Fanny sat by the fire, organizing her aunt's work basket, and at the ready to pick things up should her aunt fall asleep. Her cousins had all gone to the bonfire, but it was November, and could get quite chilly in the evening. She didn't mind.

Her aunt was just starting to doze, but hadn't yet dropped her work, when a noise startled them.

"What was that?" Aunt Bertram exclaimed.

Fanny jumped up and went to the window, and saw some lights about a mile off.

"It looks like someone has set off fireworks," Fanny said.

"It is quite startling."
