"Why do you do that?" Maria asked.
"Do what?" Henry had told himself he wouldn't seek out Maria at this party, but she was asking him a direct question, so what else could he do?
"You're trying to vex me, aren't you?"
"Not at all, Mrs. Rushworth," he replied.
"See! You did it again!" she exclaimed.
As much as it amused him to see that he could still elicit feelings from her, it was somewhat uncomfortable that there were so many people around.
"I apologize for whatever I may have done to offend you. Send my regards to Mr. Rushworth."
