HAPPY NEW YEARS!

People say the world is a vast place, unaware of how small it truly is. There are places that embrace the light while others hide in the darkness. People are much the same.

In a world where people have abilities, they either follow society's rules or they stray away, acting as they see fit. Heroes, villains. Two faces on a coin, two meanings to how one should live.

Though no one ever questions the gray line in between the colors of black and white. One neither a hero nor a villain. Not a civilian or anything of the sort either.

Someone who is ruled by their own neutral beliefs, not shackled behind obligatory mandates that the govern of one's choices would preside over. One who is just… themself.

They, who have vast opportunities to reshape the world, yet knowing this, allows it to advance at its own pace. A quiet being, a spectator who has long since delved into the light and darkness of the world. One who has already witnessed one cruel life's adventure now retired now looked on ready to finally face a new life…

"Attention passengers, we will be arriving in Musutafu City shortly. I repeat, we will be arriving in Musutafu City shortly. Thank you and we hope you have enjoyed your time aboard the Gigantic," an intercom announces as the blaring of a ship's horn bellows into the bright sunny morning.

To the passengers, that was their signal to begin prepping for departure. To one lone boy standing at the bow of the ship resting against the railing, it was his cue. Beyond the horizon, he could see it. The city that gave him hope in starting a new life.

Scruffy black hair swaying in tandem with the ocean breeze, his vermilion eyes never left from the distant sight. With a raised hand to his forehead, he vanished.

Appearing unnoticed in a bustling crowd, he only had to look up as his eyes took in the bustling city as he began his trek. Close to the passing shops, he momentarily paused, catching a tall mirror reflecting himself.

Reserved in both nature and casual appearance, his simple red and black attire of a shirt, pants, and a jacket made none give him the time of day. Exactly how he liked it. For a moment, the black faded, drowned in bloody crimson.

"I wanna be a hero when I grow up, Mommy!"

"Not fair! I wanna be a hero too!"

"Me three!"

"I'll be rooting for all of you! Mommy's gonna be your biggest fan, okay?"

Following an energetic child and their and their family pass, his eyes never left them within the reflection. A boy, likely the oldest and his two younger female siblings. A mother, no father around, possibly caring for all three on her own as hinted by her words.

Fate could truly be a finicky thing at times. Especially with its own "coincidences."

Another glance and the black color in his attire reemerged in the reflection. He refused to ponder such anymore. Once more, his trek was regained with one sole destination in mind; U.A High School.

U.A High School

The trek was quaint. From constant noise to the ambient sound of idle passersby chatter and birds giving the occasional chirp, he had to take a moment to look back on the trip itself. The school was located where one could easily take in the city as a whole. Large points of interest were easy enough to pick out if one could see good enough.

"I have been expecting you," a voice spoke.

He had long since realized who it was and how long they had been standing there. Still, a view like what he would be seeing a lot was something worth taking in. Even if it was the first of many.

Turning to face the source, his eyes dropped downward to a creature in a suit. A scar clearly over one of its eyes as it greeted him with a waving paw.

"It has been some time, my friend. We have much to catch up on," the talking creature spoke.

He'd known Nezu even before the young male creature manifested a quirk. After all, they both originated from the same hell.

"Have you stopped by to greet the Wild Wild Pussycats, Mirko, or Ms. Ashido yet?" He asked, peering a look over his shoulder to see a shake. "I see. You'd best do that, otherwise they'll get angry." The boy nodded. "Or wait until tomorrow. Give yourself the day to prepare," he chuckled.

He was aware more than anyone else of the chaos that would ensue if said women were not made aware of his presence.

As they walked, several heroes passed by. Each one waved at the young animal in greeting, out of respect, or both. Then they would look to the boy himself with clear curiosity before going out of view.

Nezu was the principal so the eyes and respectful gestures on him were understandable. The same could be said about the boy himself, a complete stranger following the leader of such a renowned school. To their eyes, he was possibly a promising student. In actuality, that's what he was. For now.

Before long, they had reached his office. Taking a seat facing the creature at his desk, the boy looked ahead. He was already aware of the room given he's been in it previously. More than anything, he was quite thankful to be in the presence of a trusted friend.

"Your belongings, both personal and school-related, should be at your new home by now. Have you been there yet by the way?" A shake. "I see. As we discussed when I proposed the idea alongside Lyria and Fyce, you will be enrolling at U.A. in order to be a hero. One who saves others while preserving the peace with their status as well as their quirks." He nodded in acknowledgement.

