"Oh, absolutely not!" Abby shouted at her husband as he came back from the fridge with a water bottle.
Abby Harnisch shook her head at the stupid little paper in front of her
You're invited….
To O'Grady high's 10 year reunion! RSVP to Phillip Bertrand Demorio
Oh, Philip
Abby thought sarcastically as she read his contact information below.
Why was Kevin even asking?!? Especially in their situation…
"Abbyyyyyyyyy," Kevin whines in an overly dramatic tone that triggers an eye roll in the woman in front of him. He pretends to fall softly on her shoulder, so she takes the pillow in the corner of the couch and teasingly hits his head with it.
"Like that'll help, throwing a hissy like a child." She remarks as she can't hold her slight laughter back.
"Come on princess, can you hear me out?"
"Cut the sweet talk, Kev."
"This our high school reunion!!! Ya know, the place we met and fell in love?!?" He left bunch of wet kisses all over her face as she giggled begrudgingly.
"First of all, you know I can't," Abby gently pushes him off and motions to her tummy,
"I'll officially be 38 weeks by then, no traveling!"
"We don't have to fly, I'll drive us! It's just nine hours away and if you go into labor I'll call an ambulance! Plus we'll already be packed." He winks at that, just as he did with his many elaborate plans in high school.
"We can stay with my brother too-"
"He lives in your parent's basement-"
"Not Kai, Mark just moved back!"
"Or we could save money and just follow the rules like the doctor said by staying home!"
"Ugh, still a rule follower." Kevin shook his head and looked to the sky,
"Did our skip day teach you nothing?"
"By 'skip day' you mean when everyone turned ancient and our high school started to look like a retirement home?"
"That was kinda funny looking back!"
"Oh, don't forget when the two of us got lost in the woods with all the dirt, mud, animals- did I mention the part my hair caught on fire?"
"I salvaged your precious hair, and I enjoyed being alone with you!" Kevin smiled as he recalled the day, all while twirling a soft strand; it was one of the climatic moments between he and Abby before they got together.
"Okay, you got me there. It was a sweet moment, but still, two teens alone in the woods wasn't ideal!"
"We're here now, aren't we?"
This what I get for marrying the most nonchalant guy on Earth
"Look, you seriously wanna go back to the town that was plagued by supernatural events that got in our way everyday and see assholes we gladly left behind?" Abby cringes at even the thought of seeing some of her former peers.
"Okay first of all, the weirdness wasn't that bad, it made life exciting-"
"EXCITING?!? By exciting do you mean problematic, anxiety inducing, and-"
"We always figured it out!" Kevin defends as Abby pushes the invite back on the table.
"That was when we were risky teens, as a pregnant woman I don't wanna take anymore risks-"
Kevin kneels below and puts his ear to Abby's belly as his palm starts to rub the surface.
"What's that, baby? You wanna go to the reunion and see where mommy and daddy fell in love? Kick two times for yes."
No kicks.
He was being adorable, but Abby wasn't falling for it.
"Well Kev, there's your-"
There it was. A quick little movement in her abdomen, making the couple wince in happiness.
"Answer? Yep-"
"You said two kicks-"
"I got one!"
"So?"
"Not a no!"
"Not a yes, either!"
Abby tilts her head down, naturally putting her hand where Kevin's is.
"I don't even get the point of reunions anymore. Now you can see what everyone's up to on social media."
"Not if you don't follow everyone!" He gets up, pushing his long hair back and holding her shoulders,
"Don't you wanna show that bitch Brooke how successful you are now?!? Won't you get a kick out of seeing her face when she realizes you totally beat her in life?"
The former head cheerleader stayed in O'Grady. She was divorced three times at 28 and involved in her own "online business" (pyramid schemes). She was a cheerleading coach at summer camp but allegedly got fired due to fucking a dad during drop off behind bleachers. Kevin got this information from his brother whose girlfriend works at the camp and best believe he took delight in sharing the updates with his wife.
