District Court. Defendant's Lobby Nº2
15:00 AM. Afternoon.
—
— Today was rough as well. — Phoenix said as he entered the defendant's lobby alongside Maya.
— Yeah, and considering how our client weren't that helpful, I dare to say something's very wrong. If we could, I'd suggest jumping out of this sinking boat but…
— I know… We're too involved to just turn our backs at this point now. Besides, I'm fairly sure if we weren't involved, we'll be dragged away, in a way or in another… I'm sorry about that, Maya…
— Nah, don't worry, Nick. That's no one's fault. Considering how tricky this case is… — Maya said as she pondered how dangerous that case was.
—Still… I should've measured the danger we've involved… I'm sorry.
— Actually, I'm the one who should be sorry, Wright-san.
Sae came from the corridor with a visible worried frown. Maya knew she was deeply regretful of all that situation and despite her raging jealously was trying to take control over her, she knew she needed to be mature and swallow her pride to understand their actual situation.
— I… Only asked you to defend Masahiro-san, but I never expected this case to take such a turn of events. For that, I'm sorry. I put you and Fey-san under danger and I…
Phoenix raised a hand as he shook his head.
— Ms. Niijima, it's all right. Is no one's fault. — He replied as he simply looked at Maya.
— Yeah. You couldn't know that will happen. — The medium replied as she bailed her fists determined.
— *sigh* I know, but still…
Phoenix sighed and he grabbed the platinum-haired woman by her shoulders.
— Sae, look. There is no way you could know about that. And even if you knew, you know we'll get involved in a way or in another. Remember, we're friends and that relationship could've been explored by them.
Maya nodded with vehemency.
— Yeah! Besides, I'm sure Nick will get involved even if you haven't asked for his help. Knowing him, he might will do something stupid as jumping from a high place. — Maya said with a wicked smirk.
— *sigh* Your lack of faith in me Maya is profoundly disturbing. — Phoenix said in dismay.
Maya laughed.
— Well, I'm the one who's keeping an eye on you, so I don't have much faith of you keeping your physical integrity.
— I was being sarcastic about that, d'you know? — Phoenix mumbled annoyed. Maya didn't have heard him as she only laughed at Phoenix childish attitude.
— Aww, don't be like that, Nick. I know you'd do this for the others. My hero!
Sae laughed and she looked at Phoenix.
— Once a hero, always a hero, despite you quoted a famous villain, isn't that right, Darth Vader?
— For your information Vader is an awesome villain, and the fact he was portrayed by David Prowse, a talented actor and voiced by James Earl Jones, makes him even more awesome. That said, I'd expect some respect here for being at least a cultured artist and lawyer. Now then…
Sae face changed into a serious frown and Maya knew now it was business time.
— Masahiro sudden change of behavior… That was unexpected. Considering all the recent facts that happened…
— Yeah, or he's guilty, or the most probable he's threatened by them. I checked his profile from the very minute details, and I can say, that guy is clean as a new white sheet of paper. That said, something's off. Something very off…
— Doesn't Mr. Masahiro have a family? — Maya asked.
Sae nodded.
— Even so, threatening them is a very risking move, unless…
— Unless Masahiro himself get caught in a huge scandal, a scandal big enough to let them unprotect.
Sae blanched.
— Those bastards! They didn't…
— I believe that's the most probable scenario. — Phoenix confirmed, as he felt a knot in his throat. He felt his hands trembling in anger. — That said…
Sae looked at the door and rushed away.
— Why she gets so rushed after…
Maya didn't got time to complete her question as Phoenix rushed after Sae, understanding why she was so desperate. Once Maya saw Phoenix face, she understood what was happening.
— Oh, shit!
—
Detention Center. Visitor Room.
15:20 AM. Afternoon.
—
— Hello, Niijima-san. Why—
— Your family are in danger, right?! — Sae exclaimed as she pounded the bench in desperation.
Masahiro was stunned as Phoenix arrived at the place and slammed the pixel glass, scaring the man.
— Mr. Masahiro! Your family are being coerced, correct? — Phoenix asked.
Masahiro looked at both and the man only nodded, not knowing what do to.
— Yes… And…
— You weren't the only one… — Phoenix said completing the man phrase.
Maya blanched in horror.
— Pearly! — Maya exclaimed.
— Makoto! — Sae yelled as she desperately took her phone and called Makoto.
— Oh my—!
— Dammit! — Phoenix cursed as he took his phone and called Miles.
— Edgeworth speaking. Wright, what's the pro—
— Ken Masahiro and his family are being coerced by Shido's minions. And considering the actual situation… — Phoenix said cutting Miles.
