Summer has been far too unforgiving.
Knight's got a report pulled up on her computer's screen, but honestly? She can't concentrate because everything's hazy because it's too damn hot, even indoors! The current heatwave in D.C. seems unending and there's no escape, even indoors with the AC cranked up all the way. There hasn't been a peep from anyone working in the Budget or Facilities offices about keeping the AC running the whole time, either—things are that bad.
Also, there's neither hide nor hair of a blazer or tie in the office these days. Knight might recommend a switch to casual, the way the Hawaii office runs or she's heard the LA Special Ops office operates. She and Torres already have the t-shirts part down, and Parker and McGee gave up their blazers a few days ago when the mid-90s came to stay. The only thing she doesn't get is…
"How the hell can you still be drinking hot coffee right now?" she asks McGee, giving up on staring at her screen any longer.
Two other sets of eyes in the bullpen land on him, too, and McGee glances at them in turn. "This?" he says as he lowers his travel cup. "I, uh, just…" He frowns. "I'm trying, okay? It's not easy. Gibbs somehow always managed to drink this stuff year-round, but." His frown deepens. "I don't think a single one of us ever figured out how it keeps him cool in the summer. Ziva said it sort of made sense to her—"
"Ziva is from freaking Israel, where it's always summer, Tim," Torres groans. "She and Gibbs both are some kind of superhuman," he continues in hyperbole. "South of the border, we do the sane thing: drink water and eat ice-cream."
That's what plenty of people do, although the mention of something sweet and frozen sends Knight's eyes to her left. Her eyes briefly meet Parker's, and he offers her a small smile. It's not an ice-cream date, but his sweetness will have to hold her…
… …honestly, though, how are they supposed to work in these conditions? Knight pulls up a tab in her window, searching for the forecast, wishing for rain.
There's nothing but sunny skies for the next week.
Knight bites back a curse—
Suddenly, the fire alarms in NCIS go off, a split-second before the sprinklers do. McGee jumps to his feet as if electrocuted and starts yelping at everyone to shut things down and throw whatever cover they have, preferably waterproof, over equipment. Someone from Maintenance comes running up the stairs to alert their floor that, sorry, there isn't a fire, it's just the system tripping from the high temperatures and something faulty going off. The activity in the office doesn't stop, but it slows down a little once everyone realizes they're all just waterlogged (but no longer overheated) workers in the same metaphorical boat.
The artificial rain continues, and everyone's still concerned with evacuating in light of the water damage. Torres turns McGee away from the disastrous scene that is the bullpen, and they exit with the main throng of fellow agents. "I think I'll go relay Maintenance's announcement to anyone who missed it," Parker tells Knight when he gestures in the direction opposite the stairs, back towards the interview rooms and smaller offices.
"It'll be faster with two of us," Knight states, and she falls into step with him, acknowledging that he does have a point…
…but she and Parker check a few rooms, all empty, before she feels his hand slide down her left wrist when the reach the end of the hallway. She smiles as Parker gently spins her to face him, and Knight turns that smile in towards his palm when he reaches up with his other hand to brush back some soaked locks from her face. Then she leans up and forward, turning faulty sprinklers into an opportunity and kissing Parker.
Parker's mind must've gone right there once they knew there was no emergency, because he threads his fingers through her hair and keeps going, wanting more even when Knight chuckles against his lips, pausing for breath. "Can you blame me for being greedy?" he asks. A second later, the sprinklers shut off. He huffs, red-faced.
Knight laughs and rests her forehead against his scruffy chin. "No…but if we idle, the others are going to wonder if we ever made it out of here, even for a pseudo-emergency."
"Fair enough," he concedes, and he leads her by the hand to the nearest stairwell, reluctant to let her go even once there.

:3c Smthg silly bc summer's too hot! *mew iz a winter bby* My remaining thoughts for this are: Making out is not a way to cool off, *lol*. Parker also prolly wants a redo, a proper kiss in the rain, bc I envision him to be smthg of a romantic… Also, this team hopefully will plan for the future if they haven't already, bc when I wrote this, all I could think was "omfg the water damage could rly ruin not just the team's things but NCIS ugh :c" SO. Bonus hc: I like to think Parker decides to buy McGee some emergency tarps or smthg so a) McGee doesn't freak out so bad if the sprinklers go off again and b) bc Parknight (and, okay, technically Torres, too, but I DIGRESS) weren't much use to him and had their minds elsewhere… ;3
