Tanya had her parents taken away from her when she was a mere child during Shao Kahn's invasion of Edenia. Left traumatised and alone, Tanya was sentenced to a lifetime of labour and imprisonment within the Cobalt Mines. Tanya was forced to grow up under this harsh lifestyle with her only emotional support and findings of happiness coming from Daahraan, a fellow Edenian and prisoner. Daahraan soon became a parental figure for Tanya and aided her with her many struggles growing up over the years. After around 10,000 years of suffering in the mines, a couple of freedom fighters known as Jade and Li Mei liberated the prisoners of the mines and offered refuge in the village of Sun Do where Tanya got her life back.
