A Fighter to the End
Chapter 2 - Cattle Drive
The start of day 3 of camp was less uneventful, as a heavy rain storm cancelled the plans that Roxie and Dave planned for the campers, so each kid did spend most of the time doing their own thing, till before tea time most if not all of them started to chat, Aithne did linker talking to the younger boys, Ben was less nervous when he saw her kinder side when they left Bumpy back at the Lab, Darius would talk about you guessed it dinosaurs, she wasn't going to spoil the lad's mood with something he clearly enjoys. Spending time with them reminded her of her younger brothers, she wondered how they are holding up back at home, wondering if they have driven Da crazy with their pranks, she did ask Roxie about contacting family to keep them posted, however Roxie informed her that the signal was shotty especially in cloudy weather and not just storms.
After politely excusing herself she made her way to the gym again, her hands felt raw after yesterday's workout, so she focused on weightlifting, after looking for the heaviness weight she could find before finding other equipment like a footballs, basketballs etc, apparently the camp was not just about dinosaurs… who knew?
Like before Aithne lost track of time, she needed to take it easy for tomorrow, hopefully now her mind will let her very get a proper rest, she leaves the gym and notices the others are outside, Darius, Ben, Kenji, Sammy, and Brooklynn are sat around the fire, suddenly questioning if the decking is fire proof enough so they don't fall to the ground. While as Yasmina was standing leaning over the railing, drawing in her sketch book, not wanting to interrupt either of them she stayed near the stairs, enjoying the night air. She over hears Daruis telling the group a scary story and it would have to be Dino themed.
"We thought that it would be fun, We thought we'd be safe but...we didn't realize the horror waiting for us on the island. Claws... Teeth... Screaming... So much screaming,"
"How much screaming?" Ben whimpered.
"Shhh! He's getting to the good part," Kenji said
"The T-Rex stalked closer. Her jaws opened wide and-"
A sudden flash light cut Daruis storytelling, knowing who did it, Aithne feels like she is going to develop a twitch by the end of this so-called trip.
"For the vlog," she says, nonchalant about the fact that she's running the moment. It's moments like these that I wish I had my machete. "Keep telling your little story."
"The T-Rex emer-".
"Shoot, ran out of space, hold on one sec, no, no, not that one, Everest was a good selfie." Brooklynn interrupts, killing the mood.
"Maybe I should start again," Darius sadly states.
"No, how about you just stop," Ben says still clinging onto Kenji's arm.
"Dude chill," Kenji responded. "He's not even telling the story right now and how is your grip this strong?"
"The T-Rex st-,"
"Shouldn't we call Yasmina over?" Sammy interrupted this time. "I bet she'd love this story."
Darius gave up and flopped onto his back on the bench.
Aithne notice that Yasmina hardly spends any time with anyone else, if anything she has spoken to her more than any of them, maybe because they both are in the athlete careers, but then again it's only been three days since they got on the island, don't know each to their own she guessed. Flash of lightning and thunder made them all jump, rain came pouring down, quickly extinguish the firepit, everyone hurries inside expect from Aithne who stayed where she was and Darius slowly walked inside, feeling sorry for the kid Aithne says.
"Hey Darius, every thought on writing sci-fi horror books? I think yours can be bestseller."
"Not really," Darius replied. "But with that in mind could be a plan b."
Aithne smiled as he heads inside, glad to cheer him up, she looked at the stormy sky, letting the rain cool her for a couple minutes before she became drench and heads inside, closing the door behind her.
"Can't hear you in my shell!"
She watches Yasmina walking away from the sitting area, where Sammy is. Aithne can understand where Sammy is coming from, she too has a big family on both sides of her parents, but she needs a little time to herself, hell she even has a little spot that she would go too when she needs to chilli especially after a tough day. Feeling very tired she decides to call it a night, she heads to the girls dorm room, getting out of her workout clothes, had a quick shower and changed into her nightwear, she heads to her bed, noticing Yasmina is in her bunk with her book.
"Did your book survive," she asked.
"Just about," Yasmina replied.
"If you want," she pulls out her notebook. "You can draw in this."
"But aren't you using it?" Yasmina questioned.
"Nah, it's only for doodling and writing a few haikus here and there, nothing important," she replies and throws it to Yasmina who catches it one handed with ease.
