The wind began to blow a cool, stinging rain against Cheyenne's face. The sun had set and it was dark now as she walked along the side of the mountain. She gave a shiver and tugged at her woolen cloak around her neck and head. She had not seen the Orcs since she entered the mountain pass. Up ahead she heard a great thunderous crash, her head snapped up. She saw stone giants crash into each other followed by screams, which she could only guess came from the dwarves. Her heart sank for a moment, what if something went wrong? What if someone did die? After the initial yelling she heard, she heard no more and decided that everything must be okay.
There was a bright flash of lightning that illuminated the entire sky like the sunlight. It was in that moment when Cheyenne saw the dwarves about a mile ahead entering a cavern. The path was slippery from the stones being pelted with rain. She had her hands clasped tightly against the stony wall, she was terrified of heights. Her palms stung and hurt, Cheyenne was pretty sure she has cut them on the jagged wall. She kept her eyes focused down on her feet trying not to trip and fall to her death.
Cheyenne finally no longer could feel the wall and decided that the large hole in the wall was the cavern that the dwarves had gone into. Since they had not been very far ahead of her, she expected to see the company fast asleep, and unaware of what was about to happen. However when she gazed into the dimly lit cavern there was no dwarf or hobbit to be seen. Fear flooded over her and she wiped her wet face with her bloody hands. Out of the corner of her eye she noticed that cavern floor toward the back was not there.
She moved very carefully toward the hole in the floor and realized the dwarves had already fallen through it. Just then the fake cave floor began to reset itself and she did the only thing she could do, she jumped. It took everything in her not to scream as she plunged to what she was sure was her death. It was almost as terrifying and a warg attack, almost. She landed basically on the back of her head and searing pain radiated from her previous wound. She was pretty sure that she had reopened it but since her hands were already bloody she really couldn't tell.
She looked around and thanks the Valar there were no goblins around her but also no dwarves or Bilbo. It was a huge underground city and Cheyenne was utterly overwhelmed. She decided she has no time to have a panic attack; she had to find the dwarves. Out of the silence came the sound of drums and barely heard singing from the path ahead. Her pace quickened as she tried to silently and carefully make her way to wherever the dwarves were. Her heart was racing and was feeling dizzy from the spike in blood pressure.
The sound of singing and rums began to get closer and even though she had a good guess at what she would see it still took her by surprise. There were many more, hundreds more goblins than she ever imagined. They were also even uglier than the movies; they looked like snot covered mutant hillbillies. Cheyenne caught the scent of rotting flesh as she turned the corner and quickly jumped back behind the large rock. She could see them now, the dwarves huddled together surrounded by goblins. She had to come up with some plan since she couldn't get Bilbo to help her. Doubtless that he was having his own problems at the moment.
She looked around desperately trying to figure something out, despite the fact her head hurt so bad she could barely think. She noticed a goblin pathway just above her that ran higher above with the dwarves was. Her hands were already bloody and in a lot of pain but she couldn't think of a better plan to get closer. As she began to crawl up the dark slick rocks her hands hurt so bad it took everything she had not the pulled way. Finally after a gruelling couple of minutes, she made it to the pathway. Even though she was in a lot of pain, she let out a sigh of relief that she had died climbing the wall. She had never congrats before and other than a few slips she did rather well.
She hesitantly walked along the path praying to the Valar that she wouldn't come across a goblin on the path. Finally she got right above with the company was but thanks her luck they were separated by wide and deep gorge. She sought to her despair a thin wire that led from the path to where the company in the Goblin King stood. She took a deep breath and decided to wait on Gandalf, she was sure he would show up there was no way she could be that unlucky right? Wrong.
She waited a few moments that's when things went not according to plan, shocker. One of the goblins grabbed Thorin's head and pressed a makeshift knife to his direct. The other dwarves were thrashing about unable to break away to help their leader. Cheyenne held her breath waiting deceased Gandalf would show up in the nick of time. When she saw blood starting to trickle down Thorin's neck, she knew she had to do something. "Balls!" She grumbled angrily and picked up the large rock she could find. She stood up and threw it hitting the Goblin King and yelling "HEY UGLY!"
The dwarves shot their faces up to where she was standing, her voice that echoed throughout all of Goblin Town. "Get her!" The goblin King bellowed at thousands of goblins ran and climbed toward her. She grabbed the strap of her bag and slung it over the wire, before she held onto it and jumped. She not very gracefully slid down the wire; she couldn't help but scream she was terrified of heights and goblins. She luckily landed on her feet and managed to draw a sword more gracefully this time.
The goblin King laughed "Oakenshield has a woman to come in try and rescue him!"
Cheyenne tried to keep her face showed just how terrified she really was inside. "You want to kill the dwarves you're going to have to go through the first." She was rather proud of how calm and commanding she seemed given situation.
