MARRY ME

"I'm confused" Maddie said, "I'm so confused", I just wish someone would tell me what to do". Sam took this opportunity to help her end her confused state of mind. "Okay", "do this", "Marry me".

Maddie stared into Sam's eyes, realizing that he had just asked her to marry him, out of the blue. Her mind raced for a reply to his proposal, "Sam, this is quite sudden, don't you think", and I'm so tired I can't even think straight, not to mention I have a throbbing headache". "Lets sleep on this decision, okay"? Sam nodded and replied, "Okay", "That's fair". "Why don't you go to bed while I clean up the kitchen and put the food away". I'll meet you upstairs in a bit". They went in opposite directions with opposite thoughts running through their minds.

Sam went into the kitchen and pulled the Lamb out of the oven to wrap it in aluminum foil and put it in the refrigerator. As he was cleaning up, his thoughts went to the events of the last few minutes. He didn't like the fact that Maddie had come home after being with David and all he got was a kiss on the cheek, but what really bothered him was that she had to think about his proposal , this was absurd to him. "I'm offering her a wonderful life, a future", he thought. "What is she afraid of"? His mind then went to David. "She can't possibly be hung up on him". He shook his head and chuckled, "He is so out of her league". "He couldn't possibly think he has a chance with her". "She just needs time to realize that marrying me is the best decision she could ever make". He finished his chores and climbed the stairs to Maddie's bedroom, confident that eventually she would say yes to him.

When Sam went into the kitchen Maddie turned to go upstairs to her room. She walked up the stairs in a trance, her head swirling with thoughts. In the course of two days her world had been turned upside down. Her head was hurting so she went into her bathroom, took some aspirin and got into her nightgown. She lied on her bed, closed her eyes but instead of being thrilled that Sam wanted to marry her, she thought of David. "What did he want to tell me at the restaurant". "I know he was lying that it was about Mr. Viola". "I have to find out if he loves me", she thought, but then wondered "Why"? What would it matter if he did. He was loud and lewd and frustrated her on every level, and yet, she couldn't deny the fact that she always looked forward to Mondays because the weekends seemed too long without seeing him. She thought about the kiss in the garage and how it had stirred a feeling in her that she had never felt before and how her heart broke at the idea of maybe never seeing him again when he was going 'underground'. Maddie's stomach hurt when she thought about how she almost lost him to Jillian and how frightened she was when he left for New York, that he may reconnect with his ex-wife. Could she really marry Sam and never think about David ever again and what did she really feel about Sam? "I know he would offer me a comfortable life with children and stability". "Isn't that what I want"? Her mind was reeling trying to dissect all these options. "Before I can make a decision, I need answers." Maddie started to feel trapped and suddenly panicked as she heard Sam come up the stairs. At that moment Maddie decided on what she was going to do. She moved as close to the edge of the bed as she could without falling off, lying on her side with her back to the center pretending she was fast asleep. She felt Sam slip in beside her and was thankful he decided not to cuddle her. Eventually she heard him snoring and she was ready to spring into action.

After about 15 minutes, Maddie quietly slid out of the bed trying not to make a noise to wake Sam. She opened her bedroom door, took a look at Sam making sure he was still asleep and slipped out. She went to her downstairs closet, donned her raincoat and sneakers, and then realized she had never been to David's apartment. It took her a few minutes to find her address book, worrying that with each passing minute that she was still there, Sam would wake up and find her sneaking out of the house. Maddie quietly opened and closed her front door and started her car hoping the sound of the motor didn't wake Sam even though, at that moment, she didn't care if it did. She was out of the house and could finally breathe, not being smothered by Sam who was pressuring her to make a commitment to him that she wasn't sure she was ready for. One thing was certain, she wasn't going to mention to David that Sam proposed. "That is none of his business".

Maddie drove faster than she ever had before, hoping that she was finally going to get the answers she needed from David, answers that would help clarify her situation. "I have to know what he was going to tell me", "what his true feelings for me are". Maybe I should just say "Do you love me"? "What then", she thought. "What do I say in return", "what if he asks me if I love him". "Do I"? She wondered. "If he had only told me the truth this morning when I asked him what was so important last night, instead of making up that story about Mr. Viola, I wouldn't be in this predicament". "I hate you David Addison" and with that thought Maddie flew up David's stairs to his apartment and banged on his door till she heard him:

"Yeah"...

"David"...

"Maddie"...

At that moment, Maddie's heart beat faster as she heard David unlock his door. This would definitely be a turning point in both their lives and whatever that was, she hoped she was ready. David opened the door and she burst in.

"What were you gonna tell me that night you interrupted my dinner with Sam?"...