— Dammit! I'll call the Interpol and the Japanese Police to protect Ms. Niijima relatives and her friends. Wright, keep them safe. I'll call Gumshoe and Franziska to protect you as well. She's working with the Interpol, so she can help us with this situation. — Miles said.
— Got it. We need that ASAP… No, we need them right now!
— I'll see what I can do… Dammit, the timing can't be worse…
— I sorely agree… I'll send them soon as I can.
— Thank you, Miles.
Miles ended the call and Phoenix looked at Sae who was in a call with Makoto.
— Makoto are you all, right?!
— Yes, Sis. I am. I saw the news, so I called Hasegawa-san and explained the situation. Him and his boss already granted me protection and to everyone else. — Makoto said from the other side of the line.
Sae sighed in relief, and she looked at Phoenix and Maya.
— About him… — Makoto said.
— They're all right as well, despite the attempts.
— I see… Well, please keep yourself safe, okay? I don't want you to get hurt.
— Likewise. I'll end the call now. Be safe.
— You too, Sis. Bye Sis.
— Bye.
Sae ended the call and Phoenix looked at her.
— Are you all, right? — He asked worriedly.
— I will be once that's over.
Phoenix only nodded and looked at Maya.
— I hate to say that, but we'll need to investigate together one more time.
Maya grumbled, but she nodded in agreement.
— I know that's not the best scenario, but considering our actual situation...
— Yeah...
Phoenix sighed.
— Dammit! When I thought things will be all right...
— But they weren't, right?
They turned at the mysterious voice and saw Masahiro looked at them with a wry smile and a defeated face. Sae as quickly she assumed a fighting stance, she relaxed as she saw who was.
— Masahiro-san. — Sae said.
— Fey-san. — Masahiro replied. — Funny, never saw you so ready to attack someone.
— Considering our actual situation...
— True... Well, what can I do for you?
— At this point, nothing. Considering they have all the strings attached, it's far too late to do anything to stop them, at least... That's what I've thought.
Sae yelped surprised after hearing that.
— Yes, that is true they are coercing my family, thus leaving me without any options. But you two, kept fighting no matter what might will happen to you two. That said, it embarrasses me the fact I've—
— Honestly, Mr. Masahiro, there's nothing of being ashamed of. You were protecting your family.
— Even though I...
Phoenix sighed as he cracked his neck.
— Masahiro-san, your family is your priority. If you abandon them, then who will help them. I know you are desperate, but that's your family safety at the hand. You can't simply take a decision right away. That said... We need to find a way to find the culprit and fast.
— Even if that's the case, how you will plan do to this? — Masahiro asked.
— I'm not sure, but we'll do it. In a way or in another. — Phoenix said.
— We? — Masahiro asked confused.
— We? — Maya asked confused as well.
— I, Sae, Maya and everyone will find the truth. That is what I can promise to you.
Masahiro bowed and spoke.
— Thank you, Wright-san. I hope you can fulfill your promise.
Masahiro was escorted back to his cell at the Detention Center and Phoenix looked to Maya.
— We need to wait. Edgeworth said we'll be escorted, since he's...
Maya went silent for a moment before she replies:
— I see...
— Now... Let's wait...
—
Detention Center. Entrance.
15:30 AM. Afternoon.
—
Ten minutes later, Phoenix received a message from Edgeworth, saying he had arrived with the escort. Signalizing to Maya and Sae, he went to the entrance when he saw Miles with someone he never met before.
— Tch. That pigeon over there is the one we need to protect. — The man with a wolfish attitude asked Edgeworth, who only grunted in annoyance.
— He's my friend, and besides, if I recall correctly, you were the one who wanted to meet him.
— Until now. Seeing that pathetic loser over there it makes me laugh.
The wolf style man laughed, and Phoenix only ignored him, as he went forwards to Miles' direction.
— Hello Edgeworth. — Phoenix said.
— Wright. — Miles replied. — It's nice to see you in one piece.
— Me too. Me too. — Phoenix glanced over the man at Miles' right. — And your friend is...?
The man laughed.
— Name's Shi Long Lang, but you can call me Lang.
— Phoenix Wright, at your disposal.
— Likewise... — Lang replied surprised, then he laughed. — Guess I was mistaken! The man here is far more respectful than you, Prosecutor Edgeworth! — Lang said as his subordinates laughed.
— Hmph. As you lack respect is something amusing for the others... — Edgeworth retorted.
— That's RICH from someone who called me an uncultured swine to that old hag.
Lang laughed again and Edgeworth mumbled in annoyance.
— Sorry for that. I usually despise attorneys.
Phoenix holds a sigh and only smiled at him.