Quirks were powers given to roughly 80% of he human population. Though that 20% or what society deemed as "normal people" or the "quirkless" were looked down upon.

"I am aware that you'd prefer a more discrete occupation but given your relationship with the government, more trouble would arise as you know." That he did. "So, by being a hero, you'd regain access to use your powers without the hindrance and worry of eyes upon you."

Yes, he couldn't forget something so asinine.

The government despised him. Despite saving the world from a force that the made the infamous All For One pale in comparison. Alas, common sense to many in power was but a fleeting thing.

Only two individuals within cared for him that he actually trusted. They were fearful of the secrets he knew so he blackmailed them into giving him what he wished. One thing led to another and here he was.

"I showed you around the school before and you are already aware of what is to come so there is little else left to speak on. Though I must note that we have received word of one like us that will also be enrolling." That piqued his interest.

He was a special individual that defeated a great evil. Of course, there were others with him that he considered family. Nine individuals like himself scattered around the world after defeating a great evil. To suddenly hear one of his family suddenly coming, he was filled with a sense of apprehension.

He looked to Nezu, brows furrowed.

"An individual you named 'Nunu.' Original codename: Crono." That made the boy's eyes widen ever so slightly before they softened, a sliver of a smile increasing his neutral expression. "I'm relieved too," Nezu smiled. "You have suffered long enough. Much longer than most alive I might add."

Nezu was genuine in his words and how he carried them. The boy was thankful to have good people still by his side.

"Get some rest. Be with the people that have awaited your return," Nezu smiled, extending his paw which the boy shook. "Experience the youth you were supposed to all those years ago, stumble upon hidden love. Who knows, Ms. Ashido may become something more than a close friend," he winks, making the boy feign ignorance though the slight blush goes noticed by the adult. "Regardless, I needn't tell you of all people how to live."

Appreciative of the kind words, the boy nods as he prepares to leave.

"Ah, one more thing," he called, causing the male to turn back with a curious tilt of his head. "Relon Lucinance, welcome to U.A. High School!" The grand gesture was something one would see at celebrations though this was worth it he supposed.

With his full body facing the principal, he bows before rising with an affirmative nod.

This was his new life. The life he and many others were restricted from seeing for many years. He'd cherish it and no one on Earth would or could stop him from doing that.

With a departing wave, two fingers to his forehead, he vanished in an instant.

Lucinance Residence

Touching down, Relon was immediately greeted by another welcome sight.

Casually scrolling on their phone, lazily seated atop the staircase, sat a girl. Pink skin, puffy hair a shade darker than her skin with yellow thin horns protruding outwards, eyes with black sclera and yellow irises, and a casual look on her face; before him lied Mina Ashido.

She seemed lost in whatever she was looking at. Likely pictures of people or outfits given what Relon has learned about her over their time together. She was an energetic girl, carefree in nature yet still cognitive of changes in atmospheres. She was kind to put it simply.

A kind friend he was thankful to have met during his reclusive stage. To think such a fateful encounter would lead to him revealing his past not once or twice, but three times. They say it gets easier overtime but for him, he'd argue that wasn't the case. Not for him at least.

Being in solitude was supposed to be how one got away from the human population so how was it that the moment he returned to Japan, he was found by three different parties three times in a row? He supposed his luck factor deteriorated drastically when touching down on Japanese soil.

Time waited for no one so with a single step, he made his presence known. Likely seeing him approach from her peripheral, Mina glanced up. Her once neutral expression warped, the corners of her lips arching into a grin. With a leap from the staircase to meet him, her hand raised.

Mirroring the gesture, his hand clapped against hers before embracing the girl.

"Welcome back," she murmured, feeling him nod in response before pulling back. "Alright, daylight's burning and we got things to do!" On a dime, her tender self was replaced with her usual bubbliness.

Following up the stairs, they stop before an apartment door. Looking to the girl rock in place expectantly, he relented pulling out a key before inserting as she impatiently turned the knob.

With a click and a push, it opened revealing the inside as they entered. His apartment was a decent size. A family room with a couch and some chairs facing a television. A connecting kitchen with a small bar. Down the hall lied two rooms and a bathroom.

Like Nezu had mentioned, his stuff had arrived. Well, what few things he still held dear at least. Those being a set of pictures from the past, impossible to be forgotten, neatly and carefully placed on a counter.