"Thanks."
The two sat in comfortable silence, they can hear the muffled banter from the sitting area, and the occasional flash of lightening quickly followed by thunder, it did set the mood to read, all that was missing was a roaring fire and a ticking from a Grandfather clock.
Just as she was dozing off, the thunder got louder making the two jump, Aithne hit her head on the top bunk
"Why," she groaned holding her head. "curse my family's tall genes."
"You going to beat up the top buck?" Yasmina commented with a small smile.
"If you find one less bunk you'll know why," she grumbled laying back down, turning on her side to face the window, she heard Yasmina giggle.
The storm passed the next morning, grey clouds where still larking with the sun shining in the gaps, Aithne knows enough about rain clouds to always be aware of the rain can be unpredictable, after the campers had breakfast they were taken to an open grassland, where several Gryospheres waiting for them.
"Saddle up dudes and dudettes," Dave announced "We're going on a cattle drive, but with dinosaurs! It's a Dino Drive!"
"No shit sherlock," Aithne muttered to herself.
Several of the teens got into the Gryospheres, Brooklynn was sat in one on her phone yet again, Aithne was not going in that one, Yasmina was on her own until Sammy joined her.
"Poor lass," Aithne thought, then something caught her attention, when she saw the rest of the campers get pared up.
"Hey Rox, not to spoil the mood, but we one hamster-ball short."
"Yes unfortunately the fourth Gryosphere was not in working order so," She points to a quadbike with a helmet on the seat. "You don't mend driving one of these."
"I'm not complaining," Aithne responded, Roxie headed her an earpiece to stay in contact with the group.
She takes a seat on the quadbike, getting the feel of it, nothing like hers back home, helping load for the sheep, pigs, goats and retired work horses on her Dad and Aunt's farms, or racing with her Brothers and cousins on a day off, rain or shine. This is more up her ally.
"All righty campers," she hears Dave's voice from the earpiece.
"The headsets are for emergencies, you can always reach us on channel 6," Roxie informed them, Aithne straps on her helmet.
"Let the herding begin!"
They all speed pass the Jeep, except for Ben and Kenji, they ride behind the herd at a comfortable speed, Aithne took her sight of the Dinosaurs and towards the others, Darius looking beyond happy, Brooklynn is still on her phone big shocker, looking over at her left, Sammy is chatting Yamina's ear off, while Track Star looks like she is questioning her life choices, but witnesses Yazmina nudging the Gyro harshly making Sammy to grab onto her seat so she would not fall, that shut her up. Aithne looked forward back at the herd when the sound of rumbling from the sky made her look up, the clouds had gotten darker, then lightning strikes followed by thunder. Aithne looked back at the herd when a Stego bellowed in shock then accidently hitting an Ankylosaurus with its tail. Not long after that Roxie pulls the Jeep in front of the campers stopping them from following the Dinosaurs.
"Hey gang, new plan," Dave says as he open the Jeep door. "Storm's getting worse, so we're all going back to camp, fun right?"
They complained about the news as they get out of the Gryos, apart from Aithne, she had a feel this would happen.
"Don't blame me, blame the storm" Dave responded.
"I blame them both," Aithne and Roxie sync.
"We're not gonna let a little rain stop us, are we?" Darius said. "When else will we get the chance to ride alongside a herd of dinosaurs?"
"Sorry can't risk it," Dave replied.
"But Dave," Darius speak again. "I'm sure under you and Roxie's capable leadership, we'll-"
"This is not up for discussion," Roxie cut him off.
While Roxie tries to contact over Park Staff, Aithne removes her helmet, looking back at the sky again, it was getting worse by the second.
"Okay new, new plan, storm's interfering with the radio, so Rox and I will drive ahead and tell the others we're pulling out, we'll be right back, stay together and stay behind the herd," Dave informs them. "And Aithne your in charge of the group till we get back."
"I'm what now?"
Roxie and Dave drive ahead, Aithne could not believe what she just heard, everyone gets back in the Gryos, lightning strikes again, scaring and Sinoceratops away from the herd, Aithne spots Darius talking to Brooklynn,
"Darius don't even-"
They speed off after the Dinosaur, Aithne groaned with frustration.
