Chapter 2
In a convenience store on the outskirts of Commerce City, Ash hummed quietly to himself as he filled up the plastic baskets hanging off his arms with snacks of all kinds. It had been quite a long time since he had gone out adventuring, and with the money his mother had given him for the journey burning a hole in his pocket, he wanted to make sure they didn't have to stop for a while.
Brock and Gary were waiting outside, with the former looking at a guidebook to the Orange Archipelago to try and research as much as he could about them, though Ash figured he was only interested in it because of the beach picture on the front with the girls in bathing suits.
After paying the clerk at the counter, Ash stepped out with a large paper bag and a filled plastic bag full of both food and drink for them. Cradling them in his arms, he peered over the bag and made his way to Brock and Gary. The latter was sitting on a bench drinking a Soda Pop he acquired from the nearby vending machine, and Brock was thumbing through the orange guidebook in hand.
"Okay, we're all set!" Ash said to them cheerily as he exited out the automatic glass doors. "I'm pretty sure I've got enough snacks and stuff to last us at least a couple of weeks."
"A couple of weeks?" Gary repeated with a frown and a raised, skeptical eyebrow. "Exactly how long do you think it's gonna take us to get to Valencia Island?"
"If we have to walk..." Ash murmured in thought. "I think about a month or so!"
"Jeez, I knew your brain was small, but I didn't realize how small," Gary sneered with a condescending shrug. "Don't you know 'archipelago' means 'island'? Unless you can magically walk across water, we're gonna have to figure something else out."
Ash's eyebrows clashed together in the middle of his face and he opened his mouth to retort angrily, but Brock interrupted him before a fight ensued. "The guidebook says if you go by blimp, it takes less than a day," he stated, pointing to a picture of a blimp printed on the back of the book.
"Less than a day?" the Pallet Town Trainer parroted. "I wish we had enough money to go by a blimp!"
As if the gods themselves smiled upon them, a man on the other side of the convenience store gave a loud shout and rang a bell in his hands, grabbing all of their attention. "And we have another big winner!" They looked to see a pair of men wearing bright red coats – as if made specifically to grab the attention of others – standing in front of a young mother and her daughter with a table in between them.
"Congratulations, ma'am!" his partner said as he handed her a box.
"Here's a set of beautiful refrigerator magnets." The woman walked away, and the two men put their mouths into the yellow cones in their hands to amplify their voices.
"Just bring your register receipt and take a chance!" the taller, younger guy called.
"You could win our grand prize blimp trip to beautiful Valencia Island! Hurry hurry!"
"Did he say 'blimp'?" Brock asked quietly.
"All right! A free trip!" Ash said with excitement, already putting down his bags to dig through them for his receipt. "Now we'll get to Valencia Island in no time!"
"You don't really expect to win that free trip, do you?" Gary asked with a raised eyebrow. "It would have to take pure dumb luck in order to win it." Ash ignored him, and continued to rummage through the bags of chips and candy until he found his receipt, and Gary and Brock followed him as he hurried up to the lottery booth.
"I'd like to enter the lottery, please," he requested, holding out the thin sheet of paper. The man with the mustache scanned it with his eyes and nodded, and his partner spun the wheel. They could hear many, many beads inside churning as it turned. In a matter of seconds, a single bead spilled out. A golden one.
"HE WON!" the younger man called loudly, ringing his bell excitedly.
"It's our grand prize round-trip blimp flight to Valencia Island for three!" On either side of Ash, Gary and Brock both fell to the ground while the spiky-haired boy rubbed the back of his head.
"Oh well, I guess you can't lose them all!"

Still clutching the bag of snacks in his arms, the three – led by Ash – made their way to the blimp station as directed by the convenience store lottery clerks. Ash was on cloud nine, feeling as though nothing could burst his bubble, not even Gary's little quips. And this feeling of elation only grew larger once their eyes fell upon the blimp in the middle of the yard.
"I never saw a blimp this close!" Ash said with excitement.
"It's bigger than I thought it'd be!" Brock chimed in. But Gary was skeptical.
"It doesn't look like it's in the best of shape," he frowned. "Is it really okay to fly?"
