Word quickly gets around the office that McGee's writing again, and it's cause for the extra smile or thumb's up from some personnel and a wayward glance from others.
It also means a visit from Ducky, out for a walk from the NCIS annals. He times it just right when McGee and Delilah are absent from the bullpen and down in Kasie's lab, and he spares Knight and Parker a commiserating look when Torres waxes poetic about how excellent a choice he'd be for McGee's next action hero.
"Interesting that Nicholas wants a character based on himself," the good doctor murmurs to Parker and Knight, the latter who stands close to Parker's desk and well within earshot.
Knight shrugs but grins. "Are you really that surprised, Ducky? But Jimmy praised McGee's books, too, so maybe it…kinda sounds like fun?"
Ducky raises his eyebrows here, which has the other two doing a double-take. "Really? I'm more curious that Dr. Palmer supports Timothy's prose endeavors after—well." He stops short and averts his eyes. It's rare that something leaves Ducky speechless or is that difficult for him to explain. Nevertheless, he chuckles awkwardly instead and musters a smile for Parker and Knight and even tips his head to Torres before leaving precisely the same way he came.
Knight folds her arms across her chest and twists around towards Parker. She jerks her chin at the absent historian. "What was that?"
Parker shrugs. "I'm guessing we'd have to read to find out."
Torres, meanwhile, has realized he's been ignored long enough and heaves a large sigh. "Agh, ignore Ducky's warnings. McGee's books are entertaining!"
"I still don't want a character based on me," Parker retorts with a shake of his head.
Torres nods. "I…can understand your caution, given the way McGee wrote about the team previously."
At this, both Knight and Parker prick up their ears.
"Yeah, McGee told me he thought it was fiction at the time, but the book covered a lot of Tony and Ziva, and we know where their story led. McGee seems to pick up on things, y'know?" But this last bit he says with a smirk, which lingers as he looks between them.
Knight glares at Torres and Parker settles him with a dry look, so the impish fellow laughs it off and turns away to fuss with something on his own desk.
Still…
Even without an audience, Knight doesn't hurry from her cozy spot on the edge of Parker's desk. If anything, Ducky's and especially Torres' commentary make her glance Parker's way—
It turns out Parker's thinking the same thing, and they accidentally catch each other's eye. He holds her gaze for one, two heartbeats. Then, just as quickly, they break the contact at the same time.
Because Ducky's and Torres' commentary is just that: commentary. And whatever McGee decides to write… Fiction is just that: fiction.
Right?

Mannn, "Higher Education" absolutely SENT me when McGee brought up Gemcity again…but having Jimmy approve of him writing again? In what universe?! Jimmy never liked his portrayal, so that srsly left me scratching my head… But, from the Tiva perspective, I have a Parknight interest in this, *lol*.