"Oh that little-"
"Wait!" Sammy over the headset, "Are you guys going after her?"
"The rest of you, stay here," Aithne says as she puts her helmet back on.
Aithne rived the engine and on following the youngest of the group, when she was on the left side of the Gryo say called out on the headset.
"Darius, Pinky you two need to get to the back of the herd now, leave the Dino to the workers, they should be doing this, like they are suppose too."
She made a sudden turn to avoid rocks, coming up behind her was another Gryo speeding pass her, seeing Yamina and Sammy, then Kenji and Ben.
"Relax Fisticuffs we got this," Kenji on the headset. "Just because Dave and Roxie put you in charge-"
"I did not sign up for this!" Aithne cut Kenji of mid-sentence. "And I swear if this is because you are trying to get a video Pinky I'm going to throw that Phone back into that Raptor Paddock!"
"Um, let's just everyone settle down a bit, Sammy. We don't wanna get too close or- AHH!"
Aithne had to break so she would not hit the girls when the boys cut across them.
"Watch it Ben," Yasmina exclaimed. "You almost hit us!"
"It wasn't me," Ben protested.
"I definitely didn't sign up for this," Aithne muttered to herself, speeding pass Yasmina and Sammy. "Everyone pull back now! Just leave it!"
"It's a she Aithne," Sammy gently says."
"I don't care!" she replied back, her patience is hanging by a thread, she passed Kenji and Ben who are fighting over the driving stick.
"Someone flank her on the other side, and we can lead her back to the herd," Darius instructed.
"Wait you'll scare her AH!"
Kenji pulled in front of the girls again.
"Let the big dogs handle this, cowgirl," said Kenji, he drove to the other side of the Dinosaur. "Sino sandwich baby! Hoo!
Aithne was close behind them, keeping her distance away from the tail.
"I'll cut her off," Darius. "It'll be fine, Sammy."
She had enough of this.
"NO EVERYONE PULL BACK NOW!"
The dinosaur charge course after Darius stopped in front of it, Aithne had to break hard, she nearly fell forwards if she didn't had a death grip on the handle bars, the Sino passed her.
"Listen up, y'all," Sammy says. "We gotta get her before she goes and spooks the whole herd. Stay to the outside or-."
"We got this," Kenji cut her off, driving pass her as well as Darius.
"Relax, Darius knows dinosaurs, " Yasmina says following after them.
"Am I just talking to myself here?!" she exclaimed, putting the bike into high gear pursuing them.
Aithne watched as Daruis pulls the Gyro in front of the Sino again, not liking it in the slightest it headbutts the Gyro making them hit into the herd like a giant ping pong machine, the dinosaurs start to panic too, they ran in many directions, split up the campers, Aithne drives though the herd just missing dinosaurs and avoiding everything from horn to tail, she drives by a Brachiosaurus just missing getting stomped on. Signing in relief she didn't become a pancake, she sees the jungle up ahead, looking other her shoulder, spotting the campers not far behind her and the rest of the Herd right on their tail.
"Head for cover in the jungle," Aithne orders the others. "GO! GO!"
Finally listen to her, they enter the jungle losing the Dinosaurs, thunder and lightning appear again, Aithne had to close her eyes from the sudden flash of light, she looks around her, no sign of the group. Out of nowhere and Stego runs pass her, not enough time to brake the Stego's tail hits the front of the bike, knocking her off she flies forward, the moment she lands on the ground she rolls to prevent any major damage to herself, staying low in case anymore dinosaurs make a sudden appearances. Panting she slowly sits up checking her surroundings, knowing it was clear for now she stands up, testing her arms, hands, legs, knees, feet, and basically checking nothing is broken, feeling a bruise starting to form on her left shoulder and soreness on her neck but she seems fine.
Removing her helmet she walks to her bike checking the damage the Stego caused, thankfully she has an interest in bikes ever since she was young, spending time with her grandfather and his old bikes and learning how to fix them.
"Tire looks fine," she says to herself. "Stirring is shot, break fuel is slightly leaking but it'll have to do till then, still could be worse."
"HELP! CAN YOU HEAR US?" Brooklynn screamed in the earpiece. "WE'RE STUCK….MUDHOLE… AND WE'RE SINKING! HELP!"