Three pictures. Two consisted of Relon with groups of people his age. His fellow survivors from that hellhole. The last, his most prized, held a young Relon with two others. The first was a girl with stark similarities to the boy. The other; a woman matching Relon's and the girl's own feature.

"Are these them?" Her voice was respectfully soft.

He nodded.

Of all people, literally anything in the world, he missed them the most. Their time had come too soon and he couldn't bring them back. The scars ran deep for he was the cause of their untimely demise. He was weak, he was ill skilled in controlling his abilities. His hands, his mouth, his entire body, was coated in blood. He could see it every time he looked in the mirror.

"They're both beautiful, Relon." He smiled.

He'd learned from the countless years of numerous mistakes. He was no longer weak. He knew his limitations, he knew what he could and could not do. He wouldn't allow another tragedy like that to occur. Not when he had the power to stop it.

With a tender squeeze of her hand, he smiled his thanks.

Before long, he had sorted out his bedroom. There was scarcely anything but that was how he preferred. Of course, his opinion when it came to decorum didn't matter in the slightest. Hence why he was now being "dragged" to do shopping.

Mina was ranting off idea after idea, not bothering to await any responses. As much as Relon was a fan of red and black, for both the obvious color taste reasons as well as more dark and personal ones, he didn't want his entire home to reek of the colors. It'd clash with the pre-placed furniture.

He never got a chance with his family to learn proper fashion as far as homes went so having Mina tend to it was a big help. He'd just have to make sure she didn't go overboard on any purple or pink colors. He supposed they were in the same boat in that regard. He loved red and black while she favored pink and purple.

"Aha!"

Thoughts halting, he saw Mina's still form facing a building. Following her gaze, his face blanched. She would take them to one of the fanciest looking places to buy stuff. He would guess that she just wanted to experience buying such high quality, super expensive, stuff.

"Card please~," she hummed with an outstretched hand, blinking affectionately.

Blinking in proper deadpan fashion, the added wiggle of her hips innocently did not deter the male. Whoever told her of his "unlimited" funds would pay.

"Come on, Rel~," she cooed, not even bothering to hide the eager grin on her face. "Would you rather have your room normal looking, full of cat stuff, or workout equipment?" At that, he shuddered.

Truly, Mina Ashido was something else.

With a muted sigh, he reached into his back pocket withdrawing his simple and small wallet. Drawing a black card, he gestured it towards her to retract when she reached out. Giving her a knowing look, she puffed out her cheek.

"I won't buy everything."

Relenting, he extended it once more to receive an appreciative smile before she grasped his hand heading inside.

He had to give credit where it was due, Mina was an expert in this field. He half expected her to go and start pointing stuff out to only then find something better. Instead, her eyes seemed calculating. Aisle by aisle, they moseyed through. Her eyes seemed to look over every object with a calculating eye.

He was honestly taken aback by her remarks on things such as the carpets and drapes. Comparing and contrasting not just looks but prices on simple things like towels gave him more to delve on whenever he'd shop next time.

The store had floor after floor of stuff and by the time they had explored all the options and purchased the selected goods, it was already dark out. With a huge bill not at all important and delivery instructions, they were off.

A huge breath eventually exuded from the pinkette, one well deserved for her hard work.

"That was fun," she beamed. "Though I'd be lying if I said I wasn't hungry after all that walking around." Her expectant look went noticed and this time he'd agree with her.

With a gesture of his hand, that was all she needed to see. Without hesitation, she was off with him close behind. Before Relon knew it, they were at the corner to the famous golden arches, or infamous depending on how people view the fast food rumors. Like that of their milkshake machines not working. He's personally experienced the "odd" phenomena a few times during his years of isolation around the world.

"Best way to make your bestie happy? Get her some Mickey D's," she beamed a thumbs up as they entered to eventually sit down. "When in doubt, just fry me," she notes holding said food item as Relon nods.

He's learned a lot about the opposite gender thanks to his family so learning the specifics on one individual from the very source was important to remember.

In hindsight, he's only gotten to know Mina's personality and basic likes and dislikes. Learning something as common as this was vital to their friendship. They'd be a lot closer now after all.

"So, you're fully enrolled at U.A. right?" He nods mid bite of his burger. "I'm jealous. You didn't have to fight those dumb robots. Not like they could have done anything to you. If anything, you'd have just kicked one into outer space or sent any to America or the middle of the ocean," she chuckled, not that she was wrong.