"Of course it's okay to fly! It's not beat up, it's just... broken in!" Despite Ash's defenses, a pair of workers came up to them, and saw them looking upon the old-looking blimp.
"You're not here for a blimp ride, are ya?" one of them asked nervously.
"Yes, sir!" Ash answered with a happy-go-lucky grin on his face. "We won round-trip tickets to Valencia Island on the blimp!" The two workers reeled back as if Ash had just called them the nastiest word in the book.
"You kids are brave!" the other worker wearing a hardhat cried.
"How much 'ya getting paid?"
"Getting paid?" Brock repeated quietly with a cocked eyebrow.
"What d'ya mean?" Ash asked, his smile slowly fading.
"I knew there was something funny about that blimp," Gary added. The two workers exchanged nervous glances, and then came in closer, and the one who originally spoke to them covered his mouth as if telling a secret.
"Look, uh, that blimp's so dangerous, everybody says it's haunted by a gang of ghosts..." he warned them. "I wouldn't fly on that thing if you paid me a million bucks." Ash and the others didn't even have a chance to react before a pair of blue uniformed flight attendants popped up out of nowhere and gave them wide grins.
"Attention, please!" they both said at the same time, surprising all of them. They quickly pushed the warehouse workers out of the way and jumped in front of Ash.
"Please have your tickets ready!" the young man with long, shoulder-length lavender hair wearing a pair of aviators that covered his eyes spoke up.
"Passengers may now begin boarding!" said the stewardess with her red hair tied up in a bun and tucked neatly into a cap that matched her outfit.
"Uh... but what about the ghosts?" Ash asked, blinking in confusion.
"What ghosts, sir?"
"Those two guys just said that blimp was haunted," Gary answered for him.
"Oh, they must have been from a rival blimp line," the young man said, waving both of his hands dismissively, and then ushered Ash toward the blimp by the shoulders. "Come on, now! It's party time!"
Behind them, the redheaded stewardess was shoving Gary and Brock close behind. "Please have your carry-on luggage ready for inspection." The pair ushered them toward the stairs of the blimp, ignoring their protests.
"Ooh! Right this way! Watch your step!"
"B-but, I..." Ash sputtered, holding up the three tickets that he had won in his hand after fishing them out of the brown paper bag. "Don't you want to see our tickets?"
"Don't worry, we're upgrading you to first class, anyway!"
"Get set for takeoff, everyone!" the woman said, and after leading Gary and Brock up the stairs, the stairs raised up behind them.
The inside of the blimp was actually surprisingly like the lobby of a hotel, though not nearly as fancy. The young man took Ash's tickets – as well as his bag of snacks for 'safe keeping' – and led them to a door before leaving them behind and disappearing around a corner.
Soon enough, the blimp lurched underneath their feet, signifying that they had left the ground and were on their way to Valencia Island. A smile spreading across Ash's face, he couldn't believe the luck that had smiled upon them, and he twisted the doorknob open before walking inside.
Instantly, his smile faded. The room was almost like a meeting room, with windows looking out on either side. A long table with four chairs on each side of it was tucked in close in the middle of the room, but the tablecloth was covered in a thick layer of dust. The carpet had patches sewn onto it to cover holes, and so did the walls. "Hey, I thought they said this was first class..."
"This looks like last class to me..." Gary added, his eyes flickering from the chandelier that was hanging on by a single rusted chain to the windows with cracks in them that were taped together to keep them from falling apart.
All three of the boys all were silent as they took in the room around them, and a loud creak sounded under Ash's feet. The boy nearly jumped out of his skin, but then realized his mistake and placed a hand on his chest to stop his heart from beating so hard as he let out an embarrassed chuckle. "For a second, I was afraid the floor was gonna colla-AAAAAHHH!" He didn't even get a chance to finish saying his sentence before the carpeted floor swallowed Ash up, but through reflexes alone, Ash was able to snatch the edges of the broken hole that had formed while his legs dangled helplessly below. He let out a frantic yell, and looked down. The only thing beneath him was pure blue ocean, miles and miles below. "Hey, where'd the ground go?!" he exclaimed, and whipped his head back up at his traveling companions. "You've gotta help me up!"