"Shite," Aithne cursed.
Thinking fast she rips her checkered sleeve tying it around the leak to slow it down, forgetting the helmet, she starts the engine, it took two tries to get it going and rolls out into the jungle, praying the bike holds out.
"Hello? Hello? Can anybody hear me?" Yasmina calls out on the headset.
"Loud and clear Yasmina!" she responded.
"Aithne where are you?" Yasmina replied.
Aithne sees the Gryo and drives towards it.
"On your right," she pulls up towards them. "You two hear Pinky too?
"Yes," Sammy answered. "And still no sign of- Ben and Kenji?"
They stop in front of the boys, Aithne get off the bike, get to Gyro to open.
"In. now," she ordered.
Ben hurries in on Yasmina's side, when Kenji walked by to get to Sammy's seat, she smacks him at the back of the head.
"OW! What was that for?!"
"For telling me to chill, no get in and shut up," Aithne shuts the door and heads back to the bike.
"Man she is scary when she is angry," Kenji whispered to the others on the headset.
"I heard that ya eejit!" she exclaimed glaring back at Kenji.
Aithne drives in front of the Gryo, not even five minutes in she can feel the bike getting slower, looking down the sleeve she tore off is soaked, but she kept on going.
"I lost them," said Sammy. It's just static."
Aithne heard something but due to the bike and headpiece static, she slows down.
"Mina stop Gryo," Aithne tells her.
They stop, Aithne removes the earpiece, then she heard it.
"Help!"
"Somebody please!"
"Over there!" Aithne says pointing to her right, putting back the earpiece back in she leads the others towards the pleas.
"Darius? Brooklynn?" Aithne says into the headset.
"Hello? Aithne?" Darius called out,
"Do you read us?" Sammy replied. "We're coming to help!
The bike's engine started to pop and bang, she still kept the bike going, it head to, seeing an open area in front of them, she sees the mud pits and the Gryo hold Darius and Brooklynn inside, not even turning of the engine Aithne jumps off the bike and hurries over to them, jumping into the mud, trying to grab on to it from the bottom.
"Hang on!" Aithne says keep the youngest teens.
"Roxie! Dave! We're got a real emergency here!" Ben calls on the headset.
Yasmina and Kenji jump in the mud too, aiding Aithne, she tries to lower herself to get a better grip, but the mud was in the way.
"I can't grab a hold of it," Yasmina says, struggling too.
"Come on!" Aithne grunted; she was not giving up.
"It's too heavy," said Kenji.
"It gonna pull you under!" Ben tells them.
The three on them pulled back, Aithne is the last to pull back, she kept her eyes on Darius and Brooklynn, worry etched on their faces.
"Um guys," ben whimpered.
Aithne turns around, the Sino they had been chasing had to so itself, it bellows out.
"I've got an idea," Sammy says, walking towards the dinosaur.
"What are you doing?" Yaz asked, Sammy didn't respond, and grabs a fallen branch nearby.
She slowly approaches the Sino, it backway a few steps before roaring at the Texan, she shrinks back out of fright but still moves towards it.
"Sam back away from it," Aithne tells her, but she doesn't.
"Hey, I get it," she says to it, it still steps back bellowing. "It's hard to trust strangers, it's a scary world out there, but… I'll trust you if you trust me, I'm not gonna hurt you."
She reached out to place a hand on the Sino's face, it calms down, and takes the branch.
"Whoa," Yasmina says.
"You can say that again," Aithne answers.
"Guys?" Daruis called out.
"Real touching and all, but we're still gonna die!" Brooklynn shrieked.
"Hurry!" Sammy ordered.
Sammy makes a rope out of vines Aithne get the idea and helps, once done Ben grabs the rope and throws it up to Kenji who climbed into the tree close to the mud hole, then he passes it to Yasmina, she grabs it, hurries other to the mudhole drops the rope over with is remaining of the Gryo, Brooklynn grabs the rope from the hole, with baited breathe they see Daruis give them the thumbs up before the Gyro is gone, Aithne grabs onto the makeshift rope with both hand wrapping it around her arm and starts to pull, she strains herself but refuses to let go. Sammy ties the other veins to the Sino.
"Hurry Sammy!" Ben shrieked.
