The trio make it through the darkness and find the freight train. They had to wait in the field of weeds until the railroad workers.
Once they passed an open car, the trio make a run for the car. They hoist themselves inside the train car and stay hidden.
The train rolls down the tracks noisily. Ponyboy used Bexley's legs as a pillow while she and Johnny sat up. Johnny held the gun close to him just in case he needed it.
They had a big idea of how much trouble they were in. Ponyboy and Bexley still couldn't believe that innocent Johnny actually murdered someone. Killing wasn't in Johnny's blood.
Johnny sat very close to Bexley, who was still awake. She looked out of the open train car, watching the stars above them.
They were running from their problems. They knew the cops would be on them for the murder. Why didn't they ask Dally for some cigarettes before they left.
Johnny's other hand took the she-grease's hand, getting her to look over at him. They looked at one another, smiling before looking away.
Bexley soon fell asleep. Not even the rattling of the train could keep her awake.
(Windrixville)
By the time dawn arrived, they had made it to Windrixville. They had dismounted the train when it made it. Johnny ended hurting his ankle on the way down.
When noon arrived, the trio were further in Windrixville. They stood in a field with hills and trees as far as the eye could see.
Ponyboy and Bexley had taken off their jackets, wrapping them around their waists.
The trio trade glances and walk onwards through the field.
They had no idea where Jay Mountain was. There had to be somebody that knew where it was.
"Wait up, you guys!" Johnny called, using a stick to support him as they went up another hill.
Eventually, they found some construction workers that sat by an oil rig, having their lunch.
"Hey, maybe we can ask those guys over there," Bexley said, seeing the men.
"Yeah. Well," Johnny said, looking over at Ponyboy. Ponyboy was confused for a moment. "Well, what?" the auburn-haired greaser asked.
"Why don't you go ask them?" Johnny said. "Wha- Why can't you or Bexley ask 'im?" Ponyboy complained.
"My ankles hurt and I don't wanna walk on it," Johnny answered.
"C'mon, you can do it, Pone," Bexley said, patting her little brother's shoulder.
"What am I gonna say?" Ponyboy asked. "Just say that you're a farm boy and you want to you know where Jay Mountain is," Johnny replied.
Ponyboy looked down at what he's wearing and he brushed his long hair back, which he had inhabited. "Do I look like a farm boy to you guys?" he said.
"Hmm... Maybe. Now, go," Bexley teased, gently pushing Ponyboy towards the workers.
"They're gonna know who I am when they look at me," Ponyboy said.
"They're not gonna know," Johnny replied.
Ponyboy shook his head and walked over to the men. Johnny and Bexley stayed behind. They watched as the youngest greaser started to talk to one of the workers.
While he talked to them, Johnny looked over at Bexley. The way she looked under the sunlight, it made his heart speed up.
He had liked her for the longest time, but he was scared that she didn't like him back.
"You feelin' homesick, Bex?" he asked. She looked over at him with slightly widened eyes.
"What?" she asked. "You feelin' homesick at all?" he repeated.
"A little bit. I know Dally'll be up here once everything does down. How's your ankle?" she asked, looking down at his feet.
Johnny looked down for a moment. "It's okay. It don't hurt much anymore," he replied with a shrug.
Dally was the only greaser that knew of their whereabouts. They couldn't remain in hiding for the rest of their lives.
Dally would get in trouble for harboring three fugitives and giving them a loaded gun. He was used to causing trouble. It was no surprise.
Pony and Bex would be sent to juvie and Johnny would get the chair for sure. They might not see their brothers again.
Bexley then catches Johnny looking at her. Her cheeks became a heavy shade of red and she quickly looked away to hide it.
However, Johnny had seen it, his dark cheeks becoming red too. Ponyboy soon returns from talking with the workers. He noticed that Bex's face became red.
"Did I miss something?" Ponyboy asked. "No, you didn't," Bexley chuckled, her face still hot from how Johnny looked at her.
They had to walk another hour or so just to find Jay Mountain. They were all exhausted. Ponyboy looked like he was drunk, because he had drank only one time. Darry gave him hell for that. Both Bexley and Johnny were more tired than he was because they stayed awake during the entire ride here.
(The Church)
By the time they make it to the church, it was in the afternoon. It was a small church. It was made out of wood and had a small steeple.
"Look, the church," Ponyboy said as they stopped in front of it. "We made it. Finally," Bexley agreed, feeling relieved.
They make their way to the back and pull off some of the boards to get inside. There were cobwebs hanging from the windowsill, which they had to swipe away.
They go inside the old church. Ponyboy hadn't been in a church since they were younger. He even tried getting Bexley and Soda into going with himself and Johnny.
Soda didn't want to come unless Steve was there. Bexley didn't want to come unless Soda was there. They weren't exactly dressed their best whenever they did go.
Ponyboy and Johnny stopped going because Soda, Steve, Two-Bit, and Bexley wouldn't stop horsing around during the sermon.
An owl flies overhead. "Whoa, what was that?" Johnny asked. "Just an owl," Ponyboy asked, looking upwards.
They all took their jackets off so they could use them as a pillow. They all laid down on the ground, ready to get to sleep.
Bexley was already asleep before Johnny and Ponyboy were. They wondered what tomorrow would bring.