"Grab my hand, Ash!" Gary said hurriedly, dropping to his knees and reaching out a bare hand. When Ash grabbed his rival's hand, Brock reached down and grabbed the other.
"We've got 'ya!" the Pokémon Breeder assured him, and using all of their strength, they pulled Ash out of the hole like one would a turnip. All three of them collapsed on the floor with their hearts beating frantically in their chests from the near-death experience.
"Thanks for saving me, guys..." Ash managed to spit out, his cheek pressed against the dirty carpet.
"That was a close one..." Brock murmured.
Just then, the door from which they entered flung open, and the female stewardess leaned in with an ignorant grin curling her lipstick covered mouth. "Ah! I see you're all relaxing!"
"Buzz off!" Gary snapped at her, and for a split second, the young woman shot daggers through her eyes at the younger boy, but the young man with the lavender hair quickly got between them.
"Ladies and gentlemen, dinner is now served!" While the male flight attendant covered up the newly-opened hole in the floor with plywood and nails, humming happily as he did, Ash and the others sat themselves at the table in the center of the room while the stewardess brought in a tray containing three bowls and handed them to the three Trainers.
Always being one for a meal, Ash was the first to put his spoon into his mouth, and across the table, Gary and Brock followed his lead. They all let it sit on their tongues in silence, until Brock looked at the pair. "Ugh, this soup is ice-cold!"
"Ah, the chef has a bit of a cat's tongue," the man admitted bashfully.
"Cat's tongue?"
"Yes, our chef-" he began, but then let out a yelp when the stewardess struck him in the face with the metal tray she had served the food on. Covering her mouth, she chuckled dismissively. Suddenly, the metal foundation gave a large groan reminiscent of an old man getting out of bed in the morning, and the whole ship tilted forward. The soup tilted in their bowls, and though it wasn't enough to spill, it was enough for the pair of workers to bounce to the side in order to not fall flat on their face. Not only that, but the three had to hold onto the table tightly as it threatened to tip over.
"Hey, what's going on here?" Ash demanded.
"What is that pilot doing up front?!" Gary added.
Leaning in each other's arms for support, they looked at the three Pokémon Trainers, then at each other. "Good questions..." they muttered at the same time, and then disappeared out of the room as if they had a sudden thought that was escaping them.
The three all exchanged looks of confusion. What in the world was going on? As the blimp steadied itself out back into a normal position, they all looked down at their cold soups. The appetite for them had disappeared with the first bite, and they were better off eating ice cream. "Uh, is anyone else gonna eat theirs?" Brock asked hesitantly, and Gary shook his head.
"Well, hey! Lucky for us, I bought all those snacks! Let's just eat those!" Ash stated cheerily, and turned to his backpack before freezing in place. "Wait, where did they go?!"
"Didn't that guy take them before they put us in here?" Brock questioned, and the Pallet Town boy's head whipped around.
"You're right! Did they steal our snacks?!" Along with about a million other questions, this one went unanswered, as the blimp turned once again, but this time more dramatically and without any warning. The whole table fell on its side, and Ash fell backwards while Gary and Brock fell forward. The older two tumbled over the edge of the table, and crashed down on Ash, but the damage had already been done when all of the main course was spilled all over the black-haired Trainer. "Check, please..." Ash murmured in a daze, being crushed against the metal wall and both Gary and Brock.
"Are you guys all right?" Brock asked, but before they could answer, the whole blimp righted itself for just an instant, and then leaned in the opposite direction. Gravity pushed them to the other side of the room like a twisted slide, and they all cried out as now Gary and Brock were pinned to the wall between the table and Ash. They barely had a chance to finish yelling before the blimp tilted forward, and they slid, assuming their original position. This happened five or six more times, back and forth while the three screamed loudly and tried their best to grab onto anything they could to stop them from sliding to no avail. And at this time, all of them were thankful they didn't eat anything, despite the fact that Ash was wearing it.
Finally, the ship seemed to level itself, and they all lay in a frozen position, awaiting the worst, but none came. With the coast clear for now, the three all peeled themselves off the ground. Broken china had shattered into the carpet, and Ash's hat was sideways, but other than that, he was perfectly fine aside from being a little dizzy. "Is everybody all right here?" he asked.