Meanwhile, Abby settled in Los Angeles. She was a fashion editor for Vogue, married five years to her high school sweetheart, expecting her first child, and highly respected in her field. While she dreamed of the first half of this picture but could never phantom the latter, she wouldn't trade it for the world. Her career felt like fun opposed to a job, the city was much more exciting and glamorous opposed to a small town, and Kevin treated her like "princess" he always referred to her as- in the sense he supported, cared for, and loved her, opposed to consistently calling her stuck up or bratty.
"You think she'll show her face there?!?"
"Please, at this rate high school is all she has left in terms of success. Plus I wanna show Pete Klesko that I ended up with the hottest babe in school and that he missed out."
"Oh, I forgot about him!" Sixteen year old Abby would cringe that the scene; married to Kevin and pregnant with his child, barely even remembering the Pete Klesko?
"Yea, being married to a fox like myself fades any memory of stupid jocks from high school-"
"Aren't you humble-"
"I don't even know what he's up to!"
"Well, I bet he isn't a corporate entrepreneur."
Kevin abandoned the rock star dream freshman year of college when he realized he wasn't quite ready to give up scheming and planning. He realized those skills can be a legitimate career, except much more convenient. He was by the far the most successful of his brothers, striking envy and approval in all of them.
"Yea, but he probably still has those killer biceps."
"Like you said- they're clearly not that killer if I haven't thought of them in years."
Abby leans in to kiss her husband; years later she still gets a slight tingle in her heart that feels like sweet water that can cause more addiction than any alcohol or drug.
"I married the right guy."
Kevin smiles at her, switching his gaze from her left eye, to her right, to her lips- then to her entire masterpiece of a face. He loved Abby, he always did; but figured she'd never love him back. That is, until the eventful night she got back from France…..
"You and me both, princess."
"I'm not a guy!"
"Oh, you know what I mean!"
They laugh, but Kevin sighs and looks to the floor.
"I'm not trying to annoy you about this, but other thing is…"
"What?"
"I haven't seen Harold in forever. And I know you call her when you can, but you haven't seen Beth in a while either….."
Abby frowned at that. It was true;
Harold was in New York and had his own talk show. He wasn't married but had several girlfriends through out the years, he just hadn't found the one yet. Women threw themselves at him anyways. He enjoyed the limelight and also contributed to various charities. His busy schedule limited time with friends that weren't in the city- Kevin and Abby watched his show every week, but his face on the screen didn't fill the Harold shaped hole in their hearts.
Beth was in Arizona and worked as a Climate Policy Analyst. While she wasn't married, she was in a two year relationship with a veterinarian that Abby and Kevin had yet to meet. Living quite closer, Abby had taken two trips to see her (Kevin couldn't attend either) but those were years back. She came to see Abby and Kevin a year ago but it was just a weekend trip. She was still extremely busy so contact was slim.
As for the group as a whole, there were holiday texts, happy birthday wishes, and the mention of plans but never the actual time for them. Daily texts turned to every other day, every other day turned to once a week, we turned to once a month, which…
"I miss them. So much." Abby sighed, realizing the last time they were all together was the wedding. No, the premier of Harold's show. Still a long time ago..
"That was the worst part of high school ending; we were never quite the same as a group….."
"I know. Happy for them, and they feel the same for us, but…."
"If they're going, we can too."
Kevin's head shot up.
"What?"
"If Beth or Harold plan on attending, we can go. I'm still worried about the weirdness and chance of premature labor, but you're right- we'll be prepared, and honestly we survived years there, what's a little reunion?"
"Are you sure?"
"I'm positive."
Kevin hugged her and kissed her neck.
"Thank you princess, if they're not there we don't have to. Deal?"
"Deal."
"And hey," he pulls back,
"I don't care how strong it is. The weirdness won't mess things up, I've got you."
"I believe it."
The two snuggled on the couch and fell asleep for about an hour, and after two phone calls the next morning Abby let Kevin know to call his brother for a place to stay and prepare his bragging skills.