— Can't blame though. Everyone has their reasons to hate something. — Phoenix replied. — Well, I'm sure you know about our situation. — Phoenix said pointing to Sae and Maya.
— Yeah, not the best scenario, huh?
— But thank God it's far from the worst.
— Agreed. That said... Ms. Niijima, right.
Sae approached and she bowed to Lang.
— Sae Niijima.
To Edgeworth shock, Lang bowed back, and he gave his business card.
— Shi Long Lang. Interpol. Nice to meet you.
— Likewise. — Was Sae reply.
— Odd, you resemble a lot like sister...
— Sister? — Phoenix asked confused.
— Franziska von Karma. She's my sister by bonds.
Phoenix smirked and he nods.
— I see. I can relate with that.
Lang looked at him and Maya confused.
— But I thought...
Phoenix shook his head.
— No. Maya thinks I'm an old fart anyway...
— Hey! — Maya yelled. Lang laughed again.
— If you're saying so. Guess your brother could be wrong sometimes...
— All of us my friend. All of us...
Lang turned away and walked.
— Well, time to get to the crime scene, right? We need to hurry. The car is waiting for us.
Phoenix, Maya and Sae followed the Interpol agent to his car. A luxurious sedan was waiting for them.
— Wow... — Maya gasped in awe.
— That's an IS 300 Lexus. That's the car I normally use here. Now then, let's get in and move on.
They enter the car and Lang started the engine. Then he moved the car to their destination.
Miles looked around his surroundings as he walked down the street, going to the parking lot. The words of Godot were still disturbing his thoughts, messing with his mind.
"You are just Von Karma lapdog."
— Lapdog… Tch!
Miles was so absolved in his thoughts he noticed someone pulling the edge of the suit. Miles mumbled something as he turned to deal with the person who was bothering him.
— Yes? — He said, not avoiding hiding his annoyance.
— Edgey-poo! Why are you ignoring me!?
He gasped in shock and once Wendy Oldbag tried to hug him; he ran way like the devil ran from the cross.
"That was the last thing I needed to deal with today!" The poor magenta prosecutor thought as he ran through down the street. During his run, he cursed Godot all the time inside his head.
"That dammed bastard! Because of him I wasn't thinking straight and—"
Miles's line of thought was interrupted when someone pulled him fast enough to make Wendy Oldbag to lose him from her sight. He saw her rushing forward like a raging bull, lost in her twisted desire.
— Edgey-poo! Where are you!? — She exclaimed.
Miles sighed in relief as he simply saw his stalker going far away from him.
— I owe you something...
— You do indeed.
Miles was taken aback by the person voice. He knew it was a woman voice, but he never heard a voice smooth as velvet. Turning at the voice owner direction, he was surprised to see a gorgeous woman with platinum hair, blue velvet dress and golden eyes. The woman was shocked to see Miles as well, as well she was impressed to see a handsome man in front of her.
— Hello. — She said.
— Hello... — He replied.
Miles was lost in her trance, as she looked at him with curiosity and awe. After a long minute, she cleaned her throat, ending that almost awkward situation between them.
— So... Thank you for saving me. You had a great timing. — Miles said.
— Oh, it's nothing. I'm here to help the ones in need. Especially someone so distraught like you, Mr. Miles Edgeworth.
— I'm sorry, but how do you know my name?
— The Tarot told me. You know how the cards can predict the possible futures, right?
Miles gave the woman a skeptical glance and she laughed.
— And there is a fascinating technology called television, which shows the news. Your name is the top topic on the newest issues, you know that?
Miles laughed.
— It seems my fame proceeds me. Public Prosecutor Miles Edgeworth, at your service. — The man said bowing to her.
— Margaret, fortune teller and aid, at your service as well.
Miles looked at the woman lost in her unnatural beauty and as he looked at her, his mind had only one thought.
"What a gorgeous woman. I never saw someone like her..."
— Mr. Edgeworth? Are you all, right? — Margaret called.
— My deepest apologies! I don't know what happened to me. — He humbly apologizes as he felt his cheeks burn in embarrassment. He never expected to be caught red-handed like that. That made him realize he never felt like that before, and never acted likewise either, which made his question.
"Since when I started to act like that? I never acted like that before..."
As he was lost in thought, he was quickly snapped out of it when a hand touched his cheek and, looking at him with a concerned face.
— Is everything okay?
Miles gently touched her hand and took off from his face.
— Yes, yes, I am. I'm just... tired. That's all.
"Great excuse, Miles. It's obvious she'll see that's a half-ass lie."
If Margaret knew or not, she only shrugged, saying:
— I see... Well, it seems you are safe now.