"I'm annoyed more than anything," Gary replied, his eyebrows angrily coming together before he stood up on his boot-covered feet. "I'm going to go find this pilot and give him a piece of my mind!"
"Gary-" Ash tried to say, but his rival ignored him and marched past him and out the door in a huff. Getting up onto their feet, Ash and Brock exchanged a nervous glance before hurrying after the Indigo League winner. They navigated with common sense toward the front of the blimp, and before long they had found the control room at the front of the gondola.
"All right-" Gary cried, swinging the door open, but something invisible snatched his words out of his mouth, and his eyebrows raised in surprise. "Is no one steering the blimp?" Ash and Brock peered over the shoulder of Gary's purple long-sleeve shirt and saw an empty room without a living soul.
"Maybe it's on autopilot," Ash suggested quietly.
"Do you think a blimp this old would have an autopilot?" Brock came back, and then looked ahead. Though the cracked window, it looked like they were heading straight into an angry, black storm cloud. The thunder could be heard even from here, and it shook the metal bones of the blimp beneath their feet.
"We're just gonna have to find those two flight attendants," Gary said, closing the metal door to the control room. This time, with a bit more urgency, the group of three all rushed around the entire gondola in an attempt to find the pair. They searched the kitchens, the storage closets, even in the captain's quarters, but they didn't find anything. Slowly, the words of the two warehouse workers came drifting back into Ash's head.
Look, uh, that blimp's so dangerous, everybody says it's haunted by a gang of ghosts...
Was that true? Did they really just imagine two ghosts serving them aboard the blimp? Stranger things had happened to Ash...
The last place they hadn't looked was the main frame above the passenger's quarters themselves. One by one they each climbed up the ladder, and the thunder from the storm brewing outside shook the metal they held onto, but they finally made it up. The interior was very dark as there weren't very many lights inside the large space, but the lightning outside occasionally lit it up through the envelope of the blimp. "What would those two be doing in a creepy place like this?"
"It's the only place on the blimp we haven't looked yet," Brock told him. They navigated through the steel walkways, which were built around the giant, various airbags that were keeping the whole thing afloat. But they only walked a few steps before the whole ship shook from the thunder once again, and lurched on its nose. The three all let out a cry as they were thrown off their feet, and Ash's blood went cold as the soup that had stained his clothes fearing that they would tumble off the supports. Luckily, they all managed to throw themselves onto the ground before any of them tumbled over the railing.
Lifting his head, Ash gave them a nervous smile. "I-I think we should try to get off this thing, cause you guys look really scared!"
"We can't get off," Brock told him. "We're a mile high!"
"You should really think before you open your mouth, Ashy-boy. We just need to find those two, where ever they are."
"That's our cue!" a female voice cut in. "Prepare for trouble!"
"Make it double!" The three males all turned to see the flight attendants, but they were dressed differently – and familiarly. Instead of the blue outfits, they wore white ones with the letter 'R' draped across the fronts. They hung off the ladder leaving to the upper level, and sneered down at them. Above them, a Meowth smirked down at them, hanging its head upside-down from the exit.
Before they could continue further with their motto, thunder boomed once again, making the whole blimp shiver and knocking off their balance, and they let out cries of fright before tumbling down onto the steel walkway. The three grimaced as the Team Rocket members made contact with the ground, but they quickly picked themselves up and crossed their arms. "To protect the world from devastation!"
"To unite all peoples within our nation."
"To denounce the evils of truth and love."
"To extend our reach to the stars above."
"Jessie!"
"James!"
"Team Rocket blast off at the speed of light."
"Surrender now, or prepare to fight."
"Meowth, that's right!"
"Team Rocket!" Ash stated, standing up and clutching one of his fists. He had encountered the gang of evildoers a few times in his journey through Kanto, and these ones in particular on more than one occasion.
"Woah, did that Meowth just talk?" Gary asked, blinking in shock as if he couldn't believe his own eyes.
"We should have known something wasn't right about this blimp ride," Brock spat. "Why don't you three go hit the road!"
"We're not going!" James said matter-of-factually, and planting one of his gloved hands on his hips.