"On it!" Sammy respond, after binding the last of the vine rope on the Sino.
Aithne can feel to vine being slow pulled back, releasing the strain in her arms, when the rope began to higher she lets go, hunching over her knees, her muscles screamed, the Gyro is out of the mud, grabbing a fallen branch she and Yasmina move it to solid ground, she kept it still while Yasmina opens it up, they both look inside.
"Hey," Darius greeted.
They are okay.
Both a Aithne and Yasmina fall to the ground, Aithne is flat on her back, not even caring if she laying in mud, the two high five each other laughing, the others hurried over cheering at the rescue plan worked.
"Cowgirl for the win!" Kenji says, high fiving Sammy.
Aithne lifts her head up at the sound of an vehicle, Dave and Roxie finally show up.
"Hey look! It's Dave and Roxie! Hey!" Sammy calls out to them.
"Now they show up," Aithne complained dropping her head down.
They head to back to camp, and Roxie is not happy at all.
"You could have been killed! What were you thinking?"
Aithne was standing at the back of the group not wanting to hear what Roxie had to say, and she had a feeling she was going to be blamed. They get into the lift.
"Now stay in your bunks, you hear me?"
"Ok then," Aithen side jumped out of the lift before it closed, she faces Roxie crossed her arms in front of her chest. "Now you hear me."
"Aithne?! This-"
"NO, you listen, I did not sign up to be camps babysitter, what was you expecting to happen?! You need to get more staff if you cannot handle 6 teenagers. I didn't travel all the here to do volunteer work, get your shit together."
With that said she turns to the lift and steps inside, closing the door to a shocked Roxie. On the way up, Aithne signed deeply holding the bridge of her nose, she knew should not have lost her temper with Roxie, the woman is doing her job, but really with only two adults watching over them it just spells disaster, seeing how three have sneaked away after curfew while nearly getting killed, one who got them kicked out of a lab and with today that was the cherry on top. When she made it to the top she made a beeline to the showers to get rid of the mud that was still on her.
While changed into her PJ's and drying her hair with a towel, she see Yasmina and Sammy on the balcony, Sammy was hugging her, Aithne headed to the girls dorms and lay on her bed, pick up her book and read.
"Hey," a voice snapped her out of her chapter, looking up at who spoke.
"Pinky," Aithne responded. "To what do own the pleasure." She turned her attention back to her book.
"I- I am sorry," she says.
Aithne turned her head back at the girl so fast she thought she gave herself whiplash.
"Come again?"
"I'm sorry, Daruis only went after the Sino because he wanted to help me with my video, after I was complaining about losing more followers, I nearly… got us both killed today."
Aithne was stunned, it took her a couple of seconds to responded to that, she noticed the tension in Brooklynn body, Aithne sits up cross her legs, and pats the bed so Brooklynn can sit down, Brooklynn does so, taken back at the action from Fisticuffs but she does sit down.
"Look," Aithne began. "We before come from two very different ways of life, but we started our careers very, very early, you took it to the internet and I took mine into the fighting rings, we have our own reasons for doing so…. And we have sacrifice most of our childhood to get where we both are now, but if you cannot take disliked feedback from people who don't know the real you, then who are you really doing it for?"
Brooklynn looked up at the older girl, taken back at her words, she thought of it for a moment before answering.
"What do you mean by both 'sacrifice childhood'," Brooklynn asked.
"That is for another time," Aithne gently warned, she was not going take that much of step of bonding yet. "But do you understand what I'm saying Pinky?"
"Yeah I hear you, but can you stop calling that,"
"I'll think about it Brook," Aithne replied.
Brooklynn huffed with small smile, and on that note she gets up from the bed an walks out of the dorm, Yasmina passes by her heading to her bunk.
"What did Brooklynn want?" Yasmina asked.
"She apologised for today," she replied, Yasmina raised a eyebrow in shock. "Yeah that was the look I had not long ago, speaking off, Sam doesn't know when to quit does she?"
"Nope."
Well that's the second chapter, I can say that this is one of my weak chapters in this Fanfic, more of a filler in my opinion, any way the next chapter is when shit really happens. However with the winter holidays not far away, I'm going to be super busy, but I will try to post at least the odd one or two chapters before the end of the year, it will depend on the when.