— Yeah. I cannot thank you enough for what you did for me. How can I replay you?
— R-Repay me!?
— Please don't take it at the wrong way! It just... My father had taught me it's only fair to repay with gratitude for the kindness of other people. So please, tell me how I can replay you.
Margaret gave a curious look as she looked at him and then she tapped her lips with her index finger, in thought.
— Well... If you're willing to repay for my kindness, then can you attend a fortune reading session? — She asked.
— ...What?
— You see... I work as a fortune teller, and lately a client of mine cancelled one of our sessions, and I was ready to give up, but you appeared, so...
Miles couldn't help but to let a scoff to escape from his lips, followed by a laugh. He simply couldn't belief what he had heard.
— I'm sorry, but you want to give me a fortune reading?! My deepest apologies, but that is somewhat hilarious.
— What!? — Margaret exclaimed.
— I was the one who suggested to repay you, and now you want to do a fortune reading to me? Not I am complaining, far from it, but that's the total opposite of what I had suggested.
— Excuse me, sir! But I do not want to me mocked by you!
— I'm not mocking, but...
— DO you think fortune telling is a scan, just because your precious science can explain everything, correct?
Miles was taken aback.
"D-Did... Did she..."
— How...?
— Judging by your attitude is rather obvious. Besides, you are in no position in judge me for what I do for living just because you don't believe it.
Miles was beetroot. That woman wasn't Franziska, but her words alone was enough to whip him to death for embarrassment. No one dared to scold him like that, no one expect for his father. Gregory Edgeworth when necessary was harsh enough to hold him back to his place. It was at that moment Miles realized, somehow, she has some power over him.
"Well, talk about stay between a rock and a hard place..." He thought. "Heh, all those years and no woman caught me like her, that I need to admit."
Miles mentally chuckled with that thought. "Of all the woman..."
Margaret was eying him with curiosity once again, watching his reactions, looking forward for his answer.
"She has a point though. As much as I don't believe in that, I owe her one."
— What's wrong? You don't want to do it? If that's the case, then I'll call that oldbag back. I think I saw her around.
Miles yelped and Margaret laughed. He stopped to look at her. She was so careless and free, unlike him.
"And her laughter is beautiful..."
That line of thought made Miles yelp silently. Since when he found that woman in front of him that attractive? He doesn't know, but he knows he needed to give her an answer and fast. He was trying to say anything, without avail.
"Since when I get tongue-tied!?" He exclaimed to himself.
— What's wrong? You're perhaps... Tongue-tied?
Miles yelped and Margaret giggled.
— How...
— I'm just guessing by your expression! It's so easy to read you!
She giggled again and Miles knew she wasn't a normal woman. He mentally chuckled.
"Since when I met a normal woman? Then again, she made an offer, and I can't be rude to her."
— Very well, I do accept your offer.
— Is that so? I'm glad.
— As long you don't tell that old hag where I am.
— That was a joke.
— Please don't joke with something so serious like that! That woman, she like superglue and it's an annoyance to get rid of her!
Margaret laughed.
— Don't worry. I'd rather annoy my father than let a man in distress like you suffer like that.
— Thank you. I'm also do appreciate if you don't pull a joke like that, okay?
Margaret giggled again.
— Don't worry, my sense of humor is sillier than you might think.
Miles smirked.
— Then enlightened me. I'm sure you can illuminate the situation.
Margaret laughed.
— I usually pull several puns like that. My father hates it. Especially when I mock him about his nose.
Edgeworth couldn't help but to give a small chuckle at that comment.
— It seems you're full of victims.
— I do have several. Including my clients. What can I say, I'm a teasing woman.
— I'm sure of that.
Reaching a small metallic desk, Margaret sat in one of the chairs placed around and Miles took the other in front of her.
— Very well, I will explain how that works: I'll dispose the cards on the table, and I follow the Arcana's that appears to us, do you understand?
— Yes, I do.
— Very well. Let's start then.
Margaret placed the cards on the table and displayed on the table "The Fool" Arcana on them.
— Let's start. Hum... This is rather interesting. Your Arcana...
— What do mean? — He asked.
— The Arcana that rules your life and you as a living being. It's the Fool Arcana.
Miles frowned after hearing that.
— What does that mean? — He asked. Margaret chuckled.
— Don't worry, that's not a bad thing. It's the opposite.
— The opposite...?
— Yes. The Fool Arcana is the most powerful arcana due to its case. It's the first arcana, but it's often numberless or it was the number zero. That leads to infinity possibilities, thus infinity potential.
— I see... But why it's upside-down?
— When the arcana is upside-down, or reversed as we say, that doesn't mean a bad thing, but that indicates you are dealing with difficulties in your life. You're ready to move, but you still have doubts about yourself and your beliefs. Am I right?
