No one truly knew how Warnerstock had fallen. There had been some unease when William the Good, the Hero King, had prematurely passed away from illness, especially with the knowledge that King Salazar of Ticktockia was pushing to expand his borders. But the kingdom's position was still strong and well-maintained, thanks to Queen Angelina the Wise. Anyone would have been certain that Warnerstock could turn back Salazar easily, and it seemed to be true.
But then it all had fallen apart. Stories varied depending on who you asked, but something that remained consistent was that the smaller Ticktockia forces suddenly multiplied every night to attack with unnatural force and speed. Survivors spoke of dark creatures like walking shadows, with red eyes that struck crippling fear into anyone they fixed on.
It wasn't long before the kingdom was overrun, any resistance brutally crushed. Hope all but disappeared when Salazar put out the word that the Queen and her children had been 'unfortunate casualties' in the taking of Acme Falls. No one was fooled.
As Salazar tightened his grip, however, whispers filtered through that made the grim mood just a little lighter. Queen Angelina was indeed killed when the castle fell, but servants who had escaped said there had been no sign of the children. Soon rumor grew that they had not been in the castle at all but whisked away to safety before the enemy even arrived, and the fact that Salazar's soldiers had been swarming the town for weeks after only added fuel to the fire. They were undoubtably searching for something, but never said exactly what.
Despite every attempt to silence them, the rumors continued throughout the four long years of Salazar's tyranny. And from this, hope grew. If the children of the Hero King still lived, then there might be someone who could lead a rebellion… who could be a Hero.
The downtrodden people of Warnerstock held on to this hope with stubborn determination. Revolutionaries spread it through growing resistance networks, parents whispered it to their children as they tucked them in at night.
Not long, they said. It won't be long now.
The uprising has begun.
