doing here?"
"We thought you could use some help."
"Good thing too," Heath starts boasting. "You guys would have been helpless without the Heath-ster," the yellow boy leans onto the Twilight Thorn and suddenly, it tipped over and shatters. "Uh, oops!"
"Are you kidding me!?" the Cloaked Figure kicked one of the rubbles that used to be part the boss. "Do you know how hard it was to find one of those!? And it was out done by a couple of dumb jocks," he summons a corridor behind him. "I'm out of here!" and walks through and the Corridor disappears. Leaving the students blinking at the space where he used to be.
.oOo.
The next day, Mr. Hackington is going over his victims… his students' assignments.
Draculaura and Heath's Egg had some obvious burn marks, but it was also done up with makeup and a wig.
The Vampire shrugs. "Cute, huh?"
The Mad Scientist could fail them for that. But the only requirement he gave for failing was having a crack.
Cleo tries to break the outer stone part of hers and Deuce's Egg, only to then glare at her boofriend as nothing happens. Theirs is also technically a passing grade.
He then reaches Frankie's and Sora's Egg. He examines it before looking up at the Normie. "How is this thing not completely shattered?"
Sora's eyes widened as he shook his head. "It wasn't easy."
The teacher then shrugs before going over to the Water Monsters. One turn of their Egg reveals a single crack.
"Ah-ha! A crack! You fail!"
"Crikey!" Lagoona carefully lifts the Egg. "I don't understand. We did everything right."
More cracks appear surprising not only the Water Monsters but also the teacher.
Hackington drags up his assistant. "Where did you get this?"
"Gargoyle's nest. Top of the library."
The egg hatches to reveal a single baby gargoyle that then flies up to attack the teacher.
Gil points out. "Hey! Ours is the only one that hatched."
Lagoon then replies. "I knew we'd make great parents," as the two watch their baby gargoyle maul their teacher.
.oOo.
After class, Deuce approaches the school's only resident Normie.
"Hey, dude! You know what this means right?"
Sora tilts his head. "That I passed the assignment?"
"No. well, yeah. It also means that you can finally play Casketball with the rest of the team."
"All right!" the spikey-haired boy high fived the gorgon.
"Be ready, Sora. We have a big game coming up. Better be ready," he then walks off to join his ghoulfriend.
"Hey, Sora…" Frankie calls out as she walks up to him. "I need to apologize."
"Uh…" he simply tilts his head. "For what?"
The ghoul rubs her arm. "For not letting you help take care of the Egg in the first place. I knew about how you often get into trouble, but I also know that you manage to get yourself out of trouble as well. I really should have trusted you in the first place."
"I really can't say that I blame you," Sora throws his hands behind his head. "I do have a track record. But I have to admit that I had some help from the others while taking care of the Egg. So, I can't take all the credit."
"Even so. I'm sorry," she then takes a deep breath. "Now that we got passed this. All that's left to do is to do well at the upcoming Fear Meet," she turns away while glancing at the Normie. "I'm rather nervous about it. I was hoping that you would be there to support me."
"Of course, Frankie. What are friends for?"
The Living Cadaver's bolts spark. "Voltageous! I'll see you there!" the ghoul then runs off.

NOTE: I've recently rewatched Volume One of the G1 Webseries. I'm not very confident of how many of them I could adapt to this. Back then, most of those were nothing more than one offs with most of them lasting less than two minutes. Mattel was more interested in using them to promote their dolls (which worked) rather than telling good stories. In my opinion, most of the good stuff didn't start happening until Volume Two. Might reference events here and there occasionally. I will also admit that I want to start entering the Gloom Beach and Monster Mashionals Story Arcs soon. After which, I could get to the Specials. Might do some short chapters in between here and there while working on them.