Miles only nodded in agreement as he simply looked at the woman in disbelief. He never expected of hearing how she was right in pointing his actual situation. Margaret revealed another card. This time was "The Tower".
— The tower. It's upright. That's interesting as well. The tower is a strong building with weak foundations. Once its hit by a lightning, it falls apart. When upright, this card shows you are dealing with a grand changing, you're not at your safety zone anymore. That said, that change bothers you, as you are unaware of how to continue.
Once again, Margaret was right. He never expected such accuracy from her and yet she was right. That was exactly like when Maya channeled Mia and proved to him Spirit Channeling wasn't a scam. That said, Margaret revealed "The Star" arcana reversed.
— Hum... That's troubling... The Star arcana is reversed.
— Is that a terrible thing?
— Usually yes, but it's not as you think. The star it's the representation of Hope and the overcome of the adversities that life can bring to you. When reversed shows the lack of faith/belief of... the absence of it. That dangerous, because without a belief, you can't live your life in the fullest.
"I'm shocked to see how right she is... Her reading is perfectly right."
Margaret revealed "The Death" arcana upright and Miles flinched. Margaret giggled at his reaction.
— Please don't worry. The death arcana is one of the most positive arcana's of the tarot.
— Huh? How?
Margaret giggled again.
— This arcana symbolized the ending of a major phase of an important aspect of your life. But also, it shows a transformation, something in you has changed. It's upright, so there is more than hope, but it shows you're lost at this point of your life. You need help, help and guidance to move forward and you can understand that.
Miles was in awe. Her reading with the Tarot was perfect. He only waited for her to reveal the last card. It was "The Lovers" arcana upright and Margaret blushed as she saw the card.
— The lovers? — Miles asked unsure.
— Yes... This arcana symbolizes the bonds you share. That's not limited by romantic bonds, but... at this case...
— It means that?
— Yes. All your bonds you share, and you value are helping you to overcome this moment of adversity. However, about romance... You don't feel you need it... at least it was according to this reading.
— That's accurate. Your entire reading was correct. — Miles admitted, then he looked at her. — Though, if your readings are correct, then...
— It seems so. — Margaret replied with a smile.
— How can you be so sure?
— The cards never lie. Though the future can change. We always are changing the future, so the cards will change, though there are certain fixed point we had to deal during life. Or you can ignore it like always.
Her smile was captivating, and Miles couldn't help but to wonder how many secrets she holds from him. But at the same time, he was scared about how correct she was at the reading. He is hopeful he can change things, all his life he did that, even he took some risks over his life to archive the results he wanted. Then Manfred von Karma took him everything and gave him a new purpose, a purpose that will lead him to his death if wasn't for Phoenix. Then he started his journey to find himself, but even now there wasn't any visible results. He felt hopeless because he can't know that the future waits for him and he's worried about how he can proceed.
— The future can change, huh?
— Yes. But as it can change to better, it can change for worse. All it takes it's the determination to do so.
Margaret smile and Miles smiled back to her. He felt at least hopeful he could see her again. Then an idea crossed his mind. Taking his notepad and a pen, he quickly made a note.
— I'm sorry, but what...
Edgeworth extended a paper and Margaret looked surprised at him.
— Wha...
— That's my number. My personal number. You can call me if you want to talk.
Margaret chuckled and smiled at him.
— Your notepad, please. I'll give you, my number.
Miles gave her his notepad and pen and she noted down her number.
— If you want another fortune telling... or do just talk... if you want.
Miles smiled.
— I'll call. Now, if you excuse me...
Miles went his way but before he takes the turn, Margaret grabbed his hand.
— Wha...?
— You should take the other street. That will make you avoid a certain nuisance.
Miles smiled.
— I take you consulted the cards before, right?
Margaret smiled.
— Perhaps. Good luck, Mr. Edgeworth.
— Likewise, Miss Margaret.
Miles did as Margaret told, and she resumed her fortune reading. She heard a melancholic sigh from someone.
— I take he's the one, right? — A calm and soothing voice asked, and her smile widened.
— It's seeming so, father. You know the Arcana's doesn't lie.
A laugh came from Margaret's father.
— Indeed. As the resident of the Velvet Room, it was the first time I saw you that happy towards someone. Even with that guest you haven't been that happy.
— Yes, Master Igor, though he does something with me I cannot explain. He makes me happier.
A chuckle escaped from Igor lips.
— It seems my daughter is growing.
— Though I'm afraid of leaving you. — Margaret said, her lips trembling in fear.
Igor shook his head.
