………
Ding. Ding. Ding.
A cloak tower in the middle of the square rang when both hands hit twelve midnight. By this time the whole city was already asleep. Taking a goodnight rest after a stressful day. But while it marks the end of their day, it was just the beginning for others.
In a dark underground tunnel a horrifying scene was taking place. Monsters that could be described as a human's worst nightmare converging towards a single point in a frenzy.
The monster were actually demonic spiders that were half the size of a full grown man. Their iron jaws looked like it could cut through a metal bar. They looked bloodthirsty as they made loud shrieking noises like the sound of glasses scratching against each other.
However, the most scary part wasn't the spider but the human who stood indifferently in the middle of it all. The man looked to be in his Late teens and had on a black cloak with short blonde locks on his head. Underneath his black cloak, he wore a black long sleeve t-shirt with the last few buttons left undone revealing a black singlet. There was dark orange lining around the wrists of the shirt. Black dress trouser with a silver skull buckle belt and black sneakers.
In his right hand was a demonic looking sword. The cross guard looks like a demonic spiral connecting to a small skull at the end of each side with a small hand coming out of it mouth.
The grip of the sword has an elaborate design with two pointed horns acting as the pommel.
On the flat side of the sword is a demonic skull that looks like that of a fox with pointed demonic horns on top of the skull connecting to the cross guard.
Moreover, there were six demonic horns underneath the skull, three on each sides with the two horn on the side of it head being the largest
The long blade has three elongated jagged edges on both sides of the blade, to make it easier for it to rip and tear off the flesh of whoever or whatever it cuts.
Just the sight of it and demonic aura it gave off could scare a lesser demon and even give a human nightmares for many night.
With this harbinger of death in hand, the man moved like the grim reaper, brutally harvesting the lives of the lesser demons.
If it wasn't for the fact that the demons turned into dust when they died the scene would have been gory sight to see.
The man wielded his blade so skillfully that it was impossible to avoid getting but by it. His way of killing was enough to put even the grim reaper to shame.
A wide swing from his sword cleave through a group of demons but the space they left was quickly filled in a matter of seconds. But the man didn't blink. To him they were nothing but papers in a shredder machine. No matter how many of them there were, they will still be shredded to pieces.
Naruto charged through the demons like an unstoppable bull, he cleared a path wherever he went but it was quickly filled back up.
He couldn't remember how long it has been since he started fighting the demons. But if he was to guess, he'd say at least two hours.
'I can't continue like this' Naruto frowned he looked at the colony of demons threatening to swallow him whole. 'You leave me no choice'
A small spiraling orb the size of a marble appeared in Naruto's right palm before growing into the size of a basket ball.
A small frown formed on Naruto' face as he stared at the blue orb rotating a few inches above his palm. This was one of the legacies given to him by his parents, it was also the first one he ever used and was fond of. It was called a ninjutsu in their world. It's been a year since he got the inheritance from his parents and during that time he had learned a great deal of knowledge from it even if it was only ten percent of the entire thing.
If there was one thing it was best known for, it was it AOE. However, the tunnel they were fighting in wasn't that large, so if the jutsu got out of hand the tunnel might collapse.
'I have to make sure to contain it power so I don't destroy the tunnel'
The demons as if by prior agreement started to rush Naruto more frantically when they saw the blue orb on his palm. They started to pile themselves on him one after the other, creating a huge mountain of bodies in a matter of seconds.
However, all it took was just one word to shatter this mountain.
"Rasengan!" A voice boomed from deep within the mountain of bodies.
Boom!
The mountain of bodies burst apart from inside out as a huge blue spiraling dome form around Naruto tearing apart everything it touched.
Because the demons had stacked in top each other to get to Naruto they had all been within the range of the attack. None of them was spared. Like a domino effect the demons burst into a cloud of dark dusts one after the other creating a stunning sight.
"That was fortunate" Naruto sighed in relief as he watched the demons perish one after the other. Underneath him was a medium size dent where he had smashed the rasengan just before the demons completely surrounded him. Fortunately or not, it was thanks to them that his attack range was contained and didn't reach the roof of the tunnel.
However before Naruto could relax a loud shriek suddenly came from deep within the tunnels as the late demon died.
"Nooooooo!"
A figure walked out from the other end of the tunnel with an enraged expression. The figure was at least ten foot tall with the upper body of a female and the lower body of a spider.
She looked livid, and ready to murder the source of her rage ten time over. However, Naruto smiled when he saw her approaching.
"So you finally showed up. I was beginning to think that you weren't home" Naruto frowned. The whole reason he was here in the first place was because of the demon currently making it way towards her.
When he first arrived here she had refused to show herself for some reasons and had only been sending her soldiers to fight him which infuriated him.
