First chapter
POV Narrator
Around 80% of the world's population has a "quirk", an individuality that allows a person to have some type of supernatural power, being able to have superhuman attributes, control elements, become animals and among countless other things, the variety of individualities is immeasurable. However, Izuku was born into a small group of people who did not fit into either the groups with individuality or those without any individuality, an extremely rare case.
It all started when his mother, Inko Midoriya, took him and his sister, Izumi Midoriya, for an exam to discover her children's individuality. Izuku and Izumi were extremely similar, from their hair color to their freckles and the color of their eyes, the only difference was the youngest girl's hair, which was long and tied into two pigtails. Other than that, both were already at the age for their individualities to awaken and it was necessary to go to the doctor to monitor them, which was the exact reason they were there, just waiting for the results after a long battery of tests.
While the family awaited the results in the waiting room, the responsible doctor analyzed the test results. He was somewhat intrigued by what he was seeing, as in his entire career he had only found a single case like the one in his hands. After checking the results several times, the doctor called the family to his office, he was still standing and carrying a clipboard in his hands, which was full of papers with very important information about the body development of the two little ones who went to his hospital office that morning.
As soon as the family sat down in front of their table, the doctor quickly sat down in his chair and placed the clipboard in front of Inko, facing so she could look at it if she wished.
Doctor: Mrs Midoriya, first of all I must say that your children are healthy and with everything in place, I can't imagine how difficult it must be to take care of two children alone, but you are doing a great job - Inko lets out a sigh of relief and smiles at the doctor, thanking him for the kind words -The credit is all yours, but now let's move on to why you came here... after analyzing the results of Izumi's exams, I came to the conclusion that her individuality is the same as yours, Telekinesis, however it seems that hers is more powerful compared to yours, the number of X cells in her body is very high and it seems that she has undergone some type of mutation, if I'm not mistaken you cannot use your power on living beings, correct? - the doctor asked Inko .
Inko: I can't, but apparently my daughter can, I discovered this when she started levitating Izuku last week - the older greenish one lightly scratched the back of her neck, remembering the despair she had when she saw her son spinning through the air in the middle of the ling room some nights back.
Izumi: Mom, will I be able to be a hero like you? - the younger girl was pulling her mother's arm, she wasn't understanding anything of what the two adults were saying.
Inko: Of course, my angel.
Upon hearing this, Izumi lets out a loud scream of joy, which ends up scaring her mother and the doctor, both of whom start to laugh softly when they see that Izuku also starts to scream and celebrate with his sister. Inko does her best to calm the genuine happiness of her two children, and it took a few minutes for both to really stay still in place.
Inko: Forgive me doctor, they are full of energy.
Doctor: No problem, children are like that.
Inko: Well, since everything is fine with Izumi's quirk, what about Izuku's?
Upon hearing the question, the doctor lets out a brief sigh. He didn't like giving "bad" news to families, but it was necessary. The doctor starts looking for a folder in his drawer, which was full of exam papers and some x-rays. As soon as he picked it up, he leafed through it for a few moments, before removing an MRI image from there.
Doctor: Izuku is an exceptional case Mrs. Midoriya, he has an individuality factor and even mutant cells in his muscles and bones. However, they are inactive, incomplete so to speak, and ended up not causing any significant changes to your child's body.
At this moment the room became quiet, you could see the confusion and fear of the Midoriya family, especially young Izuku, who ended up dropping his All Might toy on the floor. The doctor, seeing the shock he caused, got up from the table and went to a monitor that was on the wall right next to them, placing the images of the MRI he got from the folder and Izuku's MRI on a small light table, after which, with a control, he started to zoom in on the images.
Doctor: According to the documents, your quirk is telekinesis and their father's was flame spitting, correct? None of these individualities manifested themselves in the exams we carried out on your son, but if you pay close attention to these exams, you will be able to see little green dots that appear in the bones and tissues of little Midoriya and this other patient that I diagnosed a few years ago. Based on this, I assume that your son has some type of mutant individuality, possibly a mutation of the individuality of you two or his father's, however, everything points to the fact that the mutant cells together with the individuality factor ended up not developing enough.
Even after hearing the Doctor's explanation, Inko was still somewhat confused, she picked up her son's toy that had fallen to the floor using her telekinesis and held it for a few moments, trying to digest everything she had just heard.
Inko: In short, does this mean that Izuku has a quirk, but it doesn't work and you have no idea what it is? - she said, returning the toy to her son, while gently stroking his head.
The doctor's face became sad and he ended up lowering his head slightly, which is why he hated giving sad news. Without saying anything else, the doctor sits back down in his chair, resting both arms on the table as he thinks of an answer.
Doctor: In short... it's a little more complicated than that ma'am, these cases are very rare to happen, sometimes it's because individuality skips a generation, as in certain diseases or genetic traits, as well as the individuality factor of your child could come to maturity in his adolescence along with puberty, or just the genetic trait of his individuality does not match well with that of the children's father and ended up not working out when it came to generating Izuku's individuality, as these cases have been so rare for just speculations and theories about this in the scientific community... I'm sorry Mrs. Midoriya, but I believe that your son is practically quirkless.
