Owen walked into his first day of residency at Seattle Grace with his twin sister Meghan.
"What's wrong Eeyore," Meghan asked.
"Not enough sleep," Owen said.
"Why," Meghan asked.
"Amanda cried all night again then I had to leave her with mom," Owen said.
"Your daughter is fine," Meghan said, "any word from Beth?"
"No," Owen shrugged, "it's been six months, Meghan she's not coming back. I'm trying to do my residency as a single dad. Can I even do this?"
"Mom said she would help Owen," Meghan said, "isn't that why you moved back home?"
"And what's your excuse," Owen asked.
"Rent is cheap," Meghan replied, " she cooks and does laundry."
"Mom's practically raising my daughter so I can do this," Owen sighed.
"I know this wasn't your plan," Meghan said, "but we're surgeons. You think I'm going to let my twin go through this alone. My favourite womb mate."
"I wish you wouldn't say that," Owen groaned.
They found the meeting spot and a blonde woman smiled at Owen. He gave her a smile back but turned his attention to the chief of surgery. They followed along on the tour of the hospital and were led to the locker room to change to scrubs.
Meghan noticed that her, another redhead and the blonde were the only women in their class.
"Only three women," the blonde commented.
"So far," Meghan said, "I'm Meghan Hunt."
"Teddy Altman," Teddy replied, "have you met anyone else yet?"
"My twin," Meghan said, "Owen is the one over there brooding. And we grew up across the street from Nathan Riggs, he should be around here somewhere."
"Both of you together," Teddy said.
"My entire life literally," Meghan said, "he's not too bad, just stressed."
"We haven't even started yet," Teddy commented.
"His daughter," Meghan commented.
"He's married," Teddy asked.
"No," Meghan said, "it's just him and Amanda. She's 6 months. Cutest little girl on the planet."
"Where is she now," Teddy asked.
"Amanda is with our mom," Meghan said, "Owen lives in our mom's basement suite. It's best for Amanda."
"Altman, Hunt, Shepard, Montgomery," a resident called.
Meghan and Owen walked forward.
"Why do I have five," the resident asked.
"You said Hunt," Meghan said, "there's two of us. We're twins."
"Owen Hunt," the resident replied.
Meghan walked back to the locker room.
"Hunt, Riggs, Sloan, Warren," another resident called.
"Nathan Riggs," Nathan introduced himself, reaching to shake Sloan and Warren's hands before giving Megan a familiar high five.
"Meghan Hunt," Meghan said.
"They called another Hunt," Sloan said.
"There's two of us," Meghan said, "my twin brother is in the other group."
In the other group Teddy smiled at the red headed man, "I'm Teddy."
"Owen," Owen replied, shaking her hand.
"What speciality," Teddy asked.
"Trauma or peds," Owen said, "you?"
"Cardio," Teddy smiled, "why peds?"
"I have a six month old daughter," Owen said, "Amanda makes me want peds."
"Amanda is a pretty name," Teddy said, "good baby?"
"She cries a lot," Owen said, "I think she likes my mom and twin sister more than me."
"I met Meghan Hunt in the locker room," Teddy said.
"My twin," Owen replied, "don't believe anything she says."
"She seemed nice," Teddy said.
"She is," Owen said, "she just likes to meddle in my life."
At the end of their first shift Nathan suggested, "let's all go get a drink."
"I'm going to go home," Owen said.
"Come on Hunt," Derek Shepherd said.
"I need to get home," Owen said.
"Wife waiting," Mark Sloan asked.
'Daughter," Owen said, "my mom babysits while I work."
"Wife waiting," Ben Warren asked, thinking he had misheard.
"No," Owen said, "just Amanda."
"How old," Addison asked.
"Six months," Owen said, "she needs time with me."
"You drove Eeyore," Meghan said looking disappointed.
"Meghan I have to get home," Owen said, "Amanda was really fussy last night and this morning."
"Okay dad," Meghan said, "we'll see everyone tomorrow."
Owen unlocked the car and Meghan began talking, recounting her day full of excitement.
"What's wrong Owen," Meghan asked.
"There's two women in my group and one was flirting with me all day," Owen said.
"Who," Meghan asked, "you had a blonde and a redhead."
"Blonde," Owen said, "Teddy Altman."
"I talked to her a couple times, she seemed nice," Meghan said, "the other woman seemed okay. Teddy is pretty. Your type two, blonde thin smart."
"Only three of you I'm sure you'll get to know both of them," Owen said as they pulled into the driveway.
Evelyn met them at the door with Amanda in her arms, "look who's home."