"You?" The Arachne turned to looked at Naruto, finally noticing him after his spoke. She had first assumed that he was a human who unknowing wandered into her territory. But after hearing his words she took a closer look and when she saw his face her expression immediately turned ugly.
"It's you! The son of Dante!"
Naruto remained indifferent when he heard her words and saw the fear in her eyes. He didn't know when but presumably after he and Dante defeated Mundus, he had some way or the other became infamous among the demon kind.
It first started a few weeks after the defeat of Mundus, Dante had asked him to check out an abandoned warehouse said to be the base of a group of demons. At first he wanted to refuse but Dante told him to do it as a favor he owed him for losing their bet.
Unfortunately he had no choice but to do it. But what he wasn't expecting was that as soon as the demons saw him they had the same expression on their faces while referring to him as the son of Dante. Since that day on it has been like that with any demon he encountered, some of the more intelligent ones stirred clear of him whenever he was spotted. Moreover, it's been a year now since they defeated Mundus and sealed the demon gate.
After ascertaining the identity of the man before it the Arachne Lost all will to fight and took a step back in fear wanting to make a quick escape. But as she turned around remembered that he had just mercilessly killed all of her children and her expression turned livid again.
"So what if you are the son of Dante? you are no Dante. You are only basking in his glory!" The Arachne roared as she raise one of her legs to strike at him.
"Is that so?" Naruto's expression turned solemn when he heard her words. He unconsciously tightened his grip on purgatory, before the Arachne could attack she saw a bright orange flash before her world view turned upside down.
She saw Naruto walking away from her body with purgatory sheathed on his back. But the most scary part was that her body was headless.
'I'm I dead?' That was the last thought that flashed in her mind before her vision blacked out.
However, Naruto continued to make his way out of the tunnel without looking back, his expression ugly He had wanted to take his time fighting the Arachne but she just had to open her big mouth.
Honestly, why must every boss demon he fight always compare him to Dante? Not only that but even among their human contractors he was just the son of the legendary dark knight, Dante. He was completely overshadowed by Dante's achievements. So much so that It had become a sore spot for him.
If it was in the past he would have had trouble dealing with demons on the level of the Arachne, not to mention killing it in one strike. But after opening the seal containing the nine tailed fox he had grown stronger after synchronizing with the kyubi chakra.
Discarding all the useless thoughts in his mind, he made his way out of the tunnel and back into the night city. The only evidence of his presence ever being there was the small dent that had formed in the tunnel ground. It would go on to become one of the mysteries of the city as to how the dent had miraculously formed overnight.
……
Inside a luxurious building, an old man was fidgeting while pacing around his living room. If one took the time to look around the living room they would notice that everything inside was expensive and not something that any middle class family could afford. From even the smallest object to the largest was costly and exquisite looking. Even the paint on the walls was of the highest quality. However, shockingly, only four people lived inside this expensive and huge mansion.
On one of the expensive couches in the living room sat two women both with an expression of fear and anxiety. The both of them had their heads bowed as if in prayer.
These two were the wife and daughter of the man, Beatrice and Elena. And standing attentively behind them was his personal bodyguard, Rufus.
The man was a well known politician running for the office of governor. But a couple of weeks ago, one of his competitors managed to sign a contract with a demon which he used to threaten him out of the competition.
However the man wasn't satisfied for the past few weeks now the demon had been showing up around their building at night, peeking at them from outside their windows. Because of this spider his whole life went downhill fast. They couldn't even sleep properly and it was evident by the dark circles and sleep bags under their eyes. Their body also looked lean from all the stress.
But the one who has it worst was his daughter, as even in the day she would always see small arachnid spiders stalking her. It got to the point that she was afraid to even leaving the house.
This prompted him to go and plead with the other person but he refused the claim, saying that he had nothing to do with it, so he had no choice but to return home dejected.
However, when he thought that all hope was lost, he suddenly met a mystery man at a bar he frequent claiming to know someone who could solve his problems. Unsurprisingly, he got excited after the man gave him a number to contact along with a code.
At first he had his doubts, but then a thought occurred to him. If the person on the other side of the line could help him form a contract with a demon, then his family wouldn't have to be afraid of the demon spider anymore.
With this thought in mind he quickly dialed the number, but to his surprise the person on the other side was actually a woman with an angelic voice. He didn't know when but he had assumed that the one to pick up the phone would be a man.
But he didn't hold that thought for long before he said the secret code that the man told him. The other person on the other side fell silent after she heard the code. However, that silence lasted for a couple of seconds causing him to panic, as he assumed that he had said the wrong thing and was going to lose the only solution to his problem. But that all proved to be for naught as when the woman spoke again she asked for his home address.