Those words hit Izuku hard, he was static and completely unresponsive, he had an individuality that hadn't developed... he was practically quirkless. Inko's heart broke when she saw her son like that, she just thanked the doctor for everything and took her children back to the car to go home, and this trip home was silent and lasted almost an eternity, Inko didn't have any idea of how to talk to her son and Izumi was sad for her brother, as they both kept saying they would become heroes together.
When they got home, Izuku went straight to his room, he was isolated there almost the entire day alone, watching the video of his favorite hero All Might saving hundreds of people in a disaster. Saving people was what Izuku most wanted to do, but now that he discovered that he didn't have a useful quirk, he knew that wouldn't be possible, so much so that he started crying and his mother had to go to his room to see what was happening.
Inko: Izuku! What happened? - she asked worriedly, thinking he had hurt himself, but then she noticed the video playing on the screen and felt guilt hit her chest.
Izuku: Mom... can I still be a hero? - the little one looked at his mother with eyes full of tears, his mother was a hero just like All Might, she could give him the definitive answer.
However, at that moment Inko started to cry and hugged her son, apologizing to him, as she couldn't give him an answer, Izumi also appeared in the room and hugged her brother, she didn't know exactly what was happening, but she didn't like seeing her brother sad like that. After this day, Izuku's life turned upside down, his friends at school turned away from him because he practically had no individuality, even Kacchan, who was always playing with Izuku, turned his back on him, calling him Deku, the useless one. No one took him seriously anymore, they bullied the greenish one and insulted him, even hitting him when they had the opportunity, the only one who protected and supported him was his younger sister, Izumi, whenever she found someone picking on her brother, she protected him using her telekinesis.
However, that wasn't enough to stop Izuku from wanting to be a hero like All Might, every opportunity he had, he still did good, from cleaning the school to helping a little lady cross the street, for him heroes weren't only those who save people from disasters and beat up super villains, but those who always helped the people around them, giving them the slightest reason to smile.
In Izuku's head, he imagined that all people thought that way, especially aspiring heroes, however, real life wasn't quite like that... and this became more than clear to him after a day in a park, there he learned a lesson that would last a lifetime.
Izuku's POV
You know, the playground was much more fun when I played with my friends, but everyone moved away from me because I have a useless individuality, now they call me useless Deku, they say I can't be a hero and worth nothing, but I'm not even then, I'm going to become a hero like All Might who saves everyone with a smile on his face... I just have to think how.
I always bring plenty of toys to invite someone to play with me, I have the All Might, Endeavor, Thirteen, and this angry dog, he's funny... but there's no one to play with me. I look around to see if I could find anyone, but I only see Kacchan with his friends playing on the slide, I really wanted to go there and play with them or ask them to come here, but I know that I will only be insulted and even beaten, why did things have to be this way? Before we awakened our individualities, we played normally... at least I have my toys here.
I continue to play alone in my corner, it was the most boring but certainly the safest, however, something caught my attention, I heard something that sounded like an argument where the slide was. As soon as I look over there, I see Kacchan and his friends teasing a girl, I couldn't hear very well what they were saying because I was a little far away, so I approached slowly, so they wouldn't notice me, and I could hear the discussion better.
Kacchan: Tell me what your quirk is! It has something to do with your ridiculous hair, right? - Kacchan was screaming, it seems like he only knows how to talk like that, his hair is blonde and all spiky and messy, his eyes are red and his quirk is called "Explosion", he was together with two friends interrogating the girl.
?: It's not of your business, I'm not going to tell you and my hair isn't ridiculous, yours is, all spiky and messy, it looks like a porcupine - The girl replied, I ended up laughing softly at her answer, she was right on both things, since she had relatively long hair and it was divided into two colors, half was white and the other half was red… it was beautiful.
Kacchan: Your half and half clown - Bakugou pushed her, making her move away and fall to the ground, he was furious - So you shouldn't have an individuality, another useless one like Deku, I'll show you your place. - there were small explosions coming out of his hands... oh no
Is he going to hit her?! But she's just a girl wanting to play in peace, why did he pick on her out of nowhere?! I need to do something! But I have no chance against them, what should I do?!... I'm running?... my legs are moving on their own!
When I noticed, I was already running towards them, putting myself between Kacchan and the girl, surprising everyone there. I don't stand a chance in a fight against them, but if I couldn't save this girl right here, I could never call myself a hero.
Izuku: Kacchan, stop it or I will never forgive you - I stuttered more than I wanted to when I said this, but I need to show my determination, only then will he see what he's doing, it's very stupid.
I saw his eyes widen a little, but he just started to laugh smugly, and then punched the palm of his hand, creating a small explosion, causing some smoke to come out of there.