— Margaret, I created you all to go towards your own paths, to live your lives and understand humankind. To do so, you need to leave the Velvet Room one day. Of course, you will return, but you need to live your life by our own self, not only to serve me.
— But father, you are my creator. How can't I be grateful for what you did for me?
— Of course, you can be grateful, but you need to take new experiences, live out of the shell you created.
— But how? How can I do that? — She asked.
Igor stopped, then he gave a sympathetic smile to Margaret.
— You live to take a leap of faith. Like him, you are lost as well.
Margaret gasped and then she smiled.
— I see...
— You will know what you'll need to do. Until then, live your life at your fullest.
— I will, father.
— Now if you excuse me, Lavenza and I need to help one of our guests.
Igor went to the Velvet Room and Margaret smiled.
— Miles Edgeworth...
—
Marche Hotel. Room 782.
Afternoon.
—
Back at the hotel, Phoenix, Maya and Sae arrived at the room 782. Phoenix sighed in frustration as he saw the scene, untouched since the murder.
— Dammit! — He exclaimed annoyed. — Never thought that case will be that complicated...
— And considering our actual situation... — Sae commented.
— Yeah... Not the best-case scenario, huh... — Maya said. — Well... time to check everything again, I guess...
— But what we can check here even more? — Sae pondered.
— That's the question, huh?
Sae smiled and Maya noticed she was looking at her.
— Well, we need to find out together, right? — Sae asked.
— Right! — Maya replied with a smile.
Phoenix was happy to see Maya going along with Sae. That scene alone made his smile.
"At least one good thing is happening here." He thought. Sighing, he looked around before resuming his investigation. "That'll take a while... Time to get back to work..."
The trio resumed their search, and they spent two hours checking every nook-and-crank of the room without finding anything. That alone frustrated both Phoenix and Sae to a point even Maya felt their tension. She knew the stakes has been raised higher than before and one false step will lead to possible death. That said, she knew she needed to do something, but what?
— Nick, Ms. Niijima...
— Yes? — Both replied without any motivation.
— Can we take a break? Getting ourselves stressed to work will not do any favors to the case.
Phoenix pondered but Sae sighed frustrated as she nodded in agreement.
— Honestly, I must agree. Getting stressed due to that will not help us; We're already in great danger and that alone is a massive source of stress. We must take a short rest and check our safety.
— Okay...
Phoenix left the room, and he went to the restroom to clean his face and check himself. After cleaning his face thoroughly, he looked at himself.
"Man... I'm looking horrible." Phoenix thinks. Bags under his eyes, a tired expression, even his body was trembling slightly due to all the stress. Of all the things, he really needed a break.
"Great, I'm beat like shit..."
Phoenix heard his phone rang and he fished from his pocket to see who it was. The number of Miles appeared on the screen.
— Hello, Phoenix Wright speaking.
— You know that's me, so you don't need to be that formal.
— Geez, Miles Edgeworth cutting out all the formalities. I'm shocked! — Phoenix replied.
— Yeah... Kind of a new milestone I was trying to reach...
Phoenix knew at that moment something was wrong with his friend, and that might not be a good thing.
— Also, I looked at my earlier cases, and something called my attention. Remember that letter you sent to analysis? Well, that name was familiar to me, so I looked for the records and...
— It's a hit.
— Yes. Want to meet me at my office? Considering your situation, at my place will be safe for us.
— Okay. I'll warn Sae and Maya about my exit.
— You called Ms. Niijima by her first name.
Phoenix rolled his eyes in annoyance.
— Miles, please, she's my friend...
— Just a friend?
— Miles, please, don't bring such assumptions...
That statement called Miles' attention. It was the same thing he usually said about Maya, though that type of annoyance was different. With Maya was a full denial, as he was annoyed to be implicated to get into a relationship with her, but with Sae was different, it was almost like he was hiding something, and he was too tired to argue.
— If you are saying so. I'll be waiting for you. Want me to send you escort.
— There's no need. I'll take a taxi and arrive there soon.
— As long as you don't get into trouble...
Phoenix laughed.
— I'm already in trouble if you forget.
— True. Well, see you later.
— See you later.
Phoenix ended the call and looked towards the mirror, checking his reflection one more time. He desperately needed some vacation. Perhaps going to the beach or somewhere else far away from the courts. He really needed a break, especially after that case. Exiting the bathroom, he warned the two women about his visit to the Prosecution's Office, and he walked to the Main Entrance of the hotel as he called for a taxi.
—
Public Prosecution Office. Room 1202.
Afternoon.

Phoenix arrived at Mile's office, and he found the man reading thoroughly some files he had in his left hand. He was pinching the bridge of his nose with his other hand, visibly tired. Phoenix knocked on the door and he saw Miles turning at him.