At first he was skeptical but he knew that if he delayed anymore than necessary the woman might get angry and hang up the phone. With a burdened heart the man had no choice but to give his home address to a stranger. However, her next words was something that he never expected to hear.
"Alright, sit tight. I'll send someone to take care of your problems"
Click.
Before he could say anything the phone hanged up. He thought it was a joke at first thinking that the mysterious person who gave him the number had played a cruel joke on him which enraged him. He went to bed that day with this bitterness in his heart.
But a couple of days later he heard a knock on his door startling him and his familiar. Because of the situation they were in they had been abandoned by friend and family alike. In fact there was already a rumor about them spreading in the city. The only one who stood by then was his bodyguard Rufus.
They couldn't even remember the last time they heard their own doorbell as nobody bothered to visit them anymore.
He didn't want to open the door, afraid that the demon had finally come to finish it work. But after Rufus and his family convinced him, he reluctantly allowed him to open the door and wait stood there was not a demon, but a man in his Late teens.
The man looked Asian with the scars one each side of his cheeks. His blonde hair and deep blue eyes emphasized his already handsome look. He was dressed in all black and on his back was a huge keyboard case. However, what surprised him the most was that the man looked to be not that much older than his daughter.
The man walked into their home under the wary eyes of his family, even Rufus had his hand in his gun. However the words that came out of the man who introduced himself as Naruto left him doubtful.
He claimed that he was sent here by a woman to help them slay a demon. To slay a demon? How can a human slay a demon? If it was possible he wouldn't be in this predicament that he was in right now. Apart from his familiar nobody else could see the demon that was terrorizing them, making the m assume that they had all gone made. Not even Rufus could see the demon and they both lived under the same roof. He was certain that if it wasn't for the debt of gratitude that Rufus owed his family, he would have left them long ago. Moreover, what surprised him the most was that the man looked to be the same age as his daughter, if not a little older.
However, the man didn't seem to be bothered by the fact that we didn't believe him. Instead, he said that we should wait here, while he go and slay the demon and it contractor.
Despite the fact that he doubted the young man's word they couldn't help but be hopeful. That's why his entire family was still awake while it was way past midnight. He glanced at the window occasionally as it was around this time that the demon showed up but shockingly he hadn't seen any sign of it for the past two hours.
'Is this for real?' The man glanced at the cloak and saw that it was already three in the morning.
He looked at his side and noticed that she was also looking at him in surprise. He even saw a look of hope flash in her eyes. His daughter however still had her head bowed with her eyes closed and palm pressed firmly again her ears to keep the sound out. She was muttering incoherently.
The man looked at his daughter with pity and self hatred. She was in this situation because of him. Once all of this was over, he promised to take her far away from all of this.
While they were all locked up in their own little minds, a loud knock came from the door startling all of them.
'Is it him?' This thought flashed through the minds of all of them. However, nobody stood up to open the door. They were all afraid of an unexpected plot twist. Just the thought that it was might not be the man but someone else prevented them from taking a step back.
The knock on the door got louder and more frequent before it suddenly went quiet. When it felt like the person on the other side had finally given up, the door suddenly exploded into pieces frightening them. Rufus quickly pulled out his gun and aimed at the entrance waiting for whoever it was to show their self.
The first thing that came into sight was a head full of blonde hair as Naruto stepped into the room. The inhabitants of the house visibly relaxed when they saw him but that only lasted for a few seconds as their gaze landed on the object he was carrying in his right hand. No that wasn't right….to be more specific, what he was carrying in his right hand was a man dressed in purple pajamas. From the looks of it he must have been asleep when Naruto abducted him.
However the man wasn't just any random man, he was the same man that had cursed his family and denied ever having anything to do with it.
"Oh you guys are home. I thought you had all ran away when nobody answered the door" Naruto frowned but he was also slightly surprised as he dropped the body in his hand. There was a time when he had also asked a family to wait for him to return after he went out to slay a demon. But by the time he returned, they were all gone.
However, nobody answered him as they had their eyes on the unmoving body on the floor of their living room. Even Elena had snapped out of her daze to stare at the body.
Swallowing the lump in his throat, Whitney looked at Naruto and asked. "Is he…"
"Dead? Yes" Naruto replied and the inhabitants gasped at his word. They all took a step back from him as if afraid that he would do them in next. Seriously, what did they take him for? He wouldn't even be here if he had a choice. But with Dante and Trish out on another mission, he was the only person available for the job.
He had left Redgrave city and had to travel hundreds of kilometers to get to this place. It was the furthest that he had ever gone from his home.