Kacchan: It had to be you, Deku, it's just you who keeps getting in my way! You have no chance at all with your useless individuality - he looks back and talks to his henchmen - Let's show this trash what a real individuality is - said and done they come after me...
POV Narrator
What came next cannot be called a fight, but rather a cowardly beating, Izuku endured some blows from his malefactors standing up, but soon fell to the ground and began to be beaten by Kacchan and his "henchmen", they kicked and punched him until they got bored, and then walked away, leaving the boy there on the floor. Midoriya was all dirty and scraped up, his white t-shirt was stained with Bakugo's explosions and the dirt on the playground floor, but, being beaten by the girl still counted as a rescue in his mind, so he was satisfied that at least she hadn't gotten hurt.
Even though his goal was complete, he still didn't understand why it happened, Kacchan kept saying that he wanted to be a hero like All Might, so why was he beating other children and showing that everyone should be beneath him? If you were born with great power, you should use it to protect others and not mistreat them... and it was, at that moment, that Midoriya realized that not everyone was created equal, both by Kacchan and by the girl he just saved, because he thought she had gone away, run away... but no.
Shoko's POV
I couldn't do anything... I watched this boy take a beating for me without doing anything, I was so scared by those three bullies that I was paralyzed, as if a huge weight had been placed on my body, preventing me from moving. But as soon as they left, my body felt lighter and lighter until it started to respond to me again.
Shoko: Hey! Are you ok? - I look worriedly at the boy who saved me - "What a stupid question, of course he wasn't well, he just got beaten up" - I take the boy's arm and help him sit down - I'm sorry, I couldn't help you, I was scared... You didn't need to get involved in the discussion.
Now that I see the boy more clearly, I could see his big green eyes, as well as his hair that was the same color, which was all messy and singed, besides that he also had small freckles on his cheeks... he was a very cute boy. He still looked a little lost, maybe because of the beating he took, but as soon as his gaze met mine, I could see his eyes shine a little brighter and a smile appear on his face.
?: I couldn't help it, I couldn't let Kacchan hit you without doing anything, that wouldn't be a hero's thing, in fact it's like All Might said, "Getting involved in what wasn't called for, is the essence of being a hero" - he said the last part, deepening his voice, trying to imitate him, I ended up laughing a little at his imitation and I saw his smile widen a little more - I'm glad you're okay - I feel my face heat up a little and I end up smiling at him too, I help him get up and wipe some of the dust off his clothes.
Shoko: Thank you very much for saving me, my name is Shoko Todoroki and yours?
Izuku: My name is Izuku Midoriya… do you want to play with me? I brought some toys, they are right there - he pointed to one of the corners of the park, where there were some toys spread out.
Shoko: Yes, I want to, but let me clean your bruises a little, otherwise it could get worse - I take his hand and take him to a near tap - My mother says we always have to wash the wounds - as soon as we get to the tap, I wet it a cloth that I carried with me and I applied it to the bruises on his face and arms, he grumbled a little but didn't complain at any point - You're really tough Midoriya-san.
I see his face turn a little red and he lets out a somewhat awkward laugh as he scratches the back of his head.
Izuku: It's nothing, I'm used to it, they beat me every time I say I want to be a hero.
Shoko: But what do you mean? Why do they do this? Besides being idiots - what was the problem with Midoriya wanting to be a hero? He had just saved me.
Izuku: Well... I don't have a quirk that works, I'm practically quirkless, they brag about their quirks and say they'll be better heroes than me.
He said the last part very quietly and the smile that was on his face disappeared, I don't believe he is mistreated just because he doesn't have an individuality, this is so stupid that it makes me angry.
Shoko: They're a bunch of idiots, that's right, you saved me from being beaten by those bullies, even though you don't have a quirk, you're much more heroic than any of them, you're my hero - his face turned red and suddenly he started crying comically, did I say something wrong?!
Izuku: You're the first person who doesn't insult me right after finding out about my problem, thank you very much Todoroki-san, I'll protect you whenever you need it - the green one said bowing several times, I held him to stop with that, what make me realize that he was surprised by my attitude.
Shoko: There's no need for that, you didn't cry when you were being beaten so you won't cry now, okay? - his crying stops and I see his cute smile appearing again - Let's go play! I want to see the dolls you have.
POV Narrator
And it was there that Midoriya made his first friendship, every day after school, they both met in the park to play and talk, this became a routine for the two little ones, which made them very close, so much so that several promises began to get out of there, to become heroes together, to have their own agency and to be together forever. However, after months of meeting each other, Shoko simply stopped going to the playground, her father had begun forced training on her, so that she would become his successor and fulfill his dream of becoming the number 1 hero, leaving Izuku alone... and he never understood why she never came to see him again.
In any case, he didn't give up on his dream and continued moving forward, the years that followed were difficult for the young aspiring hero, but as they say: A true hero is one who overcomes life's adversities, in the next chapter we will see the first steps of Izuku, the hero who destroyed the sky… to save the world as we know it.