— You look terrible, Wright.
— It seems I'm not the only one. — Phoenix admitted. — Still bothered by what Godot said.
— Yeah... Though someone gave me a light towards that situation. Not a solution, but a way to solve this by my own.
Phoenix was going to tease when he saw Miles lost in his thoughts. Whoever it was, that person did an excellent job at left the man lost in his thoughts, thinking about the direction of his life, so because of that Phoenix only said:
— I see...
Miles closed the file and extended to Phoenix.
— Now, back to business: Remember Dahlia Hawthorne, correct?
— Yeah...
Phoenix hated to admit, but he remembered the woman that tricked him and broke his heart into little pieces. He tensed as he remembered the treatment, she gave to him at that fateful day. Phoenix had trouble to get into a romantic relationship until...
Phoenix smiled as he visualized his beloved, but he closed his face again when he looked at the file. The title was short and straight: DM-4 Incident. Phoenix knew that file, but only at glance.
— Mia had the same file at her-My office. I guess I would not like to hear what you have to say to me.
— I'm sure you will not. That was my first case. Also, Mia first case. The thing is, there was one person there in common related to you.
Phoenix took the file and read the contents carefully, paying attention to all the details the file had. Of all the name, one caught his attention.
— Dahlia Hawthorne...
Phoenix felt his hands trembling in anger as he was willing to face that woman again to solve this once for all.
— I think you have already figured out why she has mentioned in that letter by Morgan Fey.
— They related somehow... — Phoenix said as he gritted his teeth furiously.
— It seems like it. Both seems to know each other way too well according to the wardens who took care of her.
That detail catches Phoenix's attention.
— Took care... That means she...?
— Yes. She on the death row. Her execution it will be in two days. She was transferred to the solitary, due to her... dangerousness...
— What a cute face doesn't do... — Phoenix complained.
— That and the fact she tried to murder Morgan Fey in retaliation. The woman tried to kill her.
Phoenix messed his hair in anger.
— Even if they're related, that doesn't make any sense. Why does Dahlia will join Morgan to an assassination plot towards Maya?!
— That's the question. That's why an investigation has been started, and Dahlia was put on solitary. Thanks for the evidence you found, she will face another trial soon. Hope she doesn't get a life-sentence.
— Considering all she did, that will be the least of it... But why now...!?
— That is something I don't know but consider yourself lucky. You had found a major conspiracy towards Maya life.
— *sigh* My sister seems to get herself into trouble more than I can predict...
Miles eyes widened after hearing Phoenix's comment.
— What's wrong?
— You called Maya your sister.
— Yes, for me she is. I mean, Mia has been an older sister to me, so...
Miles slowly felt the pieces fell on their places, as he connected the dots.
— You're with someone else! — He exclaimed.
Phoenix made a shush as he put his index finger in front of his lips in a plead to shut up Miles. Phoenix locked the door and nodded in agreement.
— Yes, smartass, I'm with someone else. I'm not into a romantic relationship with Maya if that's you're thinking.
— But everyone thought...
— Everyone's wrong, including you. Or do you think you're a relationship with the—
— Please don't dare to say I'm with that old hag! Finding her was bad enough and I'm glad I've escaped from her clutches... — Miles interrupted, then be mumbled. — though I had fell in the clutches of another woman.
— Really?
Phoenix had a smug grin on his face and Miles blushed hard.
— So, what's her name?
— Be quiet! That's none of your business!
The blue clad attorney laughed in amusement.
— Who had thought that day will arrive. Miles Edgeworth fell in love with someone, and at first sight, nonetheless.
— Oh, shut up! You were the same thing.
— But in MY defense, I was immature and stupid. You are far mature than me in.
Miles hid his face on his hands.
— Go ahead, laugh at your heart content. — Miles said in defeat.
— I'm just amused that my best friend fell in love. I mean, that's a great thing, doesn't you think?
— Why do you think that?!
— Because you are changing, Miles.
Miles stopped and realized what Margaret meant.
— I'm changing... Like her said during the fortune telling session.
— Fortune telling?
— Long story short: A fortune teller save me from Wendy Oldbag and as a thanks I accepted her to read my fortune.
— Wait, a fortune teller? You fell in love for a fortune teller?
— Err...
Miles awkwardly nodded in affirmation, and he buried his face in embarrassment once again. When he looked at Phoenix, he saw him was looking at him with a curious face, as he looked at him begging for more details.
— She's like Sae in appearance, though there some slight differences. Her eyes are a bright amber, her hair is wavy, and she wears a velvet dress.
