Her wings beat in a steady rhythm next to mine. A silkwing, my moms never knew, but surely they wouldn't mind. Mom wouldn't, mother might. I flew slightly lower to match her, and whispered, "Do you think we have come far enough?" Aphid shook her head, her delicate antenna testing the wind. "No, not far enough yet. We haven't even made it to Dragonfly Bay." We were flying far away. Away from Pantala. Away from home. Towards Pyrrhia, where there is hope from our allies. "Sorry Aloe. We need to get dragons like Sundew, who have leafspeak." I looked at Aphid, hurt. "I have leafspeak." She swooped back next to me, her face softening. "You can only hear them. But your power is strong." I moved away from her, spread my wings and landed, looking back at the quickly spreading, dragon eating, deadly plants. The jungle broke free. It waited for Sundew to be gone. She was holding the poison jungle back. Aphid stopped and landed next to me. "I'm sorry. I never thought… I'm sorry I compared you to your mother." Aphid knew how much I hated it when people compared my defected leafspeak to that of the great Sundew. My mom Willow had gone with her too. I was old enough to take care of myself, but not the whole of Pantala. "You go ahead Aphid. I need to do something." Aphid looked uncertain, but then she nodded and said, "Okay. I trust you. Just please come back to me in one unbrused piece." I smiled at her and replied, "No promises." I beat my wings, taking to the air. I fly back toward the spreading trees, opening my ears. I hear the trees whispering, in essence, Mine, mine, free, free. The whole thing is mine. We will eat freely. I suddenly knew what I needed to do. I landed and let my mind clear, just as mother had told me she did when she used her leafspeak. I followed the roots to the source of the rebellion, and I heard the real voice. Another leafspeaker.