"And you're not going anywhere, either," Jessie added.
"You're trapped 'dis time, and nobody's leaving 'dis balloon 'till we get what we want," Meowth said with a cocked brow. "Now, hand over all your Pokémon!" Right away, Jessie and James each produced a Poké Ball from their uniform and held it firmly in their hands.
"Oh, let's make this transaction..."
"...a bit more exciting," Jessie finished for her partner, and then they threw their Poké Balls forward. "Arbok!"
"Weezing, show time!" Jessie's Poké Ball burst open, and a large purple cobra-like Pokémon with sharp fangs emerged from the light, and gave a loud hiss. In front of it, a round, double-headed Pokémon with craters dotting its entire body appeared and floated through the air.
"Weezing!" it wheezed.
Without even waiting for them to bring out any opposing Pokémon, Jessie pointed forward and commanded her first attack. "All right, Arbok! Use your Bite attack!" The Poison-type Pokémon wound its long body through the metal frame of the blimp before baring its fangs and lunging at the three Trainers.
Ash reacted as fast as he could, and snatched a Poké Ball off his belt before tossing it forward. "Charmeleon, I choose you!" In a flash of light that briefly illuminated the dark space, a red lizard-like Pokémon with red scales and a fire burning on the end of its tail appeared.
"Chaaar!"
"Charmeleon, Flamethrower now!" Ash commanded. The Fire-type took in a deep breath before sending out an orange and yellow stream of fire from its mouth. The fire enveloped Arbok, and soon hissing from all over filled their ears. The airbags on the sides of the railings were threatening to pop!
"Ash, are you trying to get us killed?! You can't use flame attacks inside of the main frame of a blimp!" Gary screamed. "You're gonna make this whole thing explode!"
"That's a good point," Ash said nervously as a bead of sweat dripped down from underneath his hairline.
While the pair were arguing, Weezing took advantage of the distraction and honed in to attack them. Luckily, Brock was on top of it. "Go, Geodude!" he cried, throwing his own Poké Ball forward. His Pokémon too floated in the air, but the light from inside the Poké Ball came together to form a rock with strong-looking arms.
"Geee!" it grunted as it appeared, and both it and Weezing collided together in midair Tackle attacks. They bounced back and forth off each other a couple times before Geodude faked it out and instead of colliding with it, snatched it up in its hands. While Weezing struggled to get out of the Rock Pokémon's grip, Geodude spun around and used Seismic Toss to throw the Poison Pokémon into the air. It threw the Poison Gas Pokémon with such force that it wasn't able to catch itself, and passed through the envelope of the blimp, creating a hole. Seconds later, Weezing came floating back in, making the hole larger than before. A loud tearing sounded from all over, and they could feel wind blowing at them from all directions. The first tear was enough to make the other parts of the blimp start to fall apart as well.
Gary looked up at the various tears forming, and quickly faced forward. "That's enough of this!" he cried, and produced his own Poké Ball before throwing it forward. "I choose Nidoqueen!" Gary's ball burst open, and between Geodude and Charmeleon, a large blue Pokémon with horns lining its back appeared and gave a monstrous roar. "Nidoqueen, Hyper Beam attack!" Instantly, the Drill Pokémon opened its maw and orange energy began to form in front of its tongue. After only a moment of charging, it fired a powerful blast of orange energy out at Team Rocket. The pair and their Pokémon all screamed in horror before a huge explosion sounded, taking them away and sending them flying through the blimp's envelope.
"Looks like Team Rocket's blasting off agaaaaiiiiinnn!" they cried as they disappeared into the storm.
Blue lightning danced across the hole that Weezing originally made, which grabbed their attention. "Look! The storm's gonna tear the whole blimp apart!" Brock shouted. Gary rushed up to the ladder that the Team Rocket trio had made their appearance on and climbed up it halfway.
"I can see sunlight; we're almost out of the storm!" the auburn-haired Trainer observed, but he had to shout, as a loud hissing filled the dark area. "What's that?"
"The gas is starting to leak from those tanks!" Brock said, looking at the airbags that were releasing the air inside them. "We've got to try and land this thing fast."