He heard that the machines during the entrance exams were mediocre in size except for the zero-pointer. Apparently, that one was Godzilla's size.

Relon shivered. The memories of fighting a dormant creature was something he didn't want to deal with ever again. Thankfully he had quelled its rage, sent it back to an isolated location humankind couldn't reach, and remained with the dormant beast until he felt like departing to a new destination.

"So we know you're in the hero course like me but I wonder which class you'll be in. A or B? Did Principal Nezu tell you?" He shook his head.

Honestly, Relon was indifferent to which. Both classes yielded the same result in the end. The only difference was Mina was in A so they'd be together more often if he ended up in her class. It'd be helpful given his "quiet nature" but he had simple ways to communicate if he had to.

"Darn, it'd be even more fun if we end up in the same class. Kirishima and the others would like you. Oh well, we'll just have to wait until Monday. Yay to the weekends!" Watching her pump a fist, he could only look on amused at the attention she drew as he did the same.

Not long after, both were back on the walk home with the starry night sky as their overseer.

"I'd say today was a good first day."

She wasn't wrong. The long and tedious chore of getting his home fixed up was done and he surely would have taken longer on his own. Aside from some grocery shopping, Relon could say he was set.

"I've always found strolling down the streets at night to be nice. Quiet atmosphere, beautiful stars; what's there not to like, am I right?" He nodded at that.

As a fellow night stroller himself, the tranquility of the safe night was always a setting he would adore, willingly becoming entranced with the spectacle each night would bring. Letting whatever thoughts lurk under the surface during the day and allowing them to breathe under the moonlight felt like a weight off his shoulders.

"Welp, here we are." True to Mina's words, one look and he recognized the Ashido Household. "Wanna greet mom and dad? Ya know I've been hyping you up since we last saw each other," she grinned.

The thought was tempting. Though if he were to, he'd likely be forced to politely accept more offerings by her mom. Nothing was wrong but after being hinted at all the crap he's been through, he could comfortably say Mina's mom immediately cherished his presence as though he was her own.

Did that mean he wanted to deal with all of that so late? Not to mention tend to more of Mina's antics? Hmm, maybe next time. There was still things he himself had to tend to before the night was over if he wanted to rest at a proper time.

With a polite shake of his head in tandem with an apologetic smile, her eyes drooped.

"Fine, but next time you have to. Deal?" He nodded. "Good. We'll tackle that tomorrow then," she grinned with a wink departing for the front door.

Wait. Was she joking or serious? He couldn't tell and that worried himself.

"Night, Relon! Sleep well~," she bid with a cheeky grin, aware of the conflict she gifted him. "Oh, and Relon?" His face perked from its troubled visage. "Seriously, welcome back. I missed you."

Just as how they had first reunited earlier, all he could see and feel was genuine compassion. A kindred soul happy to have another back in their lives. This could be said for both. Time apart after encountering the other had left a nagging hole, something neither particularly liked.

Yet, it was filled in by their presence, by the knowledge of knowing two friends were now together. Aware in the simple fact that they were capable of seeing the other, of experiencing a school life together, eagerly awaiting what adventures they'd have together.

Mouthing three simple words back, he smiled as did she.

"Night," she parted with, gently closing the door behind herself leaving him once again alone with the cool air and the bright blanket overhead.

Taking in the knowledge of his time with Mina and enrolling at U.A. would bring, he carefully placed two fingers upon his forehead. With one last glance at his friend's home, noticing her peek out a window, he smiled, waving before vanishing in an instant once again.

No longer would he live in the past. That was a promise he made not to himself but to those that saved him from the aftermath. His mind, body, and soul were damaged to what even he believed was beyond repair.

Yet, a small group of individuals slowly chipped away, instilling a new sense of understanding. Not all living things were born evil. Each soul had the potential to decide the outcome of their lives. No matter what, he had to remember that.

One look at the assortment of furniture made him smile. As he traced every object, he recalled doing a similar act when he was a child. Reprimanded by his late mother for "having to touch everything." Only to laugh when his sister did the exact same thing moments later.

Reaching his door, he inserted the key once more, opening it. Only now, he felt the familiar powers surge. With a raised hand as he backed away, each object became coated in a cyan hue. Lifting a finger, they floated. As if guiding themselves up the staircase, into the home they went.

With one last look at the full moon above, he too took shelter from it. Eager to not only organize his new home but even more so see tomorrow come.