The Goblin King gave a low fat laugh "get her!" He called to the massive goblins that began to encircle her. She panicked and swung her sword around with all her might. To her surprise she actually made contact with goblins, goblin heads to be more precise. She actually managed to lock three goblins heads off in one swing; she looked at her sword with renewed confidence smiled. Every goblins stood there for moment in complete shock, she finally had a good idea and yelled "arm yourselves quickly, follow me!"
To her surprise Thorin was the first one to grab his sword from the goblins and run toward her followed by the rest of the company. She didn't really have time to register her surprise, Thorin actually listen to her. She began to run for something she had been doing a lot lately. She wasn't going to lie she had no idea where she was leading them, the only thing she had to go on were the movies.
Thankfully after dodging a few errors that with by her head didn't disappeared running beside her. "Follow me" Gandalf bellowed pulling a lead in front of her, her relief. Things were actually looking up despite having arrow shot them until a massive goblins came charging. There was nowhere to get, got behind them in front of them the only other place to go was jumping off the ledge. Luckily it didn't come to that because Gandalf smacked his staff down knocking on the goblins off a ledge.
He let them down a winding pathway knocking up in the goblin so stood in their way. Cheyenne couldn't help but think even during the midst of peril that she was thankful that this part of the story seem different. Well as it always did the bad luck finally caught up with them. Just as they made it to the bridge which is where they could see the light of day something snapped. By something I mean the wood under the bridge, snapped from under the weight of all them. Cheyenne and the rest of the company let out a scream as the wood snapped in a tumbled down the gorge.
At all happened in a blur maybe Cheyenne was so terrified, maybe the pain from her head and hands finally caught up with her. Before she knew it she was laying on top of a pile of wood that was once the bridge. She whimpered, she was in a lot of pain and really just wanted to just lay there and cry. She probably would have if Gandalf's voice and not snapped her back to reality. She was in a trance like state that felt someone grabbed her wrist and jerked her up before pulling her into a run.
The next few minutes were just a mixture yelling, running, and stumbling. Finally her hazy eyes were blinded by sunlight, she had never been so happy to see sunlight in her life. As soon as her body hit the sunlight she hit the ground, not passed out this time but almost there. She couldn't really make out the dwarves but she did hear the voices.
"I think the Lassie passed out "Bofur said sounding rather concerned.
As she had been falling someone had caught her but whom she wasn't sure. "She's bleeding her hair is soaked with it "Kili exclaimed very close to her, apparently he had been the one to catch her.
"Her hands are torn to shreds" she felt Balin's hands turned hers over careful not to touch her palms. There was a bunch of mumbling voices than she felt something trickling down her throat, it tasted like water but was something else, something strange and magical.
After a few moments she began to regain her sight and composure. The first person she could see clearly was Thorin standing over her for once not looking angry. Kili helped her stand up and she automatically felt the back of her head. There was another bandage but not only on her head but both her hands were bound as well. Apparently she had been doctored up and never even realized it. "Good to see you're not looking so grumpy" was the first thing to leave her mouth.
Thorin smiled like actually smiled "thank you."
Cheyenne gave him a puzzled look "for what?"
"For saving my life, for saving all our lives"
This time Cheyenne smiled "thank you for saving my life as well, whatever liquid you gave me save me." Then she did something no one expected she threw her arms around him and hugged Thorin with all her might. Everyone looked startled especially Thorin that after second placed his hands on her back.
Next thing she knew another dwarf picked her up and twirled her around "it was the bravest of us all" Kili said hugging his friend.
"No I'm not" she smiled as Kili put her down.
"You're the only person I know, let alone woman, that would charge to crowd of thousands of goblins with only a sword by themselves" Balin seem more than a little impressed.
Cheyenne was glad to see everyone so cheerful for once but she couldn't help search for Fili out of the crowd of dwarves. She spotted him standing a few yards away leaning against a tree. She began to walk towards him, that's when the rest of the company realized Bilbo was missing. "Glad to see your alive" man she really sucked at starting a conversation. He didn't say anything, "You know you could at least talk to me since I saved your life."
"I thought were staying in Rivendell"
"Well at least you said something" she crossed her arms "if I would have stayed in Rivendell you would all probably be dead."
Fili moved off the tree, stepping closer to her his face looking gruff "you are stupid you know that."
Cheyenne's face burned bright red and she was both hurt and angry, "excuse you!"
Fili stepped closer so there was about a foot between them "you heard me your an idiot, only an idiot would go charging into a horde of goblins like that." Cheyenne's face fell, "but you're our idiot" Cheyenne smiled and wrapped her arms around Fili neck pulling him tight and giving him a huge kiss on his cheek. Just then a loud howl filled the air, Bilbo had returned, and he and the rest of the company froze.