"Dead?" Whitney panicked. He said he would get rid of the demon and not murder a man. If words of this were to get out then he would not only lose everything he has worked so hard to create but his life as well. Beatrice cowered in fear and quickly stood behind her husband as she stared at the dead body. Her heart beat increase, threatening to burst out of her chest. Rufus hurriedly stood in front of Elena protectively, however, the look on his face revealed that he was also shaken up.
Whitney smiled bitterly at his wife using him as a meat shield. He didn't know whether to be happy that she thought he could protect her or cry because he had no one to protect him.
Ignoring the looks they were all giving him Naruto explained, "This man was responsible for summoning that demon. I only managed to track him down after killing the demon itself"
"You killed the demon?!" Beatrice exclaimed in shock. The rest of the occupant also looked doubtfully at Naruto. Although the demon hadn't showed up all night, it didn't mean that it was dead. For all they knew Naruto might actually be the one responsible for all of this and was just playing the role of savior to get them indebted to him. They would have claimed that the man lying motionlessly on their living room floor had hired him to fool them if only he was still alive.
It was at this moment that Whitney remembered that when the man had first arrived he introduced himself as a devil hunter. Was he really telling the truth?
Whitney glanced at the dead man in his living room. The man was his competitor, Damascus Vladimir. A very ruthless and wicked man, people always stared clear of him, wanting nothing to do with him. But to think that he used to call such a person his friend. Moreover from the angle that he was looking at the man he couldn't see any gun wound or knife wound on his body. If it wasn't for Naruto walking in with the man, he would have assumed that he had died a natural death.
Whitney felt like he needed to reevaluate the man in front of him. However, he also knew that he couldn't continue to waste time so he hurriedly turned to Rufus and said.
"Rufus please go to my room and bring me the suitcase underneath my bed"
"Alright sir" Rufus snapped out of his daze when he heard his boss words. He gave another wary look at Naruto and then dead man lying on the floor before leaving to carry out his boss order.
"Please have a sit, I'll go make tea" Beatrice hurriedly said before rushing out of the living room. She seemed to understand what her husband was thinking as the same thoughts had crossed her mind.
Naruto felt like laughing when he saw the looks they were giving him. But he didn't refuse and sat down on the couch adjacent to the family.
"So how did you find the spider? I thought that only we could see it"
"It wasn't that hard finding something so huge. After I checked around, I found traces of it that led me to a sewage tunnel underground. Moreover, you guys weren't the only ones the spider was hunting" Naruto explained. He had found some severed body parts in the tunnel while searching for the spider and had even heard rumors of people suddenly going missing. Moreover, demons were greedy creatures by nature, there was no way they would focus on just one target when they could have them all.
"Not the only ones?" Whitney and Elena's tensed expression loosen up a little when they heard his words. Just knowing that they were the only ones going through such a nightmare eased up their mind a little bit.
Before Whitney could ask another question, Rufus returned to the room with a briefcase in hand. He walked up to the table and placed it in front of Whitney who had a bitter smile on his face at Rufus poor timing. If only he had been a little late he could have had enough time to befriend Naruto. Whether he was lying about the demon or not doesn't matter. If he was really the contractor and not the Vladimir then it was worth it to be on his good side.
Sighing inwardly Whitney forced a smile as he smiled the briefcase towards Naruto, "Your payment for saving my family"
"Thank you" Naruto nodded at Whitney as he picked up the briefcase and stood up, not even bothering to check it. After all, Whitney wouldn't dare be unfaithful after experiencing the horrors of being hunted by a demon.
Beatrice who had just arrived with the tea saw Naruto about to leave and couldn't help but panic. She looked at her husband sitting on the couch for help but he shook his head signifying that there was nothing he could do. If he accidentally said or did something wrong to offend Naruto then it was all over.
But before Naruto could walk out of the broken door an hoarse voice shouted.
"Wait!"
"Huh?" The inhabitants of the room turned towards the source of the voice only to see Elena who has been quiet all this while now on her feet. Ignoring the shocked gaze of her family, Elena continued.
"It's already late. As our guest why don't you stay the night. I can show you round town tomorrow?"
"Your guest?" Naruto repeated as he though about it in his head. Truth be told he had no where to sleep after all it was his first time in this city. Although he saw am hotel on his way back here. However, if there was one thing that he learnt from Dante, that would be, why waste money when someone is offering it to you for free?
Moreover, nobody said anything about staying a few days, he could use this time to finally get some time off away from the others and his comfort zone. Moreover, there might be others in this city in need of the services of a devil hunter.
Naruto looked at Elena who was looking at him with held breath and hopeful eyes, however, she wasn't the only one. Whitney, Beatrice and even Rufus were waiting for his answer but for different reasons.
After a moment of contemplation Naruto shrugged and said. "Sure why not"