"Hi ladybug," Owen said, taking his daughter, "how was your day?"
"Good," Evelyn said, "she was happy today. We went to the grocery store and for a walk, she napped and drank all her bottles."
"Solids," Owen asked.
"Some," Evelyn said, "lots of bottles though. I picked up more formula and diapers. I know you're busy. How was the first day?"
"Good," Owen said.
"Meghan," Evelyn asked.
"Amazing," Meghan said.
"Let's go play," Owen said, carrying Amanda to the top of the stairs.
"Did you eat," Evelyn asked.
"I will when she's in bed," Owen said.
"Make sure you do," Evelyn said, "Owen you're losing weight."
"I'm fine mom," Owen said walking down the basement steps.
He laid Amanda on her play mat on the floor and stretched out beside her.
"I saved a man's life today," Owen told his daughter as she wiggled closer.
"Yes lady bug," Owen said, "we're okay. We're going to be okay. Grandma said you had a good day. I missed you today. I miss your mommy two. I called her dad yesterday, but he doesn't know where she is. He wants to see you. Maybe when daddy has a day off we could go see grandpa."
Owen picked up the little girl and made airplane sounds as he flew her through the air.
"Okay lady bug bath, story, bottle then bed time," Owen said.
He had just put Amanda in her crib when his cell phone rang.
"Hello," Owen answered.
"Owen," the voice said, "it's Teddy Altman. I missed you at the bar."
"I went home," Owen said, "I just put Amanda to bed."
"How's your little girl," Teddy asked.
"Teething but she was happy I was home," Owen said, "she's asleep now. Why did you call?"
"We're both on tomorrow afternoon," Teddy said, "did you want to get coffee before work?"
"Can I let you know in the morning," Owen asked, "I need to see if my mom can babysit earlier."
"What was your plan for tomorrow," Teddy asked.
"Baby time and taking her for a walk in the park," Owen said.
"Some other time then," Teddy asked.
"You could join us for a walk," Owen offered.
"If I'm not intruding," Teddy replied.
Owen asked, "sunnyside on 25th okay?"
"I'm new to Seattle," Teddy admitted, "I can only get to work and the grocery story."
"Where do you live," Owen asked, "I grew up here."
"I'm on elm," Teddy said.
"We're on elm," Owen replied, "the park is elm and 25th."
"I know that park I've been running there," Teddy said, "I'm at elm and 21st."
"We're elm and 30th," Owen said.
"We work at two so ten am," Teddy suggested.
"Ten should work," Owen said, "she's usually awake then. Nap time is at 11:30. We try to have her up later so she can see me when I get home."
The next morning Owen made sure Amanda was in a cute onesie and little baby shorts before strapping her into the stroller. He pushed her towards the park and reaching the entrance he looked for the blonde woman.
"Hunt," Teddy called.
"Altman," Owen replied.
"Teddy please," Teddy smiled.
"Owen," Owen said, "and this little lady bug is Amanda."
Teddy leaned over the stroller and smiled, "good morning miss Amanda."
"Manda, can you say hi," Owen asked.
The baby babbled.
"Close enough," Teddy smiled, "May I?"
"If you want to," Owen said, "I'll unbuckle her."
"I can," Teddy offered, "I'm the youngest of three by about seven years , my sisters both have kids. They settled down right after college and started having kids."
"Lots of nieces and nephews," Owen asked.
"Seven now," Teddy said, "and one more in December."
Owen lifted Amanda up and turned her in his arms so the baby was facing Teddy sitting on his arm.
"Hello Missy," Teddy smiled, shaking the baby's hand and smiling at her. This earned Teddy a gummy baby smile.
"She likes you," Owen chuckled.
"They just like friendly faces," Teddy said.
"You don't have to do this," Owen said.
"I wanted to get outside before we're in the hospital for 36 hours," Teddy said, "and I miss my nieces and nephews."
"Are you close to your family," Owen asked.
"I was," Teddy said, "it's hard being away. I miss them. You're close to yours?"
"Too close," Owen said, "but I need their help. Megan is scheduled opposite to me which is nice."
"Where does Amanda go when you're at work," Teddy. asked, she was trying to see if there was someone in Owen's life.
"She stays with my mom or Megan," Owen said, "my mom is a teacher so when school starts I have to use the hospital day care."
"She'll be closer to you," Teddy said.
"She will be," Owen agreed.
Teddy kept looking at the little girl.
"Do you want to hold her," Owen offered.
"Please," Teddy smiled, taking Amanda from Owen, "hello beautiful girl."
Amanda grabbed Teddy's hair making Teddy laugh. Owen liked hearing the blonde laugh.