"Right," Ash agreed. "What's our plan?"
"We've got to work fast," Brock muttered. "Let out your Pokémon."
"Why should we?" Gary questioned, stepping off the ladder, but Ash's face brightened.
"I get it! We're gonna use their weight to help steer the blimp!" Brock smiled at his friend, and held all of his Poké Balls in his arms before tossing them all up in the air. "Come on out!" His Geodude was already out of its Poké Ball, so Vulpix, Zubat, and Psyduck all appeared on the steel walkway. Behind them, Onix let out a roar as it emerged from inside its ball, but their stomachs all lurched once it did. The blimp was falling too fast. "Onix, you're too heavy! Return!" With extreme haste, Brock quickly pointed Onix's Poké Ball at it, and pulled it back inside. Right away, they stopped falling through the air.
Next it was Ash's turn. One by one, he threw out his Pokémon. "Blaassttt!"
"Bulba!"
"Bri-yah!"
"Pigeoo!"
Gary was the last to send out his Pokémon, but only opted to send out his Venusaur and Nidoking, and with Nidoqueen already out, that would make for a good amount of weight to try and balance as much as they could.
Then the plan unfolded. Ash's job was to direct the Pokémon in the main frame to run back and forth wherever they needed weight. Brock would go down to the control room and steer toward land, and Gary would be on communications to direct Ash and the Pokémon. After a few painstaking, anxiety-filled minutes, Gary's voice echoed through the blimp. "Okay, Ash! Move all the Pokémon to the front of the blimp!"
"Okay!" he responded, and looked at the group of Pokémon behind him. "Let's hurry up, guys!" All of them took off in a run with Ash in the lead, and the blimp groaned as it lurched forward and threatened to flip forward, and Brock's voice faded from distance, screamed through the speakers.
"Woah! Too much! Head back!"
"Okay! Follow me!" Ash cried, spinning on his heel and heading in the direction from where they all came from. Just like before, the blimp moaned in pain and leaned back, but this time the nose was almost facing the sun.
"Ash, no! That's too far!" Brock yelled.
"C'mon, guys!" All the Pokémon changed direction yet again and hurried to the front of the blimp, only to feel gravity pull them forward once again. As with most of their plans, it was complete and utter chaos. Ash and the Pokémon kept going back and forth across the walkway, and the blimp rocked through the air like a rocking chair, and all the while Brock and Gary kept screaming orders at him.
They had finally made it through the storm clouds, and sunlight poured in through the tatters in the blimp's outer casing, but that didn't mean the journey wasn't over yet: they still had to land and they were falling fast. Ash couldn't see the ground, but could only hope they wouldn't have to swim the rest of the way. "We see an island up ahead!" Gary stated over the intercom. "We're gonna try and land on it. Have everyone go to the front, and brace for impact!"
"You heard 'im, guys!" Ash called for the final time, waving his arm in a gesture to have the Pokémon follow him, and they all rushed toward the front of the blimp. And then, following Gary's warning, immediately gripped the cold, steel railings for support. The wind whipped through Ash's spikes and he clasped his eyes shut hard, and finally, the impact of them hitting the solid ground came. Everyone all let out a cry and Ash was thrown off his feet completely as the nose dug into the ground and the tail reached toward the sky and threatened to flip. As Pokémon piled all around him, Blastoise threw itself between the blimp's envelope and its Trainer to save him from being crushed. And as fast as it started, the blimp steadied itself.
A quiet intercom system was playing outside where they had landed, but the ringing in Ash's ears was too loud to be able to hear it. Instead, he groaned and adjusted his hat. "Hey guys, are you okay?" he asked. All the Pokémon gave an utter of response, and Ash let out a sigh of relief. "Blastoise, thanks."
"Blaaast!" his starter Pokémon answered, giving him a grin.
"Ash, are you all right?" Brock asked over the intercom system. "You're not gonna believe this, but we landed on Valencia Island!"
"No way!" Ash's eyebrows reached for his forehead. His response was rhetorical, of course, as Brock couldn't hear him, but what were the chances of them landing on the exact spot they needed to?
While Ash was indeed counting his lucky stars, he was hoping that his luck hadn't run out as of yet.