— A velvet dress?
— Not a dress, a secretary outfit. It suits her perfectly though, despite of how much heat that cloth can produce.
— I see...
— Her laugh is enchanting, and she is so professional.
— Hum... What's her name?
— Margaret.
— Like from the Frankenstein book?
— How do you...
— Art major. Literature is obligatory in our course. Why do you think I can't remember the first semester of the law course? We saw major theories during the first semester in art and that demands a lot from us. That said... Calling me an uncultured swine was bullshit.
— I'm sorry, okay? Geez, never thought you were that knowledgeful at that area.
Phoenix sighed tiredly.
— If I couldn't become an attorney, I might've become a comic artist. Always loved to draw, you know?
— Yeah, I remember that well…
Indeed, Phoenix always were an excellent artist, more than Larry at certain aspects of style. Though he wasn't too prone to show his art, Miles knew well the man is indeed talented. He remembered the portrait he did to him and how well-made he was. He remembered he's still keeping that drawing as a memo of his past, and also as one of his treasured things of the past.
— Guess you don't have that portrait I did to you when we were kids.
— I keep it. That's one of the few things I couldn't throw away. It always reminded me of the good times of past.
— I see… Well, that makes me happy. Now, back to your Lady Margaret.
— Lady Margaret? Really?
— Come on, just get it with. Besides, you like her, right?
Miles nodded.
— I swear, I never felt like that. I mean, I don't have much experience in love but…
— It feels like butterflies on the stomach, you feel nervous close to her, and you feel your heart will explode. Yeah, I know that well.
— But! I never liked anyone like that before! I didn't had interest in anyone before!
— Well, it happens, though I need to give an advice to you.
— Which is?
— Don't jump on conclusions and try to understand your feelings before it's too late. It might will end hurt you and her.
Miles understood what Phoenix meant.
— So, her…
— She broke me. Dahlia destroyed me. I took a long time to rebuild myself. However, when I met her…
— The one you're with now?
— Yeah. We managed to heal each other and to strengthen each other more. That's allowed us to move forward.
Miles smiled.
— You two must have loved each other at first sight.
Phoenix laughed.
— That was quite the opposite. We hated each other to guts. But our feelings changed eventually. And then… I realized I love her… and how she loves me back with the same intensity.
Miles smiled.
— I see. So, who is she?
— Oh, I can't say. But you know her already.
— It's Franziska?
Phoenix laughed louder than before.
— Nah, though it's understandable why do you think it was her.
Phoenix checked the file once again and another name caught his attention. Attached to that name file was a news clipping mentioning to a poisoning incident.
— Hey, about that lawyer.
Someone knocked hard on the door and Miles sighed.
— Let me open it. It's Gumshoe.
— You sure?
— Yeah. Only him knocks at my office door like that.
Miles unlocked and opened the door and Gumshoe saluted him before entering the office. He was panting heavily and sweating bullets.
— Something's wrong detective?
— Well, yes, Sir. I do have some bad news.
— I see.
Phoenix sighed annoyed, something Gumshoe noticed.
— You look terrible, Pal.
— You don't know half of it… So, what's the bad news.
— Well, about Mr. Masahiro…
— Is he dead? — Miles asked.
— No. Thank God, no! He's okay. The issue is Shido's minions trying to coerce his family. But the good news is Interpol took them under their protection. — Gumshoe explained.
— At least some good news.
— But the bad news wasn't from that.
— Okay… So, what is it? — Phoenix asked.
— Remember that letter you sent to analysis?
Phoenix froze. He knew something bad will come.
— Well, we made several tests, and nothing was found. Well, expect for one thing. Blood was found, and we have a match.
— And? — Miles asked.
— The thing is, that person is currently missing. — Gumshoe said as he extended a vanilla folder. — Here, the results.
— What's wrong with the results? — Phoenix asked.
— You will see.
Phoenix checked the results and he saw the name on the paper. He gave the results to Miles, and he screamed in shock once he saw the contents on the paper.
— But that's…
— Impossible? Yeah. The thing is he's the match and we doesn't know how that's possible.
Phoenix pondered about that, and he checked all the information in it. Then an idea crossed his mind. Taking the DM-4 Incident file, he took the photo of the person who suffered the poisoning incident and checked the profiles he carried on his note pad. Only one person has on his mind. When he compared the pictures, he knew he found something big, something that was made sense.
— I think I know who the person behind that contradiction.
Phoenix showed the photos and Miles understood why.
— How couldn't we see that before?! — Miles said shocked.
— I'm fairly sure hiding at plaining sight wasn't the first idea we had to figure out. That said, this explains a lot of things. Godot is Diego Armando.