"Manda gentle with Miss Teddy's hair," Owen scolded.
"I'm okay," Teddy said, freeing her long blonde hair, "she's too little to do much damage yet."
"She got a chunk of Megan's a couple days ago," Owen said, "but auntie Megan deserved it."
"Do I want to know," Teddy asked.
"She was putting a pink bow on Amanda's head," Owen said, "there's only so much pink that we can handle."
"She's a girl," Teddy said.
"She's a baby," Owen said, "she plays on the floor and likes to be on the grass outside."
"We could put her in the grass," Teddy suggested, "grab a seat and let her play."
"The swings," Owen suggested, "it's her favourite thing on a walk."
Approaching the playground Owen put the little girl in the baby swing and swayed it gently.
Teddy smiled watching the tall muscular man playing so gently with his daughter. The baby smiled as she swayed. Soon the little one began to cry.
"Is she okay,' Teddy asked.
"Hungry," Owen said, "I have a bottle."
Owen sat on a bench and gave Amanda her bottle while making small talk with Teddy.
They went their separate ways when they got back to the entrance to the park.
"What did you think lady bug," Owen said, "could Miss Teddy be our friend?"
Teddy walked away smiling to herself. She liked Owen, he was attractive but more than that she got the sense that he was a deep thinker and that he could be a good friend. Watching him with his daughter she wondered could she open herself up to a new relationship? Seattle was her fresh start but what did that mean?
"You look happy," Teddy's roommate Allison said.
"I ran into someone from work on my walk," Teddy replied.
"A guy," Ellison asked.
"Yes ," Teddy smiled, "a very attractive one. Owen"
"There's a but there," Allison said.
"I work with him and he has a kid," Teddy said.
"What do you know about him," Allison asked.
"Single dad," Teddy said, "his daughter is six months. Amanda was with him, she's just precious."
"Did you hang out," Allison asked.
"We did," Teddy said.
"Did you go baby crazy," Allison asked.
"I want one someday," Teddy admitted, "but I did hold Amanda."
"I know you want a baby but don't go too fast to play with his," Allison cautioned.
"Andrew and I broke up a year ago," Teddy said, "I'm ready to start something."
"He has a kid Teddy," Allison said, "you always go for guys who aren't available in the way you need them to be or to support you. Even if Owen is single he's not available. That child has a mother that he will be involved with in some way. He won't be available in the way you need him to be."
"I'm an intern, it's not like I have time," Teddy said.
"Andrew, Henry," Allison listed, "Teddy I've known you since high school you never go for guys who can be fully there for you."
"I'm not looking for anything serious right now," Teddy said.
"You don't do casual," Allison said, "your attachment Barbie."
"I only have time for causal," Teddy shrugged, "I would do friends with benefits."
"Cuddle his kid first," Allison teased, "Teddy this is dangerous. You can't fall for him. You'll get attached to him then he's not available."
"We work with his twin sister," Teddy said, "Megan said he's single."
"Don't go there," Allison cautioned.
"Just because you and Claire have been together for years and are happy doesn't mean you can comment on my relationships," Teddy snapped, "you're not the expert."
"I'm worried about you," Allison said.
"Just leave it," Teddy said, "we went for a walk in the park and I watched when he pushed his kid on the swings."
"When do you see him," Allison asked.
"Tonight at work," Teddy said, "I have to go get ready."
"Teddy be careful," Allison cautioned.
"I will," Teddy said walking to her room to get ready for work.
Owen walked back into the house and parked the stroller on the porch.
"How was the park," Evelyn asked.
"Good," Owen said, "we played on the swings and ran into someone from work."
"What's his name," Evelyn asked.
"Her name is Teddy," Owen said, "she was really friendly. I'm not looking for anything mom. She was friendly and paid attention to Amanda."
"How did Amanda do," Evelyn asked.
"Hair pull and a smile," Owen chuckled, "we have to stop her hair pulling. Meghan and you and now Teddy."
"But she smiled for a stranger," Evelyn said, "that's a first."
"She did," Owen said.
"This Teddy, what do you know about her," Evelyn asked.
"She's blonde," Owen said, "not a lot shorter than me. She wants cardio. She's a surgeon as well. She was really friendly. She smiles."
"Owen," Evelyn questioned.
"Mom I'm not looking for anything right now,'' Owen said, "there's still a chance Beth could come back."
"Would you take her back," Evelyn asked.
"Probably not," Owen said, "but she is Amanda's mom. I can't keep Manda from Beth."
"No you can't but you can be happy," Evelyn said, "you can like a woman."
